More successful results have been obtained in butt‐ and overlap‐joining of Al‐alloy plates by a recently developed solid state joining technique, namely friction stir welding (FSW), than in more conventional fusion welding processes. In this joining technique, no fusion takes place in the joint area of the plates welded. This novel joining method also offers the potential to weld some other materials rather than Al‐alloys, such as Mg‐alloys, brasses and low strength steels. In this study, the applicability of friction stir welding to brasses, namely 90 %Cu‐10 %Zn and 70 %Cu‐30 %Zn alloys, has been investigated. The joint performance was determined by conducting optical microscopy, microhardness mesurements and mechanical testing (e.g. tensile and bend tests). The effect of welding speed on the joint quality at a given rotational speed of the stirring pin (i.e. 1600 rpm) was also determined for both alloys. The highest joint performances were obtained at a welding speed of 210 mm/min for both alloys.  相似文献

The aircraft aluminium alloys generally present low weldability by traditional fusion welding process. The development of the friction stir welding has provided an alternative improved way of satisfactorily producing aluminium joints, in a faster and reliable manner. In this present work, the influence of process and tool parameters on tensile strength properties of AA7075-T6 joints produced by friction stir welding was analysed. Square butt joints were fabricated by varying process parameters and tool parameters. Strength properties of the joints were evaluated and correlated with the microstructure, microhardness of weld nugget. From this investigation it is found that the joint fabricated at a tool rotational speed of 1400 rpm, welding speed of 60 mm/min, axial force of 8 kN, using the tool with 15 mm shoulder diameter, 5 mm pin diameter, 45 HRc tool hardness yielded higher strength properties compared to other joints.  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to optimise the welding parameters for friction stir spot welded non-heat-treatable AA3003-H12 aluminium alloy sheets using a Taguchi orthogonal array. The welding parameters, such as the tool rotational speed, tool plunge depth and dwell time, were determined according to the Taguchi orthogonal table L9 using a randomised approach. The optimum welding parameters for the peak tensile shear load of the joints were predicted, and the individual importance of each parameter on the tensile shear load of the friction stir spot weld was evaluated by examining the signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) results. The optimum levels of the plunge depth, dwell time and tool rotational speed were found to be 4.8 mm, 2 s and 1500 rpm, respectively. The ANOVA results indicated that the tool plunge depth has the higher statistical effect with 69.26% on the tensile shear load, followed by the dwell time and rotational speed. The tensile shear load of the friction stir spot welding (FSSW) joints increased with increasing plunge depth. Additionally, examination of the weld cross-sections, microhardness tests and fracture characterisation of the selected friction spot welded joints were conducted to understand the better performance of the joints. All the fractures of the joints during tensile testing occurred at stir zone (SZ), where the bonded section was minimum. The tensile shear load and tensile deformation of the FSSW joints increased linearly with increasing the bonded size. The finer grain size in the SZ led to the higher hardness, which resulted in higher fracture strength. When the tensile shear load of the joints increased approximately 3-fold, the failure energy absorption of the joints increased approximately 15-fold.  相似文献

Copper (T2) and aluminium alloy (5A06) were welded by friction stir welding (FSW). The microstructure, mechanical properties and phase constituents of FSW joints were studied by metallography, tensile testing machine and X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the high quality weld joint could be obtained when tool rotational speed is 950 rpm, and travel speed is 150 mm/min. The maximum value of tensile strength is about 296 MPa. The metal Cu and Al close to copper side in the weld nugget (WN) zone showed a lamellar alternating structure characteristic. However, a mixed structure characteristic of Cu and Al existed in the aluminium side of weld nugget (WN) zone. There were no new Cu-Al intermetallic compounds in the weld nugget zone.  相似文献

