The mechanical properties of epoxy systems filled with natural zeolite were studied. To study the effect of the filler content and particle size, natural zeolites of three different particle sizes were added to epoxy resin at various contents. The effect of strain rate on the tensile strength was also tested. With increasing zeolite content, Tg and Young's modulus increased; however, tensile strength and impact strength decreased. As the zeolite particle size decreased, all these properties increased, and tensile strength increased, with increasing strain rate. The fracture surface of the composite showed more complex morphology with increasing zeolite content.  相似文献

Natural rubber composites were prepared by the incorporation of palm ash at different loadings into a natural rubber matrix with a laboratory‐size two‐roll mill (160 × 320 mm2) maintained at 70 ± 5°C in accordance with the method described by ASTM D 3184–89. A coupling agent, maleated natural rubber (MANR), was used to improve the mechanical properties of the natural rubber composites. The results indicated that the scorch time and cure time decreased with increasing filler loading, whereas the maximum torque exhibited an increasing trend. Increasing the palm ash loading increased the tensile modulus, but the tensile strength, fatigue life, and elongation at break decreased. The rubber–filler interactions of the composites decreased with increasing filler loading. Scanning electron microscopy of the tensile fracture surfaces of the composites and rubber–filler interaction studies showed that the presence of MANR enhanced the interfacial interaction of the palm ash filler and natural rubber matrix. The presence of MANR also enhanced the tensile properties and fatigue life of palm‐ash‐filled natural rubber composites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

This article describes the properties of composites using unplasticized PVC matrix and wood flour (obtained by crushing the bark of Eugenia jambolana) as filler. Composites were prepared by mixing PVC with varying amounts of wood flour (ranging from 10–40 phr; having particle sizes of 100–150 μm and <50μm) using two‐roll mill followed by compression molding. The effect of wood flour content and its particle size on the properties, i.e., mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and thermal was evaluated. Tensile strength, impact strength, and % elongation at break decreased with increasing amounts of wood flour. Stiffness of the composites (as determined by storage modulus) increased with increasing amounts of the filler. Modulus increased significantly when wood flour having particle size <50 μm was used. Morphological characterization (SEM) showed a uniform distribution of wood flour in the composites. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2008  相似文献

Biomass carbon (BC) and soy protein (SP) were used to reinforce natural rubber (NR) biocomposites. The particle size of BC was reduced and characterized with elemental analysis, X‐ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and particle size analysis. The rubber composite reinforced with the BC/SP and the composite reinforced with the BC of higher carbon content show useful tensile properties at an optimum filler fraction. The model analysis of the stress–strain behaviors provides insight into filler network characteristics. For the highly filled composites, the BC have less constraint on the polymer chains as shown by the temperature and frequency dependent modulus as well as the model analysis of stress softening effect. The presence of NR protein improves the filler–polymer adhesion for the composites reinforced with BC/SP. POLYM. COMPOS., 2013. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the mechanical and physical properties of polypropylene (PP) filled by natural zeolite. For this purpose, a natural zeolite (at 1–6 wt% filler loadings) with two different particle sizes was used. Two different kinds of silane coupling agents (3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane, GAPTES and 3‐glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, GPTMS) at three different volume ratios were used to improve the zeolite compatibility with PP and to improve the mechanical properties of composites. Fillers and PP were compounded with a twin screw extruder, and the composites were moulded with injection moulding press. The samples were subjected to mechanical tests (i.e., impact and tensile tests) and physical tests (i.e., hardness, density, and melt flow index, MFI). The physical test results showed that the levels of hardness and density of both unmodified and modified zeolite‐filled PP composites were higher compared with neat PP. The MFI values of composites were decreased by increasing zeolite loading level. Composites including GAPTES modified zeolite showed improved yield strength, impact strength and stiffness compared with composites filled with unmodified zeolite particles. POLYM. This work focuses on the performance of Jatropha deoiled cake (JOC) as filler for medium‐density polyethylene. The biocomposites were prepared using a melt‐compounding technique. Maleated polyethylene (MPE) was used as a reactive additive to promote polymer/filler interfacial adhesion. The mechanical, thermodynamic mechanical and morphological properties of the resultant composites were investigated. The results show that the incorporation of JOC into the matrix reduced tensile, flexural, and impact strengths compared with the pure matrix. Moreover, tensile and flexural moduli were increased. The composites prepared with MPE had better mechanical properties and lower water uptake, indicating an enhancement in the interfacial interaction between JOC and polyethylene systems. The storage modulus was increased by the increase in filler loading and decreased when MPE was used. The composites loss modulus curves revealed two glass transitions indicating partial miscible blends. Scanning electron microscopy analysis for maleated composites showed a relatively homogeneous morphology with few left cavities, and the filler particle size is smaller compared to nontreated composites. The objectives of this research article is to evaluate the mechanical and tribological properties of glass‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (G–E) composites with and without graphite particulate filler. The laminates were fabricated by a dry hand layup technique. The mechanical properties, including tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and surface hardness, were investigated in accordance with ASTM standards. From the experimental investigation, we found that the tensile strength and dimensional stability of the G–E composite increased with increasing graphite content. The effect of filler content (0–7.5 wt %) and sliding distance on the friction and wear behavior of the graphite‐filled G–E composite systems were studied. Also, conventional weighing, determination of the coefficient of friction, and examination of the worn surface morphological features by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were done. A marginal increase in the coefficient of friction with sliding distance for the unfilled composites was noticed, but a slight reduction was noticed for the graphite‐filled composites. The 7.5% graphite‐filled G–E composite showed a lower friction coefficient for the sliding distances used. The wear loss of the composites decreased with increasing weight fraction of graphite filler and increased with increasing sliding distance. Failure mechanisms of the worn surfaces of the filled composites were established with SEM. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 2472–2480, 2007  相似文献

