A new polymerizable monomer, [4‐(9‐ethyl)carbazolyl]methyl methacrylate ( 2 ), was synthesized by reacting of methacrylic acid and 4‐hydroxymethyl‐9‐ethyl carbazole ( 1 ) by esterification procedure in the presence of N,N′‐dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. The resulting monomer was then polymerized free‐radically to form the poly(methyl methacrylate) containing 4‐(9‐ethyl)carbazolyl pend ent groups. Also, copolymerization of monomer 2 with various acrylic monomers such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and n‐butyl acrylate by azobisisobutyronitrile as a free radical polymerization initiator gave the related copolymers in high yields. The structure of all the resulted compounds was characterized and confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques. The average molecular weight of the obtained polymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography using tetrahydrofurane as the solvent. The thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimeter instruments were used for studying of thermal properties of polymers. It was found that, with the incorporation of bulky 4‐(9‐ethyl)carbazolyl substitutes in side chains of methyl methacrylate polymers, thermal stability and glass transition temperature of polymers are increased. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐Chloromethyl styrene was copolymerized with various molar ratio of methyl methacrylate or ethyl methacrylate by solution free radical polymerization method, at 70 ± 1°C using α,α′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiator. Then, very highly sterically hindered tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl substituent was covalently linked to the obtained copolymers with liberation of chlorine atoms. The structure of all polymers was characterized and confirmed by FT‐IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy techniques. The average molecular weight and glass transition temperature of polymers were determined using gel permeation chromatograph and differential scanning calorimeter instruments, respectively. Study of differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that chemical modification of 4‐chloromethyl styrene copolymers with tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl substituents leads to an increase in the rigidity and glass transition temperature of polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐poly(L ‐lactic acid)‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymer was prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and properties of the copolymer were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR), thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic plot for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate using poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) as the initiator shows that the reaction time increases linearly with ln[M]0/[M]. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve grafted chains with well‐defined molecular weights, and block copolymers with narrowed molecular weight distributions. The thermal stability of PLLA is improved by copolymerization. A new wash‐extraction method for removing copper from the ATRP has also exhibits satisfactory results. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Amphiphilic block and graft copolymers constitute a very interesting class of polymers with potential for biomedical applications, due to their special characteristics, which derive from the combination of properties of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties. In this work, the synthesis and biodegradation of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(L ‐lactide) are studied. RESULTS: The graft copolymers were synthesized using the macromonomer technique. In a first step, methacryloyl‐terminated poly(L ‐lactide) macromonomers were synthesized in a wide molecular weight range using different catalysts. Subsequently, these macromonomers were copolymerized with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate in order to obtain a graft copolymer. These new materials resemble hydrogel scaffolds with a biodegradable component. The biodegradation was studied in hydrolytic and enzymatic environments. The influence of different parameters (molecular weight, crystallinity, ratio between hydrophilic and hydrophobic components) on the degradation rate was investigated. CONCLUSION: Based on this study it will be possible to tailor the release properties of biodegradable materials. In addition, the materials will show good biocompatibility due to the hydrophilic poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogel scaffold. This kind of material has potential for many applications, like controlled drug‐delivery systems or biodegradable implants. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

