A controlled impinging jet is a promising tool for various heat/mass transfer applications, such as drying technologies or cooling of highly loaded electronic devices or gas turbine blades. An axisymmetric air jet was excited using a system of four synthetic jets distributed around the circumference of the primary nozzle. First, the control synthetic jets were measured alone. After an adjustment, the primary axisymmetric jet was excited to the helical or bifurcating modes, and its behavior was studied experimentally including an impingement effect to the wall. For comparison purposes, a reference steady (unforced) jet from the same nozzle was also measured. The flow visualization, hot-wire anemometry, PIV, and naphthalene sublimation techniques were used. The main purpose was to investigate the influence of the actuation on the impingement heat transfer at the Reynolds numbers 1600 and 5000.The effects of the Strouhal number and nozzle-to-wall spacing on a distribution of the local heat transfer were evaluated. The most significant effects were found at the Strouhal numbers 0.14–0.32 at the ratio of the control to primary jet momentum rates only 0.24–2.4%. Under small nozzle-to-wall spacing H/D = 2, the excitation led to heat transfer increase in the stagnation area – the most prominent enhancement 40% was found at the stagnation point. Under moderate nozzle-to-wall spacing H/D = 6, the excitation made more uniform the Nusselt number distribution by means of a substantial reduction of the stagnation heat transfer rate.  相似文献

Flow and heat transfer characteristics of swirling impinging jet (SIJ) were studied experimentally at constant nozzle-to-plate distance of L = 4D. The swirling jet is generated by inserting twisted tapes within a pipe nozzle. Effects of swirl on the impinged surface are investigated at twist ratios (y/W) of ∞ (straight tape), 3.64, 2.27, 1.82, and 1.52. The flow patterns of the free swirling jet and the swirling impinging jet were visualized by mixing dye with the jet flow. Distributions of temperature and convective heat transfer coefficient on the impinged surface were measured with thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) sheet and image processing technique. Additionally, an oil film technique was performed as a complementary technique for flow visualization on the impinged surface. The experimental results reveal that there appear to be two peaks of heat transfer in the jet impingement region. The heat transfer enhancements in jet impingement region can be achieved at a low twist ratio of 3.64 which corresponds to the swirl number of 0.4.  相似文献

The present work is concerned with exploring the potential of refractive index-based imaging techniques for investigating the heat transfer characteristics of impinging turbulent synthetic jets. The line-of-sight images of the convective field have been recorded using a Mach Zehnder interferometer. Heat transfer experiments have been conducted in infinite fringe setting mode of the interferometer with air as the working fluid. The effect of the excitation frequency of the synthetic jet on the resultant temperature distribution and local heat transfer characteristics has been studied. The fringe patterns recorded in the form of interferograms have first been qualitatively discussed and thereafter, quantitatively analyzed to determine the two-dimensional temperature field. Local heat transfer coefficients along the width of the heated copper block have been determined from the temperature field distribution thus obtained from the interferograms. The results have been presented in the form of interferometric images recorded as a function of frequency of the synthetic jet, corresponding two-dimensional temperature distributions and local variation of heat transfer coefficients. Interferometric measurements predicted maxima of the heat transfer coefficient at the resonance frequency of the synthetic jet and at a jet-to-plate surface spacing (z/d) of 3. These observations correlate well with the thermocouple-based measurements of temperature and heat transfer coefficient performed simultaneously during the experiments. The interferometry-based study, as reported in the present work for the first time in the context of synthetic jets, highlights the importance of refractive index-based imaging techniques as a potential tool for understanding the local heat transfer characteristics of synthetic jets.  相似文献

Whereas the heat transfer mechanisms in steady impinging jets are well understood, the available knowledge of heat transfer to impinging synthetic jets remains inconsistent. This paper provides an objective comparison of the stagnation point heat transfer performance of axisymmetric impinging synthetic jets versus established steady jet correlations. Furthermore, a general correlation for the stagnation point Nusselt number is proposed including the effect of all appropriate scaling parameters: Reynolds number (500 ? Re ? 1500), jet-to-surface spacing (2 ? H/D ? 16) and stroke length (2 ? L0/D ? 40). Based on the ratio of stroke length to jet-to-surface spacing L0/H, four heat transfer regimes are identified.  相似文献

