Rice husk ash of three different particle size ranges (50–75, 75–100 and 100–150 μm) a 3, 6, 9, and 12% by weight is reinforced with an aluminum alloy (AlSi10Mg) using the liquid metallurgy method. The dry sliding wear behavior of the composites in the cast conditions is examined using the pin-on-disc tribotesting machine for three different loads (20, 30, and 40 N) with three different sliding velocities (2, 3, and 4 m/s). The results reveal that the composite reinforced with the coarse rice husk ash particles exhibits superior wear resistance compared to the fine rice husk ash particles. The wear rate of the composite decreased with an increase in the weight percentage of rice husk ash particles for all size ranges. Finally, the wear mechanism was investigated with the worn surface using a scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

High strength, light weight, ease of fabrication, excellent castability, and good wear resistance make aluminum alloy composites suitable for commercial applications. In this work, a silica-rich ash particle (palmyra shell ash) was reinforced with aluminum alloy (AlSi10Mg) composites and its mechanical and tribological properties were studied. The aluminum alloy was reinforced with 3, 6, and 9 wt% of palmyra shell ash particles, and its dry sliding wear behavior was studied using a pin-on-disc machine under different loading conditions. The result shows that the dry sliding wear resistance of Al–palmyra shell ash composites was almost similar to that of fly ash– and rice husk ash–reinforced Al-alloy composites and these composites exhibit better wear resistance compared to unreinforced alloy. The palmyra shell ash particle weight fraction significantly affects the wear and friction properties of the composites. Scanning electron microscopic examination of the worn surface reveals that at various loads palmyra shell ash particles act as load-bearing constituents and the wear resistance of the reinforced palmyra shell ash with a size range of 1–50 µm was superior to that of unreinforced alloy. Mechanical properties (hardness and tensile strength) were also studied and it was observed that the reinforced Al-alloy showed a significant increase in mechanical properties.  相似文献

In the present study aluminium alloy (A356) composites containing 6 and 12 vol. % of fly ash particles have been fabricated. The dry sliding wear behaviour of unreinforced alloy and composites are studied using Pin-On-Disc machine at a load of 10, 20, 50, 65 and 80 N at a constant sliding velocity of 1 m/s. Results show that the dry sliding wear resistance of Al-fly ash composite is almost similar to that of Al2O3 and SiC reinforced Al-alloy. Composites exhibit better wear resistance compared to unreinforced alloy up to a load of 80 N. Fly ash particle size and its volume fraction significantly affect the wear and friction properties of composites. Microscopic examination of the worn surfaces, subsurfaces and debris has been done. At high loads (>50 N), where fly ash particles act as load bearing constituents, the wear resistance of A356 Al alloy reinforced with narrow size range (53–106 μm) fly ash particles were superior to that of the composite having the same volume fraction of particles in the wide size range (0.5–400 μm).  相似文献

This paper fabricated tungsten carbide (WC) particles reinforced iron matrix surface composites on gray cast iron substrate using vacuum evaporative pattern casting (V-EPC) infiltration process, investigated dry three-body abrasive wear resistance of the composites containing different volume fractions of WC particles, comparing with a high chromium cast iron. The fabricated composites contained WC particles of 5, 10, 19, 27, 36, and 52 vol.%, respectively. The results in abrasive wear tests showed that, with the increase in the volume fraction of WC particles, the wear resistance of the composites first increased until reached the maximum when the volume fraction of WC was 27%, then decreased, and was 1.5–5.2 times higher than that of the high chromium cast iron. The changes of the wear resistance of the composites with the volume fraction of WC particles and the mode of material removal in dry three-body abrasive wear condition were analyzed.  相似文献

In the present study, a new mathematical model was developed to predict the abrasive wear rate of AA7075 aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles. Five factors, five levels, central composite, rotable design matrix was used to optimise the required number of experiments. The model was developed by response surface method. Analysis of variance technique was applied to check the validity of the model. Student's t-test was utilised to find out the significant factors. The effect of volume percentage of reinforcement, reinforcement size, applied load, sliding speed and abrasive size on abrasive wear behaviour was analysed in detail.  相似文献

In this experimental study, the dry sliding wear and two-body abrasive wear behaviour of graphite filled carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composites were investigated. Carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composite was used as a reference material. Sliding wear experiments were conducted using a pin-on-disc wear tester under dry contact condition. Mass loss was determined as a function of sliding velocity for loads of 25, 50, 75, and 100 N at a constant sliding distance of 6000 m. Two-body abrasive wear experiments were performed under multi-pass condition using silicon carbide (SiC) of 150 and 320 grit abrasive papers. The effects of abrading distance and different loads have been studied. Abrasive wear volume and specific wear rate as a function of applied normal load and abrading distance were also determined. The results show that in dry sliding wear situations, for increased load and sliding velocity, higher wear loss was recorded. The excellent wear characteristics were obtained with carbon-epoxy containing graphite as filler. Especially, 10 wt.% of graphite in carbon-epoxy gave a low wear rate. A graphite surface film formed on the counterface was confirmed to be effective in improving the wear characteristics of graphite filled carbon-epoxy composites. In case of two-body abrasive wear, the wear volume increases with increasing load/abrading distance. Experimental results showed the type of counterface (hardened steel disc and SiC paper) material greatly influences the wear behaviour of the composites. Wear mechanisms of the composites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Wear of carbon-epoxy composite was found to be mainly due to a microcracking and fiber fracture mechanisms. It was found that the microcracking mechanism had been caused by progressive surface damage. Further, it was also noticed that carbon-epoxy composite wear is reduced to a greater extent by addition of the graphite filler, in which wear was dominated by microplowing/microcutting mechanisms instead of microcracking.  相似文献

