The microstructure and mechanical properties of dissimilar joints of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel and API X70 high-strength low-alloy steel were investigated. For this purpose, gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW)was used in three different heat inputs, including 0.73,0.84,and 0.97 kJ/mm.The microstructural investigations of different zones including base metals, weld metal,heat-affected zones and interfaces were performed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were measured by microhardness, tensile and impact tests. It was found that with increasing heat input, the dendrite size and inter-dendritic spacing in the weld metal increased. Also, the amount of delta ferrite in the weld metal was reduced. Therefore, tensile strength and hardness were reduced and impact test energy was increased. The investigation of the interface between AISI 316L base metal and ER316L filler metal showed that increasing the heat input increases the size of austenite grains in the fusion boundary.A transition region was formed at the interface between API X70 steel and filler metals.

A novel variant of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding called activated-TIG (A-TIG) welding, which uses a thin layer of activated flux coating applied on the joint area prior to welding, is known to enhance the depth of penetration during autogenous TIG welding and overcomes the limitation associated with TIG welding of modified 9Cr-1Mo steels. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a specific activated flux for enhancing the depth of penetration during autogeneous TIG welding of modified 9Cr-1Mo steel. In the current work, activated flux composition is optimized to achieve 6 mm depth of penetration in single-pass TIG welding at minimum heat input possible. Then square butt weld joints are made for 6-mm-thick and 10-mm-thick plates using the optimized flux. The effect of flux on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and residual stresses of the A-TIG weld joint is studied by comparing it with that of the weld joints made by conventional multipass TIG welding process using matching filler wire. Welded microstructure in the A-TIG weld joint is coarser because of the higher peak temperature in A-TIG welding process compared with that of multipass TIG weld joint made by a conventional TIG welding process. Transverse strength properties of the modified 9Cr-1Mo steel weld produced by A-TIG welding exceeded the minimum specified strength values of the base materials. The average toughness values of A-TIG weld joints are lower compared with that of the base metal and multipass weld joints due to the presence of δ-ferrite and inclusions in the weld metal caused by the flux. Compressive residual stresses are observed in the fusion zone of A-TIG weld joint, whereas tensile residual stresses are observed in the multipass TIG weld joint.

Using activating flux for gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) to improve penetration capability is a well-established technique. Argon is an inert gas and the one most widely used as a shielding gas for GTAW. For the most austenitic stainless steels, pure argon does not provide adequate weld penetration. Argon–hydrogen mixtures give a more even heat input to the workpiece, increasing the arc voltage, which tends to increase the volume of molten material in the weld pool as well as the weld depth-to-width ratio. Great interest has been shown in the interaction between activating flux and the hydrogen concentration in an argon-based shielding gas. In this study, the weld morphology, the arc profile, the retained delta ferrite content, the angular distortion, and the microstructures were examined. The application of an activating flux combining argon and hydrogen for GTAW is important in the industry. The results of this study are presented here.

In this article, Welding of AA2219 aluminium alloy using Gas tungsten arc welding process (GTAW) and evaluation of metallurgical, mechanical and corrosion properties of the joints are discussed. The weld samples were subjected to ageing process at the temperature range of 195°C for a period of 5 h to improve the properties. AA2219 aluminium plates of thickness of 25 mm were welded using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process in double V butt joint configuration. The input parameters considered in this work are welding current, voltage and welding speed. Tensile strength and hardness were measured as performance characteristics. The variation in the properties were justified with the help of microstructures. The same procedures were repeated for post weld heat treated samples and a comparison was made between as weld condition and age treated conditions. The post weld heat samples had better tensile strength and hardness values on comparing with the as weld samples. Fracture surface obtained from the tensile tested specimen revealed ductile mode of failure.

In the present research, microstructure and mechanical properties of 2205 duplex stainless steel/A517 quench and tempered low alloy steel dissimilar joint were investigated. For this purpose, gas tungsten arc welding was used with ER2209 filler metal. Characterizations were conducted by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical properties were evaluated in micro-hardness, tensile and impact tests. Microstructure in the weld zone included an austenitic continuous network in the matrix of primary ferrite. No brittle phases were formed in the weld metal and stainless steel heat affected zone (HAZ). The weld metal/A517 interface showed higher hardness than other regions. Tensile tests indicated that the values of the yield and tensile strength were 663 and 796 MPa, respectively. Impact tests indicated that the weld zone had almost the same impact energy as base metals. The minimum impact energy of 12 J was related to A517 HAZ. The results of scanning electron microscopy for fracture surfaces indicated that weld zone, 2205 HAZ and A517 HAZ had ductile, ductile–brittle and brittle fracture mode, respectively.