This paper reports on detailed measurements of the turbulent flow in the stagnation region of a single impinging jet issuing from a round pipe with diameter D and a length of 76D. The distance between the pipe exit and the flat impingement plate is 2D, and the Reynolds number (based on the bulk velocity and pipe diameter) is 2.3 × 104. Mean velocity components and Reynolds stresses were determined by using a two-component LDA. A modified one-component LDA was used to perform near-wall measurements with minimum wall distances of approximately 40 μm. PIV measurements were taken in a small field of view (approximately 4 × 5 mm2) to study instantaneous reversals in the near wall region.  相似文献

An experimental study on heat transfer and fluid flow has been carried out for a swirling round impinging jet. A thermosensitive liquid crystal sheet was used for the heat transfer measurements and the three velocity components were measured with LDV in the stagnation region for cases where the Swirl number Sw = 0.0, 0.22, and 0.45 at the Reynolds number Re = 8100. The formation of recirculation flow due to a swirl near the impinging wall was found to deteriorate the heat transfer coefficient in the stagnation region and results in a more uniform distribution of the Nusselt number with an increasing Swirl number. The heat transfer mechanism of the swirling impinging jet is discussed based on the flow characteristics of the mean velocities and turbulence quantities. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An experimental and numerical study is conducted to investigate turbulent slot jet impingement cooling characteristics on concave plates with varying surface curvature. Air is used as the impingement coolant. In the experimental work, a slot nozzle specially designed with a sixth degree polynomial in order to provide a uniform exit velocity profile was used. The experiments were carried out for the jet Reynolds numbers in the range of 3423  Re  9485, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance range of 1  H/W  14 for dimensionless values of the curvature of impinging surfaces in the range of R/L = 0.5, 0.725, and 1.3 and a flat impingement surface. Constant heat flux was applied on the plates. Numerical computations were performed using the k-ε turbulence model with enhanced wall functions. For the ranges of the governing parameters studied, the stagnation, and local and average Nusselt numbers have been obtained both experimentally and numerically. The numerical results showed a reasonable agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

This study investigates hydrodynamic characteristics of a slot jet flow impinging on a concave surface experimentally and numerically. Six different concave plates with varying surface curvature and a flat plate are used. Air is used as the impinging coolant. In the experimental work, the slot nozzle used was specially designed with a sixth degree polynomial in order to provide a uniform velocity profile at its exit. The experiments were carried out for the jet Reynolds numbers in the range of 3000 < Re < 12500, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance range of 1 ≤ H/W ≤ 14 for dimensionless value of the curvature of impinging surfaces in the range of R/L = 0.5, 0.5125, 0.566, 0.725, and 1.3. The pressure coefficient, Cp, for each test case was obtained across dimensionless arc length, s/W. Numerical computations were performed by using the k-ε turbulence model with enhanced wall functions for the concave plate with R/L = 0.725 and for the flat plate. The numerical results showed a reasonable agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

The flow field in a fuel cell is expected to distribute the reactants as uniformly as possible over the active plate, support the reasonable pressure drop across the channel and maximize the mass transfer through the catalyst layers. To simultaneously accomplish these requirements, an innovative multiple impingement jet flow field (MIJFF) is proposed in this study. A three-dimensional thermo-fluid simulation is used to evaluate the proposed idea and compare its performance against the commonly used parallel field flow (PFF). The domain of calculations includes a channel with multiple impingement jets linked to a porous gas diffusion layer under low Reynolds flow conditions. The results reveal that the suggested MIJFF design significantly increases the transport of the reactant gases through the catalyst layer. The penetration depth into the catalyst layer in the MIJFF arrangement is higher than that of the PFF setup and the use of the catalyst layer is optimized, which in turn can lead to a reduction of the activation drop. Compared to a PFF design under similar operating conditions, the mean Nusselt number is shown to increase by a factor of about 3.5 in the MIJFF setup. Furthermore, the temperature is more uniformly distributed in the MIJFF pattern which results in more effective distribution of the reactant gases over the active surface. The current study shows that under equal pressure drop conditions, the MIJFF exhibits a much higher performance than a PFF channel design. That is while the corresponding flow rate for the MIJFF is much lower than that of PFF.  相似文献

