Reports an error in "Neurobehavioral and life-quality changes after cerebral revascularization" by Anne Dull Baird, James I. Ausman, Fernando G. Diaz, Manuel Dujovny, Kenneth M. Adams and Mark W. Shatz (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1988[Feb], Vol 56[1], 148-151). The authors' names were incorrectly ordered. The correct order is as follows: Anne Dull Baird, Kenneth M. Adams, Mark W. Shatz, James I. Ausman, Fernando G. Diaz, and Manuel Dujovny. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1988-21086-001.) Neuropsychological and life-quality changes were studied 6 months after carotid endarterectomy, superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery bypass, multiple revascularization, and vertebrobasilar revascularization procedures. These changes were compared with those in patients with recent severe spinal complaints and in patients for whom revascularization was considered but not elected. Subjects were enrolled prospectively. We did not see statistically significant differences in neurobehavioral gains in patients undergoing cerebral revascularization versus those considered but not selected for surgery and versus patients with spinal complaints. Small sample size, marked intragroup variability, and lack of randomized subject assignments may have obscured modest-to-moderate treatment effects in some individuals. Reports an error in "That swimsuit becomes you: Sex differences in self-objectification, restrained eating, and math performance" by Barbara L. Fredrickson, Tomi-Ann Roberts, Stephanie M. Noll, Diane M. Quinn and Jean M. Twenge (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1998[Jul], Vol 75[1], 269-284). This article contains errors in the Participants sections. The corrected information is included in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1998-04530-020.) Objectification theory (B. L. Fredrickson & T Roberts, 1997) posits that American culture socializes women to adopt observers' perspectives on their physical selves. This self-objectification is hypothesized to (a) produce body shame, which in turn leads to restrained eating, and (b) consume attentional resources, which is manifested in diminished mental performance. Two experiments manipulated self-objectification by having participants try on a swimsuit or a sweater. Experiment 1 tested 72 women and found that self-objectification increased body shame, which in turn predicted restrained eating. Experiment 2 tested 42 women and 40 men and found that these effects on body shame and restrained eating replicated for women only. Additionally, self-objectification diminished math performance for women only. Discussion centers on the causes and consequences of objectifying women's bodies. Reports an error in "How good is the evidence for a production deficiency among learning disabled students" by Margaret J. Shepherd, Lynn M. Gelzheiser and Roberta A. Solar (Journal of Educational Psychology, 1985[Oct], Vol 77[5], 553-561). Figures 1 and 2 (p. 557 and 559, respectively) are reversed. The captions are correct, but Figure 1 should be above the caption for Figure 2 and Figure 2 should be above the caption for Figure 1. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1986-14779-001.) Investigated the spontaneous use of mnemonic strategies by learning disabled (LD) and non-LD children and adolescents to examine whether LD Ss can be distinguished from their non-LD peers on the basis of strategy use and recall. In Exp I, 105 LD and 105 non-LD 9-15 yr olds were administered a picture study/recall task, in which the strategies of interest were categorical organization during study and clustering during recall. In Exp II, 140 LD and 140 non-LD 11-17 yr olds were administered a paired-associate recall task, in which the strategy of interest was elaboration. In both studies, LD Ss earned lower mean recall scores than did the non-LD Ss. As a group, LD Ss did not differ from non-LD Ss in the use of categorical organization during study but showed less categorical clustering at recall. Fewer LD Ss used elaboration. Despite these differences, recall and strategy use were not useful predictors of classification as LD or non-LD and were only weak to moderate correlates of academic achievement. Reports an error in "Clinical significance of psychotherapy for unipolar depression: A meta-analytic approach to social comparison" by Michael T. Nietzel, Robert L. Russell, Kelly A. Hemmings and Monica L. Gretter (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1987[Apr], Vol 55[2], 156-161). The data presented in Table 2 were incorrect because a row and a column were inadvertently omitted. The corrected Table 2 appears in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1987-28817-001.) This study used meta-analysis to study the clinical significance of psychotherapy for symptoms of unipolar depression. The following questions were addressed: How similar is the posttherapy adjustment of depressed adults to that of nondepressed adults? Is this adjustment maintained at follow-up? What dimensions of treatment, therapists, or design are associated with clinical significance? Using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), we calculated composite BDI norms from 28 published studies. Sixty effect sizes (from 31 outcome studies