Police departments across the nation are requesting the consultation of psychologists during hostage incidents. There is a growing body of literature on the psychological aspects of hostage situations and negotiation. I review the existing body of literature with respect to who takes hostages and why, selection of negotiators, the role of the clinical psychologist as a consultant, victims' responses to being held hostage and theoretical explanations for the Stockholm Syndrome, and psychological sequelae and treatment suggestions after release. Discusses the special knowledge, training, and roles required in the emerging subspecialty of pediatric psychology. Because psychologists in the pediatric setting will be working with a clientele consisting of nonpsychiatric referrals and colleagues not primarily interested in behavioral problems, they will need training in both normal child development and personality in clinical areas. Another area of concern is childrearing and the optimal climate for cognitive, affective, and interpersonal growth. In addition, requests for cognitive and/or developmental appraisals will be high, and there will be a need for more emphasis on applied vs basic research. Advocacy is a service independent of generic treatment services provided to the mentally handicapped. It is emerging because of the need for changes in mental health. There is both a compelling need and opportunity for psychologists to become advocates for the mentally handicapped. It is commented that it is a role, however, too seldom played by psychologists and that this underrepresentation is a disservice to both psychologists and their clients. The rationale for casting psychologists as advocates is examined, and an example of interdisciplinary advocacy is presented. Environmental assessment (mapping) impact data were reported during each of 8 mo by 72 student paraprofessionals in a university counseling center. Ss were trained to assess the impact on student life of 34 environmental conditions distributed among 4 categories: academic climate, academic format, social climate, and physical climate. Quantitative data corresponding to the academic format category are presented to illustrate 5 role components of the professional psychologist in environmental change: assessor, linker, consultant, change facilitator, and change advocate. Reports that the results of child development research are beginning to make substantial contributions to child and adolescent health and health care. Health promotion is discussed in the context of mental health promotion. Research in developmental psychopathology suggests that particular skills, feelings, and attitudes characterize mentally healthy children. Social competence, cognitive problem-solving skills, coping with emotional stress, and perceiving oneself to have good social support from others appear to be important correlates of positive adjustment in childhood and adolescence. It is suggested that these characteristics deserve consideration in the development of children's mental health promotion initiatives. Presents recent lists of both authors and specific articles and books that (a) have stood the test of time and are still influencing the field (classics) and (b) are frequently cited in the recent counseling research (possible emerging classics). Frequency analyses of approximately 14,000 references cited in 3 major counseling psychology journals for 1979 and 1980 yielded lists of (a) the classic articles and books (published in 1957 or before), (b) early major contributors, (c) emerging classic articles and books, and (d) major contributors of more recent research. The mission of the Department of Energy National Laboratories should be expanded to include as an item of high priority collaborative research in support of high technology industry, including the materials industry. There are numerous reasons for doing this. The original missions of the laboratories, other than those of the weapons laboratories, have been deemphasized or disappeared. The laboratories have superior facilities, often unique, and high quality staffs experienced in the interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. In this position he has responsibility for liaison to the three Department of Energy Laboratories managed by the University: the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He assumed this position in February, 1985. Dr. Kane received the B.S. degree in 1950 from Montana State University and the Ph.D. degree in 1955 from the University of California in Berkeley. Both degrees were in chemistry. He was at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1955 to 1974; at the time he left the Laboratory he was the Head of the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science. Evaluated K. Kitchener and J. Hurst's (See PA, Vol 52:Issue 4) education through student interaction discussion program from 110 students' evaluations and performance on classroom tests in an undergraduate psychology class. 10 discussion groups were formed with 5 experimental conditions: (a) student facilitator, with the education through student interaction training workshop; (b) student facilitator without the education through student interaction training workshop; (c) without the student facilitator, with the education through student interaction training workshop; (d) without the student facilitator without the education through student interaction training workshop, with the education through student interaction manual; (e) without the student facilitator, without the training workshop, and without the education through student interaction manual. Results support the use of the program with a student facilitator and/or a training workshop and indicate that having students discuss course content without structure, student facilitator, or training was inadequate. A faculty outreach program created by a university counseling center had the goals of strengthening the working relationship between staff of the center and academic faculty, informing faculty of the center's services and their relationship to the academic mission, providing coordination of academic departments' requests for outreach and consultation services, and increasing center staff involvement in outreach services to faculty. In its first year this program reached 53 departments and programs and 370 faculty and staff. The program design, results, and future directions are discussed. This article comments on the importance of competent organizational executive leadership and the practice of executive coaching in professional consultation. As it is currently practiced, executive coaching appears to be an eclectic mix of concepts and methods that are being applied by a variety of consultants who have accepted assignments to work with individual executives. The author concludes by introducing the issue of the Consulting Psychology Journal on executive coaching which reviews literature in the field, identifies current approaches and methods, and provides an opportunity for leading practitioners to describe what they are doing and help define the core concepts and definitions of this emerging competency. The verbal responses of school counselors conducting initial counseling and consultation sessions were compared in this study. Information-providing, paraphrase, closed question, and open question were the most common responses in both counseling and consultation. There were some differences in the frequency of responses used in counseling and consultation. School counselors provided less information and asked more closed and open questions in counseling than in the consultation sessions. The training implications of these findings are discussed. Despite the increasing attention being given to clergy–psychologist collaboration, many psychologists may wonder what clergy–psychologist collaboration looks like in actual practice. The authors describe an example of clergy–psychologist collaboration involving a careful needs-assessment phase followed by the development of a wide spectrum of preventive, consultative, and direct services. Current challenges include funding, establishment of trust, and the integration of psychology and spirituality. Implications for professional psychologists are discussed.
