ABSTRACT

A series of experiments on CO2 hydrate formation were carried out in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO2), silicon dioxide (SiO2), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanoparticles. The effects of these nanoparticles on induction time, final gas consumption, and gas storage capacity have been investigated at the temperature of 274.15 K and the initial pressure of 5.0 MPa.g. The induction time of CO2 hydrate formation was remarkably shortened to 12.5 min in the presence of 0.005 wt% MWNTs nanoparticles. The high thermal conductivity and heat capacity of MWNTs nanoparticles presented better heat transfer, and large surface area provided more suitable sites for heterogeneous nucleation of CO2 hydrate.  相似文献

Hydrate-based desalination could be a promising technique for producing fresh water from saline water, as it is an eco-friendly process and suitable for large-scale implementation. To make the hydrate-based desalination technology easily scalable, we looked at using air (or N2) or CO2 as a hydrate former, along with cyclopentane (CP). Hydrate former CP helps to reduce the operating conditions, as CP forms hydrate at ambient pressure. However, hydrate formation kinetics due to water-insoluble CP is slow. In this work, the kinetics of hydrate formation in saline water were investigated and compared to identify the utility of CO2 and N2 as hydrate formers for desalination work. The addition of CP as a hydrate former should transform the structure of CO2 hydrate from structure I (sI) to structure II (sII), as CP occupies the large cages (51264) in the gas hydrate. A set of three similar reactors were used for this study to collect data quickly. Furthermore, the triple reactor setup is a unique reactor design mounted on a shaker, and a set of SS-316 balls present inside the horizontal reactor imparts the mixing. Experiments with the CO2-CP mixture and N2-CP mixture have been studied in the presence or absence of 3 wt.% NaCl at 274 K and 3 MPa pressure. The gas uptake kinetics, water recovery, and separation efficiency have been investigated.  相似文献

Large amounts of CH4 are stored as hydrates on continental margins and permafrost regions. If the CH4 hydrates could be converted into CO2 hydrate, they would serve double duty as CH4 sources and CO2 storage sites in the deep ocean sediments. As preliminary investigations, both the phase behavior of CH4 hydrates and kinetic behavior of CO2 hydrate were measured at versatile conditions that can simulate actual marine sediments. When measuring three-phase equilibria (H-LW-V) containing CH4 hydrate, we also closely examined pore and electrolyte effects of clay and NaCl on hydrate formation. These two effects inhibited hydrate nucleation and thus made the hydrate equilibrium line shift to a higher pressure region. In addition, the kinetic data of CO2 hydrate in the mixtures containing clay and NaCl were determined at 2.0 MPa and 274.15 K. Clay mineral accelerated an initial formation rate of CO2 hydrate by inducing nucleation as initiator, but total amount of formed CO2, of course, decreased due to the capillary effect of clay pores. Also, the addition of NaCl in sample mixtures made both initial formation rate and total amount of CO2 consumption decrease.  相似文献

An analysis of the literature data on the solubility and kinetics of the chemical (reagent) precipitation of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide is performed. The possible causes of the significant discrepancy in the available data are considered. The kinetics of the homogeneous and heterogeneous crystallization of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide in reagent precipitation is studied using different methods. It is shown that the use of heterogeneous crystallization on seed particles pretreated in an ultrasonic field raises the rate of crystallization by an order of magnitude. The kinetics of nucleation is studied; the effect of supersaturation and temperature on the induction period in the homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 crystals is investigated. The energy characteristics of nucleation, namely, the interfacial tension (surface energy) and activation energy, are determined. The use of fine-dispersed particles activated by ultrasound makes it possible to considerably reduce the energy barrier for nucleation.  相似文献

Sub‐seabed geological storage of CO2 in the form of gas hydrate is attractive because clathrate hydrate stably exists at low temperature and high pressure, even if a fault occurs by diastrophism like a big earthquake. For the effective design of the storage system it is necessary to model the formation of CO2‐hydrate. Here, it is assumed that the formation of gas hydrate on the interface between gas and water consists of two stages: gas diffusion through the CO2‐hydrate film and consequent CO2‐hydrate formation on the interface, between film and water. Also proposed is the presence of a fresh reaction interface, which is part of the interface between the gas and aqueous phases and not covered with CO2‐hydrate. Parameters necessary to model the hydrate formation in sand sediment are derived by comparing the results of the present numerical simulations and the measurements in the literature.  相似文献

