The health-related behaviors of a random sample (n = 92) of Hong Kong nurses were assessed by a questionnaire written either in English or in English and Chinese. Hong Kong nurses reported negligible smoking or alcohol use, low levels of breast self-examination, cervical screening behaviour and regular exercising, seat belt use and driving within the speed limit. The sample reported high levels of making efforts to avoid foods high in cholesterol, eating foods high in fibre and eating fruit daily. Dental hygiene was reported to be high. Just over half the sample reported sleeping 7-8 hours each night and eating breakfast daily. Most nurses reported maintaining their body weight at a healthy level and eating snacks between meals. The English language version of the questionnaire produced a slightly better response rate than the bilingual questionnaire. The results are discussed with reference to previous studies of females' health-related behaviours in Hong Kong and elsewhere. The implications for Hong Kong nurses' role in health promotion is discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine how school nurses attempt to involve parents of seventh graders in school health programs, identify nurses' perceptions of barriers to parental involvement, and identify related staff development needs. A questionnaire was sent to the school nurse in each school in Indiana that had a seventh grade (n = 447); 279 questionnaires were returned, a response rate of 63%. Most respondents worked in situations without written policies for parental involvement. A minority of school nurses reported receiving input from parents through advisory committees or parent surveys. The most common involvement activities were related to providing parents with information about the school health program. Less than half of the respondents reported offering health education through activities such as parent health education classes, health fairs, health education resource centers, or health newsletters. Lack of time was identified as the major barrier faced by school nurses. Several staff development needs were identified.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness and acceptability of general practitioners'opportunistic antismoking interventions by examining detailed accounts of smokers' experiences of these. DESIGN: Qualitative semistructured interview study. SETTING: South Wales. SUBJECTS: 42 participants in the Welsh smoking intervention study were asked about initial smoking, attempts to quit, thoughts about future smoking, past experiences with the health services, and the most appropriate way for health services to help them and other smokers. RESULTS: Main emerging themes were that subjects already made their own evaluations about smoking, did not believe doctors' words could influence their smoking, believed that quitting was down to the individual, and felt that doctors who took the opportunity to talk about smoking should focus on the individual patient. Smokers anticipated that they would be given antismoking advice by doctors when attending for health care; they reacted by shrugging this off, feeling guilty, or becoming annoyed. These reactions affected the help seeking behaviour of some respondents. Smokers were categorised as "contrary," "matter of fact," and "self blaming," depending on their reported reaction to antismoking advice. CONCLUSIONS: Doctor-patient relationships can be damaged if doctors routinely advise all smokers to quit. Where doctors intervene, a patient centred approach-one that considers how individual patients view themselves as smokers and how they are likely to react to different styles of intervention-is the most acceptable.  相似文献

Within the realm of oncology nursing, research has been an integral part in its development as a specialty practice. Yet despite the growing volume of published nursing research studies, little is known about how nurses working in oncology care settings perceive research. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to examine clinical oncology nurses' perceptions of research and to determine factors influencing their perceptions. Two hundred and eighty-three registered nurses providing cancer care to patients in 40 health care agencies across northern Ontario participated in the survey. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed by Alcock and colleagues (1990) which addressed nurses' perceived value of research, their role, interest and experience in research as well as the research climate of the agency. The findings showed that respondents valued nursing research and perceived a research role for staff nurses. However, the respondents did not perceive strong administrative or collegial support for nurses' involvement in research activities. In addition, the study results indicated that the clinical oncology nurses' perceptions of research were influenced by educational preparation.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to assess the current occupational hygiene practices of occupational health nurses and to assess their attitudes to the identification and initial quantification of workplace hazards. A questionnaire was mailed to all occupational health nurses registered with the South African Society of Occupational Health Nurses. Responses were obtained from 221 (53.7%). Responders and non-responders did not differ on key characteristics. Only 14 (6%) of the respondents performed occupational hygiene tasks as part of their routine work and only 31 (14%) volunteered hazard identification and quantification as tasks that would significantly improve practice. Nevertheless, when asked directly, 120 (54%) agreed that occupational hygiene fell into the ambit of occupational health nursing. Over 70% were positive about receiving theoretical and practical hygiene training. Constraints to greater hazard identification included limited time and resources and concern about intruding into the domains of other practitioners. Sufficient numbers of occupational health nurses were interested in identifying hazards in the workplace for training courses to be planned and offered now; however, restraints to practice need to be clarified and removed for these new skills to be used effectively.  相似文献

Elderly women require health screening and health promotion services from nurses and other health care providers. Nurses serving this population require knowledge of age-specific health screening and health promotion services. A case study from a geriatric nurse practitioner's practice demonstrates the complexity of these activities. A postal survey of 148 district nurses (DNs) was carried out to explore their experiences of terminal care and their views of the palliative care team. Information was also gathered on DNs' perceived educational needs in relation to palliative care. The high response rate of 87% and the additional comments that many nurses offered illustrates their desire to provide high-quality care. Factors that appeared to hinder achievement of this goal and led to stress included size of caseload, lack of knowledge and experience in managing difficult symptoms as well as time constraints. High levels of satisfaction with the palliative care team were recorded but a need for further education and improved communication were identified.  相似文献

