The automated, reliable, and early detection of lameness is an important aim for the future development of modern dairy operations. One promising indicator of lameness is a change in the feeding behavior of a cow. In this study, the associations between feeding behavior and lameness were evaluated. A herd of 50 cows was investigated during the winter season in a freestall barn. Feeding behavior, feed intake, milk yield, and body weight were monitored using electronic feeding troughs and an automated milking system. Gait scoring every second week was used as a measure of lameness. To analyze the effect of lameness on feeding behavior and milk yield, linear mixed models were used. Cows with more severe lameness spent less time feeding per day (104 ± 4, 101 ± 4, and 91 ± 4 min/d for lameness scores 2, 3, and 4, respectively). An interaction between parity and lameness score was detected, with severely lame primiparous cows spending the least time feeding. Severely lame cows fed faster; however, their body weights were lower than for less-lame cows. Increase in lactation stage was associated with longer daily feeding time, longer duration of feeding bouts, and lower feeding rate. Worsening of gait was associated with lower silage intake and less time spent feeding even before severe lameness was scored. The results indicate that lameness is associated with changes in feeding behavior and that such changes could be considered in the future development of remote monitoring systems. It should also be noted that impaired feeding behavior along with lameness can put the welfare of especially early lactating primiparous cows at risk. 相似文献

Lameness is a frequent health problem in dairy cows. This preliminary study aimed to detect gait differences between healthy and lame walking cows using 3-dimensional force plates. We examined left–right leg symmetry changes of healthy and lame Holstein dairy cows following claw trimming. Gait scoring (GS) was performed on d −5, 0, 1, and 7 relative to claw trimming. Before the experiment, 5 cows walked normally (initial GS = 1) and 4 cows limped moderately on a hind leg (initial GS = 3). Gait was measured on d −2, −1, 0, 1, and 7 relative to trimming by obtaining ground reaction forces as cows walked repeatedly across 2 parallel 3-dimensional force plates. From the ground reaction forces, stance phase data were derived using computerized procedures. Left–right leg symmetries of entire curves in the 3 force directions were calculated. Effects of lameness and trimming were analyzed in a mixed model, using a low lameness threshold (GS > 1). One week after claw trimming, only one cow was mildly lame. In addition, the symmetries of all 3 dimensions were significantly improved shortly after trimming. Importantly, lameness significantly worsened vertical symmetry. Lame cows walked significantly more slowly than healthy cows. In conclusion, all force symmetries seemed capable of detecting gait responses to claw trimming. Although our results are based on a small number of animals, vertical leg symmetry was affected by lameness. 相似文献