utilizing the BDI) were calculated. The results indicated that psychotherapy produces outcomes that have moderate clinical significance and that are well-maintained at follow-up, that individual therapy is associated with greater clinical significance than group treatment, and that type of therapy is not related to improvement. Alternative approaches for operationalizing clinical significance as the return of individuals to normal levels of functioning are discussed. Reports an error in "Use of analogy in learning scientific concepts" by Carol M. Donnelly and Mark A. McDaniel (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1993[Jul], Vol 19[4], 975-987). The captions for Figures 1 and 2 on pp. 979 and 980, respectively, were transposed. The figures and the correct captions are included in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1993-44140-001.) Four experiments compared learning of scientific concepts as expressed in either traditional literal form or through an analogy. Comprehension of basic-level details and inferential implications was measured through multiple-choice testing. In Exp 1, literal or analogical renditions were presented in textual form only. In Exp 2, text was accompanied by a dynamic video. In Exp 3, the video and text literal rendition was compared with a text-only analogical rendition. In Exp 4, Ss read only about a familiar domain. Ss consistently answered basic-level questions most accurately when concepts were expressed literally, but answered inferential questions most accurately when concepts were expressed analogically. Analysis of individual differences (Exp 2) indicated that this interaction strongly characterized the conceptual learning of science novices. The results are discussed within the framework of schema induction. [A correction to this article appears in Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1993, Vol 19(5), 1093. Reports an error in "Play therapy and psychopharmacology: What the play therapist needs to know" by Daniel S. Sweeney and Ross J. Tatum (International Journal of Play Therapy, 1995, Vol 4[2], 41-57). The table "Childhood DSM-IV Diagnoses and Psychotropic Medications That May Be Indicated" on pages 46-47 contained three (3) errors. A corrected copy of the table is included with the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1997-05134-004.) Provides a basic overview of pediatric psychopharmacology and examines specific related considerations for the play therapist. The article also addresses some medication considerations specific to the treatment modality of play therapy. It is argued that possession of even a cursory knowledge about child psychopharmacology places the play therapist in a better position to provide quality treatment. A list of childhood Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV) diagnoses and psychotropic medications that may be indicated is provided. Reports an error in "Illusory correlation in the perception of group attitudes" by Russell Spears, Joop van der Pligt and J. Richard Eiser (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1985[Apr], Vol 48[4], 863-875). In the article, several important corrections and additions were not made in the course of the production process. The corrected entries are included in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1985-20035-001.) 126 undergraduates with pro- or anti-attitudes toward nuclear power and 15 local members of a campaign for nuclear disarmament viewed opinion statements supposedly made by residents of 2 towns. One town was larger and statements from it occurred frequently, the other was small and statements from it were infrequent. Statements expressed either pro- or anti-attitudes to the building of a nuclear power station, in which one position was in a majority over the other. Despite the fact that the proportion of pro- and anti-statements was the same for both towns, it was predicted that the most statistically infrequent category, minority position/small town, would appear most distinctive and receive greatest encoding, leading Ss to overrepresent this category. It was also hypothesized that attitude-congruent positions would appear more salient than others because of their self-relevance, resulting in enhanced illusory correlation for minority-congruent attitude holders (distinctiveness plus salience). Futhermore, it was predicted that salience and therefore illusory correlation would increase as a function of attitude extremity for these Ss. All 3 predictions were supported, replicating the findings of D. L. Hamilton and R. K. Gifford (1976) that distinctiveness, operationalized as statistical infrequency, mediated an illusory correlation effect. Reports an error in "Clinical comparability of the standard MMPI and the MMPI-168" by Ronald R. Hart, John W. McNeill, David J. Lutz and Thomas G. Adkins (Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, 1986[Jun], Vol 17[3], 269-272). In this article, the copyright information was incorrect. The corrected copyright information is included in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1986-26219-001.) Examined the clinical correspondence of the full-scale Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the MMPI-168 on a psychiatric screening sample of 210 men (mean age 43.27 yrs). The present