The ablative performance of aluminum silicate ceramic fiber (ASF) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) filled silicone rubber composites prepared through a two‐roll mill was examined. The properties of the composites were investigated by thermogravimetry, thermal conductivity measurements, and oxyacetylene torch testing. After the material was burnt, the structure and composition of the char were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the ablation test showed that the ablation resistance improved greatly in an appropriate filler scope. Combined with SEM, it was proven that a firm, dense, and thermal insulation layer, which formed on the composites surface during the oxyacetylene torch test, was a critical factor in determining the ablation properties. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the thermal stability of the composites was enhanced by the incorporation of ASF and CaCO3. The thermal conductivity measurements showed that the silicone rubber composites had a very low thermal conductivity ranging from 0.206 to 0.442 W m?1 K?1; this significantly prevented heat from transferring into the inner matrix at the beginning of the burning process. The proportion of 20/40 phr (ASF/CaCO3) was optimum for improving the ablation resistance of the silicone rubber composites. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Hot vulcanised silicone rubber composites filled with polyarylacetylene (PAA) prepolymer or carbon fibre (CFs) are prepared. The residual weight, mechanical properties and ablation property of the composite are tested. The results show that the incorporation of PAA into silicon rubber can obviously increase the residual weight of the resulting composite. The addition of PAA or CFs has improved the hardness of the composites. The tensile stress and elongation at break of the composite are found increased initially and then decreased with the increasing of the concentration of PAA. PAA and CFs can greatly improve the ablation properties of the composites. The ablated surface contains SiO2, SiC and/or Si, which hinder the oxygen diffusion and the thermal conduction, and consequently prevent the decomposition and oxidation of the composite. The crack is a crucial factor determining the thermal conduction of the ablation layer when exposed to the oxyacetylene torch.  相似文献

In this article, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and ammonium pentaborate (APB) were introduced to liquid silicone rubber with an aim of building rich-porous char structure in situ, thereby improving thermal insulation properties. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that the incorporation of APP greatly increased the char residue of the composites. Oxy-acetylene torch tests showed that the addition of either APP or APB powders effectively enhanced the ablation resistance of the composites, whereas Shore A hardness tests revealed that the APP-containing composites exhibited a higher hardness than APB-filled counterparts. The linear ablation rates of composites with 40 phr APP or APB were reduced by 34.16% and 36.19%, respectively, when compared with the control sample. The maximum back-face temperatures of composites with 40 phr APP or APB was reduced to as low as 73°C. The APP-containing composites exhibited superior ablation resistance, considering both the linear ablation rate and the mechanical properties of char layer. In addition to SiO2, SiC, and C, B2O3 was produced in the APB composites, as characterized by XRD and Raman analysis. Combined with SEM, it was proven that the formation of a firm, continuous, rich-porous and thermal insulation char layer was advantageous to improve the ablation and insulation properties.  相似文献

High-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber composites are highly desirable as outdoor insulating materials due to their immense thermal and electrical performance. The aim of this work is to study the role of co-combined fillers (modified fumed silica [MFS], titanium dioxide [TiO2], with graphene [G]) on electrical and thermal properties of silicone rubber (S) composites. The dielectric response of S/MFS_10 phr and S/TiO2_20 composites tailored with 2 phr G was characterized by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The hybrid filler/composites were found to show higher thermal stability when 2 phr G was added. In addition, a low quantity of G filler was found to slightly increase the AC dielectric breakdown strength of the S/MFS_10 and S/TiO2_20, where an improvement of 3 and 5% was found, respectively. Several steps were observed in the thermal decomposition of the S rubber composites by thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Our findings revealed great potentials for fabricating hybrid-filler/silicone rubber composites with enhanced electrical and thermal properties for outdoor insulating applications.  相似文献

In this work, transient thermal response and ablation behavior of liquid silicone rubber composites containing fluxing/ceramic forming fillers were investigated under different heat flows using an oxyacetylene flame. The results indicated that the introduction of zinc borate (ZB) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) effectively reduced the temperature at various depths of the samples, and they improved the thermal insulation properties and lowered pyrolysis rates. The above finding was attributed to the heat absorption arising from water release and melt filling as well as the vitrified reaction of solid melt due to the decomposition of ZB. Besides, the melting and exfoliation of Al2O3 and the formation of aluminum silicate (Al2SiO5) caused heat absorption effect. Additionally, the mass ablation rates and line ablation rates increased with rising heat flows coupling with a decrease of compressive strength of the char layers. In a nutshell, the effect of adding ZB/Al2O3 on the thermal insulation behavior of epoxy-modified vinyl silicone rubber (EMVSR) composites under different heat flows was elucidtaed. This work served as a reference for the design and preparation of flexible ablative materials for thermal protection applications.  相似文献