Tensile and impact properties of Neem bark flour (BF) containing high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites were studied at 0–0.26 volume fraction of filler. Tensile modulus and strength and breaking elongation decreased with increase in BF concentration. The decrease in tensile modulus and strength was attributed to the decrease in crystallinity of the polymer compared to the imposed mechanical restraint by the BF. Analysis of tensile strength data indicated formation of stress concentration in the interphase. Because of this stress concentration and the mechanical restraint, the elongation‐at‐break and Izod impact strength decreased. Use of a coupling agent, HDPE‐g‐MAH, brings about enhanced phase adhesion, increasing the tensile modulus and strength. Enhanced adhesion marginally lowers composite ductility at higher filler contents and aids stress transfer increasing the Izod impact strength inappreciably. Scanning electron microscopic studies indicated better dispersion of BF particles and enhanced interphase adhesion in presence of the coupling agent. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the mechanical and thermal properties of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) biocomposites reinforced with industrially available waste silk fibers, fabricated with varying fiber contents and lengths. The result indicates that use of waste silk fibers may be a potential as reinforcement for effectively improving the static and dynamic mechanical properties of a biodegradable polymer matrix resin, depending on the waste silk fiber content and length in the present biocomposite system. The “as‐separated” waste silk/PBS biocomposites showed the maximum tensile and flexural properties at a fiber loading of 40 wt %, and the “chopped” waste silk/PBS biocomposites showed the optimal strength and modulus with waste silk fibers of 12.7 mm length. The chopped waste silk fibers play a more contributing role in improving the mechanical properties of waste silk/PBS biocomposites than the as‐separated waste silk fibers at a fixed fiber loading. Above the glass transition temperature, the storage modulus of waste silk/PBS biocomposites was significantly greater than that of PBS resin, especially in the higher temperature region. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Residual lignocellulosic flour from spruce and ground olive stone was used as a natural filler in poly(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐valerate) (PHBV)‐based composites. The morphology and the thermal properties of these composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Lignocellulosic fillers acted as nucleating sites for the crystallization of PHBV and strongly enhanced its degree of crystallinity. Dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile properties of these materials were also studied. A significant reinforcing effect was displayed by dynamic mechanical analysis at temperatures higher than the glass–rubber transition of the matrix. In addition, for low‐particle‐size spruce, a stabilization of the modulus was observed up to 500 K. High‐strain tensile properties did not show any reinforcing effect. This apparent disagreement was explained by the poor adhesion between the hydrophilic lignocellulosic filler and the hydrophobic polymeric matrix. To validate this hypothesis, the experimental data were compared with predicted data involving the percolation concept. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 87: 1302–1315, 2003  相似文献