results fail to replicate previous optimistic findings regarding the worth of the MMPI-168 and accent the need for caution in any further use of this abbreviated instrument. Reports an error in "Massive IQ gains in 14 nations: What IQ tests really measure" by James R. Flynn (Psychological Bulletin, 1987[Mar], Vol 101[2], 171-191). In this article, it was wrongly stated that that U. Schallberger put forward a hypothesis or hypotheses concerning the magnitude of Swiss IQ gains; in fact, he did not. Flynn wishes to acknowledge this error and stress that his critique of these hypotheses does not apply to Schallberger. Schallberger had earlier come to the same conclusion as Flynn, namely, that the Swiss have probably made sizable IQ gains, but all estimates of magnitude would have only speculative status. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1987-17534-001.) Data from 14 nations reveal IQ gains ranging from 5 to 25 points in a single generation. Some of the largest gains occur on culturally reduced tests and tests of fluid intelligence. The Norwegian data show that a nation can make significant gains on a culturally reduced test while suffering losses on other tests. The Dutch data proved the existence of unknown environmental factors so potent that they account for 15 of the 20 points gained. The hypothesis that best fits the results is that IQ tests do not measure intelligence but rather a correlate with a weak causal link to intelligence. This hypothesis can also explain difficult trends on various mental tests, such as the combination of IQ gains and Scholastic Aptitude Test losses in the United States. Reports an error in "The nature of self-referent encoding: The contributions of elaborative and organizational processes" by Stanley B. Klein and Judith Loftus (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1988[Jul], Vol 55[1], 5-11). The word case should have been deleted from the first sentence of the left-hand column of page 9. The sentence should read, "Here, self-reference produced recall almost identical to that found for the definition task." (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1988-28556-001.) A number of investigators have demonstrated that relating information to the self (self-referent encoding) produces better recall than structural or semantic encoding of the same material. The mechanisms responsible for this self-referent recall advantage, however, still are not well understood. Some have proposed an elaborative processing explanation (e.g., Rogers, Kuiper, & Kirker, 1977), whereas others have argued for an organizational processing interpretation (e.g., Klein & Kihlstrom, 1986). We present a paradigm for clarifying the respective contributions of these two processes to the recall of material encoded self-referentially. Our findings suggest that both elaborative and organizational processes are involved, but which process plays the larger role in recall depends on the material being judged. We discuss the implications of a dual-processing explanation of self-referent encoding. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reports an error in "Taste reactivity responses elicited by cocaine-, phencyclidine-, and methamphetamine-paired sucrose solutions" by Linda A. Parker (Behavioral Neuroscience, 1993[Feb], Vol 107[1], 118-129). Table 1, on page 119, contains two errors. In the first section, the dose/route for the agent nicotine should read as follows: 1.2-2.0 mg/kg sc. In the second section, the dose/route for the agent morphine should read as follows: 2-80 mg/kg ip. Also, on page 121, paragraph 3, line 14, the parenthetical information after 40 mg/kg cocaine should read (40C; 2 × 20 mg/kg/3 cc). (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1993-24959-001.) The nature of flavor–drug associations produced by a range of doses of the reinforcing agents cocaine (5, 10, 15, 20, or 40 mg/kg, sc), phencyclidine (0.5, 2, 10, or 20 mg/kg, sc), and methamphetamine (2, 5, or 10 mg/kg, ip) were assessed by the taste reactivity (TR) test and the conditioned taste avoidance (CTA) test. Even at the highest doses tested, none of the agents produced aversive TR responding. At doses that produced equivalent-strength CTA, lithium did establish aversive TR responding. Results provide evidence that drugs that serve as reinforcers in other paradigms produce conditioned flavor avoidance that is not motivated by a conditioned dislike for the flavor. Reports an error in "Experienced emotion and affect recognition in adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder" by Lisa J. Rapport, Sara L. Friedman, Angela Tzelepis and Amy Van Voorhis (Neuropsychology, 2002[Jan], Vol 16[1], 102-110). On Page 102, in the byline and in the author note, and on page 109 in the Rapport et al. (2001) reference, Sara Friedman's middle initial incorrectly reads "L." Her correct middle initial is "R." (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2002-00339-011.) Emotional competence and deficits that may disrupt interpersonal interactions were evaluated in 28 adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 28 demographically equivalent controls. Participants completed tasks assessing affect recognition and experienced emotional intensity. Adults with ADHD performed worse in affect recognition