Li‐ion cells are used for energy storage and conversion in electric vehicles and a variety of consumer devices such as hoverboards. Performance and safety of such devices are severely affected by overheating of Li‐ion cells in aggressive operating conditions. Multiple recent fires and accidents in hoverboards are known to have originated in the battery pack of the hoverboard. While thermal analysis and measurements have been carried out extensively on large battery packs for electric vehicles, there is relatively lesser research on smaller devices such as hoverboards, where the extremely limited thermal management design space and the critical importance of user safety result in severe thermal management challenges. This paper presents experimental measurements and numerical analysis of a novel approach for thermal management of the battery pack of a hoverboard. Measurements indicate that temperature rise in cells in the pack can be as large as 30°C at 4C discharge rate, which, although unlikely to be a standard discharge rate, may result from a malfunction or accident. A novel thermal management approach is investigated, wherein careful utilization of air flow generated by hoverboard motion is shown to result in significant temperature reduction. Measurements also indicate the key role of the metal housing around the battery pack in thermal management. Measurements are found to be in good agreement with finite element simulations, which indicate that the battery pack can be cooled as effectively in presence of a perforated metal casing as without the casing at all. Experimental data and simulation model presented here offer critical insights into the design of hoverboard thermal management and may result in safer, high performance hoverboard battery packs.  相似文献

In this paper, a passive technique is examined by adding an inlet plenum to reduce the maximum temperature and improve temperature uniformity in a simple battery pack. The inlet plenum changes the direction of the flow and dramatically reduces the issues of air recirculation and dead‐air regions between adjacent cells. The dimensions of the plenum and Reynolds number were optimized to enhance cooling and temperature uniformity at the cell and pack level. The results indicated that by increasing the Reynolds number to 7440, the maximum temperature decreased by 18.3% and the temperature uniformity increased 54.6%. However, there was no significant change in the maximum temperature and temperature uniformity beyond the Reynolds number of 7440. The developed battery pack achieved the desired temperature uniformity at the cell and pack level to less than 5°C.  相似文献

Temperature affects the performance of electric vehicle battery. To solve this problem, micro heat pipe arrays are utilized in a thermal management system that cools and heats battery modules. In the present study, the heat generation of a battery module during a charge‐discharge cycle under a constant current of 36 A (2C) was computed. Then, the cooling area of the condenser was calculated and experimentally validated. At rates of 1C and 2C, the thermal management system effectively reduced the temperature of the module to less than 40°C, and the temperature difference was controlled less than 5°C between battery surfaces of the module. A heating plate with 30‐W power effectively improved charge performance at low temperature within a short heating time and with uniform temperature distribution. Charge capacity obviously increased after heating when battery temperature was below 0°C. This study presents a new way to enhance the stability and safety of a battery module during the continuous charge‐discharge cycle at high temperatures and low temperatures accordingly.

State evaluation of battery pack is essential for battery management but laborious when dealing with massive information of cells within the pack. A graphical model for evaluating the status of series‐connected Li‐ion battery pack is established to release the burden. The model is founded by a 2D diagram, with the electric quantity “E” and the capacity “Q” as its axes, therefore called by the “EQ diagram.” The new graphical diagram presents the dynamics of cell variations in a linear way, thereby benefiting the design and management of battery pack, including (1) quantifying the cell variations by region, (2) illustrating the evolution of cell variations during aging, (3) guiding the estimation of pack states considering algorithm error in cell states, and (4) solving the balancing problem. The experimental results conform to the theoretical analysis, indicating that the EQ diagram will be pervasively applied in the design and management of series‐connected battery pack. Moreover, the EQ diagram is suitable for education on the basics of a battery pack, because it is a graphical model.  相似文献

