Gadolinium zirconate (Gd2Zr2O7, GZO) as an advanced thermal barrier coating (TBC) material, has lower thermal conductivity, better phase stability, sintering resistance, and calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) attack resistance than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, 6-8 wt%) at temperatures above 1200°C. However, the drawbacks of GZO, such as the low fracture toughness and the formation of deleterious interphases with thermally grown alumina have to be considered for the application as TBC. Using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and suspension plasma spraying (SPS), double-layered YSZ/GZO TBCs, and triple-layered YSZ/GZO TBCs were manufactured. In thermal cycling tests, both multilayered TBCs showed a significant longer lifetime than conventional single-layered APS YSZ TBCs. The failure mechanism of TBCs in thermal cycling test was investigated. In addition, the CMAS attack resistance of both TBCs was also investigated in a modified burner rig facility. The triple-layered TBCs had an extremely long lifetime under CMAS attack. The failure mechanism of TBCs under CMAS attack and the CMAS infiltration mechanism were investigated and discussed.  相似文献

Three different kinds of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) — 8YSZ, 38YSZ and a dual-layered (DL) TBCs with pure Y2O3 on the top of 8YSZ were produced on nickel-based superalloy substrate by air plasma spraying (APS). The Calcium–Magnesium–Aluminum-Silicate (CMAS) corrosion resistance of these three kinds of coatings were researched via burner rig test at 1350 °C for different durations. The microstructures and phase compositions of the coatings were characterized by SEM, EDS and XRD. With the increase of Y content, TBCs exhibit better performance against CMAS corrosion. The corrosion resistance against CMAS of different TBCs in descending was 8YSZ + Y2O3, 38YSZ and 8YSZ, respectively. YSZ diffused from TBCs into the CMAS, and formed Y-lean ZrO2 in TBCs because of the higher diffusion rate and solubility of Y3+ in CMAS than Zr4+. At the same time, 38YSZ/8YSZ + Y2O3 reacts with CAMS to form Ca4Y6(SiO4)6O/Y4·67(SiO4)3O with dense structure, which can prevent further infiltration of CMAS. The failure of 8YSZ coatings occurred at the interface between the ceramic coating and the thermally grown oxide scale (TGO)/bond coating. During the burner rig test, the Y2O3 layer of the DL TBCs peeled off progressively and the 8YSZ layer exposed gradually. DL coatings keep roughly intact and did not meet the failure criteria after 3 h test. 38YSZ coating was partially ablated, the overall thickness of the coating is thinned simultaneously after 2 h. Therefore, 8YSZ + Y2O3 dual-layered coating is expected to be a CMAS corrosion-resistant TBC with practical properties.  相似文献

Electron beam-physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) thermal barrier coating system (TBCs) are vulnerable to the degradations induced by the penetration of calcium- magnesium-alumino-silicate (CMAS). In this work, we conduct a numerical study to investigate the effect of CMAS penetration on the development of transient thermal stress in EB-PVD TBCs with the columnar microstructure. A two-dimensional periodical model is developed, taking into account the columnar microstructure of EB-PVD TBCs and the CMAS penetration. We found that the CMAS penetration would induce a field of high in-plane tensile stress in TC upon the rapid cooling, promoting the initiation of the vertical cracks from top surface toward to the bottom of TC. Meanwhile, the accumulation of out-of-plane tensile stress tends to occur at the side edges of EB-PVD columns near three main regions: closely beneath the top surface of TC, at the interface between CMAS penetrated and non-penetrated zone, and close to the TC/BC interface. Therefore, the horizontal cracks are likely to initiate from the side edges of EB-PVD columns at these three regions, which agrees well with experiments.  相似文献

