Convergence has more than ever been a central issue for fixed and mobile operators throughout the world and is considered to be the next big step in the evolution of telecommunication networks. Convergence opens new market opportunities and competition among network operators and above all offers enhanced user experience. Multimode handsets and the proliferation of terminals and access technologies are generating increasing demands for solutions that enable convergence, seamless handover, and transparent service delivery across heterogeneous access networks. Different strategies are available for operators, depending on the services they intend to deliver to their customers, from basic commercial convergence limited to unified billing for Fixed/Mobile/Internet up to in-dept network convergence covering new applications and services. This article surveys different technologies which offer seamless handover and converged access to mobile voice, video, and data services. It provides first the different network parts involved in defining the operator global convergence strategy and then surveys different technologies which achieve this step-by-step convergence. We present the main features of these technologies and discuss their limitations and potentials to enable convergence in heterogeneous networks. We also provide a personal stance as to the emergence of these technologies and our vision towards the long term converged telecommunication networks.  相似文献

It involves integrally developing telecom networks and Internet businesses through the convergence of their instant news and social networking services. Some background, benefits for telecom operators, and possible challenges are analyzed. IPTV与目前的3个运营网(有线电视网、Internet和电信网)及其业务直接相关。但不同运营商对IPTV业务有不同定位。电信运营商认为IPTV业务体现于电视节目在IP网中的组织和传送形式,有线电视网络运营商认为IPTV业务是利用有线电视网来提供数字电视节目和电视节目以外的信息服务。由于IPTV业务分为广播业务和交互型业务两大类,支撑这两类业务的承载网也相应地分别采用单向广播网和双向交互网,因而在承载网层很难融合。融合工作将在业务层发生,即充分利用已经存在的两个承载网来经济、高效地发展业务。IPTV中既拥有广播型业务,又拥有组播型业务,还拥有交互型业务,将是三网融合的开端。  相似文献

Enterprises are increasingly using virtual private networks to interconnect remote sites. Traditionally, service providers have used ATM core networks to deliver layer 2 services such as frame relay, ATM, or TDM private lines, which enterprise customers have then used to build their corporate network infrastructure. Such services account for the majority of data service revenues today. However, pressure has increased on service providers to combine increased flexibility with reduced costs in the context of a highly dynamic telecommunications market. Service providers also need to generate new revenues from their IP network infrastructure, through new opportunities such as IP VPNs and virtual private LAN services, while simultaneously achieving operational efficiencies through the convergence of all of their services on a common MPLS backbone. New access and metro network technologies, such as Ethernet, are also emerging that can be used to deliver these new services to enterprise customers alongside ATM and frame relay access. This must be achieved while also supporting existing technologies such as ATM, which continue to deliver highly profitable services. This article discusses the technical challenges in meeting the often conflicting requirements of delivering both traditional layer 2 services and new layer 3 services on a converged MPLS network. We show how both network and service interworking are required, and how these must operate at the user, control, and management planes to enable profitable services to be delivered over the new converged network. The different solutions being defined in the standards bodies are described, and the distinct scenarios they address are explained.  相似文献

The exploitation of third-generation mobile networks in Europe may be challenged by the deployment of so-called Alternative Wireless Technologies (AWTs). This article presents an overview of the availability and usage of AWTs in the 25 EU member states. It identifies the main drivers and bottlenecks for AWTs and analyses to which extent established mobile operators are active in this market. The article concludes that the convergence and integration of cellular technologies and AWTs is high on the telecommunications industry’s agenda, implying a gradual shift in business models for mobile operators towards mobile service providers that manage network heterogeneity and complexity on behalf of the user.  相似文献

Services supported by asynchronous transfer mode account for the majority of data and Internet service revenues generated by carrier networks today. This is based on ATM's ability to support high availability services with quality of service. However, the influences of the Internet and a highly dynamic telecommunications market have raised demands for increased flexibility while controlling costs. Therefore, future carrier networks are likely to continue to be based on established technologies, such as ATM, as well as IP. In many cases, this is achieved through maintaining separate ATM and IP core networks, with the IP network supporting Internet services, while the ATM network continues to support guaranteed services such as private lines, broadband access, and video. In some cases, however, it can be advantageous for a carrier to transport segments of their ATM network over their IP network core; for example, to transport ATM traffic currently carried on leased facilities onto an IP network where the service provider owns the facilities. Developments in IP and MPLS-based traffic engineering and QoS may increase the ability of IP-based networks to support ATM services using MPLS. This article provides an overview of approaches enabling a network based on MPLS that naturally supports IP services to also support ATM services. The drivers and requirements for convergence on an IP/MPLS core network are presented, followed by an overview of the different approaches and associated challenges currently being debated in the standards bodies.  相似文献

