Tested the effects of racial group membership, race of E, and dialect on unstructured and probed recall. l6 Black and 16 White 4-6 mo old children were Ss. Subgroups of 4 Ss within each racial group were randomly assigned to the experimental conditions such that order of exposure to E (Black and White) and dialects Standard English vs Black English vernacular) were counterbalanced. Results show that Whites performed better than Blacks in Standard English, Blacks performed better than Whites in Black English vernacular, Blacks tested in Black English vernacular were equivalent to Whites tested in Standard English, and Whites performed better in Standard English than in Black English vernacular. When probed with questions, there was an overall increase in the proportion of correct information for both racial groups. 270 Black and 270 White children (ages 6–16.5 yrs) drawn from the national stratified random sample used in the standardization of the WISC-R were matched on age, sex, and WISC-R Full-Scale IQ to facilitate investigation of the patterns of specific cognitive abilities, as measured by the 12 subtests of the WISC-R, between the 2 racial groups. Multivariate analysis of the patterns of subtest differences between Whites and Blacks and group comparisons on 3 orthogonalized factor scores (Verbal, Performance, Memory) showed small but reliable average White–Black differences in patterns of ability. The IQ-matched racial groups showed no significant difference on the Verbal factor; Whites exceeded Blacks on the Performance (largely spatial visualization) factor; Blacks exceeded Whites on the Memory factor. Computed, in racial subgroups, the correlations of university climate and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores with 2 criteria of academic success--GPA and students' estimated probability of receiving a degree. Factor analyses of a 115-item university climate questionnaire were performed separately for samples of 138 Black and 550 White college students. SAT scores were significantly related to GPA for both Blacks and Whites, although they were not related to Ss' estimated probability of recieving a degree in either racial group. Some university climate scales were significantly related to the 2 criteria. Viewing the university in a positive way was associated (a) with high criterion scores for Whites and with low criterion scores for Blacks, and (b) with high SAT scores for Whites and low SAT scores for Blacks. Although GPA was significantly correlated with estimated probability of degree in both Black and White samples, the correlation was significantly higher in the Black sample. Reviewing 16 studies, D. Pritchard and A. Rosenblatt (see record 1980-11070-001) claimed to find no evidence that the MMPI is racially biased. M. Gynther and S. B. Green (see record 1980-11037-001), reviewing 40 studies, concluded that racial bias in the MMPI varies as a function of sampling, with bias more likely when normal Blacks are compared with normal Whites but not when abnormal groups are compared. The present study compared MMPI scores of 272 White and 56 Black alcoholics. Blacks scored significantly lower on a few scales (e.g., Hysteria), but profile differences were not clinically meaningful, particularly when the covariates of age, education, and socioeconomic status were controlled. Blacks differed appreciably on the Family Environment Scale (FES), however, rating social climates more positively than Whites. Findings that Blacks obtained negligible differences on a wholly White normed test (the MMPI), contrasted with the significant differences and better adjustment shown by Blacks over Whites on a test normed with minority-group representation (the FES), interject new considerations into the issue of racial bias. Whereas nonsignificant differences would not appear to support the contention of racial bias on the MMPI, FES results question whether such nonsignificance actually rules out test bias. In the United States, the incidence rates of multiple myeloma in Blacks are more than twice those in Whites, but the etiology of this cancer is poorly understood. A population-based case-control interview study of 571 subjects (365 White, 206 Black) with multiple myeloma and 2,122 controls (1,155 White, 967 Black) living in three areas of the United States (Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey) offered the opportunity to investigate the relationship with smoking and alcohol drinking and to evaluate whether these factors might contribute to the excess risk of multiple myeloma in Blacks. For Blacks and Whites of either gender, there were no significantly elevated risks associated with ever use of cigarettes or alcoholic beverages and no consistent patterns with either intensity or duration of use. These data support previous studies indicating that smoking and drinking are not related causally to the risk of multiple myeloma, and thus cannot account for the racial disparity in incidence rates.  相似文献