The effect of varied rubber tree seed shell flour (RSSF) filler loadings on processing torque, mechanical, thermal, water absorption, and morphological properties of polypropylene (PP) and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) composites has been studied. The addition of RSSF in the composites increased the stabilization torque in both PP‐ and HDPE‐based composites. Tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural strength, and impact strength show significant reduction when higher loading of RSSF was incorporated, while tensile modulus and flexural modulus were improved. The phenomenon was noted for both matrices, PP and HDPE, but HDPE‐based composites showed clear effects on the reduction of the mechanical properties compared with RSSF‐filled PP. Scanning electron microscopy of tensile fracture specimens revealed the degree of dispersion of RSSF filler in the matrices. At higher filler loadings, agglomerations and poor dispersion of RSSF particles were spotted, which induce the debonding mechanism of the system. Thermogravimetric analysis thermograms showed that both PP‐ and HDPE‐based composite systems with higher RSSF content have higher thermal stability, initial degradation temperature, degradation temperature, and total weight loss. Water absorption ability of the composites increases as the filler loading increases for both matrices. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 22:91–99, 2016. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

The present study was carried out to determine the filler characteristics and to investigate the effects of three types of mineral fillers (CaCO3, silica, and mica) and filler loadings (10–40 wt%) on the properties of polypropylene (PP) composites. The characteristics of the particulate fillers, such as mean particle size, particle size distribution, aspect ratio, shape, and degree of crystallinity were identified. In terms of mechanical properties, for all of the filled PP composites, Young's modulus increased, whereas tensile strength and strain at break decreased as the filler loading increased. However, 10 wt% of mica in a PP composite showed a tensile strength comparable with that of unfilled PP. Greater tensile strength of mica/PP composites compared to that of the other composites was observed because of lower percentages of voids and a higher aspect ratio of the filler. Mica/PP also exhibited a lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) compared to that of the other composites. This difference was due to a lower degree of crystallinity of the filler and the CTE value of the mica filler. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the structure of fracture surfaces, and there was a gradual change in tensile fracture behavior from ductile to brittle as the filler loading increased. The nucleating ability of the fillers was studied with differential scanning calorimetry, and a drop in crystallinity of the composites was observed with the addition of mineral filler. Studies on the hybridization effect of different (silica and mica) filler ratios on the properties of PP hybrid composites showed that the addition of mica to silica‐PP composites enhanced their tensile strength and modulus. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) was reinforced by cotton stalk bast fibers (CSBF), which had been pretreated by the continuous steam explosion method. The influence of water content in CSBF during the explosion and fiber content on the mechanical properties of CSBF/PBS biocomposites was investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of CSBF decreased the tensile and impact strength, while significantly enhanced the flexural strength, flexural modulus and tensile modulus. The mechanical properties of biocomposites reinforced by exploded fibers were much better than that of the biocomposites reinforced by non-exploded fibers. Biocomposites reinforced by fibers with 40 and 50 wt% water contents during the explosion had the best mechanical properties. The morphology of CSBF and biocomposites was evaluated by SEM, which demonstrated that fibers with 40 and 50 wt% water contents had better separation and rougher microsurfaces, indicating a better adhesion between PBS matrix and fibers.  相似文献

Fillers are essential component of printing papers to increase the opacity, brightness, and to improve formation and printing properties. As a very little work has been reported so far on magnesium silicate (talc), the study was conducted with the filler of different particle size for papermaking. The sheets were made in the laboratory with refined mixed hardwood chemical pulp with five grades of talc, ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) fillers with 15–24% ash level. Apparent density along with tensile, burst, tear index, Z‐direction tensile strength (ZDTS) and bending stiffness index were evaluated for talc filled sheets, and compared with GCC and PCC. Physical strength properties of talc filled sheets were decreased at a faster rate on increasing filler loading in paper and decreasing the particle size of the filler. With same type of filler its particle size determines the physical properties of paper. The postulate was not found to be valid for all the three varieties of fillers viz., talc, PCC and GCC. Shape and geometry of the PCC and GCC fillers determine the individual property. © 2012 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献