The CATV network operators hope to offer digital services and evolve their networks to full service networks. There are many hurdles for them at the moment in the transition to a digital network and digital service offering from the current analog-based technology. Key to the success of the transition will be a well-integrated and capable management system to allow CATV operators and service providers to control the network as well as the services they will offer. The CATV operators need to agree on a common data communication infrastructure and plan how their new digital services will be offered to subscribers without disrupting the current customer base of analog service users. The choice of network technology and data communication protocols will have a strong influence on the network management technology chosen. A vital element for the provision of a common open communication architecture as well as for the purposes of network management is that the IP is used. The adoption of existing standards is vital in order to establish a fast route to open network management for CATV networks. It is possible that CATV operators and service providers will have to integrate existing SNMP management systems and TMN/OSI management, with newer integrated service management systems based on TINA and implemented on a CORBA platform. There is a strong need to address security issues before any of these technologies can be deployed for service. There is currently investment (deployed systems and research) which uses each of the technologies mentioned, so these technologies will need to coexist. This article highlights the differences between the North American and European network architectures, and outlines the European network and network management scenario. Governmental policies can significantly affect the social adoption of services offered by communication technology providers and competition between service providers. Following the implementation of several policies by the Korean government and mobile network operators’ promotion of mobile handset bundling, consumer adoption rates of the latest mobile phone and communications services have been higher in Korea than in other countries. Mobile handset bundling provides consumers the bundled sale of mobile phones and services, but this practice can restrict consumers’ choice of services and limit competition among service providers. This study analyses this ambivalent effect of bundling by mobile network operators (MNOs) and evaluates the outcomes of the Korean government policies (2011–14) using market statistics. Our results highlight that the policies have produced changes in market share but the government needs to promote service differentiation among providers.  相似文献

Mobile telephony and the Internet are the fastest growing businesses in the telecommunications market. This is why most operators and service providers are looking after the development of new services in both sectors, and newcomers are expected to enter the arena. The mobile operators foresee an increasing share of their revenues coming from new data services, while Internet service providers are attracted to wireless technology and mobility services both to reduce costs within the last-mile segment and to enrich their market share, providing ubiquitous access to the Internet and corporate intranets. In this scenario several wireless overlay networks will coexist, and their interworking will be a challenging objective. The employment of Internet technology, with its novel mobility and security extensions, seems to be the most attractive option for achieving that goal. In addition, the migration to a full IP network architecture, even within each specific wireless domain, will be another promising opportunity, already under consideration within several technical and standardization bodies. The envisioned role of Internet technology makes it worthwhile to undertake significant research efforts on the development of innovative IP-based mobile data systems, and opens promising opportunities for both telcos and Internet service providers.  相似文献

Now that the local market is open to competition, incumbent local exchange carriers as well as competitive LECs must not only follow the technology curve, but find a way to ride the wave of network convergence and offer innovative value-added services if they want to maintain their market share. Existing telecommunication networks and classical roles of operators are subject to fundamental change. Many network operators are currently seeking for new sources to generate revenue by exposing network capabilities to 3rd party service providers. At the same time we can observe that services on the World Wide Web (WWW) are becoming mature in terms of the definition of APIs that are offered towards other services. The combinations of those services are commonly referred to as Web 2.0 mash-ups. Rapid service design and creation becomes therefore important to meet the requirements in a changing technology and competitive market environment. This report describes our approach to include Next Generation Networks (NGN)-based telecommunications application enabler into complex services by defining a service broker that mediates between 3rd party applications and NGN service enablers. It provides policy-driven orchestration mechanisms for service enablers, a service authorization functionality, and a service discovery interface for Service Creation Environments. The work has been implemented as part of the Open SOA Telco Playground testbed at Fraunhofer FOKUS.  相似文献

随着电信网络和业务的发展,运营商逐渐将注意力更多地关注到提高用户的满意度和忠诚度上,并以用户为中心开展业务,而目前用户不同的数据业务信息多数分散在不同网元上存储,这样不利于网络和业务的融合。因此,用户数据融合成为运营商技术发展的研究热点。本文介绍了国际标准组织对于用户数据融合技术的研究现状,重点研究了目前较为成熟的3GPP的用户数据融合标准,分析了用户数据融合如何引入,给运营商未来向用户数据融合方向的演进提出了建议。  相似文献
