Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

Diblock copolymers of poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PMMA) were synthesized through a sequential two‐step strategy, which combines ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol. The trichloro‐terminated poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA‐Cl) with high molecular weight (Mn,GPC = 1–12 × 104 g/mol) was presynthesized through bulk ROP of L ‐lactide (L ‐LA), initiated by the hydroxyl group of the double‐headed initiator, with tin(II) octoate (Sn(Oct)2) as catalyst. The second segment of the block copolymer was synthesized by the ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA), with PLLA‐Cl as macroinitiator and CuCl/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was chosen as reaction medium due to the poor solubility of the macroinitiator in conventional solvents at the reaction temperature. The trichloroethoxyl terminal group of the macroinitiator was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The comprehensive results from GPC, FTIR, 1H‐NMR analysis indicate that diblock copolymers PLLA‐b‐PMMA (Mn,GPC = 5–13 × 104 g/mol) with desired molecular composition were obtained by changing the molar ratio of monomer/initiator. DSC, XRD, and TG analyses establish that the crystallization of copolymers is inhibited with the introduction of PMMA segment, which will be beneficial to ameliorating the brittleness, and furthermore, to improving the thermal performance. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel amphiphilic ABA‐type poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate)‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate) (PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA) tri‐block copolymers were successfully synthesized via the combination of the step‐growth and copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Dihydroxy polyurethane (HO‐PU‐OH) was synthesized by the step‐growth polymerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate with poly(tetramethylene glycol). PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA block copolymers were synthesized via copper‐catalyzed ATRP of GAMA in N, N‐dimethyl formamide at 20°C in the presence of 2, 2′‐bipyridyl using Br‐PU‐Br as macroinitiator and characterized by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC. The resulting block copolymer forms spherical micelles in water as observed in TEM study, and also supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy and light scattering. Miceller size increases with increase in hydrophilic PGAMA chain length as revealed by DLS study. The critical micellar concentration values of the resulting block copolymers increased with the increase of the chain length of the PGAMA block. Thermal properties of these block copolymers were studied by thermo‐gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetric study. Spherical Ag‐nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using these block copolymers as stabilizer. The dimension of Ag nanoparticle was tailored by altering the chain length of the hydrophilic block of the copolymer. A mechanism has been proposed for the formation of stable and regulated Ag nanoparticle using various chain length of hydrophilic PGAMA block of the tri‐block copolymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Block copolymerization of 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was studied in methanol using a macroinitiator method and a “one‐pot” sequential addition method. The polymerization sequence of the two monomers strongly affected the block copolymer formation. When DMAEMA was used as the first monomer, both methods produced block copolymer samples containing significant amounts of DMAEMA homopolymer chains, because of the elimination of active halogen chain‐ends during the preparation of polyDMAEMA. Well‐controlled block copolymers with various block lengths were obtained via the macroinitiator method when polyHEMA was used as macroinitiator to initiate the polymerization of DMAEMA. The sequential addition method, in which HEMA was polymerized first with 90% conversion and DMAEMA was subsequently added, also yielded controlled block copolymers when the polymerization was carried out at room temperature with the DMAEMA conversion below 60%. Increasing the temperature to 60 °C promoted the copolymerization rate but the reaction suffered from gel formation. The addition of water to the system accelerated the polymerization rate, but led to the loss of the system livingness.