Gas hydrates from CO2/N2 and CO2/H2 gas mixtures were formed in a semi-batch stirred vessel at constant pressure and temperature of 273.7 K. These mixtures are of interest to CO2 separation and recovery from flue gas and fuel gas, respectively. During hydrate formation the gas uptake was determined and the composition changes in the gas phase were obtained by gas chromatography. The rate of hydrate growth from CO2/H2 mixtures was found to be the fastest. In both mixtures CO2 was found to be preferentially incorporated into the hydrate phase. The observed fractionation effect is desirable and provides the basis for CO2 capture from flue gas or fuel gas mixtures. The separation from fuel gas is also a source of H2. The impact of tetrahydrofuran (THF) on hydrate formation from the CO2/N2 mixture was also observed. THF is known to substantially reduce the equilibrium formation conditions enabling hydrate formation at much lower pressures. THF was found to reduce the induction time and the rate of hydrate growth.  相似文献

Hydrate additives can be used to mitigate hydrate formation conditions, promote hydrate growth rate and improve separation efficiency. CO2 + N2 and CO2 + CH4 systems with presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or tetrahydrofuran (THF) are studied to analyze the effect of hydrate additives on gas separation performance. The experiment results show that CO2 can be selectively enriched in the hydrate phase. SDS can speed up the hydrate growth rate by facilitating gas molecules solubilization. When SDS concentration increases, split and loss fraction increase initially and then decrease slightly, resulting in a decreased separation factor. The optimum concentration of SDS exists at the range of 100–300 ppm. As THF can be easily encaged in hydrate cavities, hydrate formation condition can be mitigated greatly with its existence. Additionally, THF can also strengthen hydrate formation. The THF effect on separation performance is related to feed gas components. CO2 occupies the small cavities of type II hydrate prior to N2. But the competitiveness of CO2 and CH4 to occupy cavities are quite fair. The variations of split fraction, loss fraction and separation factor depend on the concentration of THF added. The work in this paper has a positive role in flue gas CO2 capture and natural gas de-acidification.  相似文献

The paper takes into consideration a new approach for CO2 capture and transport, based on the formation of solid CO2 hydrates.Carbon dioxide sequestration from power plants can take advantage of the properties of gas hydrates. The formation and decomposition of hydrates from various N2-CO2 mixtures has been studied experimentally in a 2 l reactor, to determine the CO2 separation in terms of hydrate composition and residual CO2 content in the reacted gas.Carbon dioxide acts as a co-former for the production of hydrates containing nitrogen, besides CO2. The mixed hydrates that are obtained are less stable than simple CO2 hydrates. When CO2 content in the flue gas is higher than 30% by volume, the hydrates formed at 5 MPa are sufficiently concentrated (about 70% CO2) and carbon dioxide reduction in the reacted gas is acceptable. The application of a process based on hydrate formation could be especially interesting (for CO2 capture and transport) when connected to an oxy-coal combustion process; in this case the CO2 content in the flue gas is very high and the hydrate formation is greatly facilitated.  相似文献

In the current work, molecular dynamics simulation is employed to understand the intrinsic growth of carbon dioxide and methane hydrate starting from a seed crystal of methane and carbon dioxide respectively. This comparison was carried out because it has relevance to the recovery of methane gas from natural gas hydrate reservoirs by simultaneously sequestering a greenhouse gas like CO2. The seed crystal of carbon dioxide and methane hydrate was allowed to grow from a super-saturated mixture of carbon dioxide or methane molecules in water respectively. Two different concentrations (1:6 and 1:8.5) of CO2/CH4 molecules per water molecule were chosen based on gas–water composition in hydrate phase. The molecular level growth as a function of time was investigated by all atomistic molecular dynamics simulation under suitable temperature and pressure range which was well above the hydrate stability zone to ensure significantly faster growth kinetics. The concentration of CO2 molecules in water played a significant role in growth kinetics, and it was observed that maximizing the CO2 concentration in the aqueous phase may not result in faster growth of CO2 hydrate. On the contrary, methane hydrate growth was independent of methane molecule concentration in the aqueous phase. We have validated our results by performing experimental work on carbon dioxide hydrate where it was seen that under conditions appropriate for liquid CO2, the growth for carbon dioxide hydrate was very slow in the beginning.  相似文献

