The toxicity and bioavailability of molinate to Vibrio fischeri (Microtox((R))) were determined in both laboratory and river water in the absence and presence of sediment after 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96-h exposure. The bioavailability of molinate, expressed as 5min EC50s (bioluminescence) and their fiducial limits calculated using initial measured concentrations, to V. fischeri in laboratory water in the absence and presence of sediment ranged from 1.8 (1.7-2.1) to 3.6 (3.5-3.7) mgL(-1) and 1.3 (1.2-1.4) to 4.2 (3.5-4.5) mgL(-1), respectively. The corresponding values in river water and river water plus sediment were 1.7 (1.6-1.8) to 3.8 (3.6-4.1) and 1.3 (1.3-1.4) to 4.6 (4.2-4.9) mgL(-1), respectively. River water did not significantly (P>0.05) reduce the bioavailability of molinate to V. fischeri compared to that of laboratory water. However, the presence of sediment significantly (P<0.05) reduced the bioavailability of molinate to V. fischeri in both waters. The exposure time also significantly (P<0.05) reduced the bioavailability of molinate to V. fischeri in both waters in the presence and absence of sediment. The type of water did not significantly (P>0.05) affect the loss of molinate during the 96-h exposure period. However, the presence of sediment significantly (P<0.01) increased the loss of molinate from the test solutions, probably by binding to the sediment particles. Exposure period and concentration levels significantly (P<0.05) affected the loss of the herbicides over the 96h.  相似文献

Copper, zinc, cadmium and selenium were measured in the gastropod mollusc Bembicium nanum at two uncontaminated locations, Jervis Bay and Rosedale, NSW, to determine natural variability of metals associated with gender, mass, shore position and temporal variability. Trace metals were also measured in B. nanum at three industrialised locations to determine the accumulation of trace metals in contaminated environments.Copper, zinc, cadmium and selenium concentrations were not significantly different between male and female B. nanum. No significant relationships were found between zinc, cadmium and selenium concentrations and mass. There was a significant relationship between copper concentration and mass but only 19% of the variation was explained by mass. Generally inherent variability within samples had a greater influence than gender or variations in mass on trace metal concentrations. No trend was found in cadmium and selenium concentrations with variation in shoreline position. Copper and zinc concentrations increased further away from the low tide mark, with a decrease in metal concentrations at the furthest site from the water. Variability in metal concentrations is attributable to variations in food source, food availability and different immersion times.Copper, zinc, cadmium and selenium concentrations varied over a 12-month period. Copper, cadmium and selenium were taken up and lost over time, as metal body burden followed the same trend as metal concentrations. Zinc concentrations were influenced by mass. Copper and cadmium concentrations fluctuated throughout the 12-month period but with no clear seasonal trends. Selenium concentrations peaked in spring (October), with concentrations remaining uniform over the other months. These differences in mean concentrations between months were most likely due to inherent trace metal variability associated with differences in food availability and changes in metabolic rates associated with changes in temperature during the study period.Measurement of trace metals in B. nanum at contaminated sites showed that B. nanum accumulates metals in response to contamination.B. nanum meets most of the requirements to be a biomonitor of trace metal contamination as they are abundant, sedentary, easy to identify, provide sufficient tissue for analysis, tolerate high concentrations of pollutants and they accumulate trace metals in response to contamination. However, as trace metal concentration can vary with mass, shoreline position and temporally, care must be taken to collect individual organisms with similar mass from similar shoreline positions and times.  相似文献

Controlled flooding of lowlands is considered as a potential water management strategy to minimize the risk of flooding of inhabited areas during high water periods. However, due to industrial activities, river water, sediments and soils are often contaminated with metals which may have adverse effects on the ecosystem's structure and functioning. Additionally, salinity may greatly affect the bioavailability and toxicity of metals present or imported into these systems. The effect of contaminated soils under different flooding and salinity exposure scenarios on the growth, reproduction and metal accumulation in the oligochaete Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774) were examined. In these bioassays metal contaminated soils were flooded with water of different salinities (0 and 3 psu), and tested after 0, 6 and 12 months of permanent inundation. We indeed found that inundation time had significant decreasing effects on Cu and Zn accumulation; although initial accumulation of Cu and Zn was higher in the previously unflooded soil at the start of the flooding treatment, these differences seem to disappear after 6 months of permanent inundation. Moreover, the complex interaction between substrate type and salinity suggests that redox potential is probably of major importance.  相似文献