High‐power applications of lithium‐ion batteries require efficient thermal management systems. In this work, a lumped capacitance heat transfer model is developed in conjunction with a flow network approach to study performance of a commercial‐size lithium‐ion battery pack, under various design and operating conditions of a thermal management system. In order to assess the battery thermal management system, capabilities of air, silicone oil, and water are examined as three potential coolant fluids. Different flow configurations are considered, and temperature dispersions, cell‐averaged voltage distributions, and parasitic losses due to the fan/pump power demand are calculated. It is found that application of a coolant with an appropriate viscosity and heat capacity, such as water, in conjunction with a flow configuration with more than one inlet will result in uniform temperature and voltage distributions in the battery pack while keeping the power requirement at low, acceptable levels. Simulation results are presented and compared with literature for model validation and to show the superior capability of the proposed battery pack design methodology. Thermal management of Li‐ion cells is an important technological problem for energy conversion and storage. Effective dissipation of heat generated during the operation of a Li‐ion cell is critical to ensure safety and performance. In this paper, thermal performance of a cylindrical Li‐ion cell with an axial channel for coolant flow is analyzed. Analytical expressions are derived for steady‐state and transient temperature fields in the cell. The analytical models are in excellent agreement with finite‐element simulation results. The dependence of the temperature field on various geometrical and thermal characteristics of the cell is analyzed. It is shown that coolant flow through even a very small diameter axial channel results in significant thermal benefit. The trade‐off between thermal benefit and reduction in cell volume, and hence capacity due to the axial channel, is analyzed. The effect of axial cooling on geometrical design of the cell, and transient thermal performance during a discharge process, is also analyzed. Results presented in this paper are expected to aid in the development of effective cooling techniques for Li‐ion cells based on axial cooling. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper aims to research the thermal power of lithium‐ion cell with different operating conditions. A 55‐Ah lithium‐ion cell is selected as the research object. Experiment and simulation are chosen as the methods to research the temperature distribution and thermal power of the cell under different conditions. Combining with the thermal power of cells, this paper also researches the heat dissipation performance of battery pack under different operation conditions. The results indicated that average thermal power of a 55‐Ah lithium‐ion cell decreases along with the increase of ambient temperature and the decrease of state of charge and charge and discharge rates. The results achieved through simulation and experiment are consistent, so simulation could be used to research the temperature distribution of cell during charge and discharge. As considering the longitudinal battery pack with steady analysis, high temperature area is in the centre, and the temperature of air inlet is relatively low. The airflow mostly passes the top of battery pack but not through both sides. As considering the longitudinal battery pack with transient analysis, the temperature rise of battery pack is evidently higher than the inner temperature difference by studying three operating conditions (sustained deceleration, sustained acceleration and pulsed discharge). The curves of temperature rise and inner temperature difference rise along with sustained acceleration of the electric vehicle; therefore, even if the electric vehicle begins to decelerate, the fan must still work until the temperature of battery pack decreases. Then, the references are given for researching thermal characteristic during charge and discharge of the cell and the heat dissipation analysis of battery pack. We investigate the effects of thermally sensitive binder (TSB) on the temperature increase of lithium‐ion battery (LIB) coin cell subjected to severe mechanical abuse. The TSB is poly(vinylidenefluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF‐HFP), similar to conventional poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) binder but with a significant hexafluoropropylene (HFP) content. The testing data show that by using TSB, the peak temperature increase of nail‐penetrated LIB coin cell can be reduced by 20% to 40%, attributed to the softening of TSB that begins from ~80°C. The cycling performance of the LIB cells is also characterized. This research sheds light on the development of thermal‐runaway mitigation techniques.  相似文献