Silicone rubber has good heat resistance, but its mechanical properties are poor. To improve the mechanical properties of the silicone rubber, the carbon fiber / silicone rubber composites were prepared in this paper, in which the silicone rubber was used as the matrix, the high-performance carbon fiber (CF) treated with coupling agent is used as the reinforcement. The best composite formulation, the types and content of coupling agent are determined by testing mechanical properties of the composites. The morphology structures of the composites were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the compatibility between carbon fiber and silicone rubber was studied by infrared spectrum analysis (IR), dynamic thermal mechanical analysis (DMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the best composite formulation is silicone rubber of 100 phr, carbon fiber of 12 phr, coupling agent KH550 of 2.5 phr. The best first curing conditions are at 175 °C under 10 MPa for 30 min, the postcuring conditions are at 200 °C for 2h. The compatibility between carbon fiber treated with KH550 and silicon rubber is the best by SEM, IR, DMA and XPS analysis, and confirm that the coupling agent KH550 plays a compatilizer role in the preparation process of the carbon fiber/silicone rubber composites.  相似文献

Reactive high vinyl silicone oil (HVSO) was selected to prepare the ceramic silicone rubber composites. The effects of HVSO on the mechanical properties and thermal stabilities of ceramic silicone rubber composites were investigated. The structures of the cross‐linked network of silicone rubber with or without HVSO were studied. The intermolecular space of silicone rubber was enlarged, and the cross‐linked point was concentrated by addition of HVSO, which was demonstrated by cross‐linking densities, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The cross‐linked network model was formed with the slipping of the cross‐linked points along with the silicone rubber chain. Mechanical properties of composites were enhanced by the formation of this cross‐linked network. The tear strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break of the composites were increased by 18.5%, 13.2%, and 37.4% by the adding of 2 phr HVSO, respectively. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. In this study, an effort has been made to improve the mechanical, thermal, and ablation performance of carbon-phenolic (C-Ph) composites. The ZrO2, SiC, and ZrO2/SiC hybrid fillers were synthesized using sol-gel method followed by individual incorporation into C-Ph composites. The thermal stability and flexural strength of these C-Ph composites were analyzed using thermogravimetry analysis and three-point bending test, respectively. A significant improvement in the flexural strength and modulus of the reinforced C-Ph composites was observed and also exhibited the higher thermal stability. The oxyacetylene flame test was conducted to measure the ablation behavior of these filler reinforced C-Ph composites under a heat flux of 4.0 MW/m2 for 60 seconds. ZrO2/SiC0.5 reinforcement in the C-Ph composite decreased the linear and mass ablation rates by 46% and 22%, respectively when compared with pure C-Ph composite. The surface morphology analysis revealed that the burnt composite covered with the ZrC ceramic phase and SiO2 bubble-like structure, which could have improved the ablation resistance of composites. These results were found well within the acceptable range when using the surface energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.  相似文献

In this study, a novel aluminum phosphate (AlPO4) heat‐resistant layer reinforced with aluminum silicate fiber (ASF) was successfully compounded on a poly(ether sulfone) (PES) matrix via the preparation process of high‐temperature heat treatment and vacuum hot‐pressing sintering technique. The influence of the ASF content on the morphology, thermal, mechanical, and dielectric properties of the as‐fabricated aluminum silicate fiber reinforced aluminum phosphate–poly(ether sulfone) (ASF/AlPO4–PES) layered composite was investigated. The results reveal that the incorporation of aluminum silicate fiber/aluminum phosphate (ASF/AlPO4) heat‐resistant layer can significantly improve the thermal stability and mechanical performances of the PES matrix composites. Compared with the pristine PES, the ASF/AlPO4–PES layered composite containing 8.0 wt % ASF exhibited better high‐temperature resistance properties (300 °C) and a lower thermal conductivity (0.16 W m?1 K?1). Furthermore, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent of this PES matrix composite decreased to 2.16 and 0.007, respectively. Meanwhile, the frequency stability of the dielectric properties for the ASF/AlPO4–PES layered composites was remarkably enhanced with increasing ASF addition at frequencies ranging from 102 Hz to 5 MHz. This was attributed to the existence of microscopic pores within the ASF/AlPO4 layer and the strong interfacial bonding between the ASF/AlPO4 layer and the PES matrix. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hollow glass microbead/silicone rubber composite coatings were prepared to improve the heat-resistance and mechanical properties of silicone rubber-based composites, using CE modified SR as the matrix and HGM as the filler. The microscopic morphology and thermal stability of the composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), respectively. The results showed that the thermal stability of the composites increases with the increase of filler content. For the composite sample with a HGM mass content of 16.7%, the initial decomposition temperature (T5) is 408°C, which is 84°C higher than that of silicone rubber. The low density and high sphericity of HGM make it easier to uniformly disperse in the polymer matrix. In addition, compared to silica, which is commonly used as an inorganic filler, the lower thermal conductivity of HGM is also beneficial for achieving better thermal shielding effect. It is confirmed that the insufficient thermal stability of the polymer matrix above 400°C can be compensated for by the properly dispersed inorganic fillers. Therefore, the thermal stability of the composite is improved by the synergistic effect of modified heat-resistant matrix and inorganic filler.  相似文献