Reed (Phragmites australis), a commonly used macrophyte in the wetlands constructed for water purification, was investigated as a new biosorbent for the removal of Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+) and Zn(2+) from aqueous solution. The metal adsorption capacity of reed biomass was improved significantly by water-wash, base- and acid-treatment. The maximum sorption of NaOH-pretreated reed biomass was observed near neutral pH for Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Ni(2+) and Zn(2+), while that for Pb(2+) was from an acidic range of pH 4.0 or higher. The maximum metal adsorption capacity on a molar basis assumed by Langmuir model was in the order of Cu(2+)>Ni(2+)>Cd(2+)>Zn(2+)>Pb(2+). Reed biosorbent showed a very high adsorption affinity value, which helps predict its high ability to adsorb heavy metals at low concentration. Desorption of heavy metals and regeneration of the biosorbent was attained simultaneously by acid elution. Even after three cycles of adsorption-elution, the adsorption capacity was regained completely and the desorption efficiency of metal was maintained at around 90%.  相似文献

The Microtox Acute Toxicity Test has been successfully used to measure the toxicity of metals and other pollutants at high concentrations (ppm) in selected environmental samples. However, metals and other toxicants are often found in much lower concentrations (ppb) in many municipal wastewaters and receiving waters. In order to assess the toxicity of these pollutants in these samples, a more sensitive toxicity assay is needed. The Microtox chronic toxicity test has been developed to measure the sublethal effect of toxicants over multiple generations of the test species, Vibrio fisheri. In this study, the toxicity of the 13 priority pollutant metals [i.e. As, Se, Cd, Cr (III and VI), Cu, Pb, Sb, Ag, Tl, Zn, Be, Hg and Ni] to V. fisheri was evaluated using the Microtox chronic toxicity test. In this test, the inhibitory concentration (IC), lowest observable effect concentration (LOEC), and no observable effect concentration (NOEC) were obtained after 22-h of incubation at 27+/-1 degrees C, by comparing the light output of the control to that of the test sample. Among the 13 priority pollutant metals, beryllium (Be) was found to be the most toxic in the test (LOEC=0.742-1.49 microg/l) while thallium (Tl) was the least toxic (LOEC=3840-15300 microg/l). The LOECs for copper (as Cu) and lead (Pb) in reagent (ASTM Type I) water were 6.78-13.6 microg/l and 626-1251 microg/l, respectively. The toxicity of copper sulfate (as Cu) in reagent water was shown and significantly reduced with the addition of natural organic matter (fulvic acid) or EDTA to the sample. The LOEC values for the 13 priority pollutant metals in this test were comparable to or lower than those reported for commonly used aquatic toxicity tests, such as the Ceriodaphnia dubia assay.  相似文献

This study focused on the metal bioaccumulation of two aquatic insects (Ephoron virgo and Hydropsyche spp.) in order to evaluate the spatial distribution of metals, the interspecific differences between both filter-feeders and the bioaccumulation dynamics during E. virgo development stages. Hg, Cd, Ni, Cr, As, Pb, Cu, Ti, Zn and Mn were quantified in insects and in suspended particulate matter (SPM) sampled downstream and upstream of a chemical plant, where more than 300,000 t of polluted sediments are deposited. Hg concentrations were one order of magnitude higher downstream of the sediment dump, which showed that the Hg pollution originated in the chemical plant. Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb, Ti, Zn and Mn in invertebrates revealed that metal pollution was present upstream in other parts of the river. Interspecific differences were observed for all metals but Mn; significantly higher concentrations were observed in E. virgo over Hydropsyche exocellata, except for Cd, which showed 10-fold higher values. Hg and Cd increased until E. virgo nymphs reached 11 mm and decreased afterwards in late instars when nymphs were about to emerge. Cr, Pb, Ti and Mn decreased along early instars followed by a steady state in late instars. Similar values were obtained for Cu, As and Zn along all instars. Sexual differences between males and females of E. virgo were observed for Cd, Cu and Mn. Hg and Cd persistence was strong across developmental stages since high concentrations were found in eggs and emerging adults. Because the behavior of different metals varied for the two species and during the developmental stages of E. virgo, care should be taken in the interpretation of insect metal concentrations when analyzing the food chain transfer of metals in river ecosystems.  相似文献

