The advantages of using ionising irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment have been demonstrated commercially in the past two decades and several countries currently use the technology for commercial treatments to meet plant quarantine requirements. Although many countries have expressed interest in using phytosanitary irradiation (PI) and it provides a viable alternative for overcoming a wide range of phytosanitary restrictions for numerous fresh products, the use of PI for fresh fruits and vegetables faces economic obstacles due to the sizeable initial investment required to build an irradiation facility. Projecting the market demand for irradiated products to justify the investment in treatment facilities is a business challenge limited by the potential for all countries to invest in this technology, especially developing countries. A recent change in import regulations by the United States allows for treatment upon entry, thus removing the immediate need for treatment facilities in the exporting country. This change makes it possible for exporting countries to explore and develop new markets prior to investing in treatment facilities at the origin. This paper discusses the economic potential of products that could be shipped to the United States for irradiation from selected countries in the Americas, Asia and Africa.  相似文献

Many authors suggest that market forces are inadequate to successfully manage the problems of resource availability and use. The fundamental question is whether these inadequacies are intrinsic to the market or if they arise from a failure of firms to detect and respond to subtle market signals. This paper explores the latter by describing (1) mechanisms that can limit materials availability, (2) effects of such limits on the firm, (3) preliminary metrics to diagnose these risks, and (4) strategies to reduce a firm's risk exposure. Case analyses of two materials systems are used to suggestthat private firm interests, when properly informed, can motivate strategies that drive toward sustainable materials use. These strategies include (1) improving production efficiency, (2) developing technology to use more sustainable substitute materials, and (3) facilitating a more effective materials recycling infrastructure.  相似文献

As noted by Garber, Hyatt, and Starr (2002), favorable sensory and taste ratings do not directly translate into the purchase, consumption, or market success of a product. Indeed, there is often a sizable gap between such tests and market success. Segmentation differences, consumer suggestibility, and measurement relevance all limit the value of sensory tests to brand managers and marketers. These limitations unfortunately compromise the value that sensory researchers could have to a firm and to a product's ultimate market success. Yet there is no reason sensory measurement methods and analysis can not be modified to more directly help predict the factors that will influence the purchase, consumption, and market success of a product.  相似文献

Summary Wara serves as an important protein source for people in West Africa. The ten most frequently isolated lactic acid bacteria from abomasum-soured milk samples were screened singly or in combinations as starter organisms for the production of wara . The screening was based on the bacteria's ability to produce lactic acid, diacetyl, β-galactosidase and an average weighted firm curd at 30 °C (6 h, 72 h). With lactic acid concentration of 10.0 g l−1, β-galactosidase of 25.2 U mL−1 and a firm curd weight of 16.0 g l−1 milk at 30 °C, pH 5.1 after 6 h, a single-organism starter culture of Lactococcus lactis was chosen as the best suited. Compared with the commercial market samples, wara produced by this starter culture showed a 54% increase in percentage protein, 17.9% increase in ash, 23.6% increase in iron and a 150% increase in vitamin A content. Statistical analysis of sensory evaluation results showed a preference for the market sample only in terms of appearance and texture, while the starter-produced wara matched the market sample in terms of flavour and palatability. Treatment with 3% brine reduced microbial counts although dipping in 5% NaCl-in-whey gave better results in terms of the total viable count of mesophiles, psychrotrophs and coliforms compared with the untreated sample.  相似文献

Abstract

Eels, despite their snakelike appearance, are true fish, possessing gills and very small scales. They are bottom dwelling, nocturnal in habit, and feed on invertebrates and small finfish. Eels have a peculiar life history, spending most of their life in fresh or brackish water but returning to sea to spawn. Currently, a small number of fishermen harvest eels, sold to local smokers, with smaller eels marketed locally as bait. The meat is 18.0% protein and 17.0% fat. Eel meat has a very firm texture, a high fat content, and a full flavor. Delicatessen specialties made from hot smoked eel meat such as canned jellied eel are in great demand. The need to explore the potential for underutilized species is particularly pressing. By focusing on underutilized species and robust and effective processing methods, it should be possible to create many new products and reach new markets. Eels are a vast untapped resource deserving serious consideration for establishing a domestic and a global market.  相似文献
