The lack of efficient methods for de‐trending of wind speed resource data may lead to erroneous wind turbine fatigue and ultimate load predictions. The present paper presents two models, which quantify the effect of an assumed linear trend on wind speed standard deviations as based on available statistical data only. The first model is a pure time series analysis approach, which quantifies the effect of non‐stationary characteristics of ensemble mean wind speeds on the estimated wind speed standard deviations as based on mean wind speed statistics only. This model is applicable to statistics of arbitrary types of time series. The second model uses the full set of information and includes thus additionally observed wind speed standard deviations to estimate the effect of ensemble mean non‐stationarities on wind speed standard deviations. This model takes advantage of a simple physical relationship between first‐order and second‐order statistical moments of wind speeds in the atmospheric boundary layer and is therefore dedicated to wind speed time series but is not applicable to time series in general. The capabilities of the proposed models are discussed by comparing model predictions with conventionally de‐trended characteristics of measured wind speeds using data where high sampled time series are available, and a traditional de‐trending procedure therefore can be applied. This analysis shows that the second model performs significantly better than the first model, and thus in turn that the model constraint, introduced by the physical link between the first and second statistical moments, proves very efficient in the present context. © 2013 The Authors. An experimental study was performed to assess the feasibility of passive air jet vortex‐generators to the performance enhancement of a domestic scale wind turbine. It has been demonstrated that these simple devices, properly designed and implemented, can provide worthwhile performance benefits for domestic wind turbines of the type investigated in this study. In particular, this study shows that they can increase the maximum output power coefficient, reduce the cut‐in wind speed and improve power output at lower wind speeds while reducing the sensitivity to wind speed unsteadiness. A theoretical performance analysis of a 500 kW stall‐regulated wind turbine, based on blade element momentum theory, indicates that passive air jet vortex‐generators would be capable of recovering some of the power loss because of blade stall, thereby allowing attainment of rated power output at slightly lower average wind speeds. High resolution measurements of wind speed and energy generation from an instrumented Bergey XL.1 small wind turbine were used to investigate the effect of ambient turbulence levels on wind turbine energy production. It was found that ambient turbulent intensity impacts energy production, but that the impact is different at different wind speeds. At low wind speeds, increased turbulence appeared to increase energy production from the turbine. However, at wind speeds near the turbine furling speed, elevated turbulence resulted in decreased energy production, likely to turbulent gusts initiating furling events. Investigation of measurements recorded at 1 Hz showed a time lag of one to 2 s between a change in wind speed and the resulting change in energy production. Transient changes in wind speed of only 1 s duration did not impact energy production, however, longer duration changes in wind speed were tracked reasonably well by energy production.  相似文献

As wind turbines are becoming larger, wind turbine control must now encompass load control objectives as well as power and speed control to achieve a low cost of energy. Due to the inherent non‐linearities in a wind turbine system, the use of non‐linear model‐based controllers has the potential to increase control performance. A non‐linear feedback linearization controller with an Extended Kalman Filter is successfully used to control a FAST model of the controls advanced research turbine with active blade, tower and drive‐train dynamics in above rated wind conditions. The controller exhibits reductions in low speed shaft fatigue damage equivalent loads, power regulation and speed regulation when compared to a Gain Scheduled Proportional Integral controller, designed for speed regulation alone. The feedback linearization controller shows better rotor speed regulation than a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) at close to rated wind speeds, but poorer rotor speed regulation at higher wind speeds. This is due to modeling inaccuracies and the addition of unmodeled dynamics during simulation. Similar performance between the feedback linearization controller and the LQR in reducing drive‐train fatigue damage and power regulation is observed. Improvements in control performance may be achieved through increasing the accuracy of the non‐linear model used for controller design. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This article investigates the aero‐elastic response of the DTU 10‐MW RWT blade in deep stall conditions with angles of attack in the vicinity of 90 degrees. The simulations were conducted with the high‐fidelity fluid–structure interaction simulation tool HAWC2CFD employing the multi‐body‐based structural model of HAWC2 and the incompressible computational fluid dynamics solver EllipSys3D. The study utilizes detached eddy simulation computations and considers the three‐dimensional blade geometry including blade twist and taper. A preliminary frequency analysis of the load variations on a stiff blade showed that an inclined inflow with a velocity component along the blade axis can trigger a spanwise correlated vortex shedding over large parts of the blade. Moderate wind speeds were sufficient to generate vortex shedding with frequencies close to the first edgewise eigenfrequency of the blade. Aero‐elastic computations of the elastic blade confirmed the findings of the frequency analysis. Inflow conditions with inclination angles between Ψ = 20° and Ψ = 55° and relatively low to moderate wind speeds between V = 16 and V = 26ms?1 were sufficient to trigger severe edgewise blade vibrations with blade tip amplitudes of several metres. The investigated inflow conditions are considered realistic and might occur when the wind turbine is idling or standing still and the yaw system is unable to align the wind turbine with the incoming wind. To identify the influence of wind shear and turbulence on wind turbine performance, flat terrain wind profiles are analysed up to a height of 160 m. The profiles' shapes are found to extend from no shear to high wind shear, and on many occasions, local maxima within the profiles are also observed. Assuming a certain turbine hub height, the profiles with hub‐height wind speeds between 6 m s?1 and 8 m s?1 are normalized at 7 m s?1 and grouped to a number of mean shear profiles. The energy in the profiles varies considerably for the same hub‐height wind speed. These profiles are then used as input to a Blade Element Momentum model that simulates the Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbine. The analysis is carried out as time series simulations where the electrical power is the primary characterization parameter. The results of the simulations indicate that wind speed measurements at different heights over the swept rotor area would allow the determination of the electrical power as a function of an ‘equivalent wind speed’ where wind shear and turbulence intensity are taken into account. Electrical power is found to correlate significantly better to the equivalent wind speed than to the single point hub‐height wind speed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

High wind speeds can pose a great risk to structures and operations conducted in offshore environments. When forecasting wind speeds, most models focus on the average wind speeds over a given period, but this value alone represents only a small part of the true wind conditions. We present statistical models to predict the full distribution of the maximum‐value wind speeds in a 3 h interval. We take a detailed look at the performance of linear models, generalized additive models and multivariate adaptive regression splines models using meteorological covariates such as gust speed, wind speed, convective available potential energy, Charnock, mean sea‐level pressure and temperature, as given by the European Center for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts forecasts. The models are trained to predict the mean value of maximum wind speed, and the residuals from training the models are used to develop the full probabilistic distribution of maximum wind speed. Knowledge of the maximum wind speed for an offshore location within a given period can inform decision‐making regarding turbine operations, planned maintenance operations and power grid scheduling in order to improve safety and reliability, and probabilistic forecasts result in greater value to the end‐user. The models outperform traditional baseline forecast methods and achieve low predictive errors on the order of 1–2 m s?1. We show the results of their predictive accuracy for different lead times and different training methodologies. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

For region‐2 operation of wind turbines in practice, the optimal torque gain can deviate from the nominal value because of the variations in turbine and wind conditions. The extremum‐seeking control (ESC) has shown its potential as a model‐free region‐2 control solution in some recent work; however, the ESC with rotor power feedback suffers from undesirable convergence under fluctuating wind. In this paper, we propose to use an estimated power coefficient as the objective function for the torque‐gain ESC, where the hub‐height free‐stream wind speed (FSWS) is estimated with the nacelle anemometer measurement on the basis of the so‐called nacelle transfer function (NTF) between the nacelle anemometer and met‐tower measurement. A sensitivity analysis is performed to quantify the impact of the wind speed estimation error on the estimation of power coefficient. An ESC integrated interregion switching scheme is proposed to avoid the load increase. Simulation results show that, compared with the power feedback‐based ESC, the proposed method can greatly improve the convergence rate of ESC under fluctuating wind, even under relatively large wind speed estimation error. Evaluation for the fatigue loads of wind turbine shows that the proposed control strategy induces mild increase of the wind turbine load.  相似文献