Dairy cow lameness is a serious animal welfare issue. It is also a significant cause of economic losses, reducing reproductive efficiency and milk production and increasing culling rates. The digital cushion is a complex structure composed mostly of adipose tissue located underneath the distal phalanx and has recently been phenotypically associated with incidence of claw horn disruption lesions (CHDL); namely, sole ulcers and white line disease. The objective of this study was to characterize digital cushion thickness genetically and to investigate its association with body condition score (BCS), locomotion score (LOCO), CHDL, and milk production. Data were collected from 1 large closely monitored commercial dairy farm located in upstate New York; 923 dairy cows were used. Before trimming, the following data were collected by a member of the research team: BCS, cow height measurement, and LOCO. Presence or not of CHDL (sole ulcer or white line disease, or both) was recorded at trimming. Immediately after the cows were hoof trimmed, they underwent digital sonographic B-mode examination for the measurement of digital cushion thickness. Factors such as parity number, stage of lactation, calving date, mature-equivalent 305-d milk yield (ME305MY), and pedigree information were obtained from the farm’s dairy management software (DairyCOMP 305; Valley Agricultural Software, Tulare, CA). Univariate animal models were used to obtain variance component estimations for each studied trait (CHDL, BCS, digital cushion thickness average, LOCO, height, and ME305MY) and a 6-variate analysis was conducted to estimate the genetic, residual, and phenotypic correlations between the studied traits. The heritability estimate of DCTA was 0.33 ± 0.09, whereas a statistically significant genetic correlation was estimated between DCTA and CHDL (−0.60 ± 0.29). Of the other genetic correlations, significant estimates were derived for BCS with LOCO (−0.49 ± 0.19) and ME305MY (−0.48 ± 0.20). Digital cushion thickness is moderately heritable and genetically strongly correlated with CHDL. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for mastitis and its predictors [mean somatic cell score (SCS) in early lactation, standard deviation of SCS, excessive test-day somatic cell count (SCC), udder depth (UD), fore udder attachment (FUA), and body condition score (BCS)]. Mastitis data recorded by producers were available from the national dairy cattle health system in Canada. Mastitis was defined as a binary variable based on whether or not the cow had at least 1 mastitis case in the period from calving to 305 d after calving. A Bayesian analysis using Gibbs sampling was applied. Threshold liability models were applied for binary traits (mastitis and excessive test-day SCC), and linear models were used for other normally distributed traits. For mastitis, a heritability of 0.07 was obtained. Heritability estimates for mean SCS in early lactation, standard deviation of SCS, excessive test-day SCC, UD, FUA, and BCS were 0.10, 0.04, 0.06, 0.41, 0.21, and 0.18, respectively. Mastitis was highly correlated with mean SCS in early lactation (0.63), standard deviation of SCS (0.74), and excessive test-day SCC (0.76). Moderate genetic correlations of −0.36, −0.24, and −0.28 were found between mastitis and UD, FUA, and BCS, respectively. As much as 72% of the genetic variation in mastitis resistance was explained by all the indirect predictor traits, whereas the most commonly used indirect measures of mastitis resistance (SCS in early lactation, UD, and FUA) explained together only 46% of the genetic variation in mastitis resistance. A combination of mean and standard deviation of SCS seem to be more successful in improving udder health than the traditional indirect measures. The results of the present study highlight that although routine cow SCC is the best measurement to monitor udder health, it cannot explain all the genetic variation in mastitis resistance and, therefore, direct information on mastitis resistance can be expected to yield to a more accurate genetic evaluation for this trait. 相似文献

Heel erosion is the most prevalent hoof lesion in housed dairy herds, particularly in freestall facilities. It is associated with hoof contact with manure slurry and abrasive floors. The objective was to assess changes in the risk of heel erosion from the dry period to mid lactation in primiparous and multiparous dairy cows. Nineteen pregnant primiparous cows, 22 late-lactation multiparous cows (parity = 3.2 ± 1.4; days in milk = 221 ± 38), and 16 nonlactating, pregnant multiparous cows (parity = 3.7 ± 1.4) housed in a freestall barn with concrete flooring were followed until mid lactation. The hind hooves of all the cows were examined approximately every 7 wk and heel erosion was scored. Multiparous cows more likely had heel erosion than primiparous cows (odds ratio = 11.0; 95% confidence interval = 3.7, 32.7). Time relative to calving showed a significant quadratic effect, revealing that the risk of heel erosion increased more rapidly as lactation progressed. Survival analysis showed that multiparous cows had a higher relative risk of developing heel erosion than primiparous cows (hazard ratio = 3.4). No cows improved between early and mid lactation, but 18 cows worsened. In conclusion, stage of lactation and parity were major risk factors for severe heel erosion in dairy cattle housed in freestalls. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to estimate heritabilities of milk fatty acids (FA) and genetic and phenotypic correlations among milk FA and milk production traits in Canadian Holsteins. One morning milk sample was collected from each of 3,185 dairy cows between February and June 2010 from 52 commercial herds enrolled in Valacta (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada). Individual FA percentages (g/100 g of total FA) were determined for each sample by gas chromatography. After editing the data, 2,573 cows from 46 herds remained. Genetic parameters were estimated using multitrait animal models fitted under REML. The model included fixed effects of age at calving and stage of lactation each nested within parity and random effects of herd-year-season of calving, animal, and residual. The pedigree of animals with data was traced back 5 generations on both the male and female sides to account for relationships among animals. The estimates of heritability for individual FA ranged from 0.01 to 0.39, with standard errors ranging from 0.01 to 0.06. Generally, monounsaturated FA (MUFA) and saturated FA (SFA) showed higher heritability estimates than polyunsaturated FA (PUFA). Overall, SFA were negatively genetically correlated with MUFA and PUFA, whereas genetic correlations between MUFA and PUFA were positive. The SFA showed positive associations with fat yield and fat percentage, whereas unsaturated FA were negatively associated with fat yield and fat percentage. Bovine milk FA composition could be improved through genetic selection, and selection for MUFA or against SFA could alter the bovine milk fat profile in a desirable direction. 相似文献