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used as insulating layers to protect the underlying metallic structure of gas turbine blades. However, the thermal cycling performance of TBCs is affected by their complex working environments, which may shorten their service life. Previous studies have shown that preparing a mesh structure in the bonding layer can relieve thermal stress and improve the bonding strength, thereby prolonging the service life of TBCs. In this paper, a micromesh structure was prepared on the surface of the bonding layer via wet etching. The microstructure and failure mechanism of the micromesh TBCs after CMAS (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) thermal erosion were investigated. Numerical simulation was combined with thermal shock experiments to study the stress distribution of the micromesh-structured TBCs. The results showed that the circular convex structure can effectively improve the CMAS corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance of TBCs.  相似文献

Numerical simulations of the cracking behavior of the top layers of multilayer thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) can effectively reveal the failure mechanisms of the TBCs. Current finite element method (FEM)-based simulation means have been applied to solve certain simple cracking problems in TBCs; however, they cannot effectively describe complex cracking problems in TBCs such as coalescence, intersection, and interference among multiple cracks. Peridynamic (PD), a newly developed mechanical theory, has been widely studied to provide analysis for cracking problems in TBCs. In this paper, a numerical model of TBCs is built by the bond-based PD (BB-PD) theory. Complex cracking behaviors, such as spontaneous crack propagation at both interfacial and internal regions, coalescence, and interference among multiple cracks, are simulated under isothermal cooling and gradient cooling conditions. In addition, the effects of interfacial roughness and calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS) inclusions on the cracking behavior are discussed. The results show that the PD model accurately captures complex cracking behaviors observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Given the ability of the model for analyzing discontinuities in TBCs, it can help to further clarify the fracture mechanisms of TBCs.  相似文献

The stress caused by calcium–magnesium–alumino–silicate (CMAS) corrosion is a critical factor in thermal barrier failure of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). For the service safety of TBCs, it is important to characterize the stress inside TBCs during CMAS corrosion using a nondestructive and accurate method. In this study, photoluminescence spectroscopy technology was applied to characterize the stress in TBCs during CMAS corrosion. First, TBC specimens containing yttrium–aluminum–garnet doped with trace Ce3+ ions (YAG:Ce3+)/yttrium oxide partially stabilized zirconia double-ceramic-layer were prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying. Then, CMAS corrosion experiments were performed using the TBC specimens, and a mechanical model was derived based on Ce3+ photoluminescence spectroscopy to investigate the stress in the TBCs. Finally, the microstructure, extent of CMAS corrosion and stress field in TBC specimens, was characterized. The results reveal that the penetration of CMAS leads to local stress concentration and a nonlinear stress distribution from the outside surface to the inside of the YAG:Ce3+ layer. In addition, an increase in corrosion time, temperature, and CMAS concentration can significantly influence the evolution of the stress field in TBCs.  相似文献

In order to explore the difference of CMAS corrosion resistance in high temperature and rainwater environment of single-layer and double-layer thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), and further reveal the mechanism of CMAS corrosion resistance in above environment of double-layer TBCs modified by rare earth, two TBCs were prepared by air plasma spraying, whose ceramic coating were single-layer ZrO2–Y2O3 (YSZ) and double-layer La2Zr2O7(LZ)/YSZ, respectively. Subsequently, CMAS corrosion resistance tests at 1200 °C and rainwater environment of two TBCs were carried out. Results demonstrate that after high temperature CMAS corrosion for the same time, due to phase transformation, the volume of YSZ ceramic coating in single-layer TBCs shrank and surface cracks formed, which would lead to coating failure. When LZ ceramic coating of double-layer TBCs reacted with CMAS, compact apatite phases and fluorite phases formed, the penetration of CMAS into ceramic coating was inhibited effectively. Raman analysis and calculation results show that both of the surface residual stress of ceramic coating in two TBCs were compressive stress, and the residual stress of ceramic coating in double-layer TBCs were smaller than that of single-layer TBCs. Atomic force microscopy of TBCs after CMAS corrosion show that surface of double-layer TBCs was more uniform and compact than that of single-layer TBCs. The electrochemical properties in simulated rainwater of two TBCs after high temperature CMAS corrosion showed that double-layer TBCs possessed higher free corrosion potential, lower corrosion current and higher polarization resistance than those of single-layer TBCs. Consequently, the presence of LZ ceramic coating effectively improved CMAS corrosion resistance in high temperature and rainwater environment of double-layer TBCs.  相似文献

