In this study, nanocomposites of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) containing 0.5, 1, and 2.5 wt % oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT–COOHs) were prepared by the solved evaporation method. From transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy micrographs, we observed that the MWCNT–COOHs were well dispersed in the PLA matrix and, additionally, there was increased adhesion between PLA and the nanotubes. As a result, all of the studied nanocomposites exhibited higher mechanical properties than neat PLA; this indicated that the MWCNT–COOHs acted as efficient reinforcing agents, whereas in the nonoxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes, the mechanical properties were reduced. Nanotubes can act as nucleating agents and, thereby, affect the thermal properties of PLA and, especially, the crystallization rate, which is faster than that of neat PLA. From the thermogravimetric data, we observed that the PLA/MWCNT–COOH nanocomposites presented relatively better thermostability than PLA; this was also verified from the calculation of activation energy. On the contrary, the addition of MWCNT–COOH had a negative effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis rate of PLA. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

A series of polyimide‐based nanocomposites containing polyimide‐grafted multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (PI‐g MWCNTs) and silane‐modified ceramic (aluminium nitride (AlN)) were prepared. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of hybrid PI‐g MWCNT/AlN/polyetherimide nanocomposites were investigated. After polyimide grafting modification, the PI‐g MWCNTs showed good dispersion and wettability in the polyetherimide matrix and imparted excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. The utilization of the hybrid filler was found to be effective in increasing the thermal conductivity of the composites due to the enhanced connectivity due to the high‐aspect‐ratio MWCNT filler. The use of spherical AlN filler and PI‐g MWCNT filler resulted in composite materials with enhanced thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Results indicated that the hybrid PI‐g MWCNT and AlN fillers incorporated into the polyetherimide matrix enhanced significantly the thermal stability, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the matrix. BACKGROUND: Polymer/multi‐walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are one of the most promising alternatives to conventional polymer composites filled with micrometre‐sized fillers. This approach can also be applied for the improvement of mechanical properties and thermal stability of biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, such as poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA), which have been receiving increasing attention due to environmental concerns. Thermal degradation behaviour provides useful information for the determination of the optimum processing conditions and for identification of potential applications of final products. RESULTS: The PLLA/MWCNT composites investigated showed a higher thermal degradation peak temperature and onset temperature of degradation along with a higher amount of residue at the completion of degradation than neat PLLA. Moreover, PLLA/MWCNT composites with a greater MWCNT content showed higher activation energy of thermal degradation than those with a lower MWCNT loading, which confirmed the positive effect of MWCNT incorporation on the enhancement of PLLA thermal stability. CONCLUSION: This study explored the thermal degradation behaviour of PLLA/MWCNT composites by observing the weight loss, molecular weight and mechanical properties during non‐isothermal and isothermal degradation. The incorporation of MWCNTs into the PLLA matrix enhanced considerably the mechanical properties and thermal stability. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A spray drying approach has been used to prepare polyurethane/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PU/MWCNT) composites. By using this method, the MWCNTs can be dispersed homogeneously in the PU matrix in an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. The morphology of the resulting PU/MWCNT composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM and TEM observations illustrate that the MWCNTs are dispersed finely and uniformly in the PU matrix. X‐ray diffraction results indicate that the microphase separation structure of the PU is slightly affected by the presence of the MWCNTs. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and hardness of the nanocomposites were studied. The electrical and the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites were also evaluated. The results show that both the electrical and the thermal conductivity increase with the increase of MWCNT loading. In addition, the percolation threshold value of the PU composites is significantly reduced to about 5 wt % because of the high aspect ratio of carbon nanotubes and exclusive effect of latex particles of PU emulsion in dispersion. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the preparation, characterization and physical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)‐filled epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) composites. To ensure better dispersion in the elastomer matrix, the MWCNTs were initially subjected to aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) treatment to bind amine functional groups (?NH2) on the nanotube surface. Successful grafting of APS on the MWCNT surface through Si–O–C linkages was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Grafting of APS on the MWCNT surface was further corroborated using elemental analysis. ENR nanocomposites with various filler loadings were prepared by melt compounding to generate pristine and APS‐modified MWCNT‐filled elastomeric systems. Furthermore, we determined the effects of various filler loadings on the rheometric, mechanical, electrical and thermal degradation properties of the resultant composite materials. Rheometric cure characterization revealed that the torque difference increased with pristine MWCNT loading compared to the gum system, and this effect was more pronounced when silane‐functionalized MWCNTs were loaded, indicating that this effect was due to an increase in polymer–carbon nanotube interactions in the MWCNT‐loaded materials. Loading of silane‐functionalized MWCNTs in the ENR matrix resulted in a significant improvement in the mechanical, electrical and thermal degradation properties of the composite materials, when compared to gum or pristine MWCNT‐loaded materials.© 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this study, multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and boron nitride (BN) were functionalized with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at both pH 5.5 and pH 11. These MWCNT‐CTAB and BN‐CTAB particles used to prepare the composites were dispersed in a bisphenol A (DGEBA)‐type epoxy resin (ER) system at room temperature. The TGA analysis showed that the BN composite can significantly improve the thermal stability of neat ER at temperatures above 400 °C. The curing degrees of the nanocomposites were calculated to be approximately the same values as neat ER using the Beer–Lambert law from FTIR spectra. The best electrical conductivity of the composites obtained was 3.10 × 10−3 S/cm for ER/MWCNT‐CTAB (pH 5.5). The surface hardness, Young's modulus, and tensile strength of the composites were examined. The surface hardness values of the ER/MWCNT‐CTAB composites were higher than those of the other composites. The composite morphology was characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). POLYM. COMPOS., 37:3423–3432, 2016. © 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Low‐molecular‐weight copolymers of styrene and vinylbenzyl ammonium salts (oligomeric surfactant) were used to modify montmorillonite (MMT). The oligomeric‐modified MMT showed good thermal stability, which made it suitable to be used for preparing polycarbonate(PC)/MMT nanocomposites at high temperature. A different series of PC/MMT nanocomposites had been prepared by melt processing using a twin screw extruder. The effect of oligomeric surfactant structure and clay loading on the morphology, mechanical property, thermal stability, and color appearance of the nanocomposites were explored. The results of X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses indicated that the PC/MMT nanocomposites had partially exfoliated structures. The PC/MMT nanocomposites were found to retain light colored, which was important for optical application. Compared to neat PC, the nanocomposites showed better properties of thermal stability and heat insulation. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites are significantly enhanced by incorporating clay into the PC matrix. The tensile strength of nanocomposites with 2 wt% clay content was up to 55 MPa, which was much higher than that of the neat PC (37 MPa). The maximum tensile modulus value was 19% higher than that of neat PC. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The effects of epoxy‐functionalized glass fiber (GF) on the electrical conductivity, crystallization behavior, thermal stability, and dynamic mechanical properties of polyoxymethylene (POM)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are investigated. The electrical resistivities of POM/5%−20% TPU/1% MWCNT composites are significantly reduced by nine orders of magnitude after the addition of 20% GF because of the formation of TPU‐coated GF structure facilitating the construction of conductive networks. GF has no obvious influence on the crystallization temperature, melting temperature, and degree of crystallinity of POM in POM/TPU/MWCNT composites because of their relatively bigger size compared with POM chains and MWCNTs. The storage moduli of POM/TPU/MWCNT composites are improved by the addition of GF, indicating that POM/TPU/MWCNT/GF composites are promising