The hydrodynamics of jet impingement quenching of a stainless steel specimen has been studied experimentally. The specimen is heated to an initial temperature of about 900 °C and then quenched by a subcooled free-surface water jet. High-speed imaging shows that the free-surface of the water film in the wetted region is smooth. The water film outside the wetted region is deflected away from the surface and then breaks into droplets due to surface tension and shear forces. The splashed droplet velocity is found to be low up to a wetting front radius of 6 mm (r/dJ  2), beyond which it increases rapidly before reaching a constant value at a wetting front radius of about 8 to 10 mm (2.67 ? r/dJ ? 3.34). The water film velocity at the wetting front is calculated using the single-phase boundary layer model suggested by Watson [2]. At moderate subcooling, the splashed droplet velocity up to a wetting front radius of 10 mm (r/dJ  3.34) is found to be much lower than the estimated single-phase film velocity. The study shows that although the wetted region may appear devoid of any bubbles, strong two-phase flow occurs within this region.  相似文献

Compared with single-phase laminar pipe flow, two-phase bubble-train flow shows a significantly increased rate of mass transfer between liquid and wall. The present work is a study of this effect over a wide range of the governing variables. The problem has been numerically simulated and experimentally examined using the copper dissolution method. Furthermore, a mathematical correlation for the Sherwood-number of the system is presented and the mechanism of transport enhancement is elucidated.  相似文献

Classic and high speed particle image velocimetry and infrared thermography are used to investigate the behavior of a round jet impinging on a flat plate for a Reynolds number 28,000, for orifice-to-plate distances of 3 or 5 nozzle diameters and for two different nozzles, a contraction and a long tube. The contraction nozzle reveals a different heat transfer distribution on the impinging plate compared to the long tube case. The jet can be excited by a loudspeaker at Strouhal numbers 0.26, 0.51 and 0.79. This acoustic forcing changes the jet structure, modifying annular vortex rings in the shear layer of the jet and increasing the turbulent values. The heat transfer is therefore modified, resulting in an increase of the Nusselt number near the jet axis and an alleviation or a shift of the secondary peak.  相似文献

When the underexpanded supersonic jet impinges on the obstacle, it is well known that the self-induced flow oscillation occurs at the specific condition of the pressure ratio in the flowfield, the position of an obstacle and so on. This oscillation is related with the noise problems of aeronautical and other industrial engineering so that the characteristic and the mechanism of self-induced flow oscillation have to be cleared to control the various noise problems. But, it seems that the characteristics of t...  相似文献

A numerical investigation has been performed to study the effect of flow pulsations on time-averaged Nusselt number under a laminar impinging jet. The parameters considered are as follows: time-averaged jet Reynolds number (100 ≤ Re ≤ 1000), frequency of pulsation (1 ≤ f ≤ 20 Hz), and nozzle-to-target spacing (4 ≤ H/d ≤ 9). The combination of Re = 300, f = 5 Hz and H/d = 9 was found to give the best heat transfer performance. Interestingly, it was found that the onset of separation at the wall jet region of pulsating impinging jet is associated with the point of constant Nusselt number during the oscillation cycle. Downstream of the separation point in the wall jet region, the Nusselt number waveform fluctuates out of phase with the inlet velocity. Within one oscillation, large vortices existing during the minimum velocity state are broken into two smaller vortices when the flow is accelerated to reach the maximum velocity, after which the two vortices merge again when the flow decelerates back to the minimum velocity.  相似文献

