Thermoelectric power generators (TEGs) have received considerable attention in the vehicular waste heat recovery. Large temperature difference between hot-side end and cold-side end of TE modules should be maintained to keep large power generation. However, the scaling-up problem of inevitably temperature drop of exhaust gas along the flow direction of vehicles is introduced when multiple TE modules are assembled. In this work, a three-dimensional fluid–thermal–electric multiphysics model with equivalent properties of TE modules is established. The influencing mechanism of longitudinal vortex generator (LVG) pair number and distribution in the hot-side heat exchanger on the local power generation performance of the TEGs is examined. It is found that the extent of the local power generation enhancement gets smaller or even deteriorates at the downstream TE modules by uniformly increasing the LVG pair number along the flow direction. Hence, to make the heat flux efficiently utilized, a nonuniform segmented enhancement method is used for the hot-side heat exchanger. The results show that compared with the TEG with a uniform heat exchanger or a downstream-denser heat exchanger, the total Seebeck voltage generated by the TEG with an upstream-denser heat exchanger is 28% higher, and its output power is 64.4% higher at the matched load resistance. The TEG with the upstream-denser heat exchanger significantly improves the overall power generation performance without additional pumping power.  相似文献

There is a significant push to increase the output power of thermoelectric generators (TEGs) in order to make them more competitive energy harvesters. The thermal coupling of TEGs has a major impact on the effective temperature gradient across the generator and therefore the power output achieved. The application of micro fluidic heat transfer systems (μHTS) can significantly reduce the thermal contact resistance and thus enhance the TEG's performance. This paper reports on the characterization and optimization of a μTEG integrated with a two layer μHTS. The main advantage of the presented system is the combination of very low heat transfer resistances with small pumping powers in a compact volume. The influence of the most relevant system parameters, i.e. microchannel width, applied flow rate and the μTEG thickness on the system's net output performance are investigated. The dimensions of the μHTS/μTEG system can be optimized for specific temperature application ranges, and the maximum net power can be tracked by adjusting the heat transfer resistance during operation. A system net output power of 126 mW/cm2 was achieved with a module ZT of 0.1 at a fluid flow rate of 0.07 l/min and an applied temperature difference of 95K.It was concluded that for systems with good thermal coupling, the thermoelectric material optimization should focus more on the power factor than on the figure of merit ZT itself, since the influence of the thermal resistance of the TE material is negligible.  相似文献

排气背压对柴油机的动力性能和油耗有着重要的影响,排气背压过大会造成动力性能的损失和油耗的增加,因此,在为柴油机设计排气后处理装置时,要充分考虑排气背压的大小。本文针对水下工作的柴油机,设计了一套排气降温系统,可以使得该柴油机在水下工作时,其排气可以被冷却后直接排向大气,并且其动力性能不受影响,这就要求在设计过程中要使整个排气降温系统的流动阻力尽可能最小。通过试验结果表明:加装该排气降温系统后柴油机输出动力性能良好,无功率和转矩损失;特殊管壳式换热器换热效果良好,能使最高温度为503.4℃的高温烟气降低到39.4℃。本文研究的结果对小型水下动力装置排气降温系统的选择和设计有一定的参考价值。  相似文献

Energy saving and emission reduction of engines were taken seriously, especially for vehicular diesel engines. Exhaust heat recovery based on organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system has been considered as an effective approach for improving engine fuel economy. This article presents the investigation of water or air cooling method for an ORC exhaust heat recovery system on a heavy‐duty truck through simulations. The models of the truck engine and the ORC system were developed in GT suite, and the integration system model was developed in the Simulink environment. The validity of the models was verified experimentally. The performance of the vehicular engine with ORC system using water or air cooling method was comparatively analyzed. The simulation results indicated that the water cooling method is more suitable for the vehicular ORC system than air cooling method. The relation between benefit and penalty of the ORC system and cooling system was discussed. The operating condition of the cooling system was confirmed having significant effects on the combined system performance, especially the fan speed. The performance improvement of the engine with the use of ORC system was further evaluated under different engine operating conditions and ambient temperatures. Lower ambient temperature had positive effects on the engine fuel economy. The mass flow rate of exhaust gas for heat recovery should be regulated for better performance under high ambient temperature.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical model of an exhaust heat recovery system for a high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HTPEMFC) stack. The system is designed as thermoelectric generators (TEGs) sandwiched in the walls of a compact plate-fin heat exchanger. Its model is based on a finite-element approach. On each discretized segment, fluid properties, heat transfer process and TEG performance are locally calculated for higher model precision. To benefit both the system design and fabrication, the way to model TEG modules is herein reconsidered; a database of commercialized compact plate-fin heat exchangers is adopted. Then the model is validated against experimental data and the main variables are identified by means of a sensitivity analysis. Finally, the system configuration is optimized for recovering heat from the exhaust gas. The results exhibit the crucial importance of the model accuracy and the optimization on system configuration. Future studies will concentrate on heat exchanger structures.  相似文献