Nickel zinc ferrite (Ni-ZnFe2O4)-filled natural rubber (NR) composite was prepared at various loading of ferrite. The tensile properties included in this study were tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation at break. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites increased up to 40 parts per hundred rubber (phr) of ferrite and then decreased at higher loading whereas the tensile modulus was increased gradually with increasing of ferrite loading. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the wettability of filler in rubber matrix. From the observation, the increase of filler loading reduced the wettability of the filler. Thermal stability of the composites was conducted by using a thermogravimetry analyser (TGA). The incorporation of ferrite in NR composites enhanced the thermal stability of NR composites. The swelling test results indicate that the swelling percentage of the composites decreased by increasing of ferrite loading. The initial permeability, μi and quality factor, Q of magnetic properties of NR composites achieved maximum value at 60 phr of ferrite loading for frequency range between 5000–40,000 kHz. The maximum impedance, Z max of the NR composites was at the highest value at 80 phr ferrite loading for frequency range between 200–800 MHz.  相似文献

The effect of Borax on the mechanical and ablation properties of three different ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) compounds containing 20 phr carbon fiber, 20 phr Kevlar or 10 phr/ 10 phr carbon fiber/ Kevlar was investigated. All formulations contained 30 phr fumed silica powder and 10 phr paraffinic oil. It was found that adding Borax to the composite samples containing carbon fiber or Kevlar fiber or their mixture with an equal ratio can increase the tensile strength, elastic modulus and hardness with a slightly decrease in the elongation at break of the rubber samples. The results of thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) on the various samples showed significant increase in the char yield at 670°C by adding Borax to the rubber compounds. Moreover, ablation resistance of samples was also improved by increasing Borax content. Meanwhile, density and thermal conductivity of the insulator were also reduced up to about 10% when the carbon fiber was replaced with the Borax. The results indicated that composites containing Kevlar have high storage modulus and produce compact and stable char. EPDM rubber composite containing Borax (20 phr), carbon fiber (10 phr), and Kevlar (10 phr) showed thermal and ablative properties comparable with those of the asbestos‐ filled EPDM. The thermal conductivity and ablation rate of the above‐ mentioned sample were 0.287 W/m/K and 0.13 mm/s respectively. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41936.  相似文献

In order to improve the ablation resistance of C/C-ZrC-SiC composites by reducing the damage of the protective oxide layer, novel "Z-pins like" silicon rods, which were designed and fabricated by liquid phase sintering, were utilised as a dissipative agent. The microstructure evolution and thermal dissipation behaviour were investigated after ablating above 2500 °C for 300 s. After the "Z-pins like" silicon rods were implanted, the anti-ablative property of the C/C-ZrC-SiC composites was drastically improved by the dissipative thermal protection mechanism. The linear ablation rate of the "Z-pins like" silicon rod-reinforced C/C-ZrC-SiC composite was -0.28 μm/s, which is 112.72% lower than the unmodified composite. Additionally, the actual ablative temperature dropped approximately 357 °C, which enabled abundant SiO2 to remain in the ablation centre. Furthermore, a dense SiO2-rich oxide layer with a low oxygen diffusion coefficient is formed that covers the entire ablative surface.  相似文献

Biomorphic SiC composites were fabricated by infiltration of liquid Si into a preform fabricated from medium-density fiberboard (MDF). The phase compositions, microstructures, oxidation behaviors, and ablation properties of the composites were investigated. The composites were oxidized at elevated temperatures (up to 1450 °C) in air to study their oxidation behavior. Pores and cracks initially formed from the oxidation of residual carbon, followed by melting of residual Si. The ablation resistance of a composite was gauged using an oxy-acetylene torch. The formation of a SiO2 layer by the oxy-acetylene flame improved the ablation resistance because molten SiO2 spread over the ablated surface and partially sealed the pores, thus acting as an effective barrier against the inward diffusion of oxygen.  相似文献

C/C–ZrC–SiC composites with continuous ZrC–SiC ceramic matrix were prepared by a multistep technique of precursor infiltration and pyrolysis process. Ablation properties of the composites were tested under an oxyacetylene flame at 3000 °C for 120 s. The results show that the linear ablation rate of the composites was about an order lower than that of pure C/C and C/C–SiC composites as comparisons, and the mass of the C/C–ZrC–SiC composites increased after ablation. Three concentric ring regions with different coatings appeared on the surface of the ablated C/C–ZrC–SiC composites: (i) brim ablation region covered by a coating with layered structure including SiO2 outer layer and ZrO2–SiO2 inner layer; (ii) transition ablation region, and (iii) center ablation region with molten ZrO2 coating. Presence of these coatings which acted as an effective oxygen and heat barrier is the reason for the great ablation resistance of the composites.  相似文献