So far, wind energy has not played a major role in the group of technologies for embedded generation in the built environment. However, the wind flow around conventional tall buildings generates differential pressures, which may cause an enhanced mass flow through a building‐integrated turbine. As a first step, a prototype of a small‐scale ducted wind turbine has been developed and tested, which seems to be feasible for integration into the leading roof edge of such a building. Here an experimental and numerical investigation of the flow through building‐integrated ducting is presented. Pressure and wind speed measurements have been carried out on a wind tunnel model at different angles of incident wind, and different duct configurations have been tested. It was confirmed that wind speeds up to 30% higher than in the approaching freestream may be induced in the duct, and good performance was obtained for angles of incident wind up to ±60°. The experimental work proceeded in parallel with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. The geometry of the system was difficult to represent to the required level of accuracy, and modelling was restricted to a few simple cases, for which the flow field in the building‐integrated duct was compared with experimental results. Generally good agreement was obtained, indicating that CFD techniques could play a major role in the design process. Predicted power of the proposed device suggests that it will compare favourably with conventional small wind turbines and photovoltaics in an urban environment. The proposal of hybrid drive grid‐connected wind turbine based on speed regulating differential mechanism (SRDM) has been made in this paper to generate constant‐frequency power without fully‐ or partially‐rated frequency converters so as well improve electric power quality. However, disturbances in the power grid including sudden load fluctuation and sub‐synchronous resonance (SSR) can lead to the pulsating torque to act on the shaft section between SG and exciter at the main generator collector, such that the speed regulating accuracy of SRDM is seriously affected. As a result, this paper synthesizes a new‐type fractional‐order sliding mode controller (FOSMC) with a load torque observer (LTO) for the high‐accuracy speed control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in SRDM. Taking advantage of ridge regression algorithm, related parameters including rotational inertia and viscous friction coefficient of speed regulating system are calculated accurately. Finally, comparative experiments are carried out under four cases of mean of 5, 10, 13, and 21 m/s wind speeds to verify the satisfactory performances of designed FOSMC with LTO. Comparative experimental results show that FOSMC with LTO can effectively eliminate undesirable chattering effect. Additionally, under operating conditions of changing wind speeds, SSR, and sudden load fluctuation in power grid, the output speed of SRDM that corresponds directly to the frequency output of SG can be steadily and accurately regulated by using proposed control scheme. SRDM equipped with designed controller enables the power frequency to meet the National Standard of PR China perfectly.  相似文献

Forfloating offshore wind turbines, rotors are under coupled motions of rotating and platform‐induced motions because of hydrodynamics impacts. Notably, the coupled motion of platform pitching and rotor rotating induces unsteadiness and nonlinear aerodynamics in turbine operations; thus having a strong effect on the rotor performances including thrust and power generation. The present work aims at developing a computational fluid dynamics model for simulations of rotor under floating platform induced motions. The rotor motion is realized using arbitrary mesh interface, and wind flows are modelled by incompressible Navier‐Stokes flow solver appended by the k  ? ω shear stress transport turbulence model to resolve turbulence quantities. In order to investigate the fully coupled motion of floating wind turbine, the six degree of freedom solid body motion solver is extended to couple with multiple motions, especially for the motion of rotor coupled with the prescribed surge‐heave‐pitch motion of floating platform. The detailed methodology of multiple motion coupling is also described and discussed in this work. Both steady and unsteady simulations of offshore floating wind turbine are considered in the present work. The steady aerodynamic simulation of offshore floating wind turbine is implemented by the multiple reference frames approach and for the transient simulation, the rotor motion is realized using arbitrary mesh interface. A rigorous benchmark of the present numerical model is performed by comparing to the reported literatures. The detailed elemental thrust and power comparisons of wind turbine are carried out by comparing with the results from FAST developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory and various existing numerical data with good agreement. The proposed approach is then applied for simulations of National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5MW turbine in coupled platform motion at various wind speeds under a typical load case scenario. Transient effect of flows over turbines rotor is captured with good prediction of turbine performance as compared with existing data from FAST. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of long‐term ‘characteristic’ loads associated with an ultimate limit state for design of a 5‐MW bottom‐supported offshore wind turbine is the focus of this study. Specifically, we focus on predicting the long‐term fore–aft tower bending moment at the mudline and the out‐of‐plane bending moment at the blade root of a monopile‐supported shallow‐water offshore wind turbine. We employ alternative probabilistic predictions of long‐term loads using inverse reliability procedures in establishing the characteristic loads for design. Because load variability depends on the environmental conditions (defining the wind speed and wave height), we show that long‐term predictions that explicitly account for such load variability are more accurate, especially for environmental states associated with above‐rated wind speeds and associated wave heights. The non‐linear behaviour of wind turbines demands control strategies that guarantee the robustness of the closed‐loop system. Linear parameter‐varying (LPV) controllers adapt their dynamics to the system operating points, and the robustness of the closed loop is guaranteed in the controller design process. An LPV collective pitch controller has been developed within this work to regulate the generator speed in the above rated power production control zone. The performance of this LPV controller has been compared with two baseline control strategies previously designed, on the basis of classical gain scheduling methods and linear time‐invariant robust H controllers. The synthesis of the LPV controller is based on the solution of a linear matrix inequalities system, proposed in a mixed‐sensitivity control scenario where not only weight functions are used but also an LPV model of the wind turbine is necessary. As a contribution, the LPV model used is derived from a family of linear models extracted from the linearization process of the wind turbine non‐linear model. The offshore wind turbine of 5 MW defined in the Upwind European project is the used reference non‐linear model, and it has been modelled using the GH Bladed 4.0 software package. The designed LPV controller has been validated in GH Bladed, and an exhaustive analysis has been carried out to calculate fatigue load reductions on wind turbine components, as well as to analyse the load mitigation in some extreme cases. A method of increasing the performance of wind farms has been established by limiting the lateral separation between neighbouring wind turbines. The close proximity of the wind turbines creates a beneficial in‐field blockage effect that results in a core of increased speed that is accelerated through the gap between the turbines. A preceding study indicated that the performance of three wind turbines can be increased by over 10% with tip‐to‐tip separation of 0.5 diameters (D) compared with the power output of the respective turbines in isolation. A corresponding flow‐mapping study has been completed in the current work using a single‐normal hot‐wire anemometer to characterize the increased flow speed through a narrow lateral gap, leading to the observation of a region of increased speed that occurs between 0D and 2.5D downstream of the gap between laterally spaced wind turbines. The experimental results were confirmed by conducting a series of computational simulations with the generalized unsteady vortex particle discrete vortex method code. The simulations were conducted with three rotors arranged in five different configurations, and the increase in power generated by the multi‐rotor configurations closely followed the observed experimental trends. The closely spaced lateral wind turbine configurations may have the ability to increase the annual capacity factor of wind farms while reducing wind farm land use requirements. A winglet optimization method is developed and tested for a model‐scale wind turbine. The best‐performing winglet shape is obtained by constructing a Kriging surrogate model, which is refined using an infill criterion based on expected improvement. The turbine performance is simulated by solving the incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations, and the turbulent flow is predicted using the Spalart‐Allmaras turbulence model. To validate the simulated performance, experiments are performed in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology wind tunnel. According to the simulations, the optimized winglet increases the turbine power and thrust by 7.8% and 6.3%, respectively. The wind tunnel experiments show that the turbine power increases by 8.9%, while the thrust increases by 7.4%. When introducing more turbulence in the wind tunnel to reduce laminar separation, the turbine power and thrust due to the winglet increases by 10.3% and 14.9%, respectively.  相似文献

