Infectious bronchitis, Newcastle disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, avian influenza, and pneumovirus are the viruses that more frequently affect the respiratory tract of chickens. Because of the tendency to change its antigenic properties, infectious bronchitis is currently the viral disease present in most poultry producing areas of the world. New serotypes and variant strains are reported in several countries. Current commercially available vaccines do not always provide protection against new field isolates. Vaccination programs are constantly adjusted in an attempt to improve protection against this disease. Infectious laryngotracheitis has appeared in the broiler industry as a serious disease. Improved vaccines are needed to control the disease in broilers. In the U.S., the control of the highly pathogenic forms of avian influenza and the velogenic forms of Newcastle disease have been achieved by eradication. In other countries, effective vaccines have been used to control Newcastle and avian influenza. Avian pneumovirus infection is also an emerging disease of chickens and turkeys.  相似文献

From 1992 to mid-1996, a national survey of poultry diseases in Lebanon was conducted. This surveillance included meat breeder, layer breeder, commercial layer and chicken broiler flocks. The history, signs, lesions and laboratory tests of poultry were used in the diagnosis of prevalent poultry diseases. Culture techniques were used to screen for bacterial diseases; serological techniques and, to a lesser extent, culture techniques were used to diagnose viral diseases; and both serological and culture techniques were used to diagnose Mycoplasma infections. The outbreaks of diseases detected in broiler breeder flocks and the number of such flocks experiencing these diseases were as follows: femoral head necrosis (6), egg-drop syndrome (3), reovirus-associated malabsorption syndrome (3), synovitis (Mycoplasma synoviae infection) (7), swollen head syndrome (SHS) (3), tenosynovitis (viral arthritis) (1), lymphoid leukosis (3), avian encephalomyelitis (1), fowl pox (1) and aortic rupture (1). The disease outbreaks detected in layer breeders were as follows: SHS (2), bumble foot (2), egg-drop syndrome (3) and avian infectious bronchitis (IB) (1). The disease outbreaks detected in commercial layer flocks were as follows: egg-drop syndrome (5), avian infectious laryngotracheitis (2), avian IB (nephrogenic strain) (1), malabsorption (1), avian tuberculosis (Mycobacterium avium) (1), Marek's disease (1), fowl pox (1), Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Enteritidis infection (1), salpingitis (1) and Heterakis gallinae infestation (1). The disease outbreaks detected in broiler flocks were as follows: colibacillosis (40), infectious bursal disease (Gumboro disease) (15), malabsorption syndrome (8), avian infectious laryngotracheitis (8), paratyphoids (salmonellosis) (7), femoral head necrosis (8), SHS (6), avian mycoplasmosis (Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection) (6), synovitis (7), avian IB (6), botulism (1), avian encephalomyelitis (1) and gangrenous dermatitis (1). Diseases which occurred and which were reported for the first time in Lebanon were as follows: bumble foot, femoral head necrosis, avian IB (nephrogenic strain), malabsorption syndrome and SHS. This surveillance helped to establish baseline data concerning the predominant poultry diseases in Lebanon. Such information is a prerequisite for future regional and international collaboration to identify the source of the aetiological agents and to control their spread to neighbouring countries.  相似文献

The presence of Campylobacter and Salmonella on poultry meat products remains a significant public health concern. Previous research has indicated that feed withdrawal may significantly increase Salmonella contamination of broiler crops and that crop contents may serve as an important source of Salmonella carcass contamination at commercial processing. The present study evaluated the effect of preslaughter feed withdrawal on the incidence of Campylobacter isolation in crops of market-age commercial broiler chickens prior to capture and transport to the processing plant. The incidence of Campylobacter isolation from the crop was determined immediately before and after feed withdrawal in 40 7-wk-old broiler chickens obtained from each of nine separate broiler houses. Ceca were collected from broilers in six of the same flocks for comparison with the crop samples. Feed withdrawal caused a significant (P < 0.025) increase in Campylobacter-positive crop samples in seven of the nine houses sampled. Furthermore, the total number of Campylobacter-positive crops increased significantly (P < 0.001) from 90/360 (25%) before feed removal to 224/359 (62.4%) after the feed withdrawal period. Alternatively, feed withdrawal did not significantly alter the Campylobacter isolation frequency from ceca. Similar to our previous studies with Salmonella, the present results suggest that preharvest feed withdrawal increases the frequency of Campylobacter crop contamination and, thus, provides a source of Campylobacter contamination of carcasses at commercial processing.  相似文献