In this study, the microbial toxicities of metal oxide nanoparticles were evaluated for Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Streptococcus aureus in laboratory experiments. The nanoparticles tested were CuO, NiO, ZnO, and Sb2O3. The metal oxide nanoparticles were dispersed thoroughly in a culture medium, and the microorganisms were cultivated on Luria-Bertani agar plates containing different concentrations of metal oxide nanoparticles. The bacteria were counted in terms of colony forming units (CFU). The CFU was reduced in a culture medium containing metal oxide NP, and the dose-response relationship was characterized. CuO nanoparticles were found to be the most toxic among the tested nanoparticles, followed by ZnO (except S. aureus), NiO, and Sb2O3 nanoparticles. We determined that the intrinsic toxic properties of heavy metals are also associated with the toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles. Ion toxicity was also evaluated to determine the effects of metal ions dissolved from metal oxide NPs, and the toxicity induced from the dissolved ions was determined to be negligible herein. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of the toxicity of NiO and Sb2O3 NPs on microorganisms. We also discuss the implications of our findings regarding the effects of the intrinsic toxic properties of heavy metals, and concluded that the apparent toxicities of metal oxide NPs can largely be understood as a matter of particle toxicity.  相似文献

The impact of CO2 leakage on solubility and distribution of trace metals in seawater and sediment has been studied in lab scale chambers. Seven metals (Al, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn) were investigated in membrane-filtered seawater samples, and DGT samplers were deployed in water and sediment during the experiment. During the first phase (16 days), “dissolved” (< 0.2 µm) concentrations of all elements increased substantially in the water. The increase in dissolved fractions of Al, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in the CO2 seepage chamber was respectively 5.1, 3.8, 4.5, 3.2, 1.4, 2.3 and 1.3 times higher than the dissolved concentrations of these metals in the control. During the second phase of the experiment (10 days) with the same sediment but replenished seawater, the dissolved fractions of Al, Cr, Cd, and Zn were partly removed from the water column in the CO2 chamber. DNi and DCu still increased but at reduced rates, while DPb increased faster than that was observed during the first phase. DGT-labile fractions (MeDGT) of all metals increased substantially during the first phase of CO2 seepage. DGT-labile fractions of Al, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were respectively 7.9, 2.0, 3.6, 1.7, 2.1, 1.9 and 2.3 times higher in the CO2 chamber than that of in the control chamber. AlDGT, CrDGT, NiDGT, and PbDGT continued to increase during the second phase of the experiment. There was no change in CdDGT during the second phase, while CuDGT and ZnDGT decreased by 30% and 25%, respectively in the CO2 chamber. In the sediment pore water, DGT labile fractions of all the seven elements increased substantially in the CO2 chamber. Our results show that CO2 leakage affected the solubility, particle reactivity and transformation rates of the studied metals in sediment and at the sediment-water interface. The metal species released due to CO2 acidification may have sufficiently long residence time in the seawater to affect bioavailability and toxicity of the metals to biota.  相似文献

This study assessed the accumulation of metals in a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland treating domestic wastewater of 350 PE after three years of operation. Metal concentrations in the influent wastewater, effluent, sediment, leaves, stems, and belowground biomass of Phragmites australis were analysed. Spatial variations were assessed by sampling at increasing distance from the inlet and at different positions across the width of the reed bed. All metals except Fe and Mn were efficiently removed in the CW, total metal concentrations in the effluent complied with basic environmental quality standards for surface water, and dissolved metal concentrations were often lower than analytical detection limits. Removal efficiencies varied between 49% for Ni and 93% for Al. Export of dissolved Mn and particulate Fe occurred, probably related to redox conditions in the sediment. After 3 years of operation, the sediment in the inlet area was significantly contaminated with Zn, Cu, and Cd, whereas Pb could form a contamination problem within the near future. The Cr and Ni levels in the sediment were low throughout the entire reed bed. At this stage of operation, the contamination problem was still situated within the inlet area and metal concentrations in the sediment decreased towards background values further along the treatment path. An exponential decrease of the metal mass in the sediment and belowground biomass was seen for all metals except Mn. Contrary to the other metals, Mn concentrations in the sediment increased with distance. For all metals, less than 2% of the mass removed from the wastewater after passage through the reed bed is accumulated in the aboveground reed biomass. The sediment acts as the primary sink for metals.  相似文献