The new H+/K+ ATPase inhibitor pantoprazole, a substituted benzimidazole, is metabolized by the hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes 2C19 or 3A4 and subsequently undergoes phase II metabolism. The widely used beta 1-adrenoreceptor-blocking agent metoprolol is metabolized via CYP2D6. The influence of pantoprazole on the pharmacokinetics of an orally administered zero order kinetics formulation (ZOK) of metoprolol was the objective of this study. Eighteen volunteers (9 female, 9 male, age 20-44 years) completed the randomized, double-blind crossover study. Each subject received either 95 mg metoprolol and placebo (reference (R)) or 95 mg metoprolol and 40 mg pantoprazole (test (T)) as oral doses (sid) for 5 consecutive days. On day 5 of each period serum concentrations of R- and S-metoprolol were determined and a treadmill ergometry was performed. The primary pharmacokinetic characteristics for extent and rate of absorption were AUC(0-24h) and % PTF, respectively. To assess the pharmacodynamic effect of metoprolol the excess area under the effect vs. time curve was calculated for heart rate during ergometry (AUCexHR). Point estimate and 90% confidence limits (CI) for the ratios of population medians of T and R were given. The respective point estimates (90% CI) of the ratios of both primary and secondary characteristics were entirely within the equivalence range of 0.80 and 1.25 for both enantiomers of metoprolol. Moreover, equivalence could be shown for the pharmacodynamic characteristic AUCexHR. Hence, it was concluded that pantoprazole does not interact with metoprolol pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics. Therefore, no dose adjustment of metoprolol during therapy with pantoprazole is necessary.  相似文献

Examined the initial, unstructured interactions of 40 interracial (Black–White) dyads in which 3 factors were systematically varied. These factors were the disposition of the White dyad members to either seek out or shun interaction with Blacks, the race (Black vs White) of the experimenter, and the gender composition (male–male vs female–female) of the dyads. Results show that within dyads, White dyad members displayed more interactional involvement than their Black partners but experienced the interactions as more stressful and uncomfortable. Whites predisposed to avoid interaction with Blacks looked and smiled at their partners less than those predisposed to initiate interaction. Both Black and White members of these avoidance dyads reported heightened feelings of anxiety and concern about their interactions, but the moderating influences of the Whites' approach–avoidance dispositions on interaction behavior were essentially limited to conditions in which the experimenter was Black and the White S was a "solo minority." It is suggested that Black–White partner effects are attributable to differing amounts of cross-race contact typically experienced by Blacks and Whites. Black–White experimenter effects are interpreted in terms of S. E. Taylor's (1981) hypothesis that stereotypes and related dispositions are activated in social contexts in which group membership is made salient. Nicotine is primarily metabolized to cotinine by cytochromes P450 (CYPs). The degree of variation in the metabolism of nicotine to cotinine and the relative roles of the polymorphic enzymes CYP2A6 and CYP2D6 in this metabolism were investigated. The apparent K(m) and V(max) values (mean +/- S.D.) for cotinine formation in human liver microsomes (n = 31) were 64.9 +/- 32.7 microM and 28.1 +/- 28.7 nmol/mg of protein/hr, respectively. A 30-fold difference was seen among the individual V(max) values, with four livers showing significantly higher rates of cotinine formation. CYP2D6 is unimportant in nicotine metabolism because quinidine (a CYP2D6 inhibitor) had little effect on inhibition of cotinine formation; V(max) values for dextromethorphan (CYP2D6 probe substrate) and nicotine (n = 9) did not correlate (r = .49, P = .18), and a cDNA CYP2D6 expression system failed to metabolize nicotine to cotinine. CYP2A6 appears to be the major P450 involved in human nicotine metabolism to cotinine. Coumarin, a specific and selective CYP2A6 substrate, competitively inhibited cotinine formation by 85 +/- 11% (mean +/- S.D.) in 31 human livers. The K(i) value for this inhibition ranged from 1 to 5 microM, and a CYP2A6 monoclonal antibody inhibited cotinine formation by >75%. Immunochemically determined CYP2A6 correlated significantly with nicotine-to-cotinine V(max) values (r = .90, n = 30, P < .001) and to inhibition of nicotine metabolism by coumarin (r = .94, n = 30, P < .001). These data indicate that nicotine metabolism is highly variable among individual livers and that this is due to variable expression of CYP2A6, not CYP2D6.  相似文献