Spatially resolved measurements of microscale winds are retrieved using scanning dual‐Doppler lidar and then compared with independent in situ wind measurements. Data for this study were obtained during a month‐long field campaign conducted at a site in north‐central Oklahoma in November of 2010. Observational platforms include one instrumented 60 m meteorological tower and two scanning coherent Doppler lidars. The lidars were configured to perform coordinated dual‐Doppler scans surrounding the 60 m tower, and the resulting radial velocity observations were processed to retrieve the three‐component velocity vector field on surfaces defined by the intersecting scan planes. The dual‐Doppler analysis method is described, and three‐dimensional visualizations of the retrieved fields are presented. The retrieved winds are compared with sonic anemometer (SA) measurements at the 60 m level on the tower. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the retrievals and the SA wind speeds was greater than 0.97, and the wind direction difference was very small (<0.1o), suggesting that the dual‐Doppler technique can be used to examine fine‐scale variations in the flow. However, the mean percent difference between the SA and dual‐Doppler wind speed was approximately 15%, with the SA consistently measuring larger wind speeds. To identify the source of the discrepancy, a multi‐instrument intercomparison study was performed involving lidar wind speeds derived from standard velocity‐azimuth display (VAD) analysis of plan position indicator scan data, a nearby 915 MHz radar wind profiler (RWP) and radiosondes. The lidar VAD, RWP and radiosondes wind speeds were found to agree to within 3%. By contrast, SA wind speeds were found to be approximately 14% larger than the lidar VAD wind speeds. These results suggest that the SA produced wind speeds that were too large. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The relation between power performance and turbulence intensity for a VAWT H‐rotor is studied using logged data from a 14 month (discontinuous) period with the H‐rotor operating in wind speeds up to 9 m/s. The turbine, designed originally for a nominal power of 200 kW, operated during this period mostly in a restricted mode due to mechanical concerns, reaching power levels up to about 80 kW. Two different approaches are used for presenting results, one that can be compared to power curves consistent with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard and one that allows isolating the effect of turbulence from the cubic variation of power with wind speed. Accounting for this effect, the turbine still shows slightly higher efficiency at higher turbulence, proposing that the H‐rotor is well suited for wind sites with turbulent winds. The operational data are also used to create a Cp(λ) curve, showing slightly lower Cp compared with a curve simulated by a double multiple streamtube model. Dynamic stall was controlled on a double‐bladed H‐Rotor vertical axis wind turbine model using pulsed dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators in a feed‐forward control configuration. The azimuthal angles of plasma actuation initiation and termination, that produced the largest increases in power, were determined parametrically on the upstream half of the turbine azimuth in a low‐speed blow‐down wind tunnel at wind speeds of 7 m/s. A mathematical model, together with instantaneous turbine speed, was used to estimate transient torque and power developed by the turbine under the influence of plasma actuation. Overall performance improvements were based on changes between the final actuated and initial baseline results. A remarkable result of this investigation was that a net turbine power increase of 10% was measured. This was achieved by systematically reducing plasma pulsation duty cycles as well as the plasma initiation and termination angles. Nevertheless, it was determined that further performance increases could be achieved by changing the actuator's dielectric material, increasing the turbine radius and developing a method for control of dynamic stall on both the upwind (inboard of the blades) and downwind (outboard of the blades) halves of the turbine azimuth. The aerodynamic characteristics of a kind of bionic wind turbine blades with a sinusoidal leading edge have been investigated in this paper based on a three‐dimensional Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes simulation. The calculated results show that compared with a straight leading‐edge blade, the new‐type blade has a great improvement in shaft torque at high wind speeds. The localized vortices shedding from the leading‐edge tubercles, which can generate a much greater peak of the leading‐edge suction pressure than that from the straight leading‐edge case, are the physical essentials to enhance the wavy blade's aerodynamic performances as the blade goes into stall. In particular, the outboard segment from the 60%R station to the blade tip is the key region for wavy leading‐edge blades to improve the aerodynamic characteristics at high‐speed inflows. In this key region, a wavy blade can obtain a greater power output as the wavelength l and the waveheight δ increase. The present numerical results also show that the wavy leading‐edge shape is unfavorable for a wind turbine blade under the design conditions (e.g., at the rated wind speed). At these conditions, an early boundary‐layer separation as a result of the geometric disturbances of the leading‐edge tubercles will inevitably result in a visible shaft‐torque reduction in the wavy‐blade cases. Anyway, the wavy blades still tend to generate a more robust power output as a whole from 10 to 20 m s ?1 than the original NREL phase‐VI blade. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