Surveyed 296 university students and 115 faculty members by telephone and asked them to rank order 4 counseling center titles in terms of the likelihood that they would utilize services offered by the centers. The titles were Psychological and Career Exploration Service; Personal and Career Counseling Service; Psychological and Career Counseling Service; and Counseling, Career, and Consultation Service. Ss were also asked to indicate whether they had ever used or referred students to the university counseling service and how important the title of the agency was to them in deciding to use its services. Results indicate that the counseling center title was important to students and faculty in determining their use of a counseling center; both groups preferred the 1st title. The discussion focuses on the extent to which the present findings are consistent with and broaden understanding of help-seeking behavior and on implications for representing counseling center services. In current research on parenting, 2 ways of conceptualizing perceived parental autonomy support can be distinguished. Parental autonomy support can be defined in terms of promotion of independence (PI) or in terms of promotion of volitional functioning (PVF). This study aimed to establish the empirical distinctiveness of both conceptualizations and to examine their relative contribution to the prediction of adolescents' adjustment. The authors conducted 3 studies, 2 which sampled late adolescents (N = 396, mean age = 18.70 years, 79% female; and N = 495, mean age = 19.30 years, 74% female, respectively) and 1 which sampled middle adolescents (N = 153, mean age = 15.12 years, 70% female). Factor analyses pointed to the distinction between perceived PVF and PI. Structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that whereas perceived PVF uniquely predicted adjustment ( ps .05). Unrelated donor bone marrow transplants have been associated with relatively high rates of acute graft-vs.-host disease and treatment-related mortality. These complications reflect histo-incompatibility between donor and recipient. Molecular technology has recently been applied to HLA typing to identify alleles not distinguishable with serologic typing techniques. We report results in 92 unrelated marrow transplant recipients who were HLA seroidentical with donor HLA-A, -B, and -DR antigens and assess the effect of DR beta 1 and DQ beta compatibility using sequence specific oligonucleotide primers. Forty-eight patients received T-cell depleted marrow grafts, and 44 received unmodified grafts. Among recipients of unmodified marrow grafts, matching for both DR beta 1 and DQ beta reduced the rate of grade 3-4 acute graft-vs.-host disease to 38 +/- 20% vs. 73 +/- 20% among recipients mismatched for either allele (p = 0.02). This difference was not observed in recipients of T-cell depleted marrow grafts. Multivariate analysis confirmed matching for both DR beta 1 and DQ beta loci (p = 0.015), and receiving a T-cell depleted graft (p = 0.008) independently predicted for reduced risk of grade 3-4 acute graft-vs.-host disease. In conclusion, both DR beta 1 and DQ beta appear biologically important for development of acute graft-vs.-host disease in patients receiving unmanipulated marrow grafts for unrelated donor transplant.  相似文献

This article describes a project to evaluate the effectiveness of staff nurses undertaking patients' first assessment, within the community setting. District nurses selected appropriate groups of patients to delegate to the staff nurses and remained accountable for care throughout the project. Patient documentation, patient satisfaction, and GP, district nurse and staff nurse satisfaction were all audited at the end of the study period. The authors found that while the district nurses remained essential to the management of care, some work could be delegated appropriately to selected staff nurses. The standard of care was not adversely affected by the alteration in working practice.  相似文献

Participant selection biases can reduce the generalizability of research findings and lead to misestimates of intervention effectiveness. The authors examined factors associated with study participation and attrition among psychiatric outpatients recruited for the initial phase of a health promotion trial. Medical records were reviewed to obtain HIV-risk and substance abuse data, as well as psychiatric and demographic characteristics of potential participants. Of 895 eligible outpatients, 67% (n=601) consented to participate, among whom 69% (n=415) completed all baseline appointments. Compared with nonconsenters, consenters were more likely to be at risk for drug problems and to receive care from clinics serving more impaired patients. Study completion was associated with older age, a psychiatric diagnosis other than adjustment disorder and a recent sexually transmitted disease diagnosis. Thirty-two registered nurse preceptors and 42 senior undergraduate nursing students completed a survey ranking factors related to both participants in the clinical learning partnership. Mann-Whitney U-Wilcoxon Rank Sum W tests showed statistically significant differences in the ranking of four factors (the ability to give and receive criticism, knowledge of the preceptoring process, clinical competence, and compatibility) that contribute to successful learning partnerships. Nurse educators and professional nurses should acknowledge these perceptual differences and include these in student and preceptor orientation programs to promote a positive teaching and learning partnership.  相似文献