The present work investigates the applicability of scaling log-laws to the turbulent impinging jet. Both, the velocity and the temperature fields are studied under this assumption. To validate the proposed expressions, a detailed experimental program was carried out based on thermal anemometry. The experiments were conducted for one nozzle-to-plate spacing (H/D = 2.0) and Reynolds number of 35,000. A constant wall heat flux condition was achieved by conducting electricity through thin resistors that were placed beneath an aluminum disk. Measurements of local velocity and of temperature distributions are presented as well as longitudinal turbulence profiles. The mean temperature profiles were measured through thermocouples.  相似文献

Heat transfer and flow visualization experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of swirling and multi‐channel impinging jets and compare the results with those of a multi‐channel impinging jet (MCIJ) and conventional impinging jet (CIJ) for the present work at the same conditions. Swirling impinging jets (SIJs) employed the fixed blade lengths of 12.3 mm with four blades at the exit of the housing tube to divert the air flow through four narrow channels with a desired swirl angle (θ of 22.5, 41 and 50°). The MCIJ jet had the same dimensions as the SIJs, except that the narrow channels in the solid insert were vertical (θ=0°). The local and surface average Nusselt numbers of MCIJ were generally higher than those of the CIJ and SIJs. The SIJs, however, demonstrated significant improvement in radial uniformity of heat transfer compared to the MCIJ and CIJ. In the region of 2.7?X/D?0 for H/D=8 and Re=20 000, the average Nusselt number for the MCIJ was 11, 33, 72 and 98 per cent higher than that of the CIJ, θ=22.5, θ=41 and θ=50°, respectively. Numerical study of the effect of confinement on a flow structure and heat transfer in an impinging mist jets with low mass fraction of droplets (ML1 ? 1%) were presented. The turbulent mist jet is issued from a pipe and strikes into the center of the flat heated plate. Mathematical model is based on the steady-state RANS equations for the two-phase flow in Euler/Euler approach. Predictions were performed for the distances between the nozzle and the target plate x/(2R) = 0.5–10 and the initial droplets size (d1 = 5–100 μm) at the varied Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter, Re = (1.3–8) × 104. Addition of droplets causes significant increase of heat transfer intensity in the vicinity of the jet stagnation point compared with the one-phase air impinging jet. The presence of the confinement upper surface decreases the wall friction and heat transfer rate, but the change of friction and heat transfer coefficients in the stagnation point is insignificant. The effect of confinement on the heat transfer is observed only in very small nozzle-to-plate distances (H/(2R) < 0.5) both in single-phase and mist impinging jets.  相似文献

The detailed numerical simulation has been carried out to investigate the effect of synthetic jet excitation on the secondary flow at 5° incidence in a compressor cascade, in which the synthetic jet actuation is equipped on the suction surface. The influence of excitation position, one fixed near the trailing edge and the other fixed a little far from the trailing edge, has also been studied. The results show that unsteady disturbance of desirable synthetic jet effectively enhances the mixing of the fluid inside the separation region, which reduces the vortex intensity and the energy loss, improves the flow status in the cascade, and also suppresses velocity fluctuation near the trailing edge. Additionally, the actuation fixed near the separation region proves to be more effective and exit load distribution is more uniform due to the employment of the synthetic jet.  相似文献

Impinging flame jets are widely used in applications where high heat-transfer rates are needed, for instance in the glass industry. During the heating process of glass products, internal thermal stresses develop in the material due to temperature gradients. In order to avoid excessive thermal gradients as well as overheating of the hot spots, it is important to know and control the temperature distribution inside a heated glass product. Therefore, it is advantageous to know the relation describing the convective heat–flux distribution at the heated side of a glass product. In a previous work, we presented a heat–flux relation applicable for the hot spot of the target [M.J. Remie, G. Särner, M.F.G. Cremers, A. Omrane, K.R.A.M. Schreel, M. Aldén, L.P.H. de Goey, Extended heat-transfer relation for an impinging laminar flame jet to a flat plate, Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer, in press]. In this paper, we present an extension of this relation, which is applicable for larger radial distances from the hot spot.  相似文献