The present study relates to the influence of hydraulic shock loads and total dissolved solids (TDS) on the performance of three large-scale common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) treating textile effluents, which is generated from clusters of small-scale industries in the state of Rajasthan in India. Of the three CETPs, two having capacities 7.0 and 9.0 million liters per day (mld) are located in Pali and one of capacity 6.0 mld in Balotra, District Barmer. Wastewater from about one thousand small-scale industries is treated in these CETPs. The effects of hydraulic shock loads and TDS on effluent data from secondary clarifier for parameters biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids (SS) for CETPs at Pali, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) and SS for the CETP at Balotra were studied. It was observed that the effluent BOD and SS remained within the prescribed limits for CETP Pali at 30% increased flow rate, whereas effluent COD and SS at 30% increased flow rate for CETP Balotra exceeded the prescribed limits and the CETP could sustain 20% increased flow rate. The shock loading analysis revealed that CETP Balotra had reduced capacity to sustain shock loads by 10% as compared to CETP Pali due to the presence of high TDS (15,000-20,000 mg/l). High TDS interfered with the oxygen transfer necessary for biological metabolism, thereby affected the efficiency of activated sludge process. Hence, activated sludge process treating high TDS effluents are more sensitive to hydraulic shock loads and prone to process upsets.  相似文献

Pharmaceuticals have recently emerged as novel pollutants of potential concern in the aquatic environment where they are commonly introduced as complex mixtures via municipal effluent. In the present experiment, the freshwater cnidarian Hydra attenuata was exposed to a mixture of 11 pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen, naproxen, gemfibrozil, bezafibrate, carbamazepine, sulfapyridine, oxytetracycline, novobiocin, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole and caffeine) up to 10 000 times (×) the concentration found in municipal effluent. Hydra regeneration and teratogenicity was measured, having an IC50 of 781× and was found to be non teratogenic with an A/D value of ∼ 1. Toxicity was investigated using both lethal (based on morphology) and sub-lethal (based on morphology, feeding behaviour, hydranth number and attachment) endpoints. The pharmaceutical mixture incurred a significant decrease in morphology at 0.1, 10 and 100× but a significant increase at 1000×. All parameters were significantly reduced at 10 000×. An EC50 of 425× and 65× based on morphology and feeding respectively and a toxicity threshold (TT) of 3.2× were calculated. When compared to the toxicity of each pharmaceutical exposed individually as previously reported [Quinn B, Gagné F, Blaise C. An investigation into the acute and chronic toxicity of eleven pharmaceuticals found in wastewater effluent on the cnidarian, H. attenuata. Sci Total Environ 2008a; 389: 306-314], the compounds in the mixture were present at concentrations 2 to 3 orders of magnitude lower for the equivalent toxicity (EC50 and TT). These results indicate that pharmaceuticals act additively in a mixture, having sub-lethal effects at environmentally relevant (µg/L-ng/L) concentrations and that their combined concentrations could potentially prove significantly ecotoxic to Hydra and possibly to other aquatic taxa.  相似文献

The concentrations of heavy metals in the leaves of two aquatic plants Potamogeton pectinatus L. and Potamogeton malaianus Miq., and the corresponding water and sediment samples from the Donghe River in Jishou City of Hunan Province, China were studied to investigate metal contamination from the intensive industrial activities in the surrounding area. Results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments, especially Cd, Mn and Pb, were much higher than the eco-toxic threshold values developed by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Between the two plant species, P. pectinatus showed the higher capacity in metal accumulation. The highest concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn and Mn were found in the leaves of P. pectinatus, reaching 596, 318, 62.4, 6590 and 16,000 mg kg(-1) (DW), respectively. Significantly positive relationships were observed among the concentrations of Zn, Cu and Mn in the leaves of both aquatic plants and those in water, indicating the potential use of the two plants for pollution monitoring of these metals. In addition, a laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the ability of P. pectinatus and P. malaianus to remove heavy metals from contaminated river water. The average removal efficiencies by P. pectinatus and P. malaianus for Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn and Cu from the spiked Donghe River water were 92%, 79%, 86%, 67% and 70%, respectively. The results indicated that P. pectinatus and P. malaianus had high capabilities to remove heavy metals directly from the contaminated water. The potential use of these plants in wastewater treatment is worth further exploration.  相似文献