The mechanical properties of mesoporous silica (MCM‐41) filled poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLA4032D) composites and PLA4032D/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) composites were investigated. It was found that the Young's modulus increased while tensile strength decreased with increasing the filler content; the V‐notched impact fracture strengths of both Izod and Charpy for the PLA4032D/PEG/MCM‐41 composites increased while they decreased slightly for the PLA4032D/MCM‐41 composites, the unnotched Charpy impact strength of both the two composites decreased with increasing the filler loading; the flexural modulus increased slightly while the flexural strength decreased slightly with increasing the filler content. The toughening mechanisms of the composites were discussed by means of observing the impact fracture surface with a scanning electronic microscope, and the synergistic effect between the PEG and MCM‐41 should be one of the major toughening mechanisms. Potato peel powder (POPL), which is biodegradable, has been used as filler material in polypropylene (PP) matrix in varying concentration from 10 to 40% by weight to prepare biocomposites and investigated water absorption, physicomechanical and thermal properties. Scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction has been used for morphological characterization and crystallization studies. Flexural modulus of biocomposites increased by 40% compared with neat PP at 30% loading of POPL. Flexural strength also increased with increasing filler loading. Tensile strength of biocomposites has been observed to be comparable with neat PP up to 20% filler loading and increase in tensile modulus up to 40% was seen in biocomposites with 20% filler loading. Impact strength of biocomposites up to 20% filler loading was found to be at par with neat PP. Use of MA‐g‐PP compatibilizer in the biocomposites yielded better physico‐mechanical and thermal properties than biocomposites without compatibilizer. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. High‐density polyethylene (HDPE)–wood composite samples were prepared using a twin‐screw extruder. Improved filler–filler interaction was achieved by increasing the wood content, whereas improved polymer–filler interaction was obtained by adding the compatibilizer and increasing the melt index of HDPE, respectively. Then, effects of filler–filler and polymer–filler interactions on dynamic rheological and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results demonstrated that enhanced filler–filler interaction induced the agglomeration of wood particles, which increased the storage modulus and complex viscosity of composites and decreased their tensile strength, elongation at break, and notched impact strength because of the stress concentration. Stronger polymer–filler interaction resulted in higher storage modulus and complex viscosity and increased the tensile and impact strengths due to good stress transfer. The main reasons for the results were analyzed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Mechanical properties of polypropylene-talc composites are measured as a function of talc concentration up to 40 wt.-%, Young's modulus of filled polypropylene shows linear increase with talc concentration up to double the value of unfilled polymer. Yield stress and Charpy notch toughness decrease with increasing talc content below matrix level at the highest filler content. Composite ultimate tensile elongation and tensile impact strength decrease sharply beginning at the lowest filler concentration. The influence of the talc particle size on the mechanical properties, especially composite toughness, mentioned above, is investigated. Four type of talc were used. Notch toughness decreases according to a linear dependence with mean size of talc particles. Evaluating impact strength possible content of agglomerates of filler and other additions is necessary to be included: tensile impact strength gives slow linear dependence with increasing content of filler particles and/or agglomerates above about 10 μm. The influence of talc particle size on the toughness of filled polypropylene becomes strong if the rubber particles are present.  相似文献

Biocomposites were made with nonwoven hemp mats and unsaturated polyester resin (UPE). The hemp fiber volume fraction was optimized by mechanical testing. The effect of four surface treatments of industrial hemp fibers on mechanical and thermal properties of biocomposites was studied. The treatments done were alkali treatment, silane treatment, UPE (matrix) treatment, and acrylonitrile treatment. Bending strength, modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength, storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan δ were evaluated and compared for all composites. The mechanical as well as thermal properties of the biocomposites improved after surface treatments. The properties of the above biocomposites were also compared with E‐glass–mat composite. To achieve balance in properties, a hybrid composite of industrial hemp and glass fibers was made. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 99: 1055–1068, 2006  相似文献
