Prostaglandin F2 alpha was used to induce estrus in postpartum dairy cows to decrease calving interval and time spent on heat checks. The amount of prostaglandin residue in milk after treatment also was investigated. Twenty-two control cows, checked for heat twice daily, were bred at estrus after 55 days postpartum. Sixty-three cows checked on days 55 to 60 were either bred if in estrus or treated with 30 mg of prostaglandin F2 alpha injected intramuscularly on day 60 and bred at induced estrus or at 75 h posttreatment. Twelve cows were in heat between days 55 and 60 and were bred. Twenty-nine of 51 treated cows were seen in estrus; all of these were bred and 51.7% conceived at this time. Treated cows had fewer days to first service than did controls, but days open were not different, 105.7 versus 101.8. Fertility was similar. Controls required more heat checks than did treated cows (39 to 8.2). Milk from 17 cows at two milkings before and ten milkings after treatment had similar concentrations of prostaglandin (698 +/- 27 pg/ml) except for the first posttreatment milking when prostaglandin concentration almost doubled (1.293 +/- 143 pg/ml).  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to characterize early postpartum follicular dynamics in dairy cows in relation to their estrual activity and subsequent reproductive performance using 50 (26 primiparous and 24 multiparous) lactating Holstein cows. Ovaries and uterine horns of postpartum lactating cows were examined by ultrasonography 3 times weekly and continued until first services occurred after a 45-d voluntary waiting period. No differences were detected in fertility between primiparous and multiparous cows. In 40 of 50 cows, first postpartum ovulation was observed within 4 follicular waves, and the follicular wave patterns and ovarian cycles in most cows returned to normal as in cattle having normal estrous cycles after the second postpartum ovulation. Cows with the longest intervals from calving to first ovulation produced the most milk and also had prolonged intervals to first estrous activity. Differences in follicular dynamics before first ovulation altered intervals to first estrus, first service, and uterine involution, but these differences did not affect pregnancy rate, number of services, and days open. First postpartum insemination after 3 follicular waves tended to have greater pregnancy rates than those after 2 follicular waves. First inseminations at first estrus could produce greater pregnancy rates than those at subsequent periods of estrus.  相似文献

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone administered at breeding enhances fertility of dairy cows, so a study was designed to evaluate the mechanism for enhanced fertility following administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone at first postpartum breeding. Twenty-four cows were assigned randomly to one of two treatments, 100 micrograms of gonadotropin-releasing hormone intramuscular or saline vehicle intramuscular at insemination. Blood samples for luteinizing hormone assay were taken at 2-h intervals prior to breeding and .5-h intervals for 3 h after insemination. Composite morning milk samples for progesterone assay were collected for 30 days after insemination or until next estrus. Cows given gonadotropin-releasing hormone had higher luteinizing hormone concentrations in blood serum following treatment than cows given saline, 13.2 versus 3.0 ng/ml. There was no relationship between luteinizing hormone and subsequent conception. Progesterone for cows that became pregnant was higher throughout sampling days. Mean progesterone concentrations were 4.6 versus 2.2 ng/ml in pregnant and nonpregnant cows during the first 4 days after insemination. Cows treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone that conceived had higher progesterone than other cows, and that was evident at the first 4 days postbreeding.