The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has completed work on a series of standards on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) equipment functional operations and network element management. The objective of these standards is to enable flexible design and interoperability of network elements for use in a global ATM network, independent of any specific implementation. This article discusses these standards with respect to their development and application in planning ATM networks. Specifically, it addresses the following: the modeling approach taken in the development of the ITU standards, key operational features specified in the ATM network element functional model, and the capabilities of the ATM network element management interface. Examples of ATM equipment are provided to illustrate how the functional models specified in the ITU standards may be used by network planners and equipment manufacturers to specify and develop ATM equipment tailored to specific needs, while ensuring network interoperability. This paper presents the development of satellite ATM for broadband ISDN based on the Research in Advanced Communications in Europe (RACE) CATALYST project. The purpose of the project is to develop an experimental ATM satellite link for the future B-ISDN services, particularly for the interconnections of the ATM testbeds which are in the form of broadband islands developed in Europe. Then initial ATM based B-ISDN can be introduced by interconnections of these broadband islands. An evolutionary approach has been adopted in the development of the ATM networks that the CATALYST project has developed the equipment to be able to interconnect the newly developed ATM testbeds as well as the existing networks such as DQDB, FDDI and Ethernet networks. In March 1994, the project carried out an experiment on the second demonstratoras the Laboratories of Alcatel Telespace in Nanteere near Paris to demonstrate the capability of the satellite ATM connections supporting data, voice, video and multimedia applications. This experiment provided a real system demonstration of satellite ATM for B-ISDN. In the light of the experiment, this paper presents the model and architecture of the ATM satellite equipment, studies the relevant issues and the impact of ATM-via-satellite on the applications and the protocols, and evaluates of satellite ATM based on some measured and simulated results. 相似文献

The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is considered to be a key technology for B-ISDN. This paper discusses VLSI trends and how VLSI's can be applied to realize ATM switching node systems for B-ISDN. Implementing a practical ATM node system will require the development of technologies such as high-throughput ATM switch LSI's with up to 10 Gb/s capacity and SDH termination technology based on optical fiber transmission. An ATM traffic-handling mechanism with Quality of Service (QoS) controls such as ATM layer performance monitoring, virtual channel handling, usage parameter control, and VP shaping requires several hundred thousand logic gates and several megabytes of high-speed static RAM; VLSI's must be introduced if such mechanisms are to be implemented. ATM node system architecture is based on design principles of a building-block-type structure and hierarchical multiplexing. The basic ATM call handling module, the AHM, is composed mainly of a line termination block and a self-routing switch block; we analyzed this module from the viewpoint of the amount of hardware it requires. Finally, future ATM node systems are discussed on the basis of 0.2-μm VLSI development trends and hardware requirements such as the need for ultrahigh integration of logic gate with memory, multichip modules, and low power dissipation technology 相似文献