The corrosion resistance to calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) is critically important for the thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). High-entropy zirconate (La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2Gd0.2)2Zr2O7 (HEZ) ceramics with low thermal conductivity, high coefficient of thermal expansion and good durability to thermal shock is expected to be a good candidate for the next-generation TBCs. In this work, the CMAS corrosion of HEZ at 1300°C was firstly investigated and compared with the well-studied La2Zr2O7 (LZ). It is found that the HEZ ceramics showed a graceful behavior to CMAS corrosion, obviously much better than the LZ ceramics. The HEZ suffered from CMAS corrosion only through dissolution and re-precipitation, while additional grain boundary corrosion existed in the LZ system. The precipitated high-entropy apatite showed fine-grained structure, resulting in a reaction layer without cracks. This study reveals that HEZ is a promising candidate for TBCs with extreme resistance to CMAS corrosion.  相似文献

Ingestion of siliceous particulate debris into both propulsion and energy turbines has introduced significant challenges in harnessing the benefits of enhanced operation efficiencies through the use of higher temperatures and thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). The so-called CMAS (for calcium-magnesium alumino-silicate) particles can melt in the gas path at temperatures greater than 1200C, where they will subsequently impact the coating surface and infiltrate through the carefully engineered porosity or cracks in a TBC. Ultimately, this CMAS attack causes premature spallation through its solidification and stiffening the ceramic during cooling. It has been noted in recent years, that TBCs based on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) are completely non-resistant to CMAS attack due to their lack of reactivity with infiltrant liquid. New TBC ceramics such as Gadolinium Zirconate (GZO) show promise of CMAS resistance through rapid reaction-induced crystallization and solidification of the infiltrant, leading to its arrested infiltration. In both situations, the microstructure (porosity, micro and macro cracks) can be important differentiators in terms of the infiltration and subsequent failure mechanisms. This paper seeks to examine the interplay among microstructure, material, and CMAS attack in different scenarios. To do so, different types of YSZ & GZO single and multilayer coatings were fabricated using Air Plasma Spray (APS) and exposed to CMAS through isothermal and gradient mechanisms. In each of the cases, beyond their unique interactions with CMAS, it was observed the inherent microstructure and character of the porosity of the coating will have an additional role on the movement of the melt. For instance, vertical cracks can provide pathways for accelerated capillaric flow of the melt into both YSZ and GZO coatings. Based on these observations multilayer coatings have been proposed and realized toward potentially reducing complete coating failure and supporting multiple CMAS attack scenarios.  相似文献

The penetration of calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicate (CMAS) is one of the most vital factors inducing the failure of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings (APS TBCs). In present study, a two-dimensional periodical model considering the microstructures in ceramic top coat (TC) is built to study the cracking behavior in the TC of APS TBCs penetrated by CMAS during the cooling process. The CMAS penetration process is considered by filling the microstructures with the same shape of CMAS. The results show that CMAS penetration into the microstructures of the TC changed the stress distribution around the microstructures and induced a mixed crack type here. A microstructure with a relatively sharper geometry will experience a more severe stress state when penetrated by CMAS. The material discontinuity due to CMAS penetration also causes a slightly higher stress level around the microstructure at the CMAS deposit/TC interface, the CMAS penetrated layer and TC/BC interface. Thus, the horizontal cracks are easier to initiate from the microstructures with sharper geometry in these three regions.  相似文献

The impact of the penetration of small quantities of calcium-magnesium-alumino- silicates (CMAS) glassy melt in the porous plasma-sprayed (PS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is often neglected even though it might play a non-negligible role on the sintering and hence on the thermal insulation potential of TBCs. In this study, the sintering potential of small CMAS deposits (from 0.25–3 mg.cm−2) on freestanding yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) PS TBCs annealed at 1250 °C for 1 h was investigated. The results showed a gradual in-depth sintering with increasing CMAS deposits. This sintering was concomitant with local transformations of the tetragonal YSZ and resulted in an increase in the thermal diffusivity of the coatings that reached a maximum of ∼110 % for the fully penetrated coating.