than did adults without the disorder; however, the impairment was unrelated to gross perceptual processes, fundamental abilities in facial recognition, or attentional aspects of affect perception. Moreover, intensity of experienced emotion moderated affect recognition: Among controls, experienced emotion facilitated affect recognition. Among adults with ADHD, who reported significantly greater intensity, experienced emotion was inversely related to affect recognition. Results are consistent with theories of ADHD as a deficit in behavioral inhibition; yet, results may merely reflect a constellation of deficits associated with the disorder. Using cases of harassment by leaders, the authors examined the effects of target perceptions of leader responses to sexual harassment and whether leader implementation of harassment policies made a difference beyond the impact of the policies themselves. Results showed that women who perceived that leaders made honest efforts to stop harassment felt significantly freer to report harassment, were more satisfied with the complaint process, and reported greater commitment than did those viewing leaders as more harassment tolerant. Different leadership levels had different effects, with hierarchically proximal leaders generally having the greatest impact. Leadership mediated the relationship between organizational policy and outcomes, supporting the view that a key role for leaders is establishing an ethical organizational climate that reinforces formal harassment policies through actions. Reports an error in "The Memory Functioning Questionnaire for assessment of memory complaints in adulthood and old age" by Michael J. Gilewski, Elizabeth M. Zelinski and K. Warner Schaie (Psychology and Aging, 1990[Dec], Vol 5[4], 482-490). In the aforementioned article, the author note at the beginning of the article should have contained the following statement: "The Memory Functioning Questionnaire (MFQ) items that appear in the appendix at the end of this article were published previously in 'Memory Functioning Questionnaire (MFQ)' by Michael J. Gilewski and Elizabeth M. Zelinski (Psychopharmacology Bulletin, 1988, Vol. 24, No. 4, pp. 665-670). The current article reflects the construction validation, scoring, and interpretation of the MFQ more accurately than does the article that appeared in Psychopharmacology Bulletin." (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1991-08788-001.) The results of psychometric analyses of the Metamemory Questionnaire (MQ) of E. M. Zelinski et al (1980), developed to evaluate perception of everyday memory functioning, are presented for a sample of 343 men and 435 women (aged 16-89 yrs). Exploratory factor analysis yielded 4 correlated factors (General Frequency of Forgetting, Retrospective Functioning, and Mnemonics Usage) that accounted for 36.7% of the variance in responses to the MQ. Factor structure was invariant across age groups (16-54 vs 55-89 yrs), 2 independent samples, and over 3 yrs. Because some of the original MQ scales did not load on the factors, only 64 of the original 92 items were retained for inclusion in the Memory Functioning Questionnaire (MFQ). Internal consistency of MFQ scores is high. The MFQ is therefore reliable for evaluating memory self-appraisals. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reports an error in "Reasons to leave shiftwork and psychological and psychosomatic complaints of former shiftworkers" by Michael Frese and Klaus Okonek (Journal of Applied Psychology, 1984[Aug], Vol 69[3], 509-514). On p. 510, first column, third line from the bottom of the page, the N for the OR group should be 96, not 36. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1984-32942-001.) 191 male blue-collar workers who had previously worked nights and shifts were differentiated into 3 groups: a group that had left night- and shiftwork because of health reasons; another that left it for various other reasons; and a middle group that had a combination of health and other reasons for leaving. Ss completed measures of environmental and psychological stress, psychosomatic and other health complaints, and irritation and strain. Findings show that the 1st group had more health complaints than the one that left for other reasons. They were less skilled, had been unemployed less often, and were typically told by their physician to leave shiftwork. They had also stayed in shiftwork longer than the group that left shiftwork for other reasons. It is suggested that studies on former shiftworkers should differentiate between these groups so as not to underestimate the real problems of former shiftworkers who left for health reasons. Reports an error in "Rhythms and responses" by Paul A. Kolers and Joan M. Brewster (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1985[Apr], Vol 11[2], 150-167). There is a typographical error on page 153. A correction to this error has been provided in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1986-05383-001.) Tested the assumption that there is a central clock coordinating behavior in all sensory modalities and response modes. A rhythmic tapping task was used in 3 experiments in which 12 undergraduates first attempted to synchronize responses with brief auditory, tactile, or visual stimuli and then continued to tap at