80 Black and 74 White college students assigned traits, from a list of 80, to the Black lower class, Black middle class, White lower class, and White middle class. Each S rated the 5 or fewer traits that he or she had chosen as being most typical of the respective race–class groups from –5 (unfavorable) to +5 (favorable) for the given groups. Ss also assigned themselves to 1 of 4 classes: lower class, working class, middle class, or upper class. On the basis of these judgments, the Ss within each racial group were classified as perceiving themselves to be above or below the median of their own race's distribution. White Ss assigned more favorable characteristics to the middle than to the lower class and did not rate Blacks lower than Whites. Black Ss made a similar, but smaller, social class distinction and, in addition, generally perceived Blacks more favorably than Whites. Two experiments investigated the relationship between nonverbal behavior and the racial composition of a teacher–student dyad. The Multifactor Racial Attitude Inventory was used to measure prejudice. In Exp I, 36 high- and low-prejudiced White female undergraduates, acting as teachers, were led to praise successful White and Black students (confederates). Analysis of samples of nonverbal behavior showed that high-prejudiced teachers nonverbally discriminated between White and Black students (favoring Whites) significantly more than low-prejudiced teachers. In Exp II, 40 White and Black teachers (female undergraduates) taught successful White and Black students (confederates). Results show that both Whites and Blacks behaved nonverbally more positively to a student of their own race than to a student of the other race, although only same-race judges (12 White female undergraduates) could distinguish the differences in affect displayed by the Ss. Facial muscle activity and self-reports were examined for racial bias in 3 studies. In the first 2 experiments, While participants imagined cooperating with a Black or White partner. Experiment 1 manipulated reward structure in the context of cooperating with a deficient partner. Experiment 2 manipulated partner deficiency and willingness to expend compensatory effort. On both facial EMG and self-report measures, joint rewards produced more negative affect than independent rewards. However, all partners were liked more when they were willing to try to compensate for their deficits. In addition, more liking was reported for Black partners, but EMG activity indicated bias against Blacks. Experiment 3 investigated individual differences in prejudice. Again, a greater preference for Blacks than Whites occurred on self-report measures, but in their facial muscle activity, high-prejudiced participants exhibited bias against Blacks.  相似文献

Studied the cardiovascular response to the stress of mental arithmetic in 121 young Black and White adults. Stress-induced reactivity was studied before and following 14 days of oral sodium loading (10 gm NaCl per day). Marginal hypertensives, both Black and White, had greater systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels and greater diastolic BP levels in response to stress. Whites had a greater SBP level during mental stress than Blacks and greater reactivity. The prevalence of sodium sensitivity was greater in Blacks (37.3%) than in Whites (18.4%). Sodium loading did not augment the BP reactivity to the mental stress in any of the racial or BP groups. Data demonstrate racial variation in the cardiovascular response to centrally medicated adrenergic stimuli. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

To test children's use of race and social behavior as cues in social acceptance, 128 Black and White male kindergartners and 1st graders rated 6 unknown videotaped target children for likability. Targets varied factorially on race (Black or White) and exhibited either positive, negative, or neutral classroom social behavior. Across age, socioeconomic status, and race, Ss used behavior as a cue, accounting for 50% of likability variance. Positive targets were liked equivalently, but Black neutral and negative targets were liked less than White counterparts. Racial but not socioeconomic status differences in the use of behaviors as social cues were found. Negative targets were liked more by Blacks than Whites and neutral targets were liked more by Whites than Blacks. (9 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

41 White and 37 Black psychotherapists with an average of 8.2 yrs' experience completed a 41-item questionnaire regarding psychotherapy with same- and opposite-race clients. White Ss did not experience racial issues in psychotherapy with the same salience that Black Ss did, yet they reported higher levels of subjective distress in cross-racial treatment. This distress focused on negative attitudes of clients, therapists' feelings of not being able to help or confront opposite race clients, or being oversolicitous or too distant with opposite-race clients. Both therapist groups reported equivalent abilities to empathize with opposite-race clients, but Blacks and Whites differed on a number of questions of racial attitudes and stereotyping. The effects of the intimacy of an interviewer's disclosure and the racial composition of a dyad on interviewees' liking for an interviewer, impressions of the interviewer, and subsequent self-disclosure were examined in a peer counseling analogue. We predicted and found that intimate disclosure by an interviewer is especially useful in eliciting self-disclosure from Black subjects. Furthermore, we predicted and found that differences in liking for and impressions of intimate and nonintimate interviewers would be particularly pronounced in those dyads in which the interviewer was White and the interviewee was Black with greater liking for and more positive impressions of the intimately disclosing interviewer. We discuss the implications of these results for the reported tendency for Blacks to terminate counseling prematurely and to disclose less than Whites in counseling. Investigated the effects of deindividuation, anger, and race-of-victim on aggression displayed by 96 White male undergraduates. Deindividuating situational cues produced an internal state of deindividuation that mediated aggressive behavior. Deindividuation theories are extended by the finding that the internal state of deindividuation was composed not only of the factors Self-Awareness and Altered Experience, but also Group Cohesiveness, Responsibility, and Time Distortion. As predicted, nonangered Whites were less aggressive toward Black than White victims, but angered Whites were more aggressive toward Blacks than Whites. Interracial behavior was consistent with new, egalitarian norms if anger was not aroused, but regressed to the old, historical pattern of racial discrimination if anger was aroused. This pattern of interracial behavior was interpreted in terms of a new form of racism: regressive racism. (36 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