materials with good electrical and mechanical properties. Foaming behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposites and thermally‐insulating, electrical, and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite foams are investigated. PMMA/MWCNT nanocomposites containing various amounts of MWCNTs are first prepared by combining solution and melt blending methods, and then foamed using CO2. The foaming temperature and MWCNT content are varied for regulating the structure of PMMA/MWCNT nanocomposite foams. The electrical conductivity measurement results show that MWCNTs have little effect on the electrical conductivity of foams with large expansion ratio. Thermal conductivities of both solid and foamed PMMA/MWCNT nanocomposites are measured to evaluate their thermally insulating properties. The gas conduction, solid conduction, and thermal radiation of the foams are calculated for clarifying the effects of cellular structure and MWCNT content on thermal insulation properties. The result demonstrates that MWCNTs endowed foams with enhanced thermal insulation performance by blocking thermal radiation. Moreover, the compressive testing shows that MWCNTs improve the compressive strength and rigidity of foams. This research is essential for optimizing environmentally friendly thermal insulation nanocomposite foams with enhanced thermal‐insulation and compressive mechanical properties.  相似文献

Homogeneous multiwalled carbon nanotube/montmorillonite hybrid filler (HMM) dispersion was prepared by co‐ultrasonication and was subsequently used to prepare ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (EVA) nanocomposites by solution blending method. XRD and TEM analysis of HMM confirm significant interaction between the montmorillonite (MMT) layers and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in line with previous reports. Analysis of the nanocomposites shows the constituent fillers to be homogeneously dispersed in EVA matrix. Mechanical properties of neat EVA are remarkably improved with HMM content up to 3 wt% followed by reversion. Maximum improvement observed in tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness are 424%, 109%, and 1122%, respectively. Results show maximum thermal stability at 4 wt% and best dielectric response at 1 wt% HMM content. Exceptional mechanical and dielectric properties of EVA nanocomposites attained may be attributed to homogeneous dispersion of fillers and improved polymer–filler interaction. Comparison shows excellent synergy between MWCNT and MMT towards mechanical reinforcement of EVA. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 58:1155–1165, 2018. © 2017 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Single‐wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and carbon nanofibers (CNF) were oxidized with a conventional H2SO4/HNO3 treatment, and the resulting COOH groups were esterified with phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE). Pristine, oxidized and esterified SWCNT, MWCNT, and CNF (1 wt%) were dispersed in diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/polyether triamine, and cured to produce epoxy nanocomposite. The quality of the dispersion varied with surface modification in the order: COOH > unmodified > PGE, as assessed for SWCNT/epoxy composites using radial breathing modes in Raman spectra and scanning electron microscopy. Local bundling of PGE‐modified nanofillers was explained by a polymerization‐induced phase‐separation process. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed the presence of two relaxation peaks in nanocomposites prepared with unmodified and COOH‐modified SWCNT, MWCNT, and CNF, assigned to a partitioning of monomers at the carbon interface. This produced a significant decrease of the glass transition temperature. However, the esterification with PGE led to a single relaxation peak close to the one of the neat epoxy, for the three types of nanofillers without any penalty in the glassy and rubbery elastic moduli. The effect was explained by matrix exclusion from phase‐separated domains. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Polymer‐based composites find use in many nuclear and space application for their ease of fabrication, tailor made properties and light weight. Certain polymers like PTFE, unfilled polyesters and polyamides are prone to degradation in presence of high energy radiation while polymers like epoxies, polyimides, and poly‐ether ether ketone have good stability to ionizing radiation. Incorporation of fillers like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is likely to improve the radiation resistance of the polymers. In this work, polysulfone (PSU)‐based nanocomposites were fabricated using multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) by solution mixing process. The morphology of the PSU/ MWCNT nanocomposites films were studied using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The prepared films were subjected to γ radiation in an argon environment (to avoid the effect of air/oxygen). Different techniques were used to understand the radiation‐induced changes. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) traces of neat PSU before and after exposure to radiation shows a decrease in molecular weight. Infrared spectroscopy shows changes in chemical structure. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) thermograms reveal dose‐related changes. For neat PSU, a decrease in Tg was observed with increase in dose. For PSU/ MWCNT nanocomposites, the increase in MWCNT content and dose (up to 1.5 MGy) increased the Tg. Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) showed a marginal decrease in thermal stability for pristine PSU as well as PSU/MWCNT nanocomposites with irradiation. Tensile strength increased with increasing MWCNT content but decreased with dose. Elongation at break decreased with MWCNT content as well as radiation dose. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. The main motivation of the present work was to fabricate novel multifunctional polymer‐based nanocomposites. The nanocomposites embedded with multi‐walled carbon nanotube‐boehmite (MWCNT‐boehmite) were prepared via hot pressure casting technique. The MWCNT coated with boehmite were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. Subsequently, as‐prepared MWCNT‐boehmite was added into the phthalonitrile‐terminated polyarylene ether nitriles (PEN‐t‐CN) matrix in order to benefit from the synergetic effect of MWCNT and boehmite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) were employed to confirm the existence of MWCNT‐boehmite in our article. Furthermore, the structures, fracture morphologies, thermal, mechanical and dielectric properties of the nanocomposites were investigated, respectively. SEM images indicated that the MWCNT‐boehmite was homogeneously dispersed in the polymer, which acted as an essential factor to ensure good physical properties. The TGA analysis showed that the incorporation of MWCNT‐boehmite enhanced the thermal stability of the nanocomposites with initial degradation temperature (Tid) increasing from 458 to 492°C, while that of the pure PEN‐t‐CN was 439°C. The mechanical testing proved that significant enhancement of mechanical properties has been achieved. The tensile strength of PEN‐t‐CN/MWCNT‐boehmite composites with 3 wt% MWCNT‐boehmite reached the maximum (78.33 MPa), with a 41.7 % increase compared to the pure polymer. More importantly, the unique dielectric properties were systematically discussed and the results demonstrated that dielectric properties exhibited little dependency on frequency. For the incorporation of hybrid filler, the positive impact of MWCNT‐boehmite hybrid material resulted in polymer‐based nanocomposites with enhanced physical properties. POLYM. Electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites containing functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid nanofillers have been investigated. The observed electrical percolation threshold of FHC is 0.8 wt% with maximum conductivity of 1.21 × 10?3 S/cm at 4 wt% of f‐MWCNTs. The electrical transport mechanism and magneto resistance studied of hybrid composites have also been investigated. Progressive addition of f‐MWCNTs in rGO/PMMA composite results increase in mechanical (tensile strength and Young's modulus) and thermal (thermal stability) properties of f‐MWCNTs‐rGO/PMMA hybrid nanocomposites (FHC). The increased mechanical properties are due to the efficient load transfer from PMMA matrix to f‐MWCNTs and rGO through better chemical interaction. The strong interaction between PMMA and f‐MWCNTs‐rGO in FHC is the main cause for improved thermal stability. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 59:1075–1083, 2019. © 2019 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Both epoxy resin and acid‐modified multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were treated with 3‐isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (IPTES). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electronic microscope (TEM) images of the MWCNT/epoxy composites have been investigated. Tensile strength of cured silane‐modified MWCNT (1.0 wt %)/epoxy composites increased 41% comparing to the neat epoxy. Young's modulus of cured silane‐modified MWCNT (0.8 wt %)/epoxy composites increased 52%. Flexural strength of cured silane‐modified MWCNT (1.0 wt %)/epoxy composites increased 145% comparing to neat epoxy. Flexural modulus of cured silane‐modified MWCNT (0.8 wt %)/epoxy composites increased 31%. Surface and volume electrical resistance of MWCNT/epoxy composites were decreased with IPTES‐MWCNT content by 2 orders and 6 orders of magnitude, respectively. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation of thermoplastic nanocomposites of waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via an in situ polymerization approach is presented. The effects of the presence and content of MWCNTs on the morphology and thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. Carbon nanotubes were modified with amide groups in order to enhance their chemical affinity towards WBPU. Thermogravimetric studies show enhanced thermal stability of the nanocomposites. Scanning and transmission electronic microscopy images prove that functionalized carbon nanotubes can be effectively dispersed in WBPU matrix. Mechanical properties reveal that Young's modulus and tensile strength tend to increase when appropriate amounts of MWCNTs are loaded due to the reinforcing effect of the functionalized carbon nanotubes. Thermal properties show an increase in the glass transition temperature and storage modulus with an increase in MWCNT content. X‐ray diffraction reveals better crystallization of the WBPU in the presence of MWCNTs. The WBPU/MWCNT nanocomposite film containing 1 wt% of MWCNTs exhibits a conductivity nearly five orders of magnitude higher than that of WBPU film. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of microcellular poly(ether imide) (PEI) foams and nanocellular carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT‐COOH)/PEI foams were prepared by the batch foaming method. MWCNT‐COOHs with different aspect ratios were introduced into the PEI matrix as heterogeneous nucleation agents to improve the cell morphology of the microcellular PEI foams. The effect of the aspect ratio of the MWCNT‐COOHs on the cellular morphology, and gas diffusion is discussed. The results show that with the addition of MWCNT‐COOH, the sorption curve showed a slight reduction of carbon dioxide solubility, but the gas diffusion rate could be improved. The proper aspect ratio of MWCNT‐COOH could improve the cellular morphology under the same foaming conditions, in which m‐MWCNT‐COOH (aspect ratio ≈ 1333) was the best heterogeneous nucleation agent. When the foaming temperature was 170°C, the cell size and cell density of nanocellular m‐MWCNT‐COOH reduced to 180 nm and increased to 1.58 × 1013 cells/cm3, respectively. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), after previous oxidation, are functionalized with excess (3‐glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GLYMO) and used as reinforcement in epoxy matrix nanocomposites. Infrared, Raman, and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopies confirm the silanization of the MWCNT, while transmission electron microscopy images show that oxidized nanotubes presented less entanglement than pristine and silanized MWCNT. Thickening of the nanotubes is also observed after silanization, suggesting that the MWCNT are wrapped by siloxane chains. Field‐emission scanning electron microscopy reveals that oxidized nanotubes are better dispersed in the matrix, providing nanocomposites with better mechanical properties than those reinforced with pristine and silanized MWCNT. On the other hand, the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposite with 0.05 wt % MWCNT‐GLYMO increased by 14 °C compared to the neat epoxy resin, suggesting a strong matrix–nanotube adhesion. The functionalization of nanotubes using an excess amount of silane can thus favor the formation of an organosiloxane coating on the MWCNT, preventing its dispersion and contributing to poor mechanical properties of epoxy nanocomposites. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The in situ enzymatic polymerization of aniline onto multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and carboxylated MWCNT (COOH‐MWCNT) is reported. Nanostructured composites were prepared by this method. Polymerization was catalyzed with the enzyme horseradish peroxidase at room temperature in aqueous medium of pH 4. Hydrogen peroxide was used in low concentration as the oxidant. The nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The TEM studies showed tubular morphology with uniformly distributed MWCNT in the nanocomposites. The SEM and TEM investigations revealed wrapping of the MWCNT with polyaniline (PANI) chains. TGA demonstrated that the PANI component is thermally more stable in PANI/COOH‐MWCNT compared to the PANI/MWCNT composites. The synthesized nanocomposites showed higher conductivity than pure PANI, which may be due to the strong interaction between the PANI chains and the MWCNT.  相似文献

Despite the much touted mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes, composites reinforced with nanotubes have failed to achieve mechanical properties which rival those present in conventional fiber reinforced polymer composites. This article describes an attempt to bridge this gap. Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were synthesized using a chemical vapor deposition method and were dispersed in phenolic resin by both the wet and dry dispersion techniques before molding into composite bars (50 × 5 × 3 mm3). Although no improvement in the mechanical properties of the MWCNT/phenolic composites was observed over the neat resin value when wet mixing dispersion was employed, an improvement of nearly 158% (160 MPa as compared with 62 MPa for neat resin) was achieved in 5 vol% MWCNT containing phenolic resin prepared by the dry mixing.