The effects of feeding diets containing 100 mg moniliformin (M)/kg of feed from culture material and 16 mg deoxynivalenol (DON)/kg of feed from naturally contaminated wheat were evaluated in growing broiler chicks from 1 day to 21 days of age. Body weight (BW), body-weight gain, and feed consumption were decreased by feeding M and M plus DON diets. Relative heart weight was increased by the M diet, whereas relative weights of proventriculus, gizzard, and heart were increased by the M plus DON diet. The M diet increased alanine transferase and aspartate transaminase activities and creatinine concentration and decreased mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The M and DON diet decreased glucose, hemoglobin, and MCHC. Histopathological lesions from the M diet were limited to the kidney and consisted of extensive renal tubular epithelial degeneration plus luminal mineralization. A moderation of the severity of lesions was seen in the tissues of the M plus DON-fed chicks, consisting of generally mild tubular epithelial degeneration. None of the parameters measured were affected by the DON diet. Results indicate additive or less-than-additive toxicity for most parameters when chicks were fed diets containing 100 mg M plus 16 mg DON/kg of feed. Although the concentration of M in this study was high compared with that reported for feedstuffs, additional information on the occurrence and toxicity of M will need to be collected in order to assess the importance of M to the poultry industry.  相似文献

Beta-adrenergic agonists have been shown to be capable of improving growth performance in poultry when added to the feed at 1.0 ppm. However, no reference has been made concerning the cardiovascular responses when one of these agents is added to the feed at a lower concentration during the whole production cycle. The aim of this paper was to assess the effects on the ascites syndrome of 0.25 ppm clenbuterol in the feed, throughout 52 d, in broiler chicks. Results showed a lack of difference in growth and feed conversion rate between the untreated control groups and the experimental group. There were differences in mortality due to the ascites syndrome, abdominal fat:body weight ratio, and ventricular index. A statistically significant positive correlation was also found between ventricular index and mortality rate (r = 0.98). If adequate withdrawal times are ensured, the use of clenbuterol at 0.25 ppm is suggested to reduce mortality due to the ascites syndrome in broilers.  相似文献

The rapid expansion and improvement in poultry production began during the mid-1930s. These enhanced by innovation in technology, science and management on different levels such as on artificial incubation, genetics, breeding, rearing, nutrition, disease control and processing technology. During the past 30 years the total egg production as well as poultry meat production has increased tremendously. The modern poultry industry oriented for high production and better quality at low cost, together with increasing claim of consumers for poultry meat and products, demand continuous efficient and goal oriented veterinary care. For this purpose, in many countries poultry health services supervised by veterinarians in co-operation with a central veterinary diagnostic laboratory, are established. Today the main duties of the poultry veterinarians have changed from therapeutic to prevention objectives. The tasks of the modern veterinary poultry specialists are described.  相似文献

Bacteriological monitoring of broiler breeder farms, the hatchery, rendering plant and animal feed mill during 1991 identified a number of potential cross-contamination hazards, such as the use of processed poultry proteins in the company feed mill and contamination of egg trolleys and trays, which may have led to widespread dissemination of Salmonella enteritidis within an integrated poultry organisation. Serological monitoring of the flocks suggested that, in most cases, substantial exposure to S. enteritidis infection occurred during the mid-rearing stage whereas routine bacteriological monitoring of poultry house litter and dust samples, and meconium samples taken in the hatchery identified infection only after the onset of the laying period. At least 10 phage types and six plasmid profile types of S. enteritidis were identified in historic submissions from the organisation including one apparently specific plasmid profile type that was distributed throughout the various parts of the company. During sampling for this investigation, most of these strains were not identified, and the number of plasmid profile types was reduced to a single common UK type.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of digestive disease in poultry involves the cellular events and reactions that result in a deviation from normal structure and function. To a degree, the differentiation of disease and normal in commercial poultry also involves an economic perspective. Factors external to the digestive tract may mimic digestive disease, including reductions in the density of various nutrients and feed refusal. Antinutritional factors, such as certain storage polysaccharides and proteins, are inaccessible to endogenous enzymes and are either indigestible or act as blockers of the digestion of other nutrients. Changes in digestive secretions that result in either excess or deficiency also influence digestive structure and function. Infectious agents and toxins that cause degeneration and necrosis are especially injurious because a series of critical repair events must occur in order to regain function. The consequences range from lethal injury of the host animal to diminished performance. The digestive tract has a large component of lymphoid tissue and impairment of the immune system influences the course of protozoan, bacterial and viral enteric diseases.  相似文献