This study investigated the chemical behavior of polymers bearing cycloaliphatic bornyl units along with the steric difference of the chiral (+)‐bornyl methacrylate [(+)‐BMA] and racemic (±)‐BMA, expressed in the physical properties of the copolymers and the resist characteristics. To do this, a series of copolymers containing (+)‐bornyl methacrylate [(+)‐BMA] and (±)‐BMA] units was synthesized. Comonomers of tert‐butyl methacrylate (TBMA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and maleic anhydride (MA) were used. The thermogravimetric curves, glass‐transition temperature (Tg), and molecular weight (MW) of the copolymers were evaluated. Exposure characteristics of chemical‐amplified positive photoresists comprising various copolymers were investigated. It was found that copolymers bearing (±)‐BMA have higher Tg and better thermostability than those of copolymers containing (+)‐BMA units. The copolymers with (±)‐BMA units, however, revealed an inert photochemical behavior on the positive‐tone photoresist. The patterning properties of the positive photoresist, composed of copolymers bearing (+)‐BMA and (±)‐BMA, and the photoacid generator (PAG) were also investigated. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 1‐(butoxy)ethyl methacrylate (BEMA) was carried out using CuBr/2,2′‐bipyridyl complex as catalyst and 2‐bromo‐2‐methyl‐propionic acid ester as initiator. The number average molecular weight of the obtained polymers increased with monomer conversion, and molecular weight distributions were unimodal throughout the reaction and shifted toward higher molecular weights. Using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a bromine atom at the chain end, which was prepared by ATRP, as the macro‐initiator, a diblock copolymer PMMA‐block‐poly [1‐(butoxy)ethyl methacrylate] (PMMA‐b‐PBEMA) has been synthesized by means of ATRP of BEMA. The amphiphilic diblock copolymer PMMA‐block‐poly(methacrylic acid) can be further obtained very easily by hydrolysis of PMMA‐b‐PBEMA under mild acidic conditions. The molecular weight and the structure of the above‐mentioned polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. Polycarbonates (PCs) having poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMAs) as graft chains were prepared by the polycondensation of PC oligomers bearing chloroformate groups as the end groups with dicarboxyl‐terminated PMMA macromonomers, which were prepared by the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of thiomalic acid as a chain transfer. The resulting PC‐PMMA graft copolymers were transparent in comparison with PC/PMMA blend polymers, and had higher Vickers hardness than blend polymers when both of them had the same PMMA content. According to the results of multiple regression analysis, the improvement of Vickers hardness was conducive to length (46%) and number (37%) of PMMA branches. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel diastereomeric acrylic ketal monomers derived from (+)‐camphor and (±)‐camphor were synthesized. To investigate the applications of the camphor derivatives on positive‐tone photoresists, the acrylic ketal monomers were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate, methacrylic acid, and n‐butyl methacrylate. The optical activities of the chiral monomers and polymers were all evaluated. After UV irradiation and postexposure baking, the optical activity of the polymers decreased because of the decomposition of the acid‐labile pendant chiral groups. The existence of alicyclic camphyl groups increased the etching resistance of the photoresists. The thermogravimetric properties of the copolymers, the exposure curves, the lithographic evaluation of the positive‐tone photoresists, and the effects of alicyclic groups on the plasma etching resistance of the copolymers were all investigated. A resolution of a line‐and‐space pattern of 0.3 μm was achieved. Acid‐catalyzed dehydration crosslinking was also found in this system. Sufficient UV irradiation and heat treatment could cause the acid‐catalyzed dehydration crosslinking of pendant carboxyl groups and thereby increase the efficiency of the thermal resistance of the polymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amorphous blends of isotactic and syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) were found to be compatible. To evaluate the interaction between these tactic polymers, random copolymers of isotactic poly(methyl/ethyl methacrylate) were blended with syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate). Only the copolymers with an ethyl methacrylate content below 45% were compatible with syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate). Using a Flory-Huggins type treatment of copolymer mixtures, the segmental interaction parameters for poly(methyl methacrylate) with poly(ethyl methacrylate) and for isotactic with syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) were calculated. The interaction parameter for the tactic poly(methyl methacrylate) pair was found to be small and negative.  相似文献

Free‐radical polymerization of p‐cumyl phenyl methacrylate (CPMA) was performed in benzene using bezoyl peroxide as an initiator at 80°C. The effect of time on the molecular weight was studied. Functional copolymers of CPMA and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with different feed ratios were synthesized by free‐radical polymerization in methyl ethyl ketone at 70°C, and they were characterized by FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights and polydispersity indexes of the polymers and copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The copolymer composition was determined by 1H‐NMR. The glass‐transition temperature of the polymer and the copolymers was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The reactivity ratios of the monomers were determined by the Fineman–Ross and Kelen–Tudos methods. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 97: 336–347, 2005  相似文献

