The role of visualization and its capabilities are discussed. The loss of information incurred in translating a three-dimensional scene into a two-dimensional image plane and ways of compensating for it are considered. The need for interactive capability is stressed. The dichotomy between the use of visualization for analysis and for communication is traced to the way the technology evolved. That is, historically, computer graphics has been used in two separate and quite different industries: for science and engineering, and for entertainment. DefibViz is a software application developed for defibrillation simulation and visualization. It exploits both surface techniques and methods for the interactive exploration of volumetric datasets for the analysis of transthoracic defibrillation simulation results. DefibViz\ has a graphical user interface for the specification of the shape, size, position, and applied voltage of a defibrillator's electrodes. An option is provided for using 3-D slice plane widgets, which operate on the volumetric datasets, such that the distribution of the voltage gradient induced by an electric shock can be visually inspected in various tissues throughout the myocardium and torso. One goal of DefibViz is to enhance understanding of how electrode parameters relate to the change of the voltage gradient distribution throughout the heart, which may help lead to optimal defibrillator design. DefibViz; is significant, in that, it is built by using an open-source graphics and visualization framework providing a platform for subsequent modifiability and extensibility. Moreover, it integrates simulation and visualization techniques, which previously required the running of several independent software executables, into an enhanced, seamless, and comprehensive software application.  相似文献

This article describes the Open Source SCA Implementation::Embedded project, an open source software development kit designed for rapid prototyping of software defined radios consistent with the software communications architecture. The SCA is a product of the American military's SDR acquisition program and has played a large role in SDR development in the military and in the wireless industry. OSSIE was designed for use in wireless communications curricula and research efforts, so it is easy to learn and illustrative of software engineering, programming, and communications engineering concepts important in industrial practice today. OSSIE includes a core framework (i.e., common services enumerated in the SCA). It also includes graphical user interface-oriented tools that are easily learned and free to download and use. The tools auto-generate SCA-specific component source code and supporting files, leaving the developer to provide signal processing functionality. In addition, visualization tools for debugging and a growing library of SDR software components are available. Discussed herein are examples of SDRs designed using OSSIE, including embedded applications. OSSIE enables easy transition from concepts to practice in SDR design for communications engineers who may not have a strong software background.  相似文献

During the next five years, the huge change taking place in the computing environment due to the Internet will give math and scientific software a buffeting as bruising as the transition from DOS to Windows or from workstations to desktop computers. But in the near future, the Year 2000 bug will probably be on the minds of many engineers and scientists, who will attempt to make sure that their work will not be affected by it. Besides that, software capabilities will expand while prices shrink, making many powerful programs more affordable. Such high-end applications as solids modeling, for example, are becoming less costly, thanks to an increase in the processing speed of PCs. In addition to changing the nature of computing, the Internet is changing the way math and scientific software works and has become a way to distribute software, in some cases free of charge. Also worth noting is the renaissance of Fortran, which through some powerful programs has extended its use as a data analysis and visualization tool. Nowadays, there exist web sites that allow users to retrieve and install software in an easy way. The performance of these sites may be poor if they are used in wireless networks; the reason is the inadequate use of the net resources that they need. If these kinds of systems are designed using mobile agent technology the previous problem might be avoided. In this paper, we present a comparison between the performance of a software retrieval system especially designed to be used in a wireless network and the performance of a software retrieval system similar to the well-known Tucows.com web site. In order to compare performance, we make use of a software performance process enriched with formal techniques. The process has as important features that it uses UML as a design notation and it uses stochastic Petri nets as formal model. We developed the Active3D-Build to improve civil engineering project management. This Web-based platform lets geographically dispersed project participants-from architects to electricians to plumbers-directly use and exchange project documents in a centralized virtual environment using a simple Web browser. A 3D visualization lets participants move around in the building being designed and obtain information about the objects that compose it. The Active3D-Lab is the software development arm of the Archimede Group, a civil engineering and facility management firm. The Active3DLab team includes three administrative staff members, eight developers, and three University of Bourgogne researchers. Scientific data is inevitably digital and stored in a wide variety of formats in heterogeneous systems. Scientists need to access an integrated view of remote or local heterogeneous data sources with advanced data access, analysis, and visualization tools. Building a digital library for scientific data requires accessing and manipulating data extracted from flat files or databases, documents retrieved from the Web as well as data generated by software. We present an approach to wrapping web data sources, databases, flat files, or data generated by tools through a database view mechanism. Generally, a wrapper has two tasks: it first sends a query to the source to retrieve data and, second builds the expected output with respect to the virtual structure. Our wrappers are composed of a retrieval component based on an intermediate object view mechanism called search views mapping the source capabilities to attributes, and an Extensible Markup Language (XML) engine, respectively, to perform these two tasks. The originality of the approach consists of: 1) a generic view mechanism to access seamlessly data sources with limited capabilities and 2) the ability to wrap data sources as well as the useful specific tools they may provide. Molecular visualization software programs display a 3D arrangement of molecules in an interactive format, allowing researchers to examine known molecules as well as theoretical molecules in drug development. In the last two decades, biochemistry has shifted its emphasis from bonds and connectivity to surfaces and interactions. Molecular visualization, at the intersection of computer graphics and chemistry, accelerated this transition with interactive displays of 3D molecular models on personal computers. The free access to both molecular databases and visualization programs has enhanced our understanding of basic biological concepts. Molecular visualization also encompasses a thriving Internet community that is constantly honing and dynamically revising software implementations in response to user feedback. There's no question that computer technology has revolutionized biomedical fields such as biochemistry, genetic engineering, and molecular biology. We can now study critical biomolecules in their folded form rather than as a string of amino acids.  相似文献

As software development migrates from its roots as a process for building a custom product to a process for building packaged products, there is a greater need for an appropriate product development process model that is market-oriented. Field data suggests that process models are not widely used in the package industry. An overview of normative process models in the software engineering, engineering management, and marketing disciplines reveals that all of them fall short in one way or another for packaged software processes. Eight special needs are identified that set the packaged software process model apart from other individual models: addressing multiple user types; differentiating the product; finding the remote customer; involving the remote customer; facilitating speed of development; creating the marketing interface; developing in a highly iterative mode; and releasing a near defect-free product. These needs are operationalized into the proposed packaged software process model. The process model is based on two central constructs: a requirements loop; and a quality loop. The loops are separated by a stage in which requirements specifications are frozen. The requirements loop's goal is to discover requirements early and comprehensively. It is incremental (relying on prototyping), has several evaluation and exit points, and structures involvement of customers and other external sources such as marketing. A system has been developed to facilitate three-dimensional visualizations of tomographic image data. Tomographic techniques yield parallel planes of data at discrete locations; thus, a series of images comprises a three-dimensional database. From this database, a system has been developed to perform three-dimensional calculations, measurements, and display. The system consists of a conventional two-dimensional video monitor, a digitizing tablet for user interaction and region-of-interest (ROI) definition, application-oriented computational software, and an image display system for true three-dimensional database visualization. The three-dimensional display makes use of a varifocal mirror system with vector graphics capability. Through the use of specialized contouring software, we illustrate the utility of this system in the specific examples of displays prepared from magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain and carotid arteries. It can be concluded that this system will provide valuable diagnostic and physiologic information that will provide added insight into normal and abnormal structure and its relationship to function.  相似文献