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine if calving intervals could be shortened and made less variable by using prostaglandin F2 alpha to control the occurrence of first services. Holstein cows (n = 348) were assigned at calving to four treatment groups. Control cows (n = 88) were inseminated at their first observed estrus after 40 d postpartum. Estrous cycles of the remaining cows were synchronized with prostaglandin F2 alpha to allow insemination (first services) 80 h after the second injection (n = 86), insemination at 80 h preceded by gonadotropin-releasing hormone at 72 h (n = 86), or insemination at 72 and 96 h (n = 88) after the second injection (51 to 57 d postpartum). By design, interval to first service was reduced to 57 d for treated cows (63 d for controls) and was less variable (12% of that for controls). Conception rate at first service was lower after timed inseminations than that of controls. Intervals to conception and subsequent calving were similar in all treated cows and controls. Of cows sampled, 23 of 176 (13%) failed to respond with luteolysis when progesterone in serum exceeded 1 ng/ml, and 26 of 176 (15%) had low concentrations of progesterone in serum and could not respond to prostaglandin F2 alpha. Poor response to timed inseminations may have occurred because only 72% of 176 cows sampled responded with luteolysis. The objective of this study was to determine whether organically complexed Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn would improve the reproductive performance and milk and milk component production in lactating dairy cows that began receiving bovine somatotropin in the ninth week of lactation. Holstein (n = 50) and Jersey (n = 10) cows were blocked by breed, lactation number, and incidence of retained fetal membranes. Two diets assigned within blocks and fed from parturition until 154 d of lactation were control or control supplemented daily with 26 mg of Co as Co glucoheptonate, 125 mg of Cu as Cu-Lys, 199 mg of Mn as Mn-Met, and 359 mg of Zn as Zn-Met. Cows were fitted with electronic pressure-sensing devices in the second week of lactation for detection of estrus. Ovarian structures were determined via transrectal ultrasonography at 7-d intervals from parturition until observation of the first corpus luteum. Blood samples were taken at 7-d intervals and analyzed for plasma concentrations of progesterone, insulin, and urea nitrogen. Onset of luteal activity was identified by progesterone concentrations > or = 1 ng/ml. Retained fetal membranes increased days to first estrus (detected via electronic estrous detection), first luteal activity, and first corpus luteum in control cows but not in supplemented cows. Days to first observed estrus were greater for control cows than for supplemented cows. Days to first service, days open, days from first service to conception, services per conception, milk yield, milk components, and somatic cell counts were similar for control and supplemented cows. Supplementation with complexed trace minerals effectively reduced days to first estrus.  相似文献