The higher specific energy leads to more heat generation of a battery, which affects the performance and cycle life of a battery and even results in some security problems. In this paper, the capacity calibration, Hybrid Pulse Power Characteristic (HPPC), constant current (dis)charging, and entropy heat coefficient tests of chosen 11‐Ah lithium‐ion batteries are carried out. The entropy heat coefficient increases firstly and then decreases with the increase of the depth of discharge (DOD) and reaches the maximum value near 50% DOD. An electrochemical‐thermal coupled model of the chosen battery is established and then verified by the tests. The simulation voltage and temperature trends are in agreement with the test results. The maximum voltage and temperature error is within 2.06% and 0.4°C, respectively. Based on the established model, the effects of adjustable parameters on electrochemical characteristic are systematically studied. Results show that the average current density, the thickness of the positive electrode, the initial and maximum lithium concentration of the positive electrode, and the radius of the positive electrode particle have great influence on battery capacity and voltage. In addition, the influence degree of the internal resistance of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, the thickness of negative electrode, and the initial and maximum lithium concentration of the negative electrode on the capacity and voltage is associated with certain constraints. Meanwhile, the influences of adjustable parameters related to thermal characteristic are also systematically analyzed. Results show that the average current density, the convective heat transfer coefficient, the thickness, and the maximum lithium concentration of the positive electrode have great influence on the temperature rise. Besides, the uniformity of the temperature distribution deteriorates with the increase of the convective heat transfer coefficient.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to simulate an air‐cooling panel system for passive decay heat removal from a high‐temperature gas‐cooled reactor to investigate the performance of decay heat removal and the temperature distributions of components of the system. The experimental apparatus consisted of a pressure vessel 1 m wide and 3 m high. Nineteen simulated standpipes containing heaters with a maximum heating rate of 100 kW simulated residual heat of the core, and the cooling panels surrounded the pressure vessel. An analytical code (THANPACST2) was applied to the experimental data to investigate the validity of the analytical method and the model proposed. Under the conditions of helium gas at a pressure of 0.64 MPa and temperature of 514 °C in the pressure vessel, the predicted temperature distribution in the pressure vessel was estimated and was within ?10 to +50 °C as compared to the experimental data. The analysis indicated that the heat transferred to the cooling panel was 15.4% less than the experimental value. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The performance of Li‐ion battery depends on the temperature. Active liquid cooling system can keep the battery temperature within an optimal range, but the system itself consumes energy. This paper reported the experimental work on the thermal performance of liquid cooling system for the battery module under different cooling schemes. It was hoped that energy consumption could be reduced as much as possible. Meanwhile, liquid cooling system could provide effective cooling for the battery module. Two identical real battery modules including 18 cylindrical cells (with and without cooling system) were manufactured for the validity of comparison. The 2 battery modules discharged at the discharge rates of 1C and 1.5C. Charge and discharge cycle test was also carried out. The results indicated that a simple hysteresis control cooling scheme could reduce the energy consumption effectively. The energy consumption was saved by 83.2% and 49% at the discharge rates of 1C and 1.5C, respectively. Meanwhile, the temperature of battery module was still kept within the optimal range. The maximum temperature appeared on different cells in the battery module during the process of charge and discharge. Thus, the temperature dynamic comparison mechanism was very necessary.  相似文献

In the recent years, significant developments in the electric batteries have made them one of the most promising storage technologies for electrical energy. Among the various rechargeable batteries that are developed, lithium ion batteries stand out due to their capability of storing more energy per unit mass, low discharge rate, low weight, and lack of a memory effect. The advantages that batteries offer have promoted the development of the electric and hybrid electric vehicles. However, during charging and discharging processes, batteries generate heat. If this heat is not removed quickly, the battery temperature will rise, resulting in safety concerns and performance degradation. Thermal management systems are developed to maintain the temperature of the battery within the optimum operation range. This review paper focuses on novel battery thermal management systems (BTMSs). Air, liquid, phase change material, and pool‐based BTMSs are considered. Air‐based thermal management systems are discussed first. Liquid cooling systems and phase change‐based systems are discussed subsequently, and then the recently proposed evaporating pool‐based thermal management system is considered.  相似文献

Due to the requirement of the battery for the thermal management system, based on the coupling relationship between the velocity field and the thermal flow field of the field synergy principle, the flow paths of the forced air cooling system for different battery packs were analyzed. First, the thermodynamic parameters of the battery were collected through experiments and verified by simulation. Secondly, based on the collected thermodynamic parameters of the battery, the heat generation model of the battery, the heat conduction model of the gas, and the coupled heat dissipation model of the battery and air were established. Determine the boundary conditions, calculation methods and evaluation indicators required for simulation; Finally, based on four different driving conditions, the forced air cooling performance of the double “U” shape duct and double “1” type duct is simulated. Through the analysis of the results, the dual “U” air ducts have a more heat dissipation effect on the battery pack than the double “1” shape duct. The results conform to the definition of the field synergy principle for the coupling relationship between the velocity field and the heat flow field. Then research provide references for the design of battery packs and matching of cooling systems.  相似文献

