In 1864, Maxwell conjectured from his famous equations that light is a transverse electromagnetic wave. Maxwell's conjecture does not imply that he believed that light could be generated electromagnetically. In fact, he was silent about electromagnetic waves, and their generation and detection. It took almost a quarter of a century before Hertz discovered electromagnetic waves and his brilliant experiments confirmed Maxwell's theory. Maxwell's ideas and equations were expanded, modified, and made understandable by the efforts of Hertz, FitzGerald, Lodge, and Heaviside, the last three being referred to as the "Maxwellians." The early history of electromagnetic waves, up to the death of Hertz in 1894, is briefly discussed. The work of Hertz and the Maxwellians is briefly reviewed in the context of electromagnetic waves. It is found that historical facts do not support the views proposed by some, in the past, that Hertz's epoch-making findings and contributions were "significantly influenced by the Maxwellians.".  相似文献

This journal, our much loved and greatly respected "red rag", will be a mere 18 years old this year of the IEEE Centennial--only a youth in the history of electronics and electronic applications. Nonetheless, it has become a most important journal for electronic workers of many types. One hundred thirty-seven male and two hundred twenty-five female undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee heard recordings of 14 short, informative messages. Each message had been recorded by one of seven male or seven female upper level communication students. Following each message subjects responded to six multiple choice items about the content of the message. Analysis of variance showed no significant difference in listening scores for male and female subjects. A significant interaction between sex of listener and sex of speaker was found, but this interaction accounted for so little of the total variance that it was deemed of little practical importance. It was concluded that neither the sex of the listener nor the interaction of sex of listeners and sex of speakers were of much consequence in determining the listening scores of the subjects of this experiment.  相似文献

Rhetorical scholarship has recently made significant contributions to an emerging “meta-field” that we might loosely call “shit studies.” In this essay, we review scholarship pertaining to the study of “shit” in communication. Specifically, we review current trends in the theoretical orientation of shit studies by advancing the ideas of points de sensorium and/as the stank of rhetoric. Drawing on theories of the point de capiton (quilting point), we are able to note some commonalities in the study of shit in communication scholarship. The stank and the points de sensorium speak to a theorization of affect and bullshit-texts.  相似文献

The electroencephalogram (EEG), the blood pressure wave, and the electrocardiogram (ECG), produce patterns that the eye of the physician has empirically correlated with important aspects of health. Digital computer techniques for the recognition of these patterns are made particularly difficult by the realities of pattern context sensitivity, frequent signal artifact, real-time operation, finite storage limitations, and reasonable cost. Evaluations of these techniques are handicapped by the absence of absolute standards, the wide signal variability associated with pathologic states, and the sheer mechanics of comparison with human analysis. Computer analysis of the EEG has been directed toward monitoring sleep and certain pathologic states, leaving the more difficult problem of diagnosis to the trained neurologist. Automatic pattern recognition of the blood pressure wave has been implemented with straightforward techniques for diagnostic use in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and for monitoring in the intensive care unit. Computer analysis of the ECG has been directed toward morphological and rhythm diagnosis, having great potential utility in clinical heart stations, and toward rhythm monitoring, a most practical application arising in coronary intensive care units. Promising systems are emerging, but years of evaluation and adjustment will be necessary to meet the need for both accuracy and economy.  相似文献

Nanosized Ti, Al, Ni, Cr, and Au films were deposited onto KEF-20 (100)-oriented silicon plates with a diameter of 100 mm using the method of thermal evaporation in a vacuum. The value and uniformity of the distribution of the specific electrical resistance of the metal films were estimated by measuring their thickness and surface electrical resistance via the four-probe method. The specific electrical resistance of such films was shown to be considerably higher than for bulk materials. The observed increase in the surface resistance at the edges of the film was due to both the decrease in the thickness of the film and the increase in the specific electrical resistance of the material of the film. The proved regimes were used to obtain metal layers on gallium nitride substrates.  相似文献
