A bi-directional evolutionary level set method for solving topology optimization problems is presented in this article. The proposed method has three main advantages over the standard level set method. First, new holes can be automatically generated in the design domain during the optimization process. Second, the dependency of the obtained optimized configurations upon the initial configurations is eliminated. Optimized configurations can be obtained even being started from a minimum possible initial guess. Third, the method can be easily implemented and is computationally more efficient. The validity of the proposed method is tested on the mean compliance minimization problem and the compliant mechanisms topology optimization problem.  相似文献

Multi-material topology optimization enables potential design possibilities in the multiphysics and structural designing fields. In this article, a bi-level hierarchical optimization method is introduced to address the multi-material design of compliant mechanisms. The hierarchical optimization develops decomposition approaches allowing the original complex multi-material optimization problem to be reduced to set of low-order single-material optimization sub-problems. The solution of the complex multi-material problem is found as a vector of the single-material sub-problems solutions. All the local sub-problems are solved with the solid isotropic material with penalization method independently, and a stiffness spreading technique is worked out to coordinate components of the global solution of the original problem. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of this method.  相似文献

A procedure to obtain a topology of an optimal structure considering flexibility is presented. The methodology is based on a mutual energy concept for formulation of flexibility and the homogenization method. A multi-objective optimization problem is formulated as an application of compliant mechanism design. The structural topology optimization approach can be used to generate compliant mechanisms for some desired input–output requirements. The success of the optimization depends on the structural geometry representation scheme used. In this paper, a novel representation scheme is proposed. The representation scheme is characterized by pairs of curves that are used to connect Input/Ouput (I/O) regions of the structure. Each pair of curves includes a normal curve and a fat curve. The areas bounded by the pair of curves define the material distribution between them. All I/O regions are connected to one another (either directly or indirectly) by pairs of curves in order to form one single connected load-bearing structure. A genetic algorithm for constrained and multiobjective optimization is then applied with the representation scheme of the structure in the form of a graph. Simulation results from a displacement inverter and a displacement redirector indicate that the presented representation scheme is appropriate.  相似文献

This article presents an alternative topology optimization method for the design of compliant actuators using mesh-free methods, in which the thermo-mechanical multi-physics modelling and geometrically non-linear analysis are included. The relatively new mesh-free method rather than the standard finite element method (FEM) is used to discretize the design domain and interpolate the bulk density field, because the mesh-free method is in some cases more capable of modelling the large-displacement compliant mechanisms involving the geometrical non-linearity. An interpolation scheme is used to indicate the dependence of material properties on element pseudo densities which are distributed to the corresponding integration points, and the method for imposing essential boundary conditions in mesh-free methods is also discussed. Furthermore, the adjoint approach is incorporated into the mesh-free method to perform the design sensitivity analysis. The optimization problem is established mathematically as a non-linear programming problem to which a sequential convex programming method is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by using a widely studied example.  相似文献