Nanofluids with high thermal conductivity coefficient are introduced to the thermal management system of power battery packs for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Two typical cooling structures of cylindrical and square battery packs are described, and their flow models are established. By similarity transformations, the nonlinear system of partial differential equations is reduced and then solved numerically by the shooting method. The heat transfer properties of three types of nanofluids, that is, CuO‐EG, Al2O3‐EG, TiO2‐EG, are analyzed in detail. It is found that CuO‐EG nanofluid is the best coolant for the cylindrical battery pack, whereas Al2O3‐EG nanofluid is the best choice for square battery pack cooling.  相似文献

Large amount of heat generated during an external short circuit (ESC) process may cause battery safety events. An experimental platform is established to explore the battery electrothermal characteristics during ESC faults. For 18650‐type nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) batteries, ESC fault tests of different initial state of charge (SOC) values, different external resistances, or different ambient temperatures are carried out. The test case of a smaller external resistance is characterized by a shorter ESC duration with a faster cell temperature rise, whereas the case of a larger external resistance will last for a longer duration, discharge more electricity, and terminate in a slightly higher temperature. The tested batteries of high initial SOCs generally have higher temperature rise rates, smoother changes at the output current/voltage curves, but a smaller discharged capacity. The batteries of low initial SOCs can be overdischarged by the ESC operations. At low temperatures, say 0°C, the ESC process outputs much less electricity than the process at high temperatures, eg, 30°C. The initial low temperature has little effect on reducing the battery overheat due to ESC operations. The battery thermal behavior is of hysteresis property; analysis of heat generations reveals the subsequent increase of battery surface temperature after the completion of ESC discharge is due to the battery material abusive reaction heats. It is found from analytical and numerical analyses that there can have approximately 30°C temperature difference between the battery core and its surface during ESC operations. The interruption of ESC operation is very probably caused by the high battery core temperature, which leads to the destruction of solid‐electrolyte interface (SEI) film.  相似文献

Thermal issues associated with electric vehicle battery packs can significantly affect performance and life cycle. Fundamental heat transfer principles and performance characteristics of commercial lithium‐ion battery are used to predict the temperature distributions in a typical battery pack under a range of discharge conditions. Various cooling strategies are implemented to examine the relationship between battery thermal behavior and design parameters. By studying the effect of cooling conditions and pack configuration on battery temperature, information is obtained as to how to maintain operating temperature by designing proper battery configuration and choosing proper cooling systems. It was found that a cooling strategy based on distributed forced convection is an efficient, cost‐effective method which can provide uniform temperature and voltage distributions within the battery pack at various discharge rates. The effect of physical and chemical properties on the performance of both positive and negative electrodes is studied for lithium‐ion (Li‐ion) batteries. These properties include the lithium diffusivity in the active electrode material, the electrical conductivity of the electrode, and the reaction rate constant at electrode active sites. The specific energy and power of the cells are determined at various discharge rates for electrodes with different properties. In addition, this study is conducted across various cell design cases. The results reveal that at moderate discharge rates, lithium diffusivity in the active negative‐electrode material has the highest impact on cell performance. The specific energy and power of the cell are improved ~11% by increasing the lithium diffusivity in the active negative‐electrode material by one order of magnitude. Around 4% improvement in the cell performance is achieved by increasing the reaction rate constant at the active sites of either electrodes by one order of magnitude. This article presents an electro‐thermal model of a stack of three lithium ion batteries for automotive applications. This tool can help to predict thermal behaviour of battery cells inside a stack. The open source software OpenFOAM provides the possibility to add heat generation because of Joule losses in a CFD model. Heat sources are introduced at the connectors and are calculated as a function of battery discharge current and internal resistance. The internal resistance is described in function of temperature. Simulation results are validated against experimental results with regard to cooling air flow field characteristic and thermal behaviour of the cell surface. The validation shows that the simulation is capable to anticipate air flow field characteristics inside the battery box. It also predicts correctly the thermal behaviour of the battery cells for various discharge rates and different cooling system conditions. The simulation supports the observation that batteries have a higher temperature close to the connectors and that the temperature increase depends highly on discharge rate and cooling system conditions.
