Late replication banding and C-banding analyses were performed on the metaphase chromosomes of six species and one subspecies of Palearctic water frogs, genus Rana. Although C-banding patterns showed interspecific or intersubspecific variation, late replication banding patterns of all 13 chromosome pairs of these species were homologous. Minor differences of banding patterns were observed only in chromosomes 2, 7 and 13. Close comparison of the late replication banding patterns with those of three non-water frog species of Rana, and one each of Hyla and Bufo, provided important information on interspecific and intergeneric variability. In the Rana species, the banding patterns of all 13 pairs were homologous except for those some regions of 8 pairs. In one species each of Hyla and Bufo that was examined, the six large chromosome pairs (Nos. 1-6) showed banding homologies. Furthermore, among the Rana, Hyla and Bufo species the four large chromosome pairs (Nos. 1-3, 5 of Rana and Hyla, and Nos. 1, 3-5 of Bufo) shared banding homologies. These results show that the large chromosomes have been highly conserved in the evolutionary history of the three genera. 相似文献

Forty adult Bufo hemiophrys from Alberta, Canada, were examined for helminths. Four species were found: a trematode, Gorgoderina simplex, and 3 nematodes, Cosmocercoides variabilis, Oswaldocruzia pipiens, and Rhabdias americanus. Rhabdias americanus had the highest prevalence of helminths (73%); C. variabilis had the highest mean intensity (26+/-33 SD). Bufo hemiophrys represents a new host record for each species of helminth. 相似文献

The regulation of body water balance was examined in the reedfrogs Hyperolius marmoratus taeniatus and Hyperolius viridiflavus ommatostictus. Temperature and stage of post-metamorphic development significantly affected the rate of water uptake. Hydrated reedfrogs prevented hyperhydration by voiding diluted urine when obtaining water. Within 48 hr after rehydration, body fluid osmolality remained at low levels, which may be supportive to counter excessive cutaneous water influx in hydrated frogs. Once evaporative water loss exceeded 10-12% total body mass, reedfrogs became anuric. The rate of water uptake strongly increased with increasing body water deficit. Both the anuric response and the increased rate of water uptake are assumed to strongly enhance the efficacy of using very briefly available water sources during dry-period conditions. Dry-adapted and estivating reedfrogs survived evaporative water losses between 40 and 55% total body mass. Bladder fluid stores contributed substantially to this desiccation tolerance. During a 16-day period of desiccation, H. v. ommatostictus could replace approximately 25% of evaporative water loss from the bladder fluid store. During desiccation, the level of free amino acids selectively increased in the gastrocnemius muscle tissue, which may support cell volume regulation and/or protect cellular structures from osmotic stresses. Even strongly dehydrated reedfrogs rehydrated quickly with no obvious osmoregulatory problem. Rehydration was associated with a higher than expected decrease of free amino acids in the gastrocnemius muscle tissue, a response that may help to protect cells from bursting during fast rehydration. 相似文献

Endocrine cells of the larval intestine of Rana temporaria tadpoles have been identified by argyrophilic, immunocytochemical and electron-microscopical techniques. Scarce endocrine cells have been found in both the short non-absorptive zone immediately following the stomach, and in the rest of the anterior intestine. Endocrine cells are frequently seen to extend a cytoplasmic process towards the lumen. Immunoreactivity for serotonin, somatostatin, bombesin and cholecystokinin-8 has been detected. According to the ultrastructural traits of the endocrine granules, three larval intestinal endocrine populations have been differentiated. 相似文献