In the research work, an attempt is made to join nickel-based alloy 825 by employing CO2 laser beam welding. Successful full penetration weld joint of a 5?mm thick plate is achieved with a very low heat input of 120?J-mm?1. Narrow weld bead width of 0.6?mm at the root and 1.6?mm at the cap is observed fusion zone; the interface and base metal microstructures have been examined using both optical and scanning electron microscopic techniques to understand the microstructural changes which have occurred due to laser welding. A range of tests of Vickers micro hardness, tensile and impact tests had been performed on the weldment to ascertain the mechanical properties of the joint. Tensile failure at the base metal and a 180° root bend test conducted on the weldment ascertain the soundness of the weld joint produced. An attempt is made to correlate the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weldment. Intermetallics TiN and Al4C3 observed in the SEM\EDS analysis at the fusion zone are found to have improved the weld metal strength and hardness.

This paper discusses the influence of Flux Cored Arc Welding Process parameters such as welding current, travel speed, voltage on bead profile, metallurgical and mechanical properties of welds of 2 mm thick 409M ferritic stainless steel sheets. The study reveals that, grain coarsening, volume fraction of martensite, hardness of heat affected zone and % of delta ferrite in ER 309 weld metal increases with increase in heat input. However, the results show that variation of heat input does not make any significant effect on tensile strength of the joint. Hence, welding parameters that provide uniform bead profile for the weld are recommended for fabrication.

In the present work, dissimilar welding between UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) and 316L austenitic stainless steel (ASS) was performed by using gas tungsten arc welding and ER2209 filler at two different heat inputs (0.52 and 0.98 kJ/mm). Microstructures were characterized using reflected light optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Micro-hardness and tensile properties were measured across the weld for both the heat inputs. The microstructure of the welded region was primarily austenitic (for both heat inputs) with Widmanstätten morphology. The grain size of the heat affected zone on DSS side was very large (~200 µm) for the high heat input sample with the presence of partially transformed austenite and acicular austenite. The precipitation of intermetallic phases and carbides was not observed for both the heat inputs. The proportion of ferrite in the weld metal (as measured by feritscope) was higher for the high heat input sample than the low heat input sample. During the tensile test, fracture occurred in 316L ASS base metal (because of its lower strength) in ductile manner. For high heat input welds, the impact tested sample showed the presence of fine spherical precipitates rich in Cr, Mn and Fe in the fracture surface of weld metal.

The current work was carried out to characterize welding of Inconel 625 superalloy and 316L stainless steel. In the present study, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) with two types of filler metals (ERNiCrMo-3 and ERSS316L) and an electrode (ENiCrMo-3) were utilized. This paper describes the selection of the proper welding method and welding consumables in dissimilar metal joining. During solidification of ERNiCrMo-3 filler metal, Nb and Mo leave dendritic cores and are rejected to inter-dendritic regions. However, ERSS316L filler metal has small amounts of elements with a high tendency for segregation. So, occurrence of constitutional super-cooling for changing the solidification mode from cellular to dendritic or equiaxed is less probable. Using GTAW with lower heat input results in higher cooling rate and finer microstructure and less Nb segregation. The interface between weld metal and base metal and also unmixed zones was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Microhardness measurements, tensile test, and Charpy impact test were performed to see the effect of these parameters on mechanical properties of the joints.

Comparative studies have been performed to decide an appropriate combination of welding process and filler material by virtue of microstructural evolution, micro-hardness studies, tensile strength and fractographic analysis. Manual arc welding and tungsten inert gas welding processes are used along with different filler materials to manufacture T91/T22 welded joints. Studies with the purpose of comparison and evaluation of different zones of the weldments have been carried out. The highest value of micro-hardness observed on the T91 HAZ of the weldments may be attributed to martensitic structure of the region. The fracture morphology of both the weldments obtained from T22 BM has revealed the ductile fracture. Comparatively higher tensile strength (578 MPa) of T91/T22, GTAW combination is noticed by virtue of lower heat input. The better performance of T91/T22, GTAW weldment can be quoted on the basis of better joint integrity, tensile strength and ductility (26.4%).

Activating flux-assisted gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is a well-established method for enhancing weld penetration. In GTAW, steel is usually welded with a shielding gas that contains mostly argon. However, pure argon does not provide enough weld penetration. Argon-helium mixtures are inert and a greater concentration of helium would increase the arc voltage and the weld depth-to-width (D/W) ratio. There is a significant level of interest in the interaction between activating flux and shielding gas composition. Weld morphology, arc profile, retained δ ferrite content, angular distortion, and microstructure are extremely important in applying the activating flux combination argon-helium in GTAW; therefore, in this work, all these were studied.

As a new type of high manganese steel, the twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steels have attracted a growing interest in the automotive industry due to their good performance. Thin plates of TWIP steel were welded by laser beam welding (LBW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The microstructure result shows that GTAW joint has obvious heat-affected zone (HAZ), while the HAZ of LBW joint is almost invisible. The X-ray diffraction result shows that the phase compositions of both joints are austenitic and no phase transition occurs. Energy disper- sive spectrometry result shows that there is violent evaporation of Mn element in LBW joint, while the proportion of Mn element in GTAW joint is almost unchanged. Tensile tests and micro-hardness measurements were performed to take into account the mechanical properties of joints manufactured by the two different processes. The micro-hard- ness profiles of both joints present a typical saddle distribution, and the hardness of GTAW seam is lower than that of LBW seam. The failure positions of LBW joints are all located in base metal while the GTAW joints are all at the weld toe due to the softening of HAZ. By means of scanning electron microscopy, a typical ductile fracture is observed in LBW joint, while a brittle fracture with quasi-cleavage fracture characteristic is observed in GTAW joint.

