A report is made on an experience of teaching a senior-year course on software maintenance, centered around a maintenance project. For the course, students organized themselves into groups and worked on adaptive and perfective maintenance of selected real-world software products. The projects involved such issues as code understanding, requirements engineering and maintenance design, and dealt with both open-source and proprietary software. The main triumphs and pitfalls of the course are recounted, and recommendations are made on project selection and general course conduct.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a sophisticated simulation-based task on students' learning of course-related content, ability to deal with complex, open-ended problems, and attitudes toward the Interactive Site Investigation Software (ISIS) and the course. Students were required to conduct a hazardous waste site investigation using the simulation software designed specifically for the course. ISIS simulated physical processes as well as real-world engineering processes. Assessment of student outcomes was based on the use of constructed-response knowledge maps to measure content understanding, and surveys to measure student attitudes and use of cognitive processes. Students reported very positive attitudes toward the ISIS experience, appeared to have gained substantial knowledge over the course of ISIS use, and perceived the ISIS activity as being generally effective in improving their skills in dealing with complex projects, linking theory to real world applications, and improving their problem-solving performance. Our assessment of student outcomes was a successful first attempt, but more work is needed to validate our measures with advanced students, particularly when the task is complex and requires interdisciplinary knowledge  相似文献

CASE tool learnability is analyzed within the settings of lab sessions associated with an undergraduate software engineering course. The organization of the lab is presented, together with the impact of CASE tool learnability on software development exercises. CASE tool learnability affects the breadth and depth of students' exercises because of the time limitations of the lab sessions. Experienced functionality, determined by the number of functions that have to be exercised by the students versus those available in the tool, is a key aspect of learnability. A common question in practice is "what are the circumstances in which agile methodologies should be adopted for more effective software development?" For instance, is the agile method suited for the development of modern industrial automation software? Actually this is a hard problem to address, and the right answer can be determined only by the requirements and constraints of each individual project. The size of projects in the industrial automation arena varies from small-size software with limited specific functionality to large-scale software systems with comprehensive functionality and rigorous requirements. A number of agilists are seeking ways to expand the use of agile methodologies for efficient development of larger software-intensive projects and effective management of distributed development teams. However, for safety-critical industrial automation software development, caution should be exercised in employing agile methodologies, as the detailed analysis of each software elements is needed and the system may have intense interactions with other software and hardware systems.  相似文献

An operating system course draws from a well-defined fundamental theory, but one needs to consider how more recent advances, not necessarily in the theory itself, can be applied to improve the course and the general body of knowledge of the student. The goal of This work is to show how recent software engineering developments can be introduced to such a course to not only satisfy the theory requirements, but also make the theory more understandable. Some aspects of the development of a modern engineering graphics course for first-year engineering students are described. The objective of the course is to teach students the graphic presentation of 2-D and 3-D data, to give an understanding of the graphic-user/computer communication, and to apply these concepts efficiently to engineering problems. Computer science studies in Spain are organized in such a way that software engineering courses normally appear in the last years. This situation establishes a programming-first approach in the overall curricular structure, and the resulting situation produces several unwanted side effects. One of the main problems is that students lack the abstraction capability they need in order to model software. For this reason, the practical classes of the first software engineering course have been organized in workshop sessions, where each session is devoted to a concrete modeling technique. A workshop session is built around a problem published on the teacher's website. The session is divided into two parts. In the first part, the students are organized into work groups, and they give an initial solution to the proposed modeling problem. In the second part of the session, one volunteer group presents its solution, and afterwards, in a moderated debate, the rest of the students discuss the proposed solution. Finally, the volunteer group writes a workshop session report that contains the final agreed-on solution. This approach has been successfully applied to the software modeling practical classes of a first software engineering course during the last five years, achieving important improvements in the students' abstraction capabilities, which is much needed in software modeling.  相似文献

This paper describes a proposed laboratory project involving the design of a myoelectric-controlled partial-hand prosthesis to reinforce mechatronic education. The proposal focuses mainly on extract electromyogram (EMG) signals generated during contraction of the biceps. The EMG signals are first amplified and filtered by a laboratory-designed electronic circuit and then reprocessed using a microcontroller to drive the servomotor so that the designed prosthesis can be properly controlled. The project introduces students to component-level and system-level design and exposes them to the integration of a microcontroller, electronic circuits, sensors, and prosthesis mechanisms. Moreover, since the project results in a working prosthesis, student enthusiasm for mechatronic education increases, and they see its relevance to the field in applied engineering. Implementation of the laboratory project within the curriculum has been demonstrated to be highly motivational and educational and has even helped to attract more students to study mechatronic applications.  相似文献

An introductory very large scale integration (VLSI) design course has been taught at the University of Michigan (USA) since 1980. In 1990, it was redesigned around a simple 8-bit microprocessor project in the format described in this paper; in 1996, the project was updated to a 16 bit reduced instruction set computer (RISC) processor. The authors describe the course philosophy, content, and the baseline architecture from which class projects begin. The key features of the course are: close coordination of lectures and project activity; prompt and regular feedback on design work; and a schedule which spreads the workload over the full term.