Recovering the dissipated heat from exhaust is a useful means of reducing the energy consumption level as well as cutting down on environmental pollution. An efficient technique for recovering this lost heat is the use of thermoelectric generators, which directly convert the dissipated heat into useful electrical energy. In this paper, a whole thermoelectric generator system installed on the exhaust pipe of a vehicle has been modeled, and the effects of thermal parameters on the output of this thermoelectric generator have been measured and evaluated by means of sensitivity analysis. The E‐Fast sensitivity analysis method has been used in this study. The sensitivity analysis results indicate that, among the thermal parameters examined, the temperature of gases entering the heat sink installed at exhaust pipe outlet () has the greatest influence (37%) and the flow rate of fluid entering the heatsink installed on the cold side of thermoelectric modules () has the second greatest influence (17%) on the output power of the considered thermoelectric generator. By using these results, the best cases of hot exhaust gases from various industries and vehicles with the highest potential of recovering the dissipated energy and heat from them by thermoelectric generators can be identified.  相似文献

An experiment has been performed to investigate the cooling performance of a thermoelectric ceiling cooling panel (TE‐CCP). The TE‐CCP was composed of 36 TE modules. The cold side of the TE modules was fixed to an aluminum ceiling panel to cool a test chamber of 4.5 m3 volume, while a copper heat exchanger with circulating cooling water at the hot side of the TE modules was used for heat release. Tests were conducted using various system parameters. It was found that the cooling performance of the system depended on the electrical supply, cooling water temperature and flow rate through the heat exchanger. A suitable condition occurred at 1.5 A of current flow with a corresponding cooling capacity of 289.4 W which gives the coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.75 with an average indoor temperature of 27°C. Using thermal comfort test data in literature for small air movements under radiant cooling ceilings, results from the experiments show that thermal comfort could be obtained with the TE‐CCP system. In order to reduce the costs generated by the hydrogen solid storage tank's accessories such as the heat exchanger, this work was carried out. It shows thermal and electrical investigations of transient hydrogen (H2) solid storage in a tank filled with porous medium (LaNi5) to activate a potential PEM automotive fuel cell. For this purpose, we use a novel heat exchanger with a heat sink combined with thermoelectric modules (TEMs). We realize a simulation that helps us verify if thermoelectric exchanger will be an alternative to the conventional ones. The main results are that a thermoelectric cooler and heater with 127 couples of semiconductors coupled with 19 fins heat sink could be used during the reversible hydrogen solid storage. Also, results show that we can avoid the water freezing at negative temperatures when using a conventional heat exchanger by using TEM during hydrogen absorption. Finally, during the endothermic desorption of the hydrogen, TEG use can avoid boiling water used in the heating system. Also, the hydrogen tank will be lighter and compact without fins and water tubes.  相似文献

Enhancement in heat transfer of the cold side is vital to amplify the performance of a thermoelectric generator (TEG). With enriched thermophysical properties of nanofluids, significant improvement in heat transfer process can be obtained. The current study concerns the performance comparison of an automobile waste heat recovery system with EG‐water (EG‐W) mixture, ZnO, and SiO2 nanofluid as coolants for the TEG system. The effects on performance parameters, that is, circuit voltage, conversion efficiency, and output power with exhaust inlet temperature, the total area of TEG, Reynolds number, and particle concentration of nanofluids for the TEG system have been investigated. A detailed performance analysis revealed an increase in voltage, power output, and conversion efficiency of the TEG system with SiO 2 nanofluid, followed by ZnO and EG‐W coolants. The electric power and conversion efficiency for SiO 2 nanofluid at an exhaust inlet temperature of 500K were enhanced by 11.80% and 11.39% respectively, in comparison with EG‐W coolants. Moreover, the model speculates that an optimal total area of TEGs exists for the maximum power output of the system. With SiO 2 nanofluid as a coolant, the total area of TEGs can be diminished by up to 34% as compared with EG‐W, which brings significant convenience for the placement of TEGs and reduces the cost of the TEG system.  相似文献