Abstract

Using powder metallurgy, composites of austenitic stainless steel were produced along with unreinforced stainless steel mixed with titanium, cobalt and molybdenum particles. Wear resistance of the materials was measured by a two body pin on disc wear tester. SiC abrasive papers of 80 and 220 mesh sizes were used as abrasive media. Wear tests were performed under loads of 10, 20 and 30 N at room temperature. The abrasive wear measurements showed that the softer, unreinforced austenitic stainless steel exhibited higher mass loss than the composites. Furthermore, the abrasive wear resistance of the reinforced austenitic stainless steel composites increased with increasing FeTi, FeMo, or Co volume content. In addition, the wear rate against the 80 grade SiC abrasive paper increased more than against the 220 grade SiC abrasive paper.  相似文献

Cryo‐treatment, a bulk modification technique, is fast emerging as a way with which to improve the wear resistance of metals. This technique has also shown the ability to enhance significantly the abrasive wear performance of some polymers and their short glass‐fibre reinforced composites. In this work, short carbon‐fibre reinforced composites of some heat resistant polymers, such as polyetherimide, polyethersulphone, polyamide 6,6, polyetheretherketone, and polytetrafluoroethylene, were selected to explore the potential of cryo‐treatment. The selected materials were cryogenically treated by cooling them to the temperature of liquid nitrogen. The abrasive wear tests were carried out at ambient temperature in single pass conditions at various loads, on a pin‐on‐disc machine, using silicon carbide paper as a counterface. The investigations revealed that this technique has definite potential to increase the wear performance of carbon‐fibre reinforced composites. An increase in hardness due to cryo‐treatment was thought to be responsible for an observed improvement in wear performance. However, the extent of improvement in the wear performance was not matched by an increase in the hardness value. Scanning electron microscopy proved useful in examining the morphological changes in the composites due to cryo‐treatment.  相似文献

Fly ash, an inexpensive resource material, has been introducedinto Al-Si hypoeutectic alloy (A356) to make low-cost compositeswith decreased density and improved hardness and abrasive wearbehavior. The mechanisms of abrasive wear of stir-cast A356-5vol% fly ash composite were discussed based on the results ofwear tests of composites and the A356 base alloy. Scanningelectron microscopy was used to investigate the morphology ofthe worn surfaces, wear debris for both composite and A356 basealloy. The subsurface of the worn samples was also observed. These morphology observations provide a method to understand theabrasive wear and friction mechanism of the composites showing that the base alloy wears primarily by microcutting but thecomposite wears by microcutting and delamination caused by crackpropagation below the rubbing surface through interfaces of flyash and silicon particles with the matrix.  相似文献

The present investigation aims to find the combined effect of coarse and fine size particle reinforcement of zircon sand in aluminum alloy LM13 on the wear behavior. The composites are fabricated by varying the reinforcement of fine and coarse size zircon sand particles and compared with the single size reinforcement. Coarse and fine particle zircon sand of 106?C125 and 20?C32-??m size, respectively, are used in this study. The wear test was carried out on pin-on-disc machine. Microhardness measurement was done for developed composites. Wear track and debris are analyzed by SEM to study the wear mechanism. Line profile and EDS analysis is also done to validate the microstructural results. Study reveals that a combination of 3?% fine and 12?% coarse particle reinforced composite exhibits better wear resistance while 3?% coarse and 12?% fine particle reinforcement decreases the wear resistance. It is also observed that zircon sand particles provide effective nucleation site for the eutectic silicon. Microstructural examination shows globular and finely distributed eutectic silicon in the vicinity of the reinforced particles.  相似文献

In this study, dry sliding metal–metal and metal–abrasive wear behaviours of the aluminium matrix hybrid composites produced by pressure infiltration technique were investigated. These composites were reinforced with 37 vol% Al2O3 and 25 vol% SiC particles and contained up to 8 wt% Mg in their matrixes. While matrix hardness and compression strength increased, amount of porosity and impact toughness decreased with increasing Mg content of the matrix. Metal–metal and metal–abrasive wear tests revealed that wear resistance of the composites increased with increasing Mg addition. On the other hand, abrasive resistance decreased with increasing test temperature, especially above 200 °C.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of volume fraction and particle size of boron carbide on the abrasive wear properties of B4C particle reinforced aluminium alloy composites have been studied. For this purpose, a block-on-disc abrasion test apparatus was utilized where the samples slid against the abrasive suspension mixture at room conditions. The volume loss, specific wear rate and roughness of the samples have been evaluated. The effects of sliding time, particle content and particle size of B4C particles on the abrasive wear properties of the composites have been investigated. The dominant wear mechanisms were identified using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the specific wear rate of composites decreased with increasing particle volume fraction. Furthermore, the specific wear rate decreased with increasing the size of particle for the composites containing the same amount of B4C. Hence, it is deduced that aluminium alloy composites reinforced with larger B4C particles are more effective against the abrasive suspension mixture than those reinforced with smaller B4C particles.  相似文献

This is a comparative study between ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with micro-zinc oxide (ZnO) and nano-ZnO under different filler loads. These composites were subjected to dry sliding wear test under abrasive conditions. The micro- and nano-ZnO/UHMWPE composites were prepared by using a hot compression mould. The wear and friction behaviours were monitored using a pin-on-disc (POD) test rig. The pin-shaped samples were slid against 400 grit SiC abrasive papers, which were pasted, on the stainless steel disc under dry sliding conditions. The worn surfaces and transfer film formed were observed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Experimental results showed that UHMWPE reinforced with micro- and nano-ZnO would improve the wear behaviour. The average coefficient of friction (COF) for both micro- and nano-ZnO/UHMWPE composites were comparable to pure UHMWPE. The weight loss due to wear for nano-ZnO/