This paper investigates an original method to efficiently trigger gas hydrate crystallization. This method consists of an in situ injection of a small amount of THF into an aqueous phase in contact with a gas-hydrate-former phase at pressure and temperature conditions inside the hydrate metastable zone. In the presence of a CO2–CH4 gas mixture, our results show that the THF injection induces immediate crystallization of a first hydrate containing THF. This triggers the formation of the CO2–CH4 binary hydrate as proven by the pressure and temperature reached at equilibrium. This experimental method, which “cancels out” the stochasticity of the hydrate crystallization, was used to evaluate the effect of the anionic surfactant SDS at different concentrations, on the formation kinetics of the CO2–CH4 hydrate. The results are discussed and compared with those published in a recent article (Ricaurte et al., 2013), where THF was not injected but present in the aqueous phase from the beginning and at much higher concentrations.  相似文献

The partial replacement of ordinary portland cement (OPC) by fine mineral fillers accelerates the rate of hydration reactions. This acceleration, known as the filler effect, has been attributed to enhanced heterogeneous nucleation of C‐S‐H on the extra surface provided by fillers. This study isolates the cause of the filler effect by examining how the composition and replacement levels of two filler agents influence the hydration of tricalcium silicate (T1‐Ca3SiO5; C3S), a polymorph of the major phase in ordinary portland cement (OPC). For a unit increase in surface area of the filler, C3S reaction rates increase far less than expected. This is because the agglomeration of fine filler particles can render up to 65% of their surface area unavailable for C‐S‐H nucleation. By analysis of mixtures with equal surface areas, it is hypothesized that limestone is a superior filler as compared to quartz due to the sorption of its aqueous CO32? ions by the C‐S‐H—which in turn releases OH? species to increase the driving force for C‐S‐H growth. This hypothesis is supported by kinetic data of C3S hydration occurring in the presence of CO32? and SO42? ions provisioned by readily soluble salts. Contrary to prior investigations, these results suggest that differences in heterogeneous nucleation of the C‐S‐H on filler particle surfaces, caused due to differences in their interfacial properties, have little if any effect on C3S hydration kinetics.  相似文献

Gas hydrate is a nonstoichiometric crystal compound formed from water and gas. Most nonvisual studies on gas hydrate are unable to detect how much water is converted to hydrates, and thus, the hydrate stoichiometry calculations are inaccurate. This study investigated the CO2 hydrate formation process in porous media directly and quantitatively. The characteristics of the time-variable consumption of hydrate formation indicated a two-stage formation, hydrate enclathration and continuous occupancy. The enclathration stage occurred in the first 20 min of the formation when considerable heat is released. The continuous occupancy stage lasted longer than the hydrate enclathration because the empty cages in previously formed hydrates would also be occupied. The higher formation pressures can accelerate water consumption and increase cage occupancy. The compositions of completely formed CO2 hydrates at 2.7, 3.0, and 3.3 MPa and 275.15 K were determined as CO2·6.90H2O, CO2·6.70H2O, and CO2·6.49H2O, respectively.  相似文献

This study is aimed at developing an alkaline/surfactant-enhanced oil recovery process for heavy oil reservoirs with oil viscosities ranging from 1000 to 10,000 mPa s, through the mechanism of interfacial instability. Instead of the oil viscosity being reduced, as in thermal and solvent/gas injection processes, oil is dispersed into and transported through the water phase to production wells.Extensive emulsification tests and oil/water interfacial tension measurements were conducted to screen alkali and surfactant for the oil and the brine samples collected from Brintnell reservoir. The heavy oil/water interfacial tension could be reduced to about 7 × 10−2 dyn/cm with the addition of a mixture of Na2CO3 and NaOH in the formation brine without evident dynamic effect. The oil/water interfacial tension could be further reduced to 1 × 10−2 dyn/cm when a very low surfactant concentration (0.005-0.03 wt%) was applied to the above alkaline solution. Emulsification tests showed that in situ self-dispersion of the heavy oil into the water phase occurred when a carefully designed chemical solution was applied.A series of 21 flood tests were conducted in sandpacks to evaluate the chemical formulas obtained from screening tests for the oil. Tertiary oil recoveries of about 22-23% IOIP (32-35% ROIP) were obtained for the tests using 0.6 wt% alkaline (weight ratio of Na2CO3 to NaOH = 2:1) and 0.045 wt% surfactant solution in the formation brine. The sandpack flood results obtained in this project showed that a synergistic enhancement among the chemicals did occur in the tertiary recovery process through the interfacial instability mechanism.  相似文献

