Abstract— We demonstrate a novel TN‐display compensation film with excellent contrast and minimal color shift, meeting the requirements for avionics displays. The film configuration was identified via extensive computer modeling. The experimental implementation based on ROLIC's LPP/LCP (linearly photopolymerizable polymer/liquid‐crystal polymer) technology results in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Abstract— The first implementation of active‐matrix addressing on a BiNem bistable nematic liquid‐crystal display has been demonstrated. Compared to previous passive‐matrix addressing, major improvements have been made for the bistable mode: a smoother image refreshment, shorter refreshing frame time compatible with that of high‐resolution e‐book displays, the use of a touch screen for interactive functions such as hand‐writing, a virtual keyboard, improved functionality for scrolling menus, partial refreshment, etc. On the same display but in the monostable mode, by using electrically controlled birefringence (ECB), the potential of displaying moving pictures at a rate of 25 images/sec, at an extended room temperature, has been demonstrated. In the ECB monostable mode, static images can be displayed down to ?20°C. A new transflective single‐polarizer optical mode has been developed to optimize the indoor and outdoor readability of the display. By lowering the surface reflection and enhancing the panel transmission, a contrast ratio of 94:1 and a transmittance of 17% have been achieved.  相似文献

Abstract— In this paper, many popular methods to study transflective liquid‐crystal‐displays (LCDs) have been discussed, and several new transflective LCD configurations with a single‐cell gap have been proposed. The traditional double‐cell‐gap method gives the best match of the transmittance/reflectance voltage curve (TVC/RVC) and also the widest viewing angle, but also brings the highest fabrication complexity. The single‐cell‐gap transflective LCD is much easier to fabricate and also shows a good match of TVC/RVC. A new methodology has been shown to find optimal configurations for single‐cell‐gap transflective LCDs. New configurations using multimode in a single pixel include twisted nematic (TN) optically compensated bend (OCB), TN electrically controlled birefringence (ECB), and TN low‐twisted nematic (LTN). TN and hybrid‐aligned nematic (HAN) modes have been investigated for single‐mode transflective LCDs. The results exhibit high contrast ratio, a good match of TVC/RVC, as well as wide viewing angle.  相似文献

Abstract— Wide‐view (WV) films for TN‐mode LCDs, which optimize the optical parameters of the polymerized discotic material (PDM) layer and cellulose triacetate (CTA) have been developed. The development concept of the WV film and realization of its concept in the past and for the future will be reviewed. In particular, the discotic molecular alignment control enabled the improvement of the contrast ratio at oblique viewing angles of TN‐mode LCDs. In addition, color shifts at oblique angles are important for large‐screen TN‐mode LCD monitors and LCD‐TV sets. To improve the color‐shift problem, new technologies have been developed.  相似文献

A new photometry to perform the viewing‐angle characterization for reflective‐type LCDs has been developed. The optics consists of a rotating ellipsoidal mirror and a 2‐D CCD camera. The information obtained by this photometry includes the viewing‐angle characteristics of reflectance, contrast ratio, and chromaticity coordinates, which are comparable to gonioscopic photometry in terms of accuracy. Both the illuminating polar angle and azimuth angle can be scanned. The measurement time for this method is as short as that for conoscopic photometry when using a 2‐D CCD camera. An instrument equipped with light‐polarizing devices is already available. If analytic software was available, viewing‐angle characterization could be determined by a polarization analysis.  相似文献

We have mass production on one kind of liquid crystal display (LCD) device with hybrid viewing‐angle (HVA), which can be switched between the wide viewing‐angle (WVA) and narrow viewing‐angle (NVA) by one button. This device adopts the single cell design that with lower cost, and utilizes the optical properties of electrically tilted LC to achieve the function of NVA display. An issue has received less attention in the past and been indeed found in the production process. It is that the off‐axis color shift will appear in NVA mode. We put forward one method to improve this issue here, which is combined with the concepts of Gray Frame Insertion (GFI) and Impulse‐type driving. By switching the voltage between two different γ values, the color shift will be perfected on the produce.  相似文献

Abstract— A simple method for determining the cell gap and pretilt angle of a vertically aligned reflective liquid‐crystal display has been developed. By extrapolating the phase‐retardation curve of the VA—LC cell in the high‐voltage regime, we can determine the cell gap. With this value for the cell gap and the low‐voltage part of the phase‐retardation curve, we can determine the pretilt angle.  相似文献

Abstract— Cyclic block copolymers (CBCs) are a new class of optical polymers made by fully hydrogenating block copolymers of styrene and conjugated diene. This class of materials has excellent optical transparency, photostability, and good thermal resistance. By changing the copolymer composition and the resulting block‐copolymer morphology, a unique set of birefringence properties can be achieved. The focus of this work was to study various sources of birefringence in block copolymers using a series of model CBC materials. One particularly interesting finding relates to the development of an ultra‐low‐phase‐retardation CBC film. Unlike the conventional approach of using an additive or blend, a CBC film prepared by melt extrusion can readily achieve near‐zero retardation in both the film plane and thickness direction. This nearly isotropic CBC film is useful as a polarizer protection film in flat‐panel displays. When used as the inner protective layer of a polarizer, CBC film helps to reduce the color shift of IPS‐LCDs at oblique angles and offer a wider viewing angle.  相似文献