Thirty-six Holstein cows fed a corn silage-based ration and 34 fed an alfalfa-grass silage-based ration were assigned according to calving date to receive either 300 mg/head per day of synthetic beta-carotene in a gelatin capsule or an empty gelatin capsule daily for the first 100 days postpartum. Supplemental vitamin A was provided at 3919 IU/kg of ration dry matter. Cervix diameters for cows supplemented with beta-carotene were smaller at 21 days and 28 days postpartum. Days from parturition to first observed estrus were less when beta-carotene was added and less when corn silage was fed. Means of other reproductive traits were more favorable for cows treated with beta-carotene (fewer services per conception and shorter intervals between parturition and conception). Milk progesterone at 21 and 28 days postpartum was not affected by either roughage or beta-carotene treatment. Milk from cows receiving alfalfa-grass silage contained lower somatic cell concentrations than that produced by cows fed corn silage. Milk somatic cell concentrations were lower in both roughage treatment groups for cows supplemented with beta-carotene. No effects of roughage or beta-carotene on milk production or milk fat percentages were significant.  相似文献

The objective of this observational study was to evaluate the association of estrous expression within 40 days in milk (DIM) using a neck-mounted automated activity monitor (Heatime Pro; SCR Engineers Ltd.) with reproductive performance in lactating Holstein cows. A total of 2,077 cows (614 primiparous cows and 1,463 multiparous cows) from 5 commercial dairy farms were included in the statistical analyses. Activity data from the first 7 d after calving were excluded. An estrus event was defined as an activity change index ≥35 for more than 2 h. Cows were classified according to the number of estrus events from d 7 until d 40 postpartum into 3 categories: (1) no estrus event (Estrus0); (2) one estrus event (Estrus1), and (3) 2 or more estrus events (Estrus2). Generalized linear mixed models were used to analyze continuous and categorical data. Shared frailty models were used for time to event data. Overall, 52.7% of cows had no estrus event detected by an automated activity monitor system from d 7 until d 40 postpartum. Herd level prevalence of Estrus0 ranged from 37.5 to 58.4%. Estrous expression from d 7 until d 40 postpartum affected estrous duration and estrous intensity at first artificial insemination (AI). Cows in Estrus0 had the shortest duration (13.2 ± 0.33 h) compared with cows in Estrus1 (13.8 ± 0.36 h) and Estrus2 (14.8 ± 0.41 h). Cows in Estrus2 had a longer estrous duration at first postpartum AI compared with cows in Estrus1. Among Estrus0 cows, 46.2% had an estrus event with high intensity at first postpartum AI. Among cows in Estrus1 and Estrus2, 50.8 and 53.8% had an estrus event with high intensity at first postpartum AI, respectively. There was a significant difference between Estrus2 and Estrus0 and a tendency between Estrus0 and Estrus1. There was no difference between Estrus1 and Estrus2. For Estrus0, Estrus1, and Estrus2 cows, pregnancy per AI was 29.4, 30.9, and 37.8%, respectively. There was a significant difference between Estrus0 and Estrus2 and Estrus1 and Estrus2. There was no difference between Estrus0 and Estrus1. Estrous expression from d 7 until d 40 postpartum affected time to first AI and time to pregnancy. Compared with Estrus0 cows, cows in Estrus1 [hazard risk (HR) = 1.74] and Estrus2 (HR = 1.77) had an increased hazard of being inseminated within 100 DIM. There was no difference between Estrus1 and Estrus2. Median DIM to first AI were 70, 59, and 58 for cows in Estrus0, Estrus1, and Estrus2, respectively. Compared with Estrus0 cows, cows in Estrus1 (HR = 1.28) and Estrus2 (HR = 1.33) had an increased hazard of becoming pregnant within 200 DIM. There was no difference between Estrus1 and Estrus2. Median DIM to pregnancy were 127, 112, and 103 for Estrus0 cows, Estrus1 and Estrus2, respectively. In conclusion, cows with no estrous expression from 7 to 40 DIM had reduced estrous expression at first AI and inferior reproductive performance compared with cows that displayed estrous activity.  相似文献

Two estrus-synchronization programs were compared and factors influencing their success over a year were evaluated. All cows received a setup injection of PGF2alpha at 39 +/- 3 d postpartum. Fourteen days later they received GnRH, followed in 7 d by a second injection of PGF2alpha. Cows (n = 523) assigned to treatment 1 (modified targeted breeding) were inseminated based on visual signs of estrus at 24, 48, or 72 h after the second PGF2alpha injection. Any cow not observed in estrus was inseminated at 72 h. Cows (n = 440) assigned to treatment 2 received a second GnRH injection 48 h after the second PGF2alpha, and all were inseminated 24 h later. Treatment, season of calving, multiple birth, estrual status at insemination, number of occurrences of estrus before second PGF2alpha, prophylactic use of PGF2alpha, retained fetal membranes, and occurrence of estrus following the setup PGF2alpha influenced success. Conception rate was 31.2% (treatment 1) and 29.1% (treatment 2). A significant interaction occurred between protocol and estrual status at insemination. Cows in estrus at insemination had a 45.8% (treatment 1) or 35.4% (treatment 2) conception rate. The conception rate for cows not expressing estrus at insemination was 19.2% (treatment 1) and 27.7% (treatment 2). Provided good estrous detection exists, modified targeted breeding can be as successful as other timed artificial insemination programs. Nutritional, environmental, and management strategies to reduce postpartum disorders and to minimize the duration of postpartum anestrus are critical if synchronization schemes are used to program first insemination after the voluntary waiting period.  相似文献