This project is a trial conducted under contract with CO2CRC, Australia of a new CO2 capture technology that can be applied to integrated gasification combined cycle power plants and other industrial gasification facilities. The technology is based on combination of two low temperature processes, namely cryogenic condensation and the formation of hydrates, to remove CO2 from the gas stream. The first stage of this technology is condensation at −55 °C where CO2 concentration is expected to be reduced by up to 75 mol%. Remaining CO2 is captured in the form of solid hydrate at about 1 °C reducing CO2 concentration down to 7 mol% using hydrate promoters. This integrated cryogenic condensation and CO2 hydrate capture technology hold promise for greater reduction of CO2 emissions at lower cost and energy demand. Overall, the process produced gas with a hydrogen content better than 90 mol%. The concentrated CO2 stream was produced with 95-97 mol% purity in liquid form at high pressure and is available for re-use or sequestration. The enhancement of carbon dioxide hydrate formation and separation in the presence of new hydrate promoter is also discussed. A laboratory scale flow system for the continuous production of condensed CO2 and carbon dioxide hydrates is also described and operational details are identified.  相似文献

Gas hydrate/clathrate hydrate formation is an innovative method to trap CO2 into hydrate cages under appropriate thermodynamic and/or kinetic conditions. Due to their excellent surface properties, nanoparticles can be utilized as hydrate kinetic promoters. Here, the kinetics of the CO2 + tetra‐n‐butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB) semi‐clathrate hydrates system in the presence of two distinct nanofluid suspensions containing graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and Al2O3 nanoparticles is evaluated. The results reveal that the kinetics of hydrate formation is inhibited by increasing the weight fraction of TBAB in aqueous solution. GO and Al2O3 are the most effective kinetic promoters for hydrates of (CO2 + TBAB). Furthermore, the aqueous solutions of TBAB + GO or Al2O3 noticeably increase the storage capacity compared to TBAB aqueous solution systems.  相似文献

The relation between anthropogenic emissions of CO2 and its increased levels in the atmosphere with global warming and climate change has been well established and accepted. Major portion of carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere, originates from combustion of fossil fuels. Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) offers a promising fossil fuel technology considered as a clean coal-based process for power generation particularly if accompanied by precombustion capture. The latter includes separation of carbon dioxide from a synthesis gas mixture containing 40 mol% CO2 and 60 mol% H2.A novel approach for capturing CO2 from the above gas mixture is to use gas hydrate formation. This process is based on selective partition of CO2 between hydrate phase and gas phase and has already been studied with promising results. However high-pressure requirement for hydrate formation is a major problem. We have used semiclathrate formation from tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) to experimentally investigate CO2 capture from a mixture containing 40.2 mol% of CO2 and 59.8 mol% of H2. The results shows that in one stage of gas hydrate formation and dissociation, CO2 can be enriched from 40 mol% to 86 mol% while the concentration of CO2 in equilibrium gas phase is reduced to 18%. While separation efficiency of processes based on hydrates and semi-clathrates are comparable, the presence of TBAB improves the operating conditions significantly. Furthermore, CO2 concentration could be increased to 96 mol% by separating CO2 in two stages.  相似文献

Understanding the phase behavior and formation kinetics of CO2 hydrate is essential for developing the sequestration process of CO2 into the deep ocean and its feasibility. Three-phase equilibria of solid hydrate, liquid water, and vapor were determined for aqueous mixtures containing CO2 and NaCl/clay to examine the effect of both ocean electrolytes and sediments on hydrate stability. Due to the capillary effect by clay pores and inhibition effect by NaCl the corresponding hydrate formation pressure appeared to be a little higher than that required for simple and pure hydrate at specified temperature. In addition, the hydrate formation kinetics of carbon dioxide in pure water and aqueous NaCl solutions with or without clay mineral were also measured at various conditions. The formation kinetic behavior was found to be strongly influenced by pressure, temperature and electrolyte concentration. A simplified kinetic model having two adjustable parameters was proposed and the estimated results agreed well with the experimental data. This paper is dedicated to Professor Wha Young Lee on the occasion of his retirement from Seoul National University.  相似文献

Natural gas industry encounters systems that consist of gases like CO2 and H2S, and aqueous solutions of methanol and mixed electrolytes. A knowledge of the phase behavior of such systems, including hydrate formation, is essential in gas production and the design of facilities for gas transportation and processing. Recently, Dholabhai et al. (1997, 1996) and Bishnoi and Dholabhai (1998) described equilibrium conditions for CO2 and gas mixtures containing CO2 in the presence of methanol, electrolytes and ethylene glycol. In the present work aqueous three phase (aqueous liquid solution, vapor and incipient hydrate) equilibrium conditions of H2S hydrate formation in aqueous solutions of electrolytes and methanol are measured in the temperature range of 272 to 294 K and pressure range of 0.3 to 1.0 MPa. A ‘full view’ sapphire variable volume cell with a movable piston is used to obtain the experimental data.  相似文献