Poly(benzyl ether)‐b‐polystyrene dendritic–linear polymers were successfully synthesized using a dendritic chloric poly(benzyl ether) (G1‐Cl, G2‐Cl, and G3‐Cl) as the macroinitiator through the atom transfer radical polymerization process. The structure and properties of the resultant polymers were characterizated by gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR, Fourier transform IR, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of the macroinitiator to styrene, and the generation number of the macroinitiator have significant effects on the molecular weights, conversion, and polydispersities of the resulting polymers. These dendritic–linear block polymers had very good solubility in common organic solvents at room temperature. The terminal group (dendritic segments) of the polymers can affect their thermal stability. These dendritic–linear polymers after self‐assembling in selective solvents (chloroform/acetone) formed core–shell micelles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene‐b‐poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐b‐polystyrene (Pst‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available difunctional PDMS containing vinylsilyl terminal species was reacted with hydrogen bromide, resulting in the PDMS macroinitiators for the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 130°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4, 4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. By using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PDMS center block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. The polymerization was controllable; ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in Mn with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H‐NMR. The effects of molecular weight of macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are reported. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 3764–3770, 2004  相似文献

The synthesis of triblock copolymer poly(octadecyl acrylate‐b‐styrene‐b‐octadecyl acrylate), using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is reported. The copolymers were prepared in two steps. First, polystyrene was synthesized by ATRP using α,α′‐dichloro‐p‐xylene/CuBr/bpy as the initiating system; Second, polystyrene was further used as macroinitiator for the ATRP of octadecyl acrylate to prepare ABA triblock copolymers in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O/PPh3 in toluene. Polymers with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 17,000–23,400) and low polydispersity index value (1.33–1.44) were obtained. The relationship between molecular weight versus conversion showed a straight line. The effect of reaction temperature on polymerization was also investigated, showing a faster polymerization rate under higher temperature. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and GPC and the crystallization behavior of the copolymers was also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was employed to prepare graft copolymers having poly(MBr)‐alt‐poly(St) copolymer as backbone and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as branches to obtain heat resistant graft copolymers. The macroinitiator was prepared by copolymerization of bromine functionalized maleimide (MBr) with styrene (St). The polymerization of MMA was initiated by poly(MBr)‐alt‐poly(St) carrying bromine groups as macroinitiator in the presence of copper bromide (CuBr) and bipyridine (bpy) at 110°C. Both macroinitiator and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA. The ATRP graft copolymerization was supported by an increase in the molecular weight (MW) of the graft copolymers as compared to that of the macroinitiator and also by their monomodal MW distribution. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The paper describes the synthesis of block copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and N‐aryl itaconimides using atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) via a poly(methyl methacrylate)–Cl/CuBr/bipyridine initiating system or a reverse ATRP AIBN/FeCl3·6H2O/PPh3 initiating system. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) macroinitiator, ie with a chlorine chain‐end (PMMA‐Cl), having a predetermined molecular weight (Mn = 1.27 × 104 g mol?1) and narrow polydispersity index (PDI = 1.29) was prepared using AIBN/FeCl3·6H2O/PPh3, which was then used to polymerize N‐aryl itaconimides. Increase in molecular weight with little effect on polydispersity was observed on polymerization of N‐aryl itaconimides using the PMMA‐Cl/CuBr/Bpy initiating system. Only oligomeric blocks of N‐aryl itaconimides could be incorporated in the PMMA backbone. High molecular weight copolymer with a narrow PDI (1.43) could be prepared using tosyl chloride (TsCl) as an initiator and CuBr/bipyridine as catalyst when a mixture of MMA and N‐(p‐chlorophenyl) itaconimide in the molar ratio of 0.83:0.17 was used. Thermal characterization was performed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic thermogravimetry. DSC traces of the block copolymers showed two shifts in base‐line in some of the block copolymers; the first transition corresponds to the glass transition temperature of PMMA and second transition corresponds to the glass transition temperature of poly(N‐aryl itaconimides). A copolymer obtained by taking a mixture of monomers ie MMA:N‐(p‐chlorophenyl) itaconimide in the molar ratio of 0.83:0.17 showed a single glass transition temperature. Reverse iodine transfer polymerizations (RITP) of 2‐h‐ydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) were performed in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 75°C using AIBN as initiator. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) with Mn = 3300 g mol?1 and Mw/Mn <1.5 were obtained. Homopolymerization of styrene in RITP was also carried out under similar conditions using toluene as solvent. The resulting iodo‐polystyrene (PS‐I) with (Mn, SEC = 607 g mol?1, polydispersity index (PDI) = 1.31) was used as a macroinitiator for the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers based on HEA with controlled well‐defined structure. Poly(styrene‐b‐2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PS‐b‐PHEA) with Mn = 13,000 g mol?1 and polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) = 1.4 was obtained, copolymer composition was characterized using 1H‐NMR and FTIR, whereas SEC and gradient HPLC were used to confirm the formation of block copolymer and the living character of polymer chains. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well defined block‐graft copolymers of cyclohexanone‐formaldehyde resin (CFR) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the first step, cyclohexanone formaldehyde resin (CFR) containing hydroxyl groups were modified with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. Resulting multifunctional macroinitiator was used in the ATRP of MMA using copper bromide (CuBr) and N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyl‐diethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst system at 90°C. The chemical composition and structure of the copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and molecular weight measurement. Molecular weight distributions of the CFR graft copolymers were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Mn values up to 19,000 associated with narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index (PDI) < 1.6) were obtained with conversions up to 49%. Coating properties of synthesized graft copolymers such as adhesion and gloss values were measured. They exhibited good adhesion properties on Plexiglas substrate. The thermal behaviors of all polymers were conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The spherulitic growth rates of a series poly (?‐caprolactone) homopolymers and poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐ poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG) block copolymers with different molecular weights but narrow polydispersity were studied. The results show that for both PCL homopolymers and PCL‐b‐PEG block copolymers, the spherulitic growth rate first increases with molecular weight and reaches a maximum, then decreases as molecular weight increases. Crystallization temperature has greater influence on the spherulitic growth rate of polymers with higher molecular weight. Hoffman–Lauritzen theory was used to analyze spherulitic growth kinetics and the free energy of the folding surface (σe) was derived. It is found that the values of σe decrease with molecular weight at low molecular weight level and become constant for high molecular weight polymers. The chemically linked PEG block does not change the values of σe significantly. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The surface of a substrate which comprises a fibrous material is brought into contact with a type of amphiphilic block copolymer which comprises hydrophilic/hydrophobic polymeric blocks. These amphiphilic copolymers have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The atom transfer radical polymerization of poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PFS‐b‐PEO) copolymers (di‐ and triblock structures) with various ranges of PEO molecular weights was initiated by a PEO chloro‐telechelic macroinitiator. The polymerization, carried out in bulk and catalysed by copper(I) chloride in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine ligand, led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock and A–B amphiphilic diblock structures. RESULTS: With most of the macroinitiators, the living nature of the polymerizations led to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.09 < Mw/Mn < 1.33) and well‐controlled molecular structures. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through adjustment of the PEO block content (>90 wt%). Of all the block copolymers synthesized, PFS‐b‐PEO(10k)‐b‐PFS containing 10 wt% PFS was found to retard water absorption considerably. CONCLUSION: The printability of paper treated with the copolymers was evaluated with contact angle measurements and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. Poly(butyl methylacrylate)–b–poly(dimethylsiloxane)–b–poly(butyl methylacrylate) (PBMA–b–PDMS–b–PBMA) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction of α,ω‐dichloride PDMS with 2′‐hydroxyethyl‐2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropanoate gave suitable macroinitiators for the ATRP of BMA. The latter procedure was carried out at 110°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4,4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. The polymerization was controllable, with the increase of the monomer conversion, there was a nearly linear increase of molecular weight and a decrease of polydispersity in the process of the polymerization, and the rate of the polymerization was first‐order with respect to monomer conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H‐NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP were reported. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 532–538, 2004  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was applied to a novel synthesis of rod consisting of hyperbranched pendant chains‐coil block copolymers. The procedure included the following steps: (1) esterification reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PEO) with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) yielded a PEO‐Br macroinitiator, (2) ATRP method of 2‐hydroxylethyl methacrylate (HEMA) using PEO‐Br provided PEO‐block‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) block copolymers, (3) esterification of PEO‐block‐PHEMA with BIBB yielded block‐type polyinitiator, and (4) ATRP of HEMA‐Br inimer using block‐type polyinitiator provided coil‐rod (consisting of hyperbranched pendant chains) block copolymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(l ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(l ‐lactide) block copolymers (PLLA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PLLA) were synthesized in a toluene solution by the ring‐opening polymerization of 3,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐dioxan‐2,5‐dione (LLA) with PEG as a macroinitiator or by transterification from the homopolymers [polylactide and PEG]. Two polymerization conditions were adopted: method A, which used an equimolar catalyst/initiator molar ratio (1–5 wt %), and method B, which used a catalyst content commonly reported in the literature (<0.05 wt %). Method A was more efficient in producing copolymers with a higher yield and monomer conversion, whereas method B resulted in a mixture of the copolymer and homopolymers. The copolymers achieved high molar masses and even presenting similar global compositions, the molar mass distribution and thermal properties depends on the polymerization method. For instance, the suppression of the PEG block crystallization was more noticeable for copolymer A. An experimental design was used to qualify the influence of the catalyst and homopolymer amounts on the transreactions. The catalyst concentration was shown to be the most important factor. Therefore, the effectiveness of method A to produce copolymers was partly due to the transreactions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40419.  相似文献

Narrow‐distribution, well‐defined comb‐like amphiphilic copolymers are reported in this work. The copolymers are composed of poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐HEMA)) as the backbones and poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) as the grafted chains, with the copolymer backbones being synthesized via atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and the grafted chains by oxyanionic polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The aggregation behavior in aqueous solutions of the comb‐like amphiphilic copolymers was also investigated. 1H NMR spectroscopic and surface tension measurements all indicated that the copolymers could form micelles in aqueous solutions and they possessed high surface activity. The results of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations showed that the hydrodynamic diameters of the comb‐like amphiphilic copolymer aggregates increased with dilution. Because of the protonizable properties of the graft chains, the surface activity properties and micellar state can be easily modulated by variations in pH. Hybrid block copolymers find applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetics and bioimaging, amongst others, mainly due to their propensity to form phase‐separated microdomains as well as to the aggregation of their polypeptide segments. They not only enhance control over structure at the nanometre scale but also yield materials that can interface with various biosystems for different utilities. α‐Methoxy‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly[?‐(benzyloxycarbonyl)‐l ‐lysine] hybrid block copolymers of varying degrees of polymerization, MPEGn‐b‐PLL(Z)m, were synthesized by N‐carboxyanhydride ring‐opening polymerization and characterized using infrared and NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Their secondary structures and bulk conformations were investigated using circular dichroism spectroscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, respectively, whereas thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative TGA and differential scanning calorimetry were employed for thermal analyses. The resulting block copolymers exhibited microphase separation and suppressed degrees of crystallinity with increasing l ‐lysine content and adopted α‐helix and β‐sheet secondary structures in aqueous milieu. The copolymers were also more thermally stable than their constituent homopolymers. Interestingly, the effects of the retention of the N?‐benzyloxycarbonyl moiety on polymer properties proved considerable. The hybrid block copolymers herein afforded hierarchical structures of potential utility in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(vinyl acetate‐b‐methyl methacrylate) block copolymers were successfully synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in p‐xylene with CuBr as a catalyst, 2,2′‐bipyridine as a ligand, and trichloromethyl‐end‐grouped poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc–CCl3) as a macroinitiator that was prepared via the telomerization of vinyl acetate with chloroform as a telogen. The block copolymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H‐NMR. The effects of the solvent and temperature on ATRP of MMA were studied. The control over a large range of molecular weights was investigated with a high [MMA]/[PVAc–CCl3] ratio for potential industry applications. In this study, synthesis, characterization, partial hydrolysis, and salt formation of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐co‐poly(4‐vinyl pyridine), (poly(HEMA)‐co‐poly‐(4‐VP)) copolymers were investigated. The copolymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization using K2S2O8 as an initiator. By varying the monomer/initiator ratio, chain lengths of the copolymers were changed. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), viscosity measurements, 1H and 13C NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, and end group analysis methods. The copolymers were partially hydrolyzed by p‐toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate (PTSA·H2O) and washed with LiOH(aq) solution to prepare electrorheological (ER) active ionomers, poly(Li‐HEMA)‐co‐poly(4‐VP). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