The present study investigated the flooring preference during the 30 h before parturition in Holstein dairy cows housed individually in a maternity pen. Seventeen multiparous cows were moved, on average, 2 d before expected calving date into an individual maternity pen with 3 different flooring surfaces: 10 cm of sand, pebble-top rubber mats, or concrete flooring, each covered with 15 cm of straw. Calving location, lying time, and total time and number of lying bouts on each of the floor types were recorded during 2 periods: precalving (24 to 29 h before calving) and at calving (0 to 5 h before calving). Ten cows calved on sand, 6 on concrete, and 1 on the rubber mat. Lying bouts increased during the hours closest to calving, regardless of flooring. The number of lying bouts did not differ between flooring types precalving but cows had more lying bouts on sand and concrete compared with rubber at calving. Cows spent more time lying down on sand and concrete compared with rubber precalving, but lying times did not differ between treatments at calving. Cows that calved on sand spent more time lying on sand at calving compared with the other 2 flooring types. Cows that calved on concrete did not show a flooring preference at calving. These results indicate that rubber mats are the least preferred by dairy cows in the maternity pens, even when covered with a deep layer of straw. 相似文献

The aim of this experiment was to describe the rising and lying behavior of heifers in the first 5 d after alimentary oligofructose overload to 1) acquire information about consequences of this experimental disease model in terms of animal behavior; and 2) contribute to the evaluation of the influence of disease on cattle welfare. Eight tethered Holstein-Friesian heifers were used and their behavior was observed for 10.5 ± 2.7 hours of light per day. Occurrence of rising and lying behavior and parts thereof were recorded. Clinical and physiological examinations were conducted throughout to confirm presence of ruminal acidosis and lameness. The duration of pre-lying intention movements were increased on d 3 after oligofructose overload compared with d −1 [28 (20 to 40) vs. 13 (10 to 16) s, respectively], and the duration of the total lying sequence was increased on d 1 and 3 compared with the control day [27 (22 to 33) and 36 (25 to 48) vs. 17 (13 to 21) s, respectively]. The frequency and duration of getting up did not differ between days. These results suggest that disease induced by oligofructose overload (i.e., ruminal acidosis and lameness) can affect lying behavior in heifers as shown by increased duration of lying intentions and difficulty in lying down, which may indicate that lying motivation was thwarted, possibly by pain or discomfort. 相似文献