Clostridium perfringens-associated necrotic enteritis (CPANE) is a common problem among rapidly growing broiler strains of chickens that are raised intensively in modern microenvironments. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of Aviguard and three other intestinal bioproducts (two normal gut flora [NGF] products and one probiotic product) in experimental CPANE in broiler chickens. Male broiler chicks were housed in the same environmentally controlled facility and given one of six treatments. The necrotic enteritis infection model (NEIM) used in the present study was effective in inducing CPANE intestinal gross lesions in broiler chickens. Equally important, Aviguard was found to be significantly more effective than either the other two NGF products or the probiotic for reducing gross lesions induced by the NEIM. In addition, Aviguard/NEIM-treated chicks ate more feed and had better feed efficiency than their NGF- or probiotic/NEIM-treated counterparts. Other significant differences among these four reconstituted microbial preparations were not found. Results from this study have additional importance because they further support the use of reconstituted microbial preparations as novel and effective alternatives to antibiotics that can reduce the severity of C. perfringens-associated necrotic enteritis challenge in broilers.  相似文献

Health programs based solely on vaccination and treatment regimens are often short-lived and unrewarding. The basis of any successful ongoing health program is a working health management system. The key to the success of the system is a functioning record system that generates information meaningful to management. The basic information generated should include morbidity and mortality data categorized by cause, the number of repeat treatments, and the number of chronic animals or railers. Goals should be set for each major category so that a database can be established for a feedlot operation to assess problems and progress. The most common reason for expectations not being achieved is factors that are largely beyond the control of the feed yard. Although attempts to address these factors should be periodically reviewed, attention to the health program and potential modifications are among the factors that we can control and modify as appropriate. BRD is the most important economic disease in the feedlot. Prearrival management is extremely important in assessing the risk category of incoming calves and in applying a preventive health strategy. Good husbandry, proper nutrition, proper pen maintenance, and selective immunization help to ensure that the cattle adapt quickly to the feed yard environment. Careful observation, timely effective therapy, and excellent hospital management increase the opportunity to produce cost-competitive, safe, and wholesome beef in a humane fashion with limited effects of the environment.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with a total of 432 broiler chicks to investigate the influence of supplementing different amounts of boron to practical corn-soybean meal diets. The birds were housed in batteries and had free access to feed and water. In Experiment 1, 144 1-day-old broiler chicks were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 5, 40, 80, or 120 ppm boron for 21 days. Female body weight was not influenced by the dietary treatments. However, males supplemented with 5 ppm boron were heavier and their tibias resisted more load than the control birds. Overall feed conversion was not influenced by boron. In Experiment 2, 288 1-day-old broiler chicks were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 60, 120, 240, or 300 ppm boron for 22 days. Male and female body weights of the 300-ppm group were lower than those of the control birds. Percentage tibia ash was highest with 300 ppm boron. No significant differences were found in intestinal tract weight (grams of intestine per 100 g body weight) among treatments. Boron concentration in the breast muscle and liver increased as dietary concentration of boron increased. Data collected in these two experiments indicated that consumption of diets containing up to 240 ppm boron from hatch to 21 days of age was not detrimental to broiler performance. Data were not conclusive on the need for supplemental boron in broiler diets based on corn and soybean meal.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the potential reservoirs for Campylobacter spp. that provide the initial sources involved with broiler chicken colonization during poultry production. We characterized the flagellin A gene (flaA) of the organism by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for 59 isolates of the bacterium provided during an epidemiological study. Isolates were obtained from three broiler production houses existing at separate locations. They were cultured and isolated from other (nonbroiler) domestic farm animals, wild birds, rodents, feed, farmers' boots, chicken feathers, and chicken intestinal materials. Eight distinctive flaA types were found in two of the houses. In one house, at least five flaA types (4, 6, 8, 15, and 21) were characterized from the poultry production environment, with three types isolated and identified from the chicken intestinal tract. flaA type 15 was found in flies, on boots, and in chicken intestinal samples. In another house, a distinctive diversity of flaA types existed (4, 7, 43, and 53). At least three flaA types found in samples from chicken intestinal tracts were also found in warm-blooded animals outside of the poultry house (domesticated animals, wild birds, and vermin).  相似文献