the same rate on their own. Performance was most variable with visual stimuli and least variable with auditory stimuli. Results suggest that performances were not based on a common clock and that different strategies were employed when the task was presented in different modalities. The hypothesis of a single timing mechanism controlling behavior is rejected, and the validity is questioned of information processing models that are formulated without regard to temporal relations among their conjectured processes. Discussion focuses on the relation between successive responses and the means by which timing is accomplished. (56 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reports an error in "Differential effects of posterior septal lesions on dispositional and representational memory" by Garth J. Thomas and Don M. Gash (Behavioral Neuroscience, 1986[Oct], Vol 100[5], 712-719). A phrase was erroneously deleted from the text. In the seventh paragraph on p. 713, the second sentence should read as follows: Early in training individual differences were great, but by the end of adaptation training, individual differences were quite small and all rats responded at close to asymptotic speeds. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1987-06585-001.) A distinction between 2 classes of memory has been made in terms of the sensory availability of cues at the time of making discriminations that are influenced by past experience. Three tasks objectively defining this distinction were learned in a T-maze by 36 male Long-Evans rats in 3 groups: (a) a delayed non-matching-to-sample (DNMTS) that depended on representational memory; (b) a simple sensory discrimination (SD) that depended on dispositional memory; and (c) a more difficult discrimination that also depended on dispositional memory, called the simultaneous conditional discrimination (SCD). The DNMTS and SD tasks were acquired quickly; the SCD task took many more trials. Posterior septal lesions impaired DNMTS performance but had no effect on retention of tasks that depended on dispositional memory. Results indicate that dispositional and representational memory systems have at least partially distinct anatomical substrates in the brain and that it is the representational and not the conditional aspects of the DNMTS task that are impaired by the septal lesions. Reports an error in "Histamine H? receptors mediate morphine-induced locomotor hyperactivity of the C57BL/6J mouse" by G. Andrew Mickley (Behavioral Neuroscience, 1986[Feb], Vol 100[1], 79-84). An incorrect word was inadvertently printed. The last sentence of the introduction (p. 79) should read "This was accomplished by challenging the opiate-stimulated locomotion of the C57BL/6J mouse with injections of antihistamines into the nucleus accumbens/stria terminalis or lateral ventricles." (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1986-14026-001.) Locomotor hyperactivity induced in C57BL/6J male mice (N=43) by intraperitoneal morphine sulfate (30 mg/kg) was challenged with intracranial injections of antihistamines or the opiate antagonist naloxone HCl (2 μg). When 75 μg of cimetidine, an H? receptor blocker, was injected into the nucleus accumbens/stria terminalis, it significantly reduced opiate-stimulated locomotion. However, ventricular injections of cimetidine did not significantly alter hyperactivity induced by either morphine or dextroamphetamine sulfate (4 mg/kg), nor did cimetidine depress spontaneous locomotion. Although naloxone eliminated morphine-induced locomotion when injected into either the nucleus accumbens or the ventricles, chlorpheniramine (20 μg), an H? receptor blocker, failed to reduce this behavior. Data suggest that opiate-stimulated locomotion of the C57BL/6J mouse may be partially mediated by histamine H? receptors of the nucleus accumbens or closely adjacent structures. Reports an error in "Client-therapist complementarity: An analysis of the Gloria films" by Donald J. Kiesler and Chesley S. Goldston (Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1988[Apr], Vol 35[2], 127-133). The date of receipt indicated for the revision of this article was incorrect. The correct date of receipt is provided in the erratum. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 1988-36446-001.) In this investigation of Shostrom's (1966) psychotherapy demonstration films, we used a checklist inventory measure derived from the 1982 Interpersonal Circle to examine the interpersonal behavior of Gloria, her three therapists, and their respective transaction patterns. Groups of undergraduate raters observed the three films, after which they rated the interpersonal behavior of either Gloria or the therapist. Analyses of Interpersonal Circle axes and segment scores revealed significant differences in the interpersonal behaviors of the three therapists with Gloria and of Gloria with the three therapists. Analyses of transactional patterns showed departures of Gloria's behaviors from the perfect complementary fit predicted from each of the therapist's interpersonal profiles, especially for behaviors categorized on the hostile half of the Interpersonal Circle. Discussion emphasized the complex of dyadic mix and other contextual factors that need to be addressed in future interpersonal studies of psychotherapy.