Although taking body temperature by rectal thermometer is the method most commonly used to identify sick cows in the postpartum period, no data on the repeatability of this measure are available. The overall objective of this study was to evaluate variability of rectal temperatures in dairy cows considering different factors (intra- and interinvestigator repeatability, different thermometers, penetration depth into the rectum, and defecation). High coefficients of correlation (r = 0.98) and small differences between values of rectal temperatures (observer A = 39.3 ± 1.0°C and observer B = 39.4 ± 1.0°C) provide evidence that rectal temperature was a repeatable measure in dairy cows. Testing was carried out using 4 different digital thermometers: GLA M750 (GLA Agricultural Electronics, San Luis Obispo, CA), MTI8101 (SES Scala Electronics, Stahnsdorf, Germany), MT1831 (Microlife AG, Widnau, Switzerland) and Domotherm TH1 (Uebe Medical GmbH, Wertheim, Germany). Thermometers were inserted into the rectum to a certain depth (GLA M750 and MTI8101 = 11.5 cm; MT1831 = 8.4 cm; Domotherm TH1 = 7.7 cm) and a measure was finished when a visual or acoustic signal was emitted by the thermometer. The measures could be influenced by the procedure itself (up to 0.5°C), type of thermometer (up to 0.3°C), and the penetration depth (11.5 cm or 6.0 cm in one of the experiments) into the rectum (up to 0.4°C difference between a penetration depth of 11.5 cm and 6.0 cm in one of the experiments). Differences in rectal temperature before and after defecation were minor (<0.1°C). These results indicate that some care is required in generalizing rectal measures of body temperature. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of feeding high-protein distillers dried grains (HPDDG) on rumen degradability, dry matter intake, milk production, and milk composition. Sixteen lactating Holstein cows (12 multiparous and 4 primiparous) averaging 80 ± 14 d in milk were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 crossover design. A portion of forage and all soy-based protein in the control diet were replaced by HPDDG (20% dry matter). Milk production and dry matter intake were recorded daily and averaged for d 19 to 21 of each 21-d period. Milk samples were collected on d 20 to 21 of each period. Milk yield increased with the inclusion of HPDDG (33.4 vs. 31.6 ± 2.13 kg/d), and 3.5% FCM was higher for the ration containing HPDDG (36.3 vs. 33.1 ± 2.24 kg/d). Percentage protein was not affected by treatment (average 3.04 ± 0.08%), but protein yield increased with inclusion of HPDDG (0.95 to 1.00 ± 0.05 kg/d). Milk fat concentration was not different between treatments (average 3.95 ± 0.20%), but fat yield increased for the ration containing HPDDG (1.35 vs. 1.21 ± 0.09 kg/d). Dry matter intake was not affected and averaged 21.9 ± 0.80 kg across treatments. Because of greater milk production, feed conversion was improved by the inclusion of HPDDG (1.47 to 1.73 ± 0.09). Milk urea N was greater for the HPDDG ration than the control (14.5 vs. 12.8 ± 0.67 mg/dL). This research suggests that HPDDG may effectively replace soy-based protein in lactating dairy cow diets. 相似文献

Cortisol has long been used as a marker of the stress response in animals. Cortisol can be analyzed from different media, most notably from the blood, saliva, and feces; however, the collection of cortisol from some of these media requires invasive procedures or excessive handling of the animals. Furthermore, it is not possible to capture long-term increases in circulating concentrations of cortisol from the blood, saliva, or feces. Hair cortisol has been found to be a reliable alternative for measuring chronic stress. With this emerging measure, appropriate sampling methodology must be developed and validated. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of hair color, sampling location, and processing method on cortisol concentrations in hair from lactating black and white Holstein cows (n = 18). Furthermore, we aimed to measure the hair growth rates at different body locations (n = 12) and test hair cortisol levels when resampled over short intervals (n = 37). Both black- and white-colored hair was collected from the shoulder, top line, hip, and tail switch of Holsteins; due to breed characteristics only white hair was harvested from the tail switch. All samples were cleaned with water and isopropanol, and then ground in a ball mill or finely cut with scissors once dry. Cortisol was extracted with methanol before being measured using a commercially available ELISA kit. Concentrations of cortisol were greater in white than in black hair (7.8 ± 1.1 vs. 3.8 ± 1.1 pg/mg). When only white samples were analyzed, hair from the tail switch had more cortisol than hair from the shoulder (11.0 ± 1.2 vs. 6.2 ± 1.2 pg/mg), whereas no difference was found when compared with the hip and top line. Samples ground with a ball mill had greater concentrations of cortisol extracted than those minced with scissors (10.4 ± 1.2 vs. 4.7 ± 1.2 pg/mg). The growth rate of hair was significantly greater at the tail switch compared with the hip and shoulder (0.51 ± 0.05 vs. 0.04 ± 0.05 vs. 0.03 ± 0.05 mm/d). When hair was collected every 3 wk after calving, a tendency was detected for multiparous cows to have greater concentrations of hair cortisol and significantly greater concentrations of cortisol on d 0 and 21 after calving compared with d 42, 84, and 126. In Holsteins, the hair on the tail switch is always white, grows more rapidly than other sites, and is sensitive enough to capture changes in cortisol over intervals as short as 3 wk, making it the ideal location for measuring hair cortisol. 相似文献