Atmospheric plasma-sprayed (APS) coatings have a layered structure as well as lower strain tolerance and a shorter lifetime than EB-PVD coatings. In this study, TBCs composed of a LaMgAl11O19 (LMA) top coat and a NiCrAlY bond coat were prepared by APS coupled with dry-ice blasting to implant vertical microcracks in the top coat. The thermal cycling lifetime and CMAS corrosion behaviour of LMA-TBCs with pre-implanted vertical microcracks were investigated in detail. The results show that the LMA top coat possesses an improved proportion of vertical microcracks and that the corresponding TBC has an improved thermal cycling lifetime. The vertical microcracks in the top coats, which not only reduce the thermal stress but also improve the strain tolerance of TBCs, dramatically contribute to the improvement in the thermal cycling lifetime. Surprisingly, the CMAS corrosion resistance of LMA-type TBCs with implanted vertical microcracks is better than that of conventional TBCs with a typical layered structure.  相似文献

The microstructure of the ceramic topcoat has a great influence on the service performance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, conventional layered-structure TBCs, nanostructured TBCs, and novel-structured TBCs with a unique microstructure were fabricated by air plasma spraying. The relationship between the microstructure and properties of the three different TBCs was analysed. Their thermal insulation ability, sintering resistance, and durability were systematically evaluated. Additionally, their failure modes after being subjected to two kinds of thermal shock tests were analysed. The results revealed that the novel-structured TBCs had remarkably superior performances in all the examined aspects. The thermal conductivity of the novel-structured TBCs was significantly lower than those of the conventional and nanostructured TBCs both in the as-sprayed state and after thermal treatment for 500 h at 1100 °C. The macroscopic elastic modulus of the novel-structured TBCs after sintering at 1300 °C for 100 h was similar to those of the conventional and nanostructured TBCs in the as-sprayed state. During both a burner rig thermal shock test and a furnace cyclic oxidation test, the thermal shock lifetime of the novel-structured TBCs was much longer than those of the conventional and nanostructured TBCs. This study has demonstrated novel-structured plasma-sprayed TBCs with high thermal insulation ability and high durability.  相似文献

Calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS) corrosion significantly affects the durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, Y2O3 partially stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) TBCs are produced by electron beam-physical vapor deposition, followed by deposition of a Pt layer on the coating surfaces to improve the CMAS resistance. After exposure to 1250 °C for 2 h, the YSZ TBCs were severely attacked by molten CMAS, whereas the Pt-covered coatings exhibited improved CMAS resistance. However, the Pt layers seemed to be easily destroyed by the molten CMAS. With increased heat duration, the Pt layers became thinner. After CMAS attack at 1250 °C for 8 h, only a small amount of Pt remained on the coating surfaces, leading to accelerated degradation of the coatings. To fully exploit the protectiveness of the Pt layers against CMAS attack, it is necessary to improve the thermal compatibility between the Pt layers and molten CMAS.  相似文献