Two experiments examined effects of GnRH administered within 3 h after onset of estrus (OE) on ovulation and conception in dairy cows. In experiment 1, 46 cows received either saline, 250 microg of GnRH, or 10 microg of the GnRH analogue, Buserelin. Cows were observed for estrus, blood samples were collected, and ovulations were monitored by ultrasound. In controls, 76% of cows had intervals from estrus to ovulation of < or = 30 h and 24% had intervals > 30 h. Treatment with either GnRH or GnRH analogue (data combined) increased magnitude of LH surges and decreased intervals from estrus to LH surge or to ovulation. Treated cows all ovulated < or = 30 h after OE. Among control cows, plasma estradiol concentrations before estrus correlated positively with amplitudes of LH surges. Higher plasma progesterone was observed in the subsequent estrous cycle in GnRH-treated cows compared to control cows with delayed ovulations. Experiment 2 included 152 primiparous and 211 multiparous cows in summer and winter. Injection of GnRH analogue at OE increased conception rates (CR) from 41.3 to 55.5% across seasons. In summer, GnRH treatment increased CR from 35.1 to 51.6%. Across seasons, GnRH increased CR from 36.0 to 61.5% in cows with lower body condition at insemination and GnRH increased CR (63.2 vs. 42.2%) in primiparous cows compared to controls. Use of GnRH eliminated differences in CR for cows inseminated early or late relative to OE and increased CR in cows having postpartum reproductive disorders. In conclusion, GnRH at onset of estrus increased LH surges, prevented delayed ovulation, and may increase subsequent progesterone concentrations. Treatments with GnRH increased conception in primiparous cows, during summer, and in cows with lower body condition.  相似文献

Fifty-two lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned to receive either a progesterone-releasing (2 g of progesterone) or a control-releasing intravaginal device (0 g of progesterone). Intravaginal devices were inserted on d 10 and removed on d 15 postpartum. Daily blood samples were collected from d 10 to 90 postpartum for subsequent determination of progesterone concentrations. Observations for estrus were conducted three times daily in a dirt paddock containing a testosterone-treated cow. Serum concentrations of progesterone in the progesterone-releasing intravaginal device group were elevated on d 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 compared with those of the control group. The days to first post-partum ovulation were similar between the treated and control groups, respectively (30.6 vs. 30.5 d). Also similar was the proportion of cows expressing estrus at first, second, and third postpartum ovulations (9/27 vs. 3/24, 14/23 vs. 15/21, and 14/21 vs. 9/15, respectively), length of the first postpartum estrous cycle (17.9 vs. 18.3 d), and peak serum concentrations of progesterone during the first estrous cycle (3.5 vs. 2.9 ng/ml). These data indicate that administration of progesterone early postpartum did not increase the proportion of cows expressing estrus at the first ovulation.  相似文献

Various factors influencing reproduction of 307 Holstein cows were evaluated. Sources of variation of several measures were estrous certainty, time of day of detected estrus and insemination, method of thawing semen, ease of cervix penetration, presence of clear mucus at insemination, service number, service sire, inseminator, age of cow, maximum ambient temperature on the service date, and milk yield. Interval to first service of older cows was longer than of younger cows and shorter for cows with higher milk yield. Conception rate was higher for inseminations before noon than after noon and tended to be lower at inseminations when milk yield was at the extremes (low or high). Rate of conception was similar for cows whether inseminated at early or later postpartum intervals. More services were required by cows that were inseminated when milk yield was at the extremes (low or high). Fewer days open were associated with fewer total services and younger age at conception. Cows inseminated with semen thawed in hot (65 degrees C, 7 to 10 s) or warm (35 degrees C, 30 s) water conceived earlier postpartum than did those inseminated with semen thawed in the cow. Submitting cows for insemination after detection of standing estrus, mounting activity, or less certain symptoms of estrus had no adverse effect on fertility or days open.  相似文献