Detection of lameness in individual cows is important for the prompt treatment of this painful and production-limiting disease. Current methods for lameness detection involve watching cows walk for several strides. If clinical signs predictive of lameness could be observed more conveniently, as cows are undergoing regularly scheduled examinations while standing, detection levels could increase. The objective of this study was to assess the association between postures observed while cows are standing in stanchions and clinical lameness evaluated by locomotion scoring, and to evaluate the observation of these postures as a test for lameness. The study included 1,243 cows from 4 farms. Cows were observed while standing in stanchions for regularly scheduled management procedures and the presence of arched back and cow-hocked, wide-stance, and favored-limb postures were recorded. The same cows were locomotion-scored as they exited the milking parlor. The proportion of cows observed with arched back and cow-hocked and favored-limb postures increased with increasing severity of lameness (higher locomotion score) but did not increase for the wide-stance posture. For the presence of these postures as a test for lameness (locomotion score ≥3), sensitivity and specificity were 0.63 and 0.64 for back arch, 0.54 and 0.57 for cow hocks, and 0.05 and 0.98 for favored limb. Back-arched, cow-hocked, and favored limb postures were associated with lameness but were not highly sensitive or specific as diagnostic tests. However, observation of back arch may be useful to identify cows needing further examination. 相似文献

Previously, we constructed an in vitro fertilization system for the identification of genes affecting fertility traits in dairy cattle. The efficiency of this system has been demonstrated by the identification of several genes affecting fertilization rate and early embryonic survival. However, to employ these genetic markers in marker- and gene-assisted selection programs, there is a need to validate in vitro results in phenotypic data sets collected in vivo. Thus, the objective of this study was to validate, in a population of Holstein bulls, the fertility trait genes we previously identified in an in vitro system. Estimated relative conception rate (ERCR) data from 222 Holstein bulls were obtained from 5 different artificial insemination companies in the United States. Bulls were genotyped for the genes FGF2, POU1F1, PRL, PRLR, GH, GHR, STAT5A, OPN, and UTMP, and the data were analyzed for association with ERCR using a mixed effects sire model. A stepwise model selection procedure revealed evidence of association with ERCR for FGF2 and STAT5A polymorphisms. The in vivo validation suggests that these genes can be used in gene-assisted selection programs for reproductive performance in dairy cattle. The genotypes found to be associated with low bull fertility in this study have been reported to be associated with high milk composition in previous studies. These findings provide molecular evidence for the antagonistic relationship between milk production and fertility observed for many years in different breeds of dairy cattle. 相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to estimate genetic parameters of milk fatty acid unsaturation indices in Canadian Holsteins. Data were available on milk fatty acid composition of 2,573 Canadian Holstein cows from 46 commercial herds enrolled in the Québec Dairy Production Centre of Expertise, Valacta (Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada). Individual fatty acid percentages (g/100 g of total fatty acids) were determined for each milk sample by gas chromatography. The unsaturation indices were calculated as the ratio of an unsaturated fatty acid to the sum of that unsaturated fatty acid and its corresponding substrate fatty acid, multiplied by 100. A mixed linear model was fitted under REML for the statistical analysis of milk fatty acid unsaturation indices. The statistical model included the fixed effects of parity, age at calving, and stage of lactation, each nested within parity, and the random effects of herd-year-season of calving, animal, and residual. Estimates of heritabilities for the C14, C16, C18, conjugated linoleic acid, and total unsaturation indices were 0.48, 0.25, 0.29, 0.14, and 0.19, respectively. Phenotypic and genetic correlation estimates among unsaturation indices were all positive and ranged from 0.20 to 0.65 and 0.23 to 0.81, respectively. The estimates of heritabilities and genetic correlations for milk fatty acid unsaturation indices suggest that genetic variation exists among cows in milk fatty acid unsaturation, and the proportions of desirable unsaturated fatty acids from a human health point of view may be increased in bovine milk through genetic selection. 相似文献