The role of indigenous microflora of a finished compost, defined NK12, on the growth suppression of pathogens under different moisture and temperature storages was investigated. Total count of mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria was evaluated by the most probable number method and growth of seeded Salmonella arizonae 3924 serogroup B and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli 84 M in NK12 at different moisture temperature conditions was monitored. Results on sterile and non-sterile NK12 were compared. In all tested experimental conditions, the NK12 indigenous microflora was stable and biologically active. S. arizonae 3924 and E. coli 84 M grew rapidly in sterilized NK12 at different moistures and storage temperatures, and their growth was suppressed in non-sterilized NK12. Pathogens inactivation was lower when compost was stored at 40% and 80% humidity and at 37 degrees C. Our results show that the major role in the pathogens suppression was played by the indigenous microflora of the finished compost, although physical factors too influenced the growth phenomenon.  相似文献

The main objective of this work was to establish the influence of sex, maturity and reproduction on the contamination of the demersal fish Merluccius merluccius by organochlorine compounds. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and p,p′DDE were quantified in muscle, liver and gonads of female and male hakes collected in the Gulf of Lions in 2004 and 2005. Observed levels appeared higher than the population of the Bay of Biscay and lower than the population of the Thyrrenian Sea. Contaminant fingerprints were roughly constant whatever the studied organ and the hake biological condition. Concentrations varied significantly according to the sex and maturity of hakes. Mature specimens were more contaminated than immature, and males presented higher levels than females. This sex effect can be linked to a lower growth rate of males, and a contaminant elimination during female spawning. Gonadal contamination depends on the importance of lipid content and increases with the maturation degree. Although the main organ of energy and PCB storage is the liver, muscle appears as the main contributor to the gonad contamination.  相似文献

Pulicat Lake sediments are often severely polluted with mercury compounds and other toxic heavy metals. Several mercury-resistant bacteria were isolated and identified from the sediments and all the isolates exhibited broad spectrum resistance (both organic and inorganic mercuric compounds). Mercury volatilization showed that four of the isolated Bacillus cereus strains were able to reduce water soluble ionic form of mercury into volatile form via the well known enzymatic reduction. The effect of increasing concentration of mercuric chloride and phenyl mercuric acetate in the growth of this mercury reducing strain was also determined. To study the native physico-chemical parameters, which influence the bioavailability of mercury to bacteria in Pulicat Lake ecosystem, a total of 60 water and 30 sediment samples were collected and analyzed for pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, nitrate, nitrite, silicate, phosphate, organic matter and organic carbon. Increased levels of phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, silicate, organic matter and organic carbon during the post monsoon reduce the bioavailability of mercury by forming complexes which may increase the concentration of mercury in the sediments during post monsoon.  相似文献

Elevated concentrations of acidity and metals in acid mine drainage (AMD) may be effectively addressed by active and passive treatment technologies. However, typical evaluations consider only chemical water quality with little if any regard for biological metrics. Robust evaluations including both chemical and biological indicators of water quality improvement are needed. In this study, injection of alkaline fluidized bed ash (FBA) into a flooded underground coal mine was coupled with a five-cell passive treatment system to ameliorate an abandoned AMD discharge in eastern Oklahoma. The passive system included process units promoting both aerobic and anaerobic treatment mechanisms. Resulting water quality changes and biological responses were evaluated. Organisms of two distinct functional groups (the filter-feeding mollusk Corbicula fluminea and the wide-spectrum feeding fish Lepomis macrochirus) were exposed to mine waters in several treatment cells. The combination of treatment technologies was hypothesized to limit potential negative effects on these aquatic organisms. Tissues were harvested and analyzed for concentrations of several metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, Ni, Cu and Zn) of interest. Organismal responses, such as hepatosomatic index, condition factor, and condition index, did not vary significantly among organisms exposed within different treatment cells when compared to non-AMD impaired waters. Metal tissue accumulation trends, compared to aqueous concentrations, were observed for Fe, Ni and Zn. Exposure experiments with these two organisms indicated that FBA introductions coupled with passive treatment decreased the potential adverse effects of AMD to biological systems.  相似文献