Self-reacting friction stir welding (SR-FSW), also called bobbin-tool friction stir welding (BT-FSW), is a solid state welding process similar to friction stir welding (FSW) except that the tool has two opposing shoulders instead of the shoulder and a backing plate found in FSW. The tool configuration results in greater heat input and a symmetrical weld macrostructure. A significant amount of information has been published in the literature concerning traditional FSW while little has been published about SR-FSW. An optimization experiment was performed using a factorial design to evaluate the effect of process parameters on the weld temperature, surface and internal quality, and mechanical properties of self-reacting friction stir welded aluminum alloy 6061-T6 butt joints. The parameters evaluated were tool rotational speed, traverse speed, and tool plunge force. A correlation between weld temperature, defect formation (specifically galling and void formation), and mechanical properties was found. Optimum parameters were determined for the welding of 8-mm-thick 6061-T6 plate.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to present a case study relating to the dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) ability of AA 7075‐T651 and AA 6013‐T6 by applying pin offset technique. An orthogonal array L18 was conducted to perform the overlapped weld seams using three different values of pin offset, welding speed and tool rotational speed along with two different pin profiles determine the impact of welding parameters on the tensile properties of friction stir welded joints. The nugget zone for each of overlapped weld seams exhibited a complex structure and also, the pin offset and profile also were found to have a great impact on the microstructural evolution of the nugget zone. The ultimate tensile strength, elongation at the rapture and bending strength of welded joints were measured in the ranges of 194–215 MPa, 1.79–3.34 % and 203–352 MPa. From the Taguchi based Grey relational analysis, the optimum welding condition was determined for the welded joint performed using a single fluted pin profile with the zero pin offset, tool rotational speed of 630 min?1 and welding speed of 63 mm/min. Microstructural and macro‐structural observations revealed that welded joints exhibiting lower tensile strength are consistent of various types of defects (e. g. cracks, tunnels and cavities). The fracture location of welded joints was found to be on the heat affected zone and between the heat affected zone and AA 6013‐base metal. Abstract

The microstructural change related with the hardness profile has been evaluated for friction stir welded, age hardenable 6005 Al alloy. Frictional heat and plastic flow during friction stir welding created fine and equiaxed grains in the stir zone (SZ), and elongated and recovered grains in the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ). The heat affected zone (HAZ), identified only by the hardness result because there is no difference in grain structure compared to the base metal, was formed beside the weld zone. A softened region was formed near the weld zone during the friction stir welding process. The softened region was characterised by the dissolution and coarsening of the strengthening precipitate during friction stir welding. Sound joints in 6005 Al alloys were successfully formed under a wide range of friction stir welding conditions. The maximum tensile strength, obtained at 507 mm min-1 welding speed and 1600 rev min-1 tool rotation speed, was 220 MPa, which was 85% of the strength of the base metal.  相似文献

The relatively new welding process friction stir welding (FSW) was applied in this research work to join 6 mm thick dissimilar aluminum alloys AA5083-H111 and AA6351-T6. The effect of tool rotational speed and pin profile on the microstructure and tensile strength of the joints were studied. Dissimilar joints were made using three different tool rotational speeds of 600 rpm, 950 rpm and 1300 rpm and five different tool pin profiles of straight square (SS), straight hexagon (SH), straight octagon (SO), tapered square (TS), and tapered octagon (TO). Three different regions namely unmixed region, mechanically mixed region and mixed flow region were observed in the weld zone. The tool rotational speed and pin profile considerably influenced the microstructure and tensile strength of the joints. The joint which was fabricated using tool rotational speed of 950 rpm and straight square pin profile yielded highest tensile strength of 273 MPa. The two process parameters affected the joint strength due to variations in material flow behavior, loss of cold work in the HAZ of AA5083 side, dissolution and over aging of precipitates of AA6351 side and formation of macroscopic defects in the weld zone.  相似文献

In the present study, the joining of interstitial free steel and commercial pure aluminium was carried out by friction stir welding (FSW) technique using tool rotational speeds of 600, 900, 1200 rpm and traverse speed of 100 mm/min. The microstructure and micro-hardness of the weld interface have been investigated. Optical microscopy was used to characterize the microstructures of different regions of friction stir welding joints. The scanning electron microscopy-back scattered electron (SEM-BSE) images show the existence of the different reaction layers in the welded zone. The Al3Fe intermetallic compound has been observed in the weld interface and their thickness increase with the increase in tool rotational speed. Tensile strength was also evaluated and maximum tensile strength of ∼123.2 MPa along with ∼4.5% elongation at fracture of the joint have been obtained when processed at 600 rpm tool rotational speed.  相似文献

In this study, AA 6013 aluminum plates were butt‐welded with friction stir welding via pin offset technique. Macrostructural observations revealed that kissing bonds, originated from the broken oxide layers, were found to occur in the welded joints. The fracture location of welded joints after tensile tests was found to be outside the joint area, revealing that kissing bonds which were formed in the stir zone exhibited no detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of joints. Microstructural observations revealed that phases belonging to Mg2Si, Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 and Al(MnFe)Si were observed in the x‐ray diffraction pattern of friction stir welded joints. The highest tensile strength with a value of 206 MPa was achieved with the process parameters of 1.5 mm pin offset towards the advancing side and 500 min?1 tool rotational speed, leading the ratio of tensile strength of joint to ultimate tensile strength of base metal, also known as joint efficiency, to reach 74 %.  相似文献