Thirty-two primiparous Holsteins were assigned to receive 0, 5.15, 10.3, or 16.5 mg/d recombinant bST. Treatment began between 28 and 35 d postpartum and continued until 60 d prior to next expected calving or 400 d postpartum. Metabolic hormones and metabolites were measured in blood weekly during the first 10 wk of treatment, and progesterone was measured in milk twice weekly to assess ovarian activity until conception. Milk production (305 d, actual) was 8350 +/- 562, 8348 +/- 515, 9571 +/- 515, and 9070 +/- 515 for cows given 0, 5.15, 10.3, or 16.5 mg/d and did not differ statistically. Insulin, glucose, NEFA and blood urea nitrogen were not influenced by dose of bST. However, insulin-like growth factor-I increased linearly with dose of bST. Days from parturition to first detected estrus, days open, and services per conception did not differ among groups; however, days from parturition to first service increased with dose of bST. Rate of detection of estrus decreased with dose of bST, resulting in a longer interval to first insemination. The lower rate of detection of estrus in bST-treated cows may have been associated with reduced expression of estrus. Additional statistical analyses were conducted to determine the relationship between metabolism, milk production, and reproduction over all doses of bST. There was a negative correlation between 305-d milk yield and glucose (r = -.44) and insulin (r = -.46) concentrations during 30 to 100 d postpartum. In stepwise regression analyses, insulin accounted for 21% of the variance in 305-d milk yield. Glucose and NEFA accounted for 18% of the variance in days open, and there was a negative correlation (r = -.32) between glucose and days open. Two experiments were performed in two different herds to determine if utilizing prostaglandin F 2 alpha to induce estrus for first services would be effective in reducing the duration and variability of calving intervals. In Experiment 1, cows were assigned randomly as controls (n = 217) to be inseminated as they were detected in estrus (beginning d 42 to 53 postpartum depending on replicate) or treated with prostaglandin F2 alpha (n = 185). In Experiment 2, the same treatments were utilized, except control cows (n = 124) were inseminated at their first detected estrus after d 40 postpartum, and treated cows received either one injection of prostaglandin F2 alpha between d 54 and 63 (n = 116) or were given progesterone (via a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device) for 7 d, with the device removed 24 h after prostaglandin F2 alpha (n = 116). More cows were inseminated and pregnancy rates were higher within 5 d after treatment with prostaglandin F2 alpha, and interval from prostaglandin F2 alpha to first service was reduced compared with that of control cows. Duration and variation of calving intervals were unaffected in either experiment, despite the fact the elective waiting period was 6 to 23 d longer for treated cows than for controls. Prebreeding treatment with progesterone failed to improve conception rates, but the efficiency of estrous expression increased from 54% in prostaglandin F2 alpha-treated cows to 71% in those cows also receiving prebreeding progesterone. We conclude that prostaglandin F2 alpha was ineffective in improving reproductive performance of these herds under good herd management. However, prostaglandin F2 alpha offers the convenience of inseminating small groups of cows, controlling when breedings occur during the work week, and prolonging the elective waiting period without extending the calving interval.  相似文献

Nine hundred and twenty Holstein cows from 16 commercial dairy herds to evaluate three systematic breeding protocols: 14-d PGF2alpha, timed artificial insemination (AI), and GnRH-PGF2alpha, relative to AI following estrus detection without hormone intervention. The timed AI protocol involved GnRH, followed by PGF2alpha 7 d later and GnRH again 2 d after PGF2alpha, with AI 6 to 18 h after the second GnRH. The GnRH-PGF2alpha protocol consisted of GnRH followed by PGF2alpha 7 d later. Eight herds relied on visual observation to detect estrus, and eight herds utilized the HeatWatch estrus detection system. The average interval to first postpartum AI was shortest for the timed AI protocol (77.1 d) followed by the 14-d PGF2alpha protocol (81.6 d). There was no difference in days to first AI between the control (86.1 d) and GnRH-PGF2alpha (89.5 d) protocols. Percent pregnant per first AI did not differ among control (45.6%), 14-d PGF2alpha (43.7%), or GnRH-PGF2alpha (44.0%) protocols, but all protocols had a higher percent pregnant per first AI than the timed AI protocol (30.1%). Response to the GnRH-PGF2alpha protocol was limited because 44.0% of the cows submitted to the protocol were not detected in estrus < or = 10 d post-PGF2, administration and had an interval to first AI of 103.8 d. Cumulative percent pregnant by 120 d postpartum did not differ between control cows (53.1%) and hormonally treated cows (50.6%). Visual observation herds had a shorter interval to first postpartum AI (82.8 d) than the HeatWatch herds (84.8 d), with a higher overall rate of estrus detection across all protocols (75.3 and 67.6%, respectively).  相似文献