Grain-size distribution, major elements, nutrients and trace metals were determined in bed sediments and suspension collected at 10 representative sites along the river Po under normal and high flow conditions. Grain-size distribution and major element composition of suspension highlighted the presence of two distinct particle populations in the upper-middle Po (coarser particles, lower carbonate content) and in the lower Po (finer particles, higher carbonate content). This change partly reflects the geological differences between the two parts of the basin, and also the presence of a hydroelectric power plant at Isola Serafini (Piacenza). With respect to environmental quality issues, bed sediments and suspension provide similar results. A moderate nutrient pollution is found in all but the uppermost parts of the river basin, while the most significant inputs of trace metals appear to originate from the urban areas of Turin and Milan. Calculation of sediment enrichment factors identifies Cd, Cu, Hg and Zn as the most impacted elements by human activities. On the other hand, the high levels of Ni and Cr throughout the river seem to derive mainly from the presence of basic rocks in the upper and middle parts of the basin. Both nutrient and trace metal particulate concentrations substantially decrease under high flow conditions possibly due to "flushing" of contaminated bed sediments and resuspension of coarser material. Under normal flow conditions, water hydrochemistry and concentrations of some elements (As, Ca, Cr, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, and Pb) in the dissolved phase (<0.45 microm) were also determined. Calculation of trace metals partition coefficients shows that the relative importance of the particulate and water phases varies in response to water hydrochemistry and suspended solid content, but that most elements achieve a conditional equilibrium in the lower stretches of the river Po. These results are the first of this kind reported for the whole river course and highlight the factors and mechanisms controlling the origin, mobility and fate of nutrients and trace metals in the river Po.  相似文献

Calcium, copper, nickel and zinc were examined for their effect on the growth of axenic filamentous bacteria which included strains of Thiothrix, type 021N and type 1701. All organisms grew best at the upper range of calcium concentrations tested. Heavy metals were also less toxic to Thiothrix strain A1 at higher calcium concentrations. Copper was more inhibitory than either nickel or zinc and copper-nickel and copper-zinc mixtures appeared to act synergistically in suppressing the development of Thiothrix strain A1. In contrast, nickel toxicity could be reduced by the addition of zinc to the medium. Metal toxicity could also be diminished by the chelating agent, EDTA; therefore, free metal ions were most likely responsible for the observed toxic effects. A computer model, MINEQL, was used to predict metal speciation and to determine the potential for various media components to control speciation of the metals. The suitability of the computer model was determined by comparison of predicted and analyzed free metal ion concentrations.  相似文献

Tellinid clams Macoma balthica were sampled every 2 months for 2.5 years at two locations from the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands) and submitted to in vitro short-term exposure to Cd, Cu and Zn. Total and heat-stable cytosolic metal concentrations have been measured before and after exposure to study the effects of the sampling season on metal uptake by the bivalve. We observed much higher uptakes of Cd and, to a lesser extent, Cu in winter than in summer, while Zn appears to be constantly regulated. These phenomena are amplified in the cytosol, especially for Cd, a non-essential element, for which the concentrations after exposure can reach 35–45 μg·g−1 (dry wt.) in winter, but only a maximum of 0.5 μg·g−1 in summer, all natural values being between 0.01 and 0.1 μg·g−1 on average. The contents (μg) of the various elements, either at the total or at the cytosolic level, are not constant, hence showing that the seasonal body weight fluctuation of the clams (dilution or concentration effect) is not the only parameter responsible for the metal uptake variability. Furthermore, we have shown that the proportion of cytosolic metal is not constant, but increases with the absolute cytosolic concentration up to 35–40. Therefore, the cytosolic phase of the cells plays a growing role in Cd, Cu and Zn storage as long as their total concentration increases.  相似文献

Concentrations of Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb and their sub-cellular distributions were determined in composite samples of digestive glands of the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris caught from two areas of the Portuguese coast characterised by contrasting metal contamination. Minor contents of Zn (1%), Cu (2%), Cd (6%) and Pb (7%) were found in the insoluble fraction, consisting of nuclei, mitochondria, lysosomes and microsome operationally separated from the whole digestive gland through a sequential centrifugation. A tendency for linear relationships between metal concentrations in nuclei, mitochondria, lysosomes and whole digestive gland was observed. These relationships suggest that despite low metal content organelles responded to the increasing accumulated metals, which means that detoxifying mechanism in cytosol was incomplete. Poorer correlations between microsome and whole digestive gland did not point to metal toxicity in the analysed compartments. However, the high accumulated Cd indicated that O. vulgaris is an important vehicle of this element to its predators in the coastal environment.  相似文献