Abstract— 3‐D cross‐talk typically represents the ratio of image overlap between the left and right views. For stereoscopic LCDs using shutter‐glasses technology, 3‐D cross‐talk for stereoscopic LCD TV with a diagonal size of 46 in. and vertical alignment (VA) mode was measured to change from 1% to 10% when the stereoscopic display is rotated around the vertical axis. Input signals consist of the left and right images that include patterns of different amounts of binocular disparity and various gray levels. Ghost‐like artifacts are observed. Furthermore, intensities of these artifacts are observed to change as the stereoscopic display is rotated about the vertical axis. The temporal luminance of the LCD used in stereoscopic TV was found to be dependent on the viewing direction and can be considered as one cause of the phenomenon of angular dependence of performance for stereoscopic displays.  相似文献

Abstract— A wide‐view transflective liquid‐crystal display (LCD) capable of switching between transmissive and reflective modes in response to different ambient‐light conditions is proposed. This transflective LCD adopts a single‐cell‐gap multi‐domain vertical‐alignment (MVA) cell that exhibits high contrast ratio, wide‐viewing angle, and good light transmittance (T) and reflectance (R). Under proper cell optimization, a good match between the VT and VR curves can also be obtained for single‐gamma‐curve driving.  相似文献

Abstract— A 32‐in. IPS‐LCD with a significantly wide‐viewing‐angle performance has been developed using a new optical compensation method. It provides a contrast ratio of over 80:1 at all viewing angles, which enhances its color saturation at oblique angles. According to our study, it is important to shorten the path of the optical compensation in the Poincaré sphere. We have found an effective method using two retardation films, one with an Nz value larger than 0.5 and one with a value smaller than 0.5.  相似文献

Abstract— A new optical method for determining the pretilt angle ψ0, particularly on twisted‐nematic (TN) liquid‐crystal (LC) cells, is proposed. ψ0 was rapidly determined with good reproducibility on a TN‐LC cell by using a rotating analyzer optical system, a twist angle Φ, the azimuth of the director at a substrate, ϕ0, and the retardation Δnd as known values. The thickness d was also determined simultaneously with ψ0. ψ0 and d were determined within minutes. ψ0 was previously determined to be in the range of 0.1° with a standard deviation of 0.01°; this was obtained by repeating the measurement 50 times. The principle behind the determination and the experimental set up are described in detail.  相似文献

Abstract— An achromatic quarter‐wave film using one twisted‐nematic liquid‐crystal (TNLC) cell, a chromatic half‐wave plate, and a chromatic quarter‐wave plate is presented. The Jones matrix is used to calculate the optical properties of the system. An optimal algorithm is used for optimizing the configuration parameters. Simulation results indicate that the designed configuration is capable of turning a linearly polarized light into perfectly circularly polarized light in the wavelength range 400–700 nm. The manufacturing tolerance of the cell gap and twisted angle of the TNLC are good.  相似文献

Abstract— A 15‐in. TFT‐LCD with XGA resolution using thresholdless antiferroelectric liquid crystal (TLAF) has been developed. TLAF materials show V‐shaped switching and enable display of analog gray scale, wide viewing angle, and fast response. However, in the case that high‐resolution TFT‐LCDs using materials with large spontaneous polarization such as TLAF were driven by the conventional method, alternating current (ac) driving, the obtained contrast ratio was limited because of a sharp decline of holding voltage due to the growth of a depolarization field. In order to enhance the contrast ratio, a novel driving method referred to as quasi‐dc driving was proposed. In the quasi‐dc driving, the polarity of the applied voltage to liquid crystals inverts at certain intervals of several seconds. Moreover, the applied voltage and the charging time at the time of polarity inversion are increased more than the intended signals. By this method, the 15‐in. TFT‐LCD using TLAF with high contrast ratio (more than 100:1) and wide viewing angle was realized.  相似文献

Abstract— A highly bendable liquid‐crystal display was fabricated by using a multi‐functional elastomer substrate of self‐aligning LC molecules without any surface treatment. One of the two substrates is a plastic substrate while the other is a multi‐functional elastomer substrate produced by a replica‐molding technique. The multi‐functional elastomer substrate has pixel‐encapsulating walls that serve as spacers and provide mechanical stability and reproducibility against bending deformations. The highly bendable LCD demonstrates great flexibility, durability, and excellent electro‐optic performances in a highly bent state.  相似文献

We have developed a new microstructure film for wide viewing liquid crystal displays (LCDs). By attaching it to the surface of a conventional LCD, the viewing angle characteristics of LCD has drastically improved without causing a blur of the frontal image and a decrease in the contrast ratio under bright ambient light conditions. This film can be applied to various LC modes including twisted nematic and multidomain vertical alignment by changing its internal micrometer‐size 3D structure. Further, this film can be mass‐produced efficiently by self alignment roll‐to‐roll process.  相似文献