Because gas turbine engines must operate under increasingly harsh conditions, the degradation of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) by calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) is becoming an urgent issue. Mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) is considered a potential material for CMAS resistance; however, the performance of mullite in the presence of CMAS is still unclear. In this study, mullite and Al2O3–SiO2 were premixed with yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in different proportions, respectively. Porous ceramic pellets were used to conduct CMAS hot corrosion tests, and the penetration of molten CMAS and its mechanism were investigated. The thermal and mechanical properties of the samples were also characterized. It was found that the introduction of mullite and Al2O3–SiO2 mitigated the penetration of molten CMAS into the pellets owing to the formation of anorthite, especially at 45 wt% mullite/55 wt% YSZ. Compared with Al2O3–SiO2, mullite possesses a higher chemical activity and undergoes a faster reaction with CMAS, thus forming a sealing layer in a short time. Additionally, the thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, and fracture toughness of different samples were considered to guide the architectural design. Considering the CMAS corrosion resistance, thermal and mechanical performance of TBCs systematically, a TBC system with a multilayer architecture is proposed to provide a theoretical and practical basis for the design and optimization of the TBC microstructure.  相似文献

Air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely used in gas turbines to provide thermal insulation for the metallic engine components. During service, the multi-layered and multi-material systems undergo thermal and mechanical degradation. The degradation mechanisms include sintering, phase transformation, residual stress, oxidation, erosion and CMAS attack. The degradation leads to the initiation and propagation of cracks at or near the interface between the topcoat and bond coat, eventually merging into large-scale delamination and resulting in failure of the TBCs. Recent progress in the development of methods for mitigating the detrimental impact of these failure mechanisms via composition and processing modifications has been reviewed. Meanwhile, the applications of newly-emerging materials with superior properties have also been discussed. The review emphasises the relationships between composition, microstructure and properties of TBCs, which is beneficial for the exploration of the advanced TBCs with higher durability.  相似文献

CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 (CMAS) deposition significantly degrades the performance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, the microstructure evolution of CMAS glass at temperatures below its melting point was investigated in order to study the potential influence of temperature on the applicability of CMAS glass in TBCs. The CMAS glass fabricated in this study had a melting point of 1240 °C, became opaque, and underwent self-crystallization when the temperature reached 1000 °C. After heat treatment at 1050 °C, diopside and anorthite phases precipitated from the glass; at a higher temperature (1150 °C), diopside, anorthite, and wollastonite were formed as the self-crystallization products. An increase in the dwelling time resulted in the transformation of diopside to wollastonite and anorthite. At 1250 °C, all products formed a eutectic microstructure and melted. The results indicate that even at low temperatures, CMAS glass underwent microstructure evolution, which could influence the coating surface and stress distribution when deposited on TBCs.  相似文献

Calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) attack has been a great challenge for the application of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) in modern turbine engines. In this study, a series of prospective TBC candidate materials, Ba2REAlO5 (RE = Yb, Er, Dy), are found to have high resistance to CMAS attack. The rapid formation of a continuous crystalline layer on sample surface contributes to this desirable attribute. At 1250 °C, Ba2REAlO5 dissolve in the molten CMAS, accumulating Ba, RE and Al in the melt, which could trigger the crystallization of celsian, apatite and wollastonite crystals. Especially, the formation of the crystalline layer in the Ba2DyAlO5 sample is the fastest. This study also reveals that Ba is a useful element for altering CMAS composition to precipitate celsian. Thus, doping Ba2+ in yttria partially stabilized zirconia or other novel TBCs might be an attractive way of mitigating CMAS attack.  相似文献

Understanding self-crystallization characteristics of calcium-magnesium-alumina- silicate (CMAS) glass is of great significance for seeking for solution to its corrosion to thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Here, we design a series of experiments to investigate the relationship between CMAS self-crystallization behavior and cooling/heating rates and dwell temperature, and emphasize the potential influence of self-crystallization on CMAS corrosion behavior to TBCs. With the cooling rate decreasing, crystalline phases formed in a sequence of diopside, wollastonite and anorthite, and the thickness of the crystalline layer increased. During the heating process, diopside and melilite phases formed when the temperature was lower than 1050 °C; while at higher temperatures, melilite transformed to anorthite and wollastonite, independent on the heating rate. Although self-crystallization can slow molten CMAS penetration, the function on protecting TBCs from damage is limited, and other strategies alleviating CMAS corrosion are necessitated to be developed.  相似文献