Cows (n = 210) were assigned to the following treatments: uninjected controls through 130 d postpartum; zero to high, uninjected through 60 d then injected with 14 mg of bST/d from 61 through 130 d postpartum; low, 5 mg of bST/d from 14 through 130 d postpartum; low to high, 5 mg of bST/d from 14 through 60 d then 14 mg of BST/d from 61 through 130 d postpartum; and high, 14 mg of bST/d from 14 through 130 d postpartum. Cows given 5 mg of bST/d (low and low to high treatments) yielded 1.2 kg of FCM/d more and high group cows yielded 1.3 kg of FCM/d more than control cows between 14 and 60 d postpartum. Cows given bST yielded 2.7 to 4.1 kg of FCM/d more than control cows during 61 to 130 d postpartum. Overall, control cows yielded 35.1 kg of FCM/d, and bST-dosed cows yielded 2.2 to 3.2 kg/d more FCM. Low group cows had improved pregnancy rate (80.0%) and conception rate (82.2%) compared with high group cows (57.2 and 60.3%). Neither pregnancy (70.0%) nor conception rates (71.5%) of controls differed from other groups. However, low group cows had first service conception rate of 57.8% compared with 34.3% for high and 38.2% for low to high group cows. First postpartum estrus was observed in high group cows about 13 to 16 d later than in low and low to high group cows, whereas low group cows came into first estrus 9 d sooner than controls. Cows of high group had lower body condition than controls (2.5 vs. 2.9), but other groups did not differ (2.7 to 2.9) from controls. Health was not adversely affected. Early postpartum bST administration at 5 mg/d increases FCM and, perhaps, reproductive performance of dairy cattle compared with herdmates.  相似文献

In a commercial dairy herd, 316 lactating Holsteins were studied to determine the percentage of anovular cows, to examine follicular sizes in anovular cows, and to compare synchronized ovulation (Ovsynch) versus detection of estrus on fertility of ovular and anovular cows. Ultrasonography examinations at 47 to 53 d and at 54 to 60 d postpartum were used to measure follicles and to classify cows as ovular or anovular. Anovular cows were identified as those with no detectable luteal tissue by ultrasonography and by low progesterone in blood samples collected weekly. Anovular cows included 28% of 122 primiparous cows and 15% of 194 multiparous cows. Of 64 anovular cows, 20% had follicles > or = 25 mm that might be considered cystic (4% of total cows), 58% had 15- to 24-mm follicles, and 22% had 9- to 14-mm follicles. Cows identified as ovular and anovular were randomly assigned within cyclic status to one of two artificial insemination (AI) strategies: 1) AI after detected estrus during 21 d, or 2) timed AI after a 10-d Ovsynch protocol. Weekly ultrasonography continued for 21 d to detect ovulations. For the Ovsynch sub-groups, 97% of ovular and 94% of anovular cows ovulated after the second GnRH injection. Within 21 d, spontaneous ovulations for the detection of estrus sub-groups were 42% of anovular cows vs. 89% of ovular cows. Conception rates were greater for ovular cows regardless of treatment, but conception rates between respective Ovsynch and estrus detection groups for ovular (32%, 35%) or anovular (9%, 11%) cows were similar. Although 20% of lactating cows were not cyclic by about 60 d postpartum, nearly all ovulated following Ovsynch. However, anovular cows had lower conception than ovular cows whether inseminated after detected estrous or after Ovsynch.  相似文献

Effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (100 micrograms) and time of artificial insemination on fertility, were examined in lactating dairy cows at first, second, and third services. Inseminations were either soon after detected estrus (0 h) or 12 h later, and cows were given gonadotropin-releasing hormone or saline after inseminations. Conception at first service was not improved by hormone treatment. But conception rates at repeat services were improved by nearly 21% when cows were treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone within 30 s after insemination. Inseminations soon after detection of estrus (0 h) followed by hormone treatment resulted in the highest conception rates for all services. Time of the insemination (0 versus 12 h) had no effect on conception. Administering gonadotropin-releasing hormone at repeat services should improve conception rate of lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