Abstract

Rubber ferrite composites have the unique advantage of mouldability, which is not easily obtainable using ceramic magnetic materials. The incorporation of mixed ferrites in appropriate weight ratios into the rubber matrix not only modifies the dielectric properties of the composite but also imparts magnetic properties to it. Mixed ferrites belonging to the series of Mn(1 -x)Znx Fe2 O4 have been synthesised with different values of x in steps of 0·2, using conventional ceramic processing techniques. Rubber ferrite composites were prepared by the incorporation of these pre-characterised polycrystalline Mn(1 -x)ZnxFe2 O4 ceramics into a natural rubber matrix at different loadings according to a specific recipe. The processability of these elastomers was determined by investigating their cure characteristics. The magnetic properties of the ceramic fillers as well as of the rubber ferrite composites were evaluated and the results were correlated. Studies of the magnetic properties of these rubber ferrite composites indicate that the magnetisation increases with loading of the filler without changing the coercive field. The hardness of these composites shows a steady increase with the loading of the magnetic fillers. The evaluation of hardness and magnetic characteristics indicates that composites with optimum magnetisation and almost minimum stiffness can be achieved with a maximum loading of 120 phr of the filler at x=0 4. From the data on the magnetisation of the composites, a simple relationship connecting the magnetisation of the rubber ferrite composite and the filler was formulated. This can be used to synthesise rubber ferrite composites with predetermined magnetic properties.  相似文献

The ablation properties and mechanisms (under oxyacetylene combustion) together with thermal shock behavior of SiCf/Cf/SiBCN ceramic composites were investigated. The solid ablation products are primarily amorphous SiO2 and cristobalite. The primary ablation mechanisms include fiber and ceramic matrix oxidation, evaporation of B2O3 (l) and SiO2 (l), and mechanical exfoliation. SiCf/Cf/SiBCN has a significantly low mass ablation rate and a desirable linear ablation rate. The combination of crack deflection caused by SiC and carbon fibers, fiber pull-out and debonding improves thermal shock resistance and thus leads to the absence of surface macrocracks.  相似文献

Carbon–carbon (C–C) composites are ideal for use as aerospace vehicle structural materials; however, they lack high‐temperature oxidation resistance requiring environmental barrier coatings for application. Ultra high‐temperature ceramics (UHTCs) form oxides that inhibit oxygen diffusion at high temperature are candidate thermal protection system materials at temperatures >1600°C. Oxidation protection for C–C composites can be achieved by duplicating the self‐generating oxide chemistry of bulk UHTCs formed by a “composite effect” upon oxidation of ZrB2–SiC composite fillers. Dynamic Nonequilibrium Thermogravimetric Analysis (DNE‐TGA) is used to evaluate oxidation in situ mass changes, isothermally at 1600°C. Pure SiC‐based fillers are ineffective at protecting C–C from oxidation, whereas ZrB2–SiC filled C–C composites retain up to 90% initial mass. B2O3 in SiO2 scale reduces initial viscosity of self‐generating coating, allowing oxide layer to spread across C–C surface, forming a protective oxide layer. Formation of a ZrO2–SiO2 glass‐ceramic coating on C–C composite is believed to be responsible for enhanced oxidation protection. The glass‐ceramic coating compares to bulk monolithic ZrB2–SiC ceramic oxide scale formed during DNE‐TGA where a comparable glass‐ceramic chemistry and surface layer forms, limiting oxygen diffusion.  相似文献

To meet the ultrahigh temperature requirements of a thermal protection system, an ultrahigh temperature phase of ZrB2 was introduced into a SiBCN matrix that was fabricated using a reactive spark plasma sintering method. The thermal ablation behavior of SiBCN-Zr composites was investigated using an oxyacetylene flame test. The test results indicated that the ablation behavior of the modified ceramic composites was significantly improved over that of a monolithic SiBCN ceramic. The linear and mass ablation rates of the SiBCN-Zr material were found to be 0.004 mm/s and 4.75×10−4 g/s, which was indicative of excellent ablation resistance. Analysis of the material after thermal ablation testing showed that ablation products mainly consisted of the ZrSiO4, SiO2 and ZrO2 phases. A reaction occurred between the SiO2 and ZrO2 phases in the central region of the ceramic forming ZrSiO4 that protected the material from further thermal damage. A loose and porous oxidation layer was found from the matrix based on analysis of a cross-section image.  相似文献