Postpartum uterine diseases of dairy cows compromise animal welfare and may result in early removal from the herd or impaired reproductive performance. The relationship between poor immune status around calving and uterine diseases is well established; however, that between natural antibodies (NAb) and uterine health has not yet been studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of circulating NAb levels around parturition with puerperal metritis, clinical endometritis, and the intrauterine presence of the Escherichia coli virulence factor FimH. One hundred six pregnant heifers were enrolled; NAb in serum samples collected at 30 ± 3 d prepartum and at 2 ± 1 and 35 ± 3 d in milk (DIM) were measured by ELISA. Puerperal metritis was defined as the presence of fetid, watery, red-brown uterine discharge and rectal temperature >39.5°C at 6 ± 1 DIM. Clinical endometritis was defined as presence of pus in the uterine lavage sample collected at 35 ± 3 DIM. The intrauterine presence of the fimH gene at 2 ± 1 DIM was evaluated by PCR. The overall optical density (wavelength of 650 nm) of ELISA-detected serum NAb was lower for cows diagnosed with puerperal metritis than for cows that did not have puerperal metritis. Additionally, cows diagnosed with clinical endometritis tended to have lower levels of NAb than did cows without clinical endometritis. Finally, FimH-positive cows had lower overall levels of serum NAb compared with FimH-negative cows. In conclusion, NAb detected in serum around parturition was associated with uterine health of dairy cows. 相似文献

Sole hemorrhage and sole ulcers, referred to as sole lesions, are important causes of lameness in dairy cattle. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters of a novel trait reflecting how well cows recovered from sole lesions and the genetic correlation of this trait with overall susceptibility to sole lesions. A cohort of Holstein dairy cows was prospectively enrolled on 4 farms and assessed at 4 timepoints: before calving, immediately after calving, in early lactation, and in late lactation. At each timepoint, sole lesions were recorded at the claw level by veterinary surgeons and used to define 2 binary traits: (1) susceptibility to sole lesions—whether animals were affected with sole lesions at least once during the study or were unaffected at every assessment, and (2) sole lesion recovery—whether sole lesions healed between early and late lactation. Animals were genotyped and pedigree details extracted from the national database. Analyses were conducted with BLUPF90 software in a single-step framework; genetic parameters were estimated from animal threshold models using Gibbs sampling. The genetic correlation between both traits was approximated as the correlation between genomic estimated breeding values, adjusting for their reliabilities. A total of 2,025 animals were used to estimate the genetic parameters of sole lesion susceptibility; 44% of animals recorded a sole lesion at least once during the study period. The heritability of sole lesion susceptibility, on the liability scale, was 0.25 (95% highest density interval = 0.16–0.34). A total of 498 animals were used to estimate the genetic parameters of sole lesion recovery; 71% of animals had recovered between the early and late lactation assessments. The heritability of sole lesion recovery, on the liability scale, was 0.27 (95% highest density interval = 0.02–0.52). The approximate genetic correlation between each trait was ?0.11 (95% confidence interval = ?0.20 to ?0.02). Our results indicate that recovery from sole lesions is heritable. If this finding is corroborated in further studies, it may be possible to use selective breeding to reduce the frequency of chronically lame cows. As sole lesion recovery appears to be weakly genetically related to sole lesion susceptibility, successful genetic improvement of sole lesion recovery would benefit from selection on this trait directly. 相似文献

The objectives of the current study were to describe changes in rumination and feeding behavior around calving. Rumination time, feeding time, and dry matter intake were monitored in 11 freestall-housed cows from 96 h before to 48 h after calving. Data were summarized in 2-h and 24-h periods, adjusting for calving time. Differences between baseline (96 to 24 h before calving) and subsequent 24-h periods were evaluated. Compared with baseline, cows spent, on average, 63 ± 30 min/24 h less time ruminating and 66 ± 16 min/24 h less time feeding in the 24-h period before calving. These behaviors continued to decline during the 24-h period after calving when, compared with baseline, time spent ruminating decreased on average by 133 ± 35 min/24 h and time spent feeding decreased by 82 ± 18 min/24 h. Dry matter intake tended to decrease by 3.8 ± 1.9 kg in the 24-h period before calving but returned to baseline values in the 24-h following calving. Rumination time and time spent feeding started to decline approximately 4 and 8 h before calving, respectively, and increased in the 4 to 6 h following calving. Rumination time and time spent feeding show promise as tools to identify cows close to calving. 相似文献