A study of 234 Holstein cows was conducted to determine if early postpartum treatments of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, prostaglandin F2 alpha, or both would alter frequency and occurrence of estrus and ovulation as well as subsequent fertility. Cows in groups 1 and 2 received gonadotropin-releasing hormone (200 micrograms) between 10 and 14 d postpartum, and cows in groups 3 and 4 received saline. Ten days later, cows in groups 2 and 3 received prostaglandin F2 alpha (25 mg), and cows in groups 1 and 4 received saline. Treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone reduced intervals to first ovulation and first detected estrus as well as increasing the proportion of cows with three or more ovulations before first service from 57% for saline-treated controls to 83%. Treatment with prostaglandin F2 alpha reduced intervals to second and third ovulation and shortened the first estrous cycle. Treatments for cows in groups 1 and 3 increased the proportion of cows having estrous cycles of normal duration. Interval from calving to conception was reduced by 43 to 48 d for cows with an abnormal puerperium treated with either gonadotropin-releasing hormone or prostaglandin F2 alpha compared with controls (group 4) and by 27 to 29 d overall in all cows in groups 1 and 3. Cows with normal or abnormal puerperium in groups 1 and 3 required 26 to 41% fewer services per conception than controls. We conclude that treatments of gonadotropin releasing hormone or prostaglandin F2 alpha, but not the treatment combination, improved fertility of dairy cows, especially those that experienced puerperal problems.  相似文献

Days dry may influence reproductive measures such as days to first postpartum ovulation, days open, and pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI). Holstein cows (n = 781) from an approximately 3,000-cow commercial dairy operation were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments with different targeted dry period (DP) lengths. Treatments were 1) a traditional DP of 55 d (T) or 2) a shortened DP of 34 d (S). All dry cows on T were fed a low-energy diet until 35 d before expected calving, and then at 34 d before expected calving, cows on T and S were fed a moderate energy diet until parturition. After parturition, all cows consumed the same diets that included a postcalving diet followed by a lactation diet. Actual days dry for each treatment were close to expected values, 34 and 56 d for S and T, respectively. Median days until first postpartum ovulation occurred sooner for S compared with T (35 vs. 43 d). The percentage of cows that were classified anovular by 70 d in milk (DIM) was more than 2-fold greater for cows on T than S (18 vs. 8%). Cows received AI after standing estrus starting at d 45, and the percentage of cows pregnant at 70 DIM tended to be greater for S than T; younger cows were similar (20.2 vs. 18.8%), but there was a difference between S and T in older cows (20.3 vs. 10.6%). Similarly, median days open tended to be fewer for cows on S than T. At 300 DIM, 85% of cows in both treatments were pregnant. Combining data from first and second service, pregnancies per AI were greater in older cows on S than T (32 vs. 24%). Thus, shortening the DP appeared to increase reproductive efficiency in older cows by shortening time to first ovulation, reducing numbers of anovular cows, and improving fertility. Future studies at more locations with varying reproductive management strategies are needed to confirm and provide the mechanistic basis for these results.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate the effect of 2 doses of PGF injected early postpartum on uterine involution, serum concentration of acute phase proteins at 12 d postpartum, and fertility in Holstein cows with acute puerperal metritis. Only cows diagnosed with retained fetal membranes and metritis and treated with ceftiofur hydrochloride for 5 d were used in the study. Two hundred cows were assigned randomly to be treated (n = 100) or to serve as controls (n = 100). Treatment consisted of 2 i.m. injections of PGF 8 h apart on d 8 postpartum. A subsample of 90 cows was selected randomly (45 treated cows; 45 controls) to evaluate uterine diameter using ultrasonography, uterine score, and serum concentrations of acute phase proteins at 12 d postpartum. The outcome variable for all cows was conception rate at first service. Postpartum, primiparous, treated cows had smaller uterine diameters and lower uterine scores than controls. Cows with a uterine diameter <5.1 cm at 12 d postpartum were 5.5 times more likely to conceive at first service than cows with larger uterine horn diameter. Treatment significantly reduced the concentrations of serum α1-acid glycoprotein. Within primiparous cows, treatment also increased conception at first service by 17%. It was concluded that 2 doses of PGF 8 h apart at 8 d postpartum in primiparous cows with acute puerperal metritis decreased the diameter of uterine horns and serum concentration of α1-acid glycoprotein at 12 d postpartum and increased the conception rate at first service.  相似文献