Waste heat recovery helps reduce energy consumption, decreases carbon emissions, and enhances sustainable energy development. In China, energy-intensive industries dominate the industrial sector and have significant potential for waste heat recovery. We propose a novel waste heat recovery system assisted by a heat pipe and thermoelectric generator (TEG) namely, heat pipe TEG (HPTEG),to simultaneously recover waste heat and achieve electricity generation. Moreover, the HPTEG provides a good approach to bridging the mismatch between energy supply and demand. Based on the technical reserve on high-temperature heat pipe manufacturing and TEG device integration, a laboratory-scale HPTEG prototype was established to investigate the coupling performances of the heat pipes and TEGs. Static energy conversion and passive thermal transport were achieved with the assistance of skutterudite TEGs and potassium heat pipes. Based on the HPTEG prototype, the heat transfer and the thermoelectric conversion performances were investigated. Potassium heat pipes exhibited excellent heat transfer performance with 95% thermal efficiency. The isothermality of such a heat pipe was excellent, and the heat pipe temperature gradient was within 15°C. The TEG's thermoelectric conversion efficiency of 7.5% and HPTEG's prototype system thermoelectric conversion efficiency of 6.2% were achieved. When the TEG hot surface temperature reached 625°C, the maximum electrical output power of the TEG peaked at 183.2 W, and the open-circuit voltage reached 42.2 V. The high performances of the HPTEG prototype demonstrated the potential of the HPTEG for use in engineering applications.  相似文献

The thermoelectric (TE) solar air collector, sometimes known as the hybrid solar collector, generates both thermal and electrical energies simultaneously. A double-pass TE solar air collector has been developed and tested. The TE solar collector was composed of transparent glass, air gap, an absorber plate, thermoelectric modules and rectangular fin heat sink. The incident solar radiation heats up the absorber plate so that a temperature difference is created between the thermoelectric modules that generates a direct current. Only a small part of the absorbed solar radiation is converted to electricity, while the rest increases the temperature of the absorber plate. The ambient air flows through the heat sink located in the lower channel to gain heat. The heated air then flows to the upper channel where it receives additional heating from the absorber plate. Improvements to the thermal and overall efficiencies of the system can be achieved by the use of the double-pass collector system and TE technology. Results show that the thermal efficiency increases as the air flow rate increases. Meanwhile, the electrical power output and the conversion efficiency depend on the temperature difference between the hot and cold side of the TE modules. At a temperature difference of 22.8 °C, the unit achieved a power output of 2.13 W and the conversion efficiency of 6.17%. Therefore, the proposed TE solar collector concept is anticipated to contribute to wider applications of the TE hybrid systems due to the increased overall efficiency.  相似文献

A new type of thermoelectric generator (TEG) system based on liquid metal which serves to harvest and transport waste heat, is proposed in this paper. To demonstrate the feasibility of the new TEG system, an experimental prototype which combined commercially available thermoelectric (TE) modules with the electromagnetic pump was set up. Output voltage from TE modules and temperature changes of the main parts (waste heat source, liquid metal heating plate, water-cooling plates I and II) of the liquid metal based TEG system were experimentally measured, as well as the flow rate of cooling water and the load resistance. It was shown that the maximum open-circuit voltage of 34.7 V was obtained when the temperature of the waste heat source was 195.9 °C and the temperature gap between liquid metal heating plate and cooling-water plates was nearly 100 °C. These experimental results obviously verify that using liquid metal based TEG system for waste heat recovery is highly feasible. In addition, the TEG system performance is discussed and a calculated efficiency of 2% in the whole TEG system is obtained. Possible suggestions to further improve this type of generator in the future are given.  相似文献

This article reports an analytical investigation of the optimal heat exchanger allocation and the corresponding efficiency for maximum power output of a Carnot-like heat engine. To mimic a real engine, the generalized power law for the resistance in heat transfer external to the engine, relaxation effect in heat transfer, bypass heat leak and finally internal irreversibility of the power producing compartment of the engine is taken into consideration. From the engineering perspective the temperature ratio of the heat source and sink as well as to that of hot end and cold side of the working fluid is considered not to be the controllable parameters. A parametric study is presented for the other possible controllable variables. Selection of a power law over a linear model has a significant effect on the optimal heat exchanger allocation for maximum power output and the corresponding efficiency. For a higher degree of relaxation effect the drop in the maximum power efficiency is prominent along with the shift of equipartitioned allocation of heat exchanger inventory. Bypass heat leak and internal irreversibility exhibits relatively less pronounced effects on the maximum power efficiency and on the optimal heat exchanger allocation. Thus the endoreversible formulation of thermodynamic model is physically realistic. Strikingly when the optimal allocation of the heat exchanger inventory obeys the principle of equipartition in macroscopic organization for the linear law of the external heat resistance, the thermal efficiency appears to assume the representative documented value. Hence the linear model due to Bejan is also capable of capturing the essential features of a real power plant.  相似文献