In their ultradian (2- to 3-hr) feeding rhythm, common voles show intraindividual synchrony from day to day, as well as interindividual synchrony between members of the population, even at remote distances. This study addresses the question of how resetting of the ultradian rhythm, a prerequisite for such synchronization, is achieved. Common voles were subjected to short light-dark cycles (1 hr darkness with light varying between 0.7 and 2.5 hr); to T cycles (long light-dark cycles in the circadian range--16 hr darkness and 3-13 hr light); to light pulses (15 min) during different circadian and ultradian phases; and to addition of D2O to the drinking water (25%). Short light-dark cycles and D2O were also applied to voles without circadian rhythmicity, after lesions of the suprachiasmatic nuclei. In these experiments, four hypotheses on synchronization of ultradian rhythmicity were tested: (I) synchronization by a direct response to light; (II) synchronization via the circadian system with multiple triggers, here called "cogs," each controlling a single ultradian feeding bout; and (III and IV) synchronization via the circadian system with a single "cog," which resets an ultradian oscillator and either (III) originates directly from the circadian pacemaker, or (IV) is mediated via the overt circadian activity rhythm. Short light-dark cycles failed to entrain ultradian rhythms, either in circadian-rhythmic or in non-circadian-rhythmic voles; light pulses did not cause phase shifts; and in extreme T cycles no stable phase relationship with light could be demonstrated. Thus, Hypothesis I was rejected. Changes in the circadian period (tau) were generated as aftereffects of light pulses, by entrainment in various T cycles, and by the addition of D2O to the drinking water. These changes in tau did not lead to parallel, let alone proportional, changes in the ultradian period. This excluded Hypothesis II. Both in T-cycle experiments and in the D2O experiments with circadian-rhythmic voles, the phase of ultradian feeding bouts was locked to the end of circadian activity rather than to the most prominent marker of the pacemaker, the onset of circadian activity. This was not expected under Hypothesis III, but was consistent with entrainment via activity (Hypothesis IV). On the basis of these experiments, we conclude that the most likely mechanism of ultradian entrainment is that of a light-insensitive ultradian oscillator, reset every dawn by the termination of the activity phase controlled by the circadian pacemaker, which is itself entrained by the light-dark cycle. Neither in circadian-rhythmic nor in non-circadian-rhythmic voles was the period of the feeding rhythm lengthened by administration of D2O. Unilaterally microphthalmic duck (DUM) embryos studied in stage 39 were obtained by damaging the right eye in stage 17. The development between stages 19 and 39 was observed in samples. After prolonged incubation, one duck hatched and reached adulthood. In DUM embryos partial crossbeak develops. Both the upper and lower bills deviate lateralwards, the upper bill more than the lower. In stage 39 a small orbit is present on the treated side. In stained and cleared heads most of the elements of the skull (the bones surrounding the orbit, the brain-case, and the upper and lower bill elements) are translated in the direction of the rudimentary orbit on the treated side. The bills are twisted around each other at the tip. Measurements of external dimensions as well as those made in stained and cleared stage-39 DUM heads show elongation of the left part of the lower bill. Except for the crossed bills, the changes found in the embryos persisted in the adult. The findings support a hypothesis concerning the mutual influence of bills during morphogenesis. The coherence of the functional cranial components in the embryo is discussed. 相似文献

HSP47, a 47-kDa heat-shock protein (HSP), is a member of a group of HSPs with the unique characteristics of collagen binding as well as transformation sensitivity. The protein belongs to the serpin (serine protease inhibitor) superfamily as determined from its amino acid sequence homology. We have isolated and characterized the mouse HSP47 including about 1 kb of the 5'-flanking region. This gene spans about 7.8 kb, consisting of six exons separated by five introns. This exon-intron structure is different from other serpin family proteins. Southern blot analysis revealed the existence of a single copy of HSP47. The promoter region contains a TATA box, four Sp1-binding sites and one AP-1-binding site. A complete heat-shock element (HSE) was found between nucleotides (nt) -61 and -79. Furthermore, the heat inducibility was reproduced by transfecting mouse BALB/3T3 cells with a plasmid carrying cat under the control of the HSE-containing fragment (nt -197 and +38) of HSP47. Computer analysis of the promoter region did not show marked homology to other vertebrate promoters. 相似文献