ABA‐type block copolymers composed of 2,5‐diphenyl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole (DPTD) oligoester and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) segments (Mn = 16 200 and 23 000) were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization and their liquid‐crystalline (LC) and photoluminescence (PL) properties were examined. The structures of block copolymers were identified by Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopies. Differential scanning calorimetry measurement, polarizing microscopy observation and wide‐angle X‐ray analysis revealed that the block copolymers form thermotropic LC phase (smectic C) independent of molecular weights of PMMA segments, but a model polymer (PMMA segments having the DPTD unit in the central part) has no LC melt. Solution and solid‐state PL spectra indicated that all the block copolymers display blue emission arising from the DPTD unit. Their quantum yields are 17–21%, which increase with the PMMA chain lengths. The block copolymers have good aligned structures in the LC states, but their order parameter (S) values in sheared LC states were lower than those in the sheared LC compounds. The PL properties in the LC states were independent of the LC aligned structures. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed that these block copolymers have deep HOMO levels compared with polymers composed of oxadiazole rings. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A new iodine‐containing methacrylate monomer, 3,4,5‐triiodobenzoyloxyethyl methacrylate (TIBEM), was synthesized by coupling 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with 3,4,5‐triiodobenzoic acid. The monomer was characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared (IR), and ultraviolet spectra. Homopolymerization and copolymerization of the monomer with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were carried out using 2,2′‐azobis isobutyronitrile as the initiator. A terpolymer of TIBEM, MMA, and HEMA was also synthesized. The copolymers were characterized by IR, gel permeation chromatography, differential thermal analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). High molecular weight polymers were produced with MMA at different feed compositions of TIBEM. The polymers were found to be freely soluble in common solvents for acrylic polymers. TGA showed little decomposition of the copolymer below 280°C. Copolymers showed good radiopacity at 25 wt % of TIBEM in the feed. These copolymers could find applications in medical and dental areas where radiopacity is a desirable feature of the implants. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐(trimethylsiloxy)ethyl methacrylate (Pro‐HEMA) copolymers were prepared by atom‐transfer radical polymerization(ATRP), using CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as catalytic system and p‐toluenesulfonyl chloride as initiator. ATRP process of MMA and Pro‐HEMA was monitored by 1H NMR, and the kinetic curves of the MMA/Pro‐HEMA copolymerization were plotted in terms of the 1H NMR data. At low content of Pro‐HEMA in the feed composition, the copolymerization can be well controlled with the molecular weight, polydispersity and the monomer distribution in the copolymer chain. With the increase of Pro‐HEMA content in the feed mixture, the composition of the final copolymer deviates from the composition of the feed mixture gradually, and gradient copolymers of MMA/Pro‐HEMA can be obtained. Through the hydrolysis process, well‐defined copolymers of MMA/HEMA were obtained from poly(MMA/Pro‐HEMA). Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Narrow‐distribution, well‐defined comb‐like amphiphilic copolymers are reported in this work. The copolymers are composed of poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐HEMA)) as the backbones and poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) as the grafted chains, with the copolymer backbones being synthesized via atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and the grafted chains by oxyanionic polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The aggregation behavior in aqueous solutions of the comb‐like amphiphilic copolymers was also investigated. 1H NMR spectroscopic and surface tension measurements all indicated that the copolymers could form micelles in aqueous solutions and they possessed high surface activity. The results of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations showed that the hydrodynamic diameters of the comb‐like amphiphilic copolymer aggregates increased with dilution. Because of the protonizable properties of the graft chains, the surface activity properties and micellar state can be easily modulated by variations in pH. This study investigated the relationship between particle size, particle distribution, thermal, and optical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) microbeads using dispersion polymerization under various methanol/water (MeOH/H2O) dispersion medium ratios and methyl methacrylate acid concentrations. The particle size of the poly(methyl methacrylate) microbeads increased when the medium solubility and monomer concentration increased simultaneously. In addition, the molecular weight and polydispersity of the poly(methyl methacrylate) microbeads were increased as the methanol ratio increased. The refractive index increased as the content of the poly(methyl methacrylate) microbeads increased with wavelengths of 546 and 589 nm.  相似文献

Novel amphiphilic ABA‐type poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate)‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate) (PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA) tri‐block copolymers were successfully synthesized via the combination of the step‐growth and copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Dihydroxy polyurethane (HO‐PU‐OH) was synthesized by the step‐growth polymerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate with poly(tetramethylene glycol). PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA block copolymers were synthesized via copper‐catalyzed ATRP of GAMA in N, N‐dimethyl formamide at 20°C in the presence of 2, 2′‐bipyridyl using Br‐PU‐Br as macroinitiator and characterized by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC. The resulting block copolymer forms spherical micelles in water as observed in TEM study, and also supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy and light scattering. Miceller size increases with increase in hydrophilic PGAMA chain length as revealed by DLS study. The critical micellar concentration values of the resulting block copolymers increased with the increase of the chain length of the PGAMA block. Thermal properties of these block copolymers were studied by thermo‐gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetric study. Spherical Ag‐nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using these block copolymers as stabilizer. The dimension of Ag nanoparticle was tailored by altering the chain length of the hydrophilic block of the copolymer. A mechanism has been proposed for the formation of stable and regulated Ag nanoparticle using various chain length of hydrophilic PGAMA block of the tri‐block copolymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four‐arm star‐shaped polymers and copolymers were obtained by transition metal‐catalyzed atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The polymers were characterized by FTIR and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. Gel permeation chromatography results indicated the formation of polystyrene and polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMMA) arms with controlled molecular weights. In dilute solution, the linear polymers had higher inherent viscosities than star‐shaped ones. Thermogravimetric analysis showed a similar degradation mechanism for linear and star‐shaped polymers. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated the successful formation of diblock star‐shaped copolymers. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

This work describes three different methods for detecting acidic groups copolymerized in poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(ethyl methacrylate), and poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) chains using molecular spectroscopy. The first was based on the shift of the tautomeric equilibrium of 4‐dimethylaminoazobenzene by acidic groups that modify the absorption band in the UV/vis spectra. We also show that the acidic groups present in the polymer influenced the anti‐syn photoisomerization reaction of this dye. Further, a mercury–dithizonate complex was completely bleached when sorbed in poly(n‐alkyl methacrylate) matrices containing acidic groups. Finally, Nile Blue A was used as a spectrophotometric probe to quantify the amount of acidic groups in these polymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 830–838, 2004  相似文献

The copolymerization of styrene or methyl methacrylate with 1,8‐naphthalimide dyes to yield fluorescent side‐group copolymers was investigated. During copolymerization, no changes occurred in the chromophoric systems of the dyes. Colorimetrically, it was found that more that 0.90% of the dyes were chemically bonded to the polymer chain. The effect of polymer coloration was proven by appropriate coloristic characterization. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 2463–2470, 2001  相似文献