Six children with long-standing juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and radiographic evidence of severe hip joint damage were found 6 months to 5 years afterward to have radiographic evidence of significant hip joint space widening and remodeling of articular surfaces. The disease activity had decreased and hip joint function had improved in all children. Each child had received various antiinflammatory drugs, but no specific medication could be implicated in the improvement. Evidence from animal studies suggests that intensive physical therapy with emphasis on continued weight bearing may have been important in promoting healing in these children. It appears that restoration of severely damaged hip joints in JRA can occur when the disease activity is controlled. Restoration may be favored by a child's greater potential for bone remodeling and by vigorous physical therapy with emphasis upon continued ambulation.  相似文献

Rapid growth problems: ascites and skeletal deformities in broilers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Over the last 40 yr, genetic selection for rapid growth and improved feed efficiency has been very effective in meat-type poultry. Combined with changes in the feed that have increased both the nutritional and physical density to encourage a high nutrient intake, growth rate has more than doubled. The effect of genetic selection for high muscle to bone ratio and high calorie intake of a ration that supplies all nutritional requirements causes significant mortality from cardiovascular disease. In the chicken, sudden death syndrome (flip-over) and pulmonary hypertension syndrome resulting in ascites are the most important. Ruptured aorta, spontaneous turkey cardiomyopathy (round heart), and cardiomyopathy causing sudden death produce high mortality in turkeys. Rapid growth induced by high nutrient intake alone can cause severe lameness, bone defects, and deformity, as these problems are seen in animals that have not been selected for rapid growth: dogs, horses, pigs, ratites and wild birds kept in zoologic gardens. In meat-type poultry, growth-related disease can be reduced or eliminated by reducing feed intake without affecting final body weight. Rapid growth alone may not be the pathogenic mechanism that results in cardiovascular or musculoskeletal defects. Metabolic imbalance induced by high nutrient intake may cause some of the conditions. These metabolic problems might be corrected without reducing growth rate.  相似文献

Economic values in broiler breeding   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objectives of this study were to derive economic values in broiler breeding and to determine their relationship with production circumstances. Economic values were derived using a deterministic economic model based on profit equations with a fixed amount of broiler meat output of the production system. Nonintegrated and the integrated broiler production systems were studied. The difference between these originates from different definitions of cost components and scaling aspects. For each stage of an nonintegrated system, the model calculated the profit margin; for an integrated system, (total) cost prices per unit of product at each stage were calculated. The Dutch broiler performance data and prices were input into the model as the representative situation. For all traits, in the nonintegrated system, economic values were derived, expressed as Dutch guilders (Dfl) per unit of product, where the unit of product depends on the stage of the production system and equals an egg for the multiplier breeder, a day-old chick for the hatchery, and a marketable broiler for the commercial grower and processor. Resulting levels of economic values were illustrated by showing underlying cost or profit changes in the production system. For the integrated system, economic values were expressed as Dfl x marketable broiler(-1) x unit(-1). Economic values of traits in the integrated system were also derived for situations where technical parameters or prices of productive factors were changed (20% increase or decrease). A general conclusion from these sensitivity analyses is that the economic values are sensitive to production levels, product prices and feed prices; there are both linear and nonlinear relationships between economic values and production circumstances.  相似文献

A deterministic model for the economic evaluation of broiler production and the derivation of economic values in broiler breeding was developed and tested. The model distinguishes four production stages: multiplier breeder, hatchery, commercial grower, and processor. The processor is included to determine relationships for the price per kilogram of live weight and the quality of the carcass, either on a "whole sale" or "further processed" base. Quantity of product output for the system is fixed by a predetermined amount of kilogram carcass of final product broilers finished by the commercial grower. Profitability of production and cost prices per unit product for subsequent stages can be calculated. Exogenous parameters are easily changeable in order to calculate profitability and cost prices for different production levels or production circumstances. Economic values can be derived considering influences of changes in genetic merit for performance traits on profitability or cost price, for integrated and nonintegrated production systems. By changing exogenous parameters, the model can also be used to analyze profitability or derive economic values for other meat-type poultry, such as turkey.  相似文献