By transplantation of parts of the neural plate (latter medulla oblongata) from Xenopus laevis (Daud.) to Hymenochirus boettgeri (Torn.) larval chimaeras were obtained, which showed donorlike rhythmical movements of the mouth and pharyngeal region, movements which the host species lacks. Bioconcentration curves of 2,4-dinitrotoluene(2,4-DNT) in carps (whole fish, liver, intestine and muscle) were investigated using semistatic system. For whole fish, its curve could be described as a gentle peak which began with a rise in concentration to summit or steady state, then declined and reached lower level followed by another steady state. For liver and intestine, their curves both contained two successive peaks, with the second peak followed by slight fluctuation. Bioconcentration factors of 2,4-DNT in whole fish during the first and second steady state were 9.15 and 4.15,(97.86 and 44.39, based on lipid content), respectively. By logarithmic plotting, two straight-lines with different slopes(3.6 and 0.1 d-1) were measured for elimination. According to peaky curves of 2,4-DNT in whole fish, liver and intestine, smaller BCFs than calculated BCFs based on the regression equations for inert chemicals, and large rate constants of elimination, biotransformation was inferred to have happened in tissues such as liver, intestine, and other tissues. Two metabolites were separated from liver and identified as 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene(4A2NT) and 2,4-diamino-toluene(2,4-DAT) on HPLC, their retention times were 23.1 and 8.8 min, respectively. In bioconcentration test of 2,4-DNT in liver, two metabolites and parent were determined at the same time at intervals, higher concentrations of 4A2NT and 2,4-DAT were found when level of 2,4-DNT declined. Such results demonstrated our inference that metabolism caused the declines in bioconcentration curves. A one-compartment model was set up to simulate the bioconcentration, in which biotransformation adhered to Delayed Enzyme-Catalytic Logarithmic Kinetics. This article describes the long-term consequences of successful cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and its influence on premature mortality in Finland, with special reference to North Karelia. Active community-based CVD prevention began in 1972 in the province of North Karelia (population, 180,000). Since 1977, active preventive work has been carried out nationwide, taking advantage of the experience from North Karelia, which continued as a demonstration area for integrated prevention of noncommunicable diseases. Comprehensive community-based interventions as part of WHO interhealth and CINDI programmes in North Karelia and nationwide aimed at changing the target risk factors and health behaviours (serum cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, diet) at the population level. Age-adjusted mortality rates for CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular disease, all cancers, lung cancer, accidents and violence, and all causes in the population aged 35-64 years from the pre-programme period (1969-71) to 1995 were the main measures of the outcome. Among men there was a great reduction in deaths from CHD, CVD, cancer, and all causes in the whole country. From 1969-71 to 1995 the age-standardized CHD mortality (per 100,000) decreased in North Karelia by 73% (from 672 to 185) and nationwide by 65% (from 465 to 165). The reduction in CVD mortality was of the same magnitude. Among men, CHD mortality decreased in the 1970s, as did lung cancer mortality in the 1980s and 1990s, significantly more in North Karelia than in all of Finland. Among women there was a great reduction in CVD (including CHD and stroke) mortality and all-causes mortality, but only a small reduction in cancer mortality. These results show that a major reduction in CVD mortality among the working-age population can take place in association with active reduction of major risk factors, with a favourable impact on cancer and all-causes mortality. 相似文献

The gas phase developed above spinach suspension cultures critically affected their growth and greening. Ethylene accumulation inhibited greening; this effect of ethylene was antagonised when the culture gas phase was enriched with carbon dioxide. Greening was enhanced by reducing the partial pressure of oxygen below the air level; this effect was observed when oxygen supply did not restrict growth. 相似文献

The hatching performance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) embryos was examined after 12-72-h storage at 4 and -2 degrees C using different concentrations of sucrose (0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 M or 3.42, 8.55, 17.10 and 34.2%), methanol (MeOH) (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 M or 1.6, 3.2, 4.8, 6.4, 8.0, 9.6 and 11.2%), or varying concentrations of methanol in 0.5 M (17.10%) sucrose. For sucrose, 0.5 M (17.10%) showed the maximum survival (41+/-1% (12 h) to 11+/-1.5% (72 h)) at 4 degrees C. No survival was observed at -2 degrees C with any concentration of sucrose. At both temperatures employed, hatching was higher with mixed combination of methanol (1.5 M or 4.8%) and 0.5 M (17.10%) sucrose (4 degrees C: 41+/-1.5% (12 h), 38+/-1.2% (72 h); -2 degrees C: 33+/-1.7% (12 h), 28+/-1.2% (72 h)) compared to methanol alone (4 degrees C: 38+/-1.5% (12 h), 35+/-2.5% (72 h); -2 degrees C: 31+/-2.5% (12 h), 25+/-2% (72 h)). The combination of 1.5 M (4.8%) methanol and 0.5 M (17.10%) sucrose produced the best results among all the concentrations tested at both temperatures. 相似文献

The emigratory behavior and locomotor activity of yellow-eyed (y/y), wild-type (+/+), and heterozygous (+/y) house flies was examined at 8 fc (86 lx) and 1600 fc (17,223 lx) light intensities. At 8 fc, emigration rate and activity of the y/y flies was similar to that of the +/+ and +/y flies. However, at 1600 fc, the y/y flies emigrated at twice the rate and showed an activity of about one-third that of the other genotypes. The behavior of the +/+ and +/y flies remained similar regardless of the experimental design or light intensity. The excessive neural stimulation by high-intensity light resulting from reduced shielding pigments led to behavioral modifications in the visual and tactile responses of the y/y flies. 相似文献