In this article, an attempt was made to optimize the welding parameters of gas tungsten arc welding of 15CDV6 steel. Experiments based on Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array were carried out in this research paper. The input parameters such as current, voltage, travel speed were considered for joining 15CDV6 plates of thickness 3.7 mm. Aftermath, the welds were subjected to post weld heat treatment. The performance characteristics such as bead width, reinforcement, tensile strength, hardness and depth of penetration of the welds were also measured. Grey relational analysis (GRA) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution method (TOPSIS) were used for identifying the optimised input parameters. Analysis of variance was used to identify the influence of each individual parameter on the multi-objective function. The metallurgical characterisations of the optimised weld were compared with the microstructures obtained using optical microscope. It was made clear that both GRA and TOPSIS produced different set of optimized parameters. But on experimentation, it was found that optimized parameters obtained from TOPSIS produced weld with better properties. At the initial stage, the base metal reflected inferior properties to weldments but there was a significant improvement in the properties of base metal after post weld heat treatment.

This research article examines the metallurgical and mechanical behavior of twenty-first-century nickel-based superalloy 686. The weld joints were produced with ERNiCrMo-4 and ERNiCrMo-14 filler wires by continuous current gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and pulsed current gas tungsten arc welding (PCGTAW) mode. Optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were performed to evaluate the microstructure of welded joints. PCGTAW weldments showed refined microstructure, narrower weld bead and minimum heat-affected zone compared to GTAW. SEM analysis revealed the presence of secondary phases in the interdendritic regions of GTA and PCGTA weldments made of ERNiCrMo-4 and GTA ERNiCrMo-14 fillers. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy examination was also performed to assess the microsegregation of alloying elements in the weldments. The results proved nonexistence of microsegregation in the case of PCGTA weldments made by ERNiCrMo-14 filler. However, segregation of alloying element Mo was noticed in other weldments. Strength and toughness of the weld joints were evaluated by conducting tensile and Charpy impact tests. The refined microstructure with the absence of microsegregation obtained in the PCGTA welding made with ERNiCrMo-14 filler wire resulted in the higher strength and toughness than other weldments.

Cable welding wire (CWW) CO2 gas shielded welding is an innovative process arc welding with high efficiency, high quality and low consumption, in which cable wire is used as consumable electrode. CWW CO2 gas shielded welding and submerged arc welding (SAW) are used for contrast studies on processing property of high strength steel A36 used in ship structure. The results show that the shapes of weld seam, using CWW CO2 gas shielded welding and SAW, are good and no weld defect such as air hole, flaw, slag inclusion, incomplete fusion, lack of penetration and so on are found in the weld seam. Because the rotating of arc during CWW CO2 gas shielded welding process has a strong stirring effect on molten pool, the grain in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the joints, using CWW CO2 gas shielded welding, is small. Tensile failure positions of joints by CWW CO2 gas shielded welding and SAW are all in the base metal, but tensile strength of CWW CO2 gas shielded welding joint is higher than that of SAW joint by an average of 2. 3%. The average impact energy of HAZ, using CWW CO2 gas shielded welding and SAW, is almost equal, but the average impact energy of the weld seam using CWW CO2 gas shielded welding is increased by 6%, and the average impact energy of the fusion line is increased by 7%. The 180° bending tests for the joints of CWW CO2 gas shielded welding and SAW are all qualified, and the joints hardness is all less than HV 355, but hardness of CWW CO2 gas shielded welding wire welding joint near the fusion line is obviously lower. It can be concluded that the properties of CWW CO2 gas shielded welding are better than those of the SAW joint, and CWW CO2 gas shielded welding is suitable for welding high strength steel A36 used in ship structure.

This study was carried out to investigate the evaluation of dissimilar welding between Incoloy 825 Ni-based alloy and SAF 2507 super duplex stainless steel. Welding was conducted by pulsed current (PC) and continuous current (CC) gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) methods using ERNiCrMo-3 filler wire. The microstructure of weld zones and base metal/weld interfaces as well as mechanical properties of weldments were characterized. The results detailed the formation of Nb, and Mo-rich phases in the inter-dendritic regions of weld metals leading to a decrease in impact resistance of weld zones in comparison to parent metals. Presence of more secondary phases at the CCGTA weld metal resulted in higher hardness and lower toughness than that of the PCGTAW sample. During tensile tests, fracture occurred at the Incoloy 825 base metal, and both weldments also underwent ductile mode of fracture. The research addressed the microstructure–property relationship for dissimilar weld joints.