The prevalence of Campylobacter and Salmonella on retail poultry carcasses remains a significant public health concern. The stresses associated with transporting poultry prior to slaughter have been shown to increase pathogen populations both in the intestinal tract and on the carcass exterior. The yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, was evaluated for its ability to reduce populations of Salmonella and Campylobacter in broiler chickens subjected to transport stress. Chicks, inoculated with individual strains of Salmonella and Campylobacter were held for 6 wk and then divided into two groups with half of the chickens receiving 10% dried yeast in the feed for 60 h. The birds were then caged and transported to simulate commercial conditions. After euthanatizing the birds, the ceca were aseptically removed and analyzed for Salmonella and Campylobacter. With no yeast treatment, transport stress caused the Salmonella colonization frequency to increase more than fivefold, from 3.3 to 16.7%. Yeast treatment significantly reduced the frequency of Salmonella colonization to lower than prestress levels, as no Salmonella were recovered from the ceca of these birds (P < 0.05). Similar results were obtained from birds challenged with a mixture of Salmonella and Campylobacter strains. Before transport, 53.3% of these chickens were positive for Salmonella. Transport stress increased the colonization rate to 67.5% in control birds, whereas the colonization of yeast-treated chickens decreased to 40% (P < 0.05). Frequency of Campylobacter isolation from the ceca was not affected by treatment, but Campylobacter populations present in the ceca were significantly reduced in the mixed strain trial (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Energy is an important component of poultry feed and is derived principally from cereal grains. Unfortunately, all of the chemical energy is not available to the bird, and biological assays must be used to determine the digestible energy value of a cereal grain. The bioassay described uses four pens of six male broiler chicks, complete diets containing 80% of a test cereal grain (with or without an appropriate commercial enzyme), and ad libitum feed intake. Apparent metabolizable energy values (kilocalories per kilogram of cereal grain, DM basis) values are calculated from gross energy and acid insoluble ash measurements of diet and excreta collected for 24 h at 16 d of age. To monitor variation between broiler chick assays, due to bird, environment, etc., common control samples of Hard Red Spring (HRS) and Canadian Prairie Spring (CPS) wheat were tested in each of 15 separate assays over 2 yr. Similarly, for barley, control samples of hulled and hulless barley were repeatedly tested in five assays. Broiler performance in this study was lower than expected for commercial broilers, in part due to a high dietary cereal grain component and the fine mash texture. However, AME values as determined were comparable to those reported in the literature for wheat and barley. The CV for AME measured among pens, representing the intra-assay CV, was between 1.2 and 3.4% and was lower with enzyme supplementation. The interassay CV was only slightly higher than the intra-assay CV. This assay provides precise estimations of ME in cereal grains fed to young broilers that can be used for diet formulation or for verification of laboratory measures of feeding value of cereal grains.  相似文献

Two functional aspects of the avian immune system, the humoral and the cell-mediated arms, provide the basis for the preventive and protective response against disease-causing microorganisms. On the other hand, certain avian diseases may induce a transient or permanent immunosuppressive state in one or both of these arms, leading to increased disease susceptibility. In addition to the classical immune response, manifested as antibody production or effector cell activation several cytokines and metabolites are also produced. The consequence of cytokine- and metabolite-mediated microenvironments may be either beneficial or result in a noninfectious immunopathology. Nevertheless, the integrity of the immune system and its functional modulation by factors such as genetics, nutrition, and prophylactic approaches continue to be an important focus of attention in current poultry research and production efforts.  相似文献

Zoonoses are diseases, the infections of which can be transmitted between man and animals. Only a few are of importance with respect to poultry meat and meat from cattle, sheep, horses and goats. Advances in the control of diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis and trichinosis in animals have reduced the hazards posed to workers in the meat industry and to consumers of meat. However, inspection of animals ante- and post-mortem cannot detect all infectious agents present. This applies particularly to bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, verotoxigenic and other pathogenic Escherichia coli and Yersinia. Protection of meat workers from infection depends upon taking normal hygienic precautions, which also protect the meat from contamination from the workers. Consumers are exposed to a smaller range of zoonoses than meat workers because they encounter only meat that has passed inspection. In addition, heavily contaminated parts of the animal, such as the hide, feathers and viscera have been removed. Further advances in making meat safer are likely to result from the introduction of Integrated Quality Assurance systems. These involve identifying, monitoring and keeping records of the disease status and treatment of each animal (or poultry flock) so that its history is known when it reaches the abattoir. They should also include programmes aimed at minimising colonisation by zoonotic bacteria such as camplyobacters, salmonellas and verotoxigenic Escherichia coli.  相似文献