To meet stringent vehicular exhaust emission norms worldwide, several exhaust pre-treatment and post-treatment techniques have been employed in modern engines. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a pre-treatment technique, which is being used widely to reduce and control the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emission from diesel engines. EGR controls the NOx because it lowers oxygen concentration and flame temperature of the working fluid in the combustion chamber. However, the use of EGR leads to a trade-off in terms of soot emissions. Higher soot generated by EGR leads to long-term usage problems inside the engines such as higher carbon deposits, lubricating oil degradation and enhanced engine wear. Present experimental study has been carried out to investigate the effect of EGR on soot deposits, and wear of vital engine parts, especially piston rings, apart from performance and emissions in a two cylinder, air cooled, constant speed direct injection diesel engine, which is typically used in agricultural farm machinery and decentralized captive power generation. Such engines are normally not operated with EGR. The experiments were carried out to experimentally evaluate the performance and emissions for different EGR rates of the engine. Emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), NOx, carbon monoxide (CO), exhaust gas temperature, and smoke opacity of the exhaust gas etc. were measured. Performance parameters such as thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) were calculated. Reduction in NOx and exhaust gas temperature were observed but emissions of particulate matter (PM), HC, and CO were found to have increased with usage of EGR. The engine was operated for 96 h in normal running conditions and the deposits on vital engine parts were assessed. The engine was again operated for 96 h with EGR and similar observations were recorded. Higher carbon deposits were observed on the engine parts operating with EGR. Higher wear of piston rings was also observed for engine operated with EGR.  相似文献

Currently, combustion-based micro power devices encounter the problem of low conversion efficiency. A miniaturized power generation system cascade utilizing thermal energy of a micro-combustor is proposed, because thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells and thermoelectric (TE) modules work at different temperature levels. The system consists of a planar micro-combustor with a bended extension at the exit, two GaSb TPV modules to convert high temperature thermal radiation and two Bi–Te based TE modules attached to the bended extension to harness medium temperature thermal energy. The mathematical modelling approach to quantify the power output and conversion efficiency is systematically presented. The modelling results show that the integration of the TE modules could significantly improve the system efficiency. When burning the H2/air mixture, the overall system efficiency could reach 2.5% under the flow condition of U0 = 3 m/s and Φ = 1.0. Finally, measures for better thermal management to further enhance the conversion efficiency are discussed.  相似文献

设计了一种针对高温烟气的圆筒式温差发电装置,在装置中设置分流桶增强烟气侧的换热效果。利用Ansys Fluent软件对装置的温度场、速度场及排气压降进行仿真模拟,分析了不同分流桶的桶直径、端盖孔直径和分流孔直径对热电模块冷热端温度分布的影响。仿真结果表明:温差发电系统集热器通道中设置分流桶可以实现高效温差发电,分流桶端盖未开孔时装置的换热效果优于端盖开孔结构;适当减小分流孔直径或增大分流桶直径会提升热电模块的冷热端温差,分流孔直径为2 mm时的换热效果最优,分流桶直径过大会使热电模块温度分布及温差的均匀性降低;系统烟气压降会随着分流孔直径的增大或分流桶直径的减小而降低。  相似文献

In this case study, a system to recover waste heat comprised 24 thermoelectric generators (TEG) to convert heat from the exhaust pipe of an automobile to electrical energy has been constructed. Simulations and experiments for the thermoelectric module in this system are undertaken to assess the feasibility of these applications. A slopping block is designed on the basis of simulation results to uniform the interior thermal field that improves the performance of TEG modules. Besides simulations, the system is designed and assembled. Measurements followed the connection of the system to the middle of an exhaust pipe. Open circuit voltage and maximum power output of the system are characterized as a function of temperature difference. Through these simulations and experiments, the power generated with a commercial TEG module is presented. Overview this case study and our previous work, the results establish the fundamental development of low-temperature waste heat thermoelectric generator system that enhances the TEG efficiency for vehicles.  相似文献