A parameterization level set method is presented for structural shape and topology optimization of compliant mechanisms involving large displacements. A level set model is established mathematically as the Hamilton–Jacobi equation to capture the motion of the free boundary of a continuum structure. The structural design boundary is thus described implicitly as the zero level set of a level set scalar function of higher dimension. The radial basis function with compact support is then applied to interpolate the level set function, leading to a relaxation and separation of the temporal and spatial discretizations related to the original partial differential equation. In doing so, the more difficult shape and topology optimization problem is now fully parameterized into a relatively easier size optimization of generalized expansion coefficients. As a result, the optimization is changed into a numerical process of implementing a series of motions of the implicit level set function via an existing efficient convex programming method. With the concept of the shape derivative, the geometrical non‐linearity is included in the rigorous design sensitivity analysis to appropriately capture the large displacements of compliant mechanisms. Several numerical benchmark examples illustrate the effectiveness of the present level set method, in particular, its capability of generating new holes inside the material domain. The proposed method not only retains the favorable features of the implicit free boundary representation but also overcomes several unfavorable numerical considerations relevant to the explicit scheme, the reinitialization procedure, and the velocity extension algorithm in the conventional level set method. A new level set method for topology optimization of distributed compliant mechanism is presented in this study. By taking two types of mean compliance into consideration, several new objective functions are developed and built in the conventional level set method to avoid generating the de facto hinges in the created mechanisms. Aimed at eliminating the costly reinitialization procedure during the evolution of the level set function, an accelerated level set evolution algorithm is developed by adding an extra energy function, which can force the level set function to close to a signed distance function during the evolution. Two widely studied numerical examples in topology optimization of compliant mechanisms are studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. This paper proposes a topology optimization method for the design of compliant circular path mechanisms, or compliant mechanisms having a set of output displacement vectors with a constant norm, which is induced by a given set of input forces. To perform the optimization, a simple linear system composed of an input force vector, an output displacement vector and a matrix connecting them is constructed in the context of a discretized linear elasticity problem using FEM. By adding two constraints: 1, the dimensions of the input and the output vectors are equal; 2, the Euclidean norms of all local input force vectors are constant; from the singular value decomposition of the matrix connecting the input force vector and the output displacement vector, the optimization problem, which specifies and equalizes the norms of all output vectors, is formulated. It is a minimization problem of the weighted summation of the condition number of the matrix and the least square error of the second singular value and the specified value. This methodology is implemented as a topology optimization problem using the solid isotropic material with penalization method, sensitivity analysis and method of moving asymptotes. The numerical examples illustrate mechanically reasonable compliant circular path mechanisms and other mechanisms having multiple outputs with a constant norm. In many real-world optimization problems, the underlying objective and constraint function(s) are evaluated using computationally expensive iterative simulations such as the solvers for computational electro-magnetics, computational fluid dynamics, the finite element method, etc. The default practice is to run such simulations until convergence using termination criteria, such as maximum number of iterations, residual error thresholds or limits on computational time, to estimate the performance of a given design. This information is used to build computationally cheap approximations/surrogates which are subsequently used during the course of optimization in lieu of the actual simulations. However, it is possible to exploit information on pre-converged solutions if one has the control to abort simulations at various stages of convergence. This would mean access to various performance estimates in lower fidelities. Surrogate assisted optimization methods have rarely been used to deal with such classes of problem, where estimates at various levels of fidelity are available. In this article, a multiple surrogate assisted optimization approach is presented, where solutions are evaluated at various levels of fidelity during the course of the search. For any solution under consideration, the choice to evaluate it at an appropriate fidelity level is derived from neighbourhood information, i.e. rank correlations between performance at different fidelity levels and the highest fidelity level of the neighbouring solutions. Moreover, multiple types of surrogates are used to gain a competitive edge. The performance of the approach is illustrated using a simple 1D unconstrained analytical test function. Thereafter, the performance is further assessed using three 10D and three 20D test problems, and finally a practical design problem involving drag minimization of an unmanned underwater vehicle. The numerical experiments clearly demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach for such classes of problem.  相似文献

A multi‐scale paradigm is proposed that utilizes periodic, small‐scale, integral compliant mechanisms within larger‐scale structures for the attenuation of vibro‐acoustic response. Amplification principles serve as the basis for the design of these mechanisms in achieving reduced energy transmission. The spectral finite element method is exploited for a force–velocity and energy flow analysis of the resultant truss‐like structures. A genetic algorithm is employed to optimize structure size for greatest effectiveness in the frequency range of interest. This study demonstrates that a significant decrease in structural vibration is achievable and suggests promising applications including the design of acoustic isolation panels for broadband vehicle noise reduction. A composite blade structure for a 2 MW horizontal axis wind turbine is optimally designed. Design requirements are simultaneously minimizing material cost and blade weight while satisfying the constraints on stress ratio, tip deflection, fatigue life and laminate layup requirements. The stress ratio and tip deflection under extreme gust loads and the fatigue life under a stochastic normal wind load are evaluated. A blade element wind load model is proposed to explain the wind pressure difference due to blade height change during rotor rotation. For fatigue life evaluation, the stress result of an implicit nonlinear dynamic analysis under a time-varying fluctuating wind is converted to the histograms of mean and amplitude of maximum stress ratio using the rainflow counting algorithm Miner's rule is employed to predict the fatigue life. After integrating and automating the whole analysis procedure an evolutionary algorithm is used to solve the discrete optimization problem.  相似文献