Whereas whole first-milked colostrum IgG1 variation is documented, the IgG1 difference between the quarter mammary glands of dairy animals is unknown. First colostrum was quarter-collected from healthy udders of 8 multiparous dairy cows, all within 3 h of parturition. Weight of colostrum produced by individual quarters was determined and a sample of each was frozen for subsequent analysis. Immunoglobulin G1 concentration (mg/mL) was measured by ELISA and total mass (g) was calculated. Standard addition method was used to overcome colostrum matrix effects and validate the standard ELISA measures. Analysis of the data showed that cow and quarter (cow) were significantly different in both concentration and total mass per quarter. Analysis of the mean IgG1 concentration of the front and rear quarters showed that this was not different, but the large variation in individual quarters confounds the analysis. This quarter difference finding indicates that each mammary gland develops a different capacity to accumulate precolostrum IgG1, whereas the circulating hormone concentrations that induce colostrogenesis reach the 4 glands similarly. This finding also shows that the variation in quarter colostrum production is a contributor to the vast variation in first milking colostrum IgG1 content. Finally, the data suggests other factors, such as locally acting autocrine or paracrine, epigenetic, or stochasticity, in gene regulation mechanisms may impinge on colostrogenesis capacity. 相似文献

The degree of relatedness was studied in 3 dairy cow populations from Great Britain (GBR), Italy (ITA), and Ireland (IRL) by using cows born from 2003 to 2006. Effective population size, inbreeding coefficient (F), and average relationship in the top and bottom 4,000 cows ranked on a profit index value (PIV) or milk yield evaluations were studied. Average inbreeding was approximately 2% in GBR and ITA, was 1% in IRL, but was slightly more than 2% when the joint pedigree was used. The average F for the joint population was 10 to 15% higher than estimates averaged across the 3 populations, reflecting the increased completeness of pedigree information in the joint pedigree. Effective population size in the joint pedigree was approximately 12% lower than estimates within the individual countries. The average genetic relationships for the top 4,000 PIV cows were not markedly different from those based on milk evaluation in GBR and ITA, but were approximately 2% lower in IRL. This was due to the use of an index with less weight on production traits in IRL compared with GBR and ITA. However, selection of the top 4,000 cows on PIV reduced the degree of relatedness across the 3 countries. The use of common sires accounted for most of the relatedness across the 3 countries, more than did the use of related sires or common foreign dams. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to develop and test a system for automatic washing of the hooves of dairy cows and to evaluate the effect of frequent automatic washing on the prevalence of digital dermatitis (DD). An automatic hoof washer was developed in an experimental dairy herd and tested in 6 commercial dairy herds in 2 experiments (1 and 2). In the experimental herd, automatic hoof washing resulted in cleaner hooves. In experiments 1 and 2, cows were washed after each milking on the left side only, leaving the right side unwashed as a within-cow control. In experiment 1, hooves were washed with a water and 0.4% soap solution. In experiment 2, hooves were washed with water only. In each experiment, DD was scored in a hoof-trimming chute approximately 60 d after the start of hoof washing. Data were analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model. The outcome was the DD status of each leg (DD positive or DD negative). Herd and cow within herd were included as random effects, and treatment (washing or control) was included as a fixed effect. The statistical analyses showed that the odds ratio of having DD was 1.48 in the control leg compared with the washed leg in experiment 1. In experiment 2, the odds ratio of having DD was 1.27 in the control leg compared with the washed leg. We concluded that automatic washing of hooves with water and soap can help decrease the prevalence of DD in commercial dairy herds. 相似文献