In this study, the friction stir butt welding of 2-mm-thick high nitrogen-containing stainless steel (HNS; Ni-free austenitic stainless steel containing 1 mass% nitrogen) plates was performed using a load-controlled friction stir welding (FSW) machine with a Si3N4-based tool at various welding speeds, i.e., 50 mm/min, 100 mm/min, 200 mm/min and 300 mm/min, and a constant tool rotating speed of 400 rpm. To determine the optimum welding conditions to create reliable HNS FSW joints, the effect of the heat input on the mechanical properties of the HNS FSW joints was studied. The mechanical properties were evaluated by the Vickers hardness test and the tensile strength test. Full-penetrated and defect-free butt welded joints were successfully produced, under all the applied welding conditions. The stir zones consisted of very fine grained structures and showed an increase in the Vickers hardness. These joints also showed a higher tensile strength and yield strength than the base metal. In particular, the FSW welds obtained at a welding speed of 100 mm/min, which showed the best mechanical properties, had a relatively higher Vickers hardness, which indicates a good relationship between the welding parameter (heat input) and the hardness profile due to the microstructure refinements. It was estimated that these welding conditions were optimal, and under these conditions both grain growth and α-phase formation were prevented.  相似文献

A high strength Al–Zn–Mg alloy AA7039 was friction stir welded by varying welding and rotary speed of the tool in order to investigate the effect of varying welding parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties. The friction stir welding (FSW) process parameters have great influence on heat input per unit length of weld, hence on temperature profile which in turn governs the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints. There exits an optimum combination of welding and rotary speed to produce a sound and defect free joint with microstructure that yields maximum mechanical properties. The mechanical properties increase with decreasing welding speed/ increasing rotary speed i.e. with increasing heat input per unit length of welded joint. The high heat input joints fractured from heat affected zone (HAZ) adjacent to thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) on advancing side while low heat input joints fractured from weld nugget along zigzag line on advancing side.  相似文献

目的 为了适应空间曲面构件的搅拌摩擦焊,开展6061铝合金无倾角搅拌摩擦焊工艺及性能的研究。方法 采用无倾角搅拌摩擦焊用的搅拌头,对5 mm厚6061-T6铝合金板材进行试验,研究焊缝成形及接头力学性能,并分析接头组织特征。结果 零倾角搅拌摩擦焊接头从组织上可区分为5个不同区域:焊核区(WNZ)、热力影响区(TMAZ)、热影响区(HAZ)、轴肩影响区(SAZ)和母材(BM);随着搅拌头转速增加,焊缝宽度和焊核尺寸均先变大后变小;随焊接速度增加,焊缝宽度和焊核尺寸均逐渐变小;当焊接速度固定时,随搅拌头转速增加,接头拉伸强度先增加后减小;当搅拌头转速固定时,随焊接速度增加,接头拉伸强度逐渐增大。结论 采用无倾角搅拌摩擦焊接方法,能够实现对5 mm厚6061-T6铝合金板材的有效焊接。  相似文献

The present study focused on the relationship between primary friction stir welding process parameters and varied types of weld-defect discovered in aluminum 2219-T6 friction stir butt-welds of thick plates, meanwhile, the weld-defect forming mechanisms were investigated. Besides a series of optical metallographic examinations for friction stir butt welds, multiple non-destructive testing methods including X-ray detection, ultrasonic C-scan testing, ultrasonic phased array inspection and fluorescent penetrating fluid inspection were successfully used aiming to examine the shapes and existence locations of different weld-defects. In addition, precipitated Al2Cu phase coarsening particles were found around a ‘kissing-bond’ defect within the weld stirred nugget zone by means of scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. On the basis of volume conservation law in material plastic deformation, a simple empirical criterion for estimating the existence of inner material-loss defects was proposed. Defect-free butt joints were obtained after process optimization of friction stir welding for aluminum 2219-T6 plates in 17–20 mm thickness. Process experiments proved that besides of tool rotation speed and travel speed, more other appropriate process parameter variables played important roles at the formation of high-quality friction stir welds, such as tool-shoulder target depth, spindle tilt angle, and fixture clamping conditions on the work-pieces. Furthermore, the nonlinear correlation between weld tensile strengths and weld crack-like root-flaws of different lengths was briefly investigated.  相似文献