A concurrent-hybrid non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (hybrid NSGA-II) has been developed and applied to the simultaneous optimization of the annual energy production, flapwise root-bending moment and mass of the NREL 5 MW wind-turbine blade. By hybridizing a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) with gradient-based local search, it is believed that the optimal set of blade designs could be achieved in lower computational cost than for a conventional MOEA. To measure the convergence between the hybrid and non-hybrid NSGA-II on a wind-turbine blade optimization problem, a computationally intensive case was performed using the non-hybrid NSGA-II. From this particular case, a three-dimensional surface representing the optimal trade-off between the annual energy production, flapwise root-bending moment and blade mass was achieved. The inclusion of local gradients in the blade optimization, however, shows no improvement in the convergence for this three-objective problem.  相似文献

This article proposes an efficient metaheuristic based on hybridization of teaching–learning-based optimization and differential evolution for optimization to improve the flatness of a strip during a strip coiling process. Differential evolution operators were integrated into the teaching–learning-based optimization with a Latin hypercube sampling technique for generation of an initial population. The objective function was introduced to reduce axial inhomogeneity of the stress distribution and the maximum compressive stress calculated by Love's elastic solution within the thin strip, which may cause an irregular surface profile of the strip during the strip coiling process. The hybrid optimizer and several well-established evolutionary algorithms (EAs) were used to solve the optimization problem. The comparative studies show that the proposed hybrid algorithm outperformed other EAs in terms of convergence rate and consistency. It was found that the proposed hybrid approach was powerful for process optimization, especially with a large-scale design problem.  相似文献

It is reasonable to assume that the changing of the optimization environment is smooth when considering a dynamic multi-objective optimization problem. Learning techniques are widely used to explore the dependence structure to facilitate population re-initialization in evolutionary search paradigms. The aim of the learning techniques is to discover knowledge from history information, thereby to track the movement of the optimal front quickly through good initialization when a change occurs. In this article, a new learning strategy is proposed, where the main ideas are (1) to use mutual information to identify the relationship between previously found approximated solutions; (2) to use a stable matching mechanism strategy to associate previously found optimal solutions bijectively; and (3) to re-initialize the new population based on a kinematics model. Controlled experiments were carried out systematically on some widely used test problems. Comparison against several state-of-the-art dynamic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms showed comparable performance in favour of the developed algorithm.  相似文献

A non‐dominance criterion‐based metric that tracks the growth of an archive of non‐dominated solutions over a few generations is proposed to generate a convergence curve for multi‐objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). It was observed that, similar to single‐objective optimization problems, there were significant advances toward the Pareto optimal front in the early phase of evolution while relatively smaller improvements were obtained as the population matured. This convergence curve was used to terminate the MOEA search to obtain a good trade‐off between the computational cost and the quality of the solutions. Two analytical and two crashworthiness optimization problems were used to demonstrate the practical utility of the proposed metric. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Genetic algorithms have already been applied to various fields of engineering problems as a general optimization tool in charge of expensive sampling of the coded design space. In order to reduce such a computational cost in practice, application of evolutionary strategies is growing rapidly in the adaptive use of problem‐specific information. This paper proposes a hybrid strategy to utilize a cooperative dynamic memory of more competitive solutions combining indirect information share in ant systems with direct constructive genetic search. Some proper coding techniques are employed to enable testing the method with various sets of control parameters. As a challenging field of interest, its application to structural layout optimization is considered while an example of a traveling salesman problem is also treated as a combinatorial benchmark. This paper proposes a two-stage approach for solving multi-objective system reliability optimization problems. In this approach, a Pareto optimal solution set is initially identified at the first stage by applying a multiple objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA). Quite often there are a large number of Pareto optimal solutions, and it is difficult, if not impossible, to effectively choose the representative solutions for the overall problem. To overcome this challenge, an integrated multiple objective selection optimization (MOSO) method is utilized at the second stage. Specifically, a self-organizing map (SOM), with the capability of preserving the topology of the data, is applied first to classify those Pareto optimal solutions into several clusters with similar properties. Then, within each cluster, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) is performed, by comparing the relative efficiency of those solutions, to determine the final representative solutions for the overall problem. Through this sequential solution identification and pruning process, the final recommended solutions to the multi-objective system reliability optimization problem can be easily determined in a more systematic and meaningful way.  相似文献