These meta-analyses examine race differences in self-esteem among 712 datapoints. Blacks scored higher than Whites on self-esteem measures (d=0.19), but Whites scored higher than other racial minority groups, including Hispanics (d=-0.09), Asians (d=-0.30), and American Indians (d=-0.21). Most of these differences were smallest in childhood and grew larger with age. Blacks' self-esteem increased over time relative to Whites', with the Black advantage not appearing until the 1980s. Black and Hispanic samples scored higher on measures without an academic self-esteem subscale. Relative to Whites, minority males had lower self-esteem than did minority females, and Black and Hispanic self-esteem was higher in groups with high socioeconomic status. The results are most consistent with a cultural interpretation of racial differences in self-esteem. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Although theories of prejudice have been extensively catalogued, empirical confrontations between competing theories are rare. The present study tested 2 major theoretical approaches to prejudice by Whites against Blacks: realistic group conflict theory, which emphasizes the tangible threats Blacks might pose to Whites' private lives; and a sociocultural theory of prejudice termed symbolic racism, which emphasizes abstract, moralistic resentments of Blacks, presumably traceable to preadult socialization. The main dependent variable was suburban Whites' voting behavior in 2 mayoral elections in Los Angeles, both strongly influenced by racial issues, that matched the same 2 candidates, 1 Black and 1 White. In both elections, symbolic racism (sociocultural prejudice) was the major determinant of voting against the Black candidate for people removed from possible personal threats posed by Blacks as well as for those at risk. Direct racial threats to Whites' private lives (to their jobs, their neighborhoods, their children's schooling, their families' safety) had little effect on either anti-Black voting behavior or symbolic racism. Implications for theories of prejudice and for interpretations of the effects of voters' private lives on their political behavior are discussed. Investigated the question of racial bias in the MMPI by comparing responses of 252 Black and 120 White compulsive heroin users on both (a) empirically derived validity and clinical scales and (b) intuitively constructed content scales. Ss were male veterans admitted to a drug treatment program at a VA Hospital. In both univariate and multivariate ANOVAs and covariance of individual scales and overall profiles, Black users differed significantly from White users; the direction of differences was opposite to that reported for Blacks in previous studies of normal and psychiatric samples. Blacks scored significantly lower on 6 clinical scales (i.e., Infrequency, Depression, Psychopathic Deviate, Psychasthenia, Schizophrenia, and Social Introversion) when profile validity and the covariates age, intelligence, and socioeconomic status were both controlled and uncontrolled. On content scales, Whites displayed greater personality disturbance in Social Maladjustment and Family Problems, whereas Blacks obtained higher scores on Feminine Interests and Phobias. Results show that methodologically the question of a Black bias in the MMPI awaits additional information about the interaction of ethnicity with clinical samples; substantively, the results refute the assumption of personality trait communality among compulsive heroin users and suggest that ethnicity is an influential S background characteristic by which subgroups of heroin users might be identified. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and 3-year incidence of dementia in Blacks and Whites age 65 and older in a five-county Piedmont area of North Carolina. DESIGN: Stratified random sample of members of the Duke Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly (EPESE) (baseline n = 4,136; 55% Black; weighted n = 28,000). Prevalence study members were differentially selected on the basis of score on the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire at the second in-person Duke EPESE wave. Incidence study members included all persons with obvious cognitive decline over a 3-year period, and a 10% sample of the remainder. MEASUREMENTS: Self- and informant report on health history, functional status, and memory. Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) Neuropsychology Battery administered to all subjects, and CERAD Clinical Battery to those with impaired memory. Clinical consensus to determine presence and type of dementia. RESULTS: Prevalence of dementia for persons > or =68 years old was 0.070 (95% confidence interval = 0.021-0.119) for Blacks and 0.072 (0.022-0.122) for Whites. Rates for Black men (0.078, 0.001-0.155) exceeded those for Black women (0.066, 0.003-0.129), but gender rates for Whites were reversed (men: 0.044, 0.000-0.103), (women: 0.087, 0.015-0.160). Neither race nor gender differences were significant. Prevalence of dementia increased through age 84 and tapered off thereafter. Three-year incidence of dementia was 0.058 (0.026-0.090) for Blacks and 0.062 (0.027-0.097) for Whites. Neither race nor gender differences were significant. Incidence increased through age 84, but moderated thereafter for all but Black men. The proportional representation of different types of dementia varied little by race. CONCLUSION: Prevalence, 3-year incidence, and types of dementia are comparable in Black and White elderly in the Piedmont area of North Carolina.  相似文献