The effects of advancing speed and rotational speed on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of friction stir welded 7075‐T6 aluminium alloy sheets were studied. The fatigue strength of sound joints was measured and compared to tensile testing results. Macrographs and microhardness maps were carried out to reveal the microstructure transformations. Fractographic observations were made to identify the failure mechanisms. The effects of welding parameters on the fatigue strength are discussed in terms of welding pitch k (mm/rev) and heat input (J/mm). At a high welding pitch, crack initiation at the root of the circular grooves left by the tool on the weld surface is the most detrimental failure mechanism. As the size and the depth of the grooves are related to the welding pitch, the fatigue strength increases when the welding pitch is reduced. However, when the heat input is excessive, the failure is caused by sub‐surface defects produced after abnormal stirring and/or by softening of the heat‐affected zone. Lateral lips on the weld surface edges also have an effect on the fatigue strength for intermediate welding pitch values.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of post‐weld heat treatment on modification of microstructures and mechanical properties of friction stir welded and gas metal arc welded AA6061‐O plates were compared with each other. Gas metal arc welding and friction stir welding were used as the applicable welding processes for AA6061‐O alloys. The applied post‐weld heat treatment consisted of solution heat treatment, followed by water quenching and finally artificial aging. The samples were classified as post‐weld heat treated and as‐welded joints. The microstructural evolution, tensile properties, hardness features and fracture surfaces of both as‐welded and post‐weld heat treated samples were reported. The results clearly showed that friction stir welding process demonstrated better and more consistent mechanical properties by comparison with the gas metal arc welding process. The weld region of as‐welded samples exhibited a higher hardness value of 80 HV0.1 compared to the base material. In addition, the feasibility of post‐weld heat treatment in order to enhance the mechanical properties and to obtain more homogeneous microstructure of 6061‐O aluminum alloys was evaluated.  相似文献

Present work describes friction stir welding of in-house produced and hot rolled Al–4.5%Cu/TiC in situ metal matrix composites by using hardened bimetallic tool with varying shoulder surface geometries and other process variables. Joining of the said composite using friction stir welding process has been seen to provide beneficial effects such as grain refinement of the matrix and subsequent redistribution and refinement of reinforcements. A predictive model has also been developed to estimate the weld properties such as tensile strength and ductility with respect to the tool geometry used and input process variables. The X-ray diffraction analysis results of Al–4.5%Cu/TiC butt welds indicated formation of CuAl2O4 and CuAl2 to some extent in the stir zone. Fractography of the weld samples revealed dimpled ductile nature of fracture. Through multi response optimization of the welding parameters and tool geometry, weld strength of 89% that of the base material was achieved.  相似文献

Dissimilar friction stir welding between magnesium and aluminum alloy plates with thicknesses of 2 mm was performed. The tool for welding was rotated at speeds ranging from 800 to 1600 rpm under a constant traverse speed of 300 mm/min. For tool rotation speeds of 1000, 1200, and 1400 rpm, defect-free welds were successfully obtained and the surface morphology of the welds became smoother as the tool rotation speed was increased. The relatively simple bonded interface was clearly evident and had a zigzag pattern. A mixed microstructure of magnesium and aluminum alloys was formed near the bonded interface. The maximum tensile strength of about 132 MPa was obtained at the tool rotation speed of 1000 rpm. However, there were not noteworthy changes in the tensile strength as a function of the tool rotation speed. The elongation was 2% or less, regardless of the tool rotation speed.  相似文献

In this study, the fatigue behaviour of spot friction welded joints of Al 5083‐O was investigated using experimental and numerical approaches. In the experimental part, a single cover butt joint of aluminium sheets with a thickness of 2 mm was fatigue tested under constant amplitude cyclic loadings. The sheets were connected using a spot friction welding technique with constant welding parameters of tool rotational speed, holding time, travelling speed, and shoulder plunge depth. Fatigue cracks were initiated in the vicinity of the weld notch and then propagated along the circumference of the weld's nugget. In the numerical part, a three‐dimensional finite element model was developed to determine stress and strain distributions in the spot friction welded joint and to predict the fatigue life using three approaches of Morrow, modified Morrow, and Smith–Watson–Topper. The results showed a good agreement between the fatigue life predictions and experimental data.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of main friction stir welding (FSW) parameters on the quality of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plate welds. Welds were carried out in a FSW machine, using a tool with a stationary shoulder and no external heating system. The welding parameters studied were the tool rotational speed which varied between 1000 and 1500 (rpm); the traverse speed which varied between 50 and 200 (mm/min), and the axial force ranging from 0.75 to 4 (kN). The major novelty is to study the influence of the parameter axial force on FSW of polymers. Produced welds have always a tensile strength below the base material, reaching the maximum efficiencies of above 60 (%) for welds made with higher rotational speed and axial force. Good quality welds are achieved without using external heating, when the tool rotational speed and axial force are above a certain threshold. Above that threshold the formation of cavities and porosity in the retreating side of the stir zone is avoided and the weld region is very uniform and smooth. For low rotational speed and axial force welds have poor material mixing at the retreating side and voids at the nugget. For this reason the strain at break of these welded plates is low when compared with that of base material.  相似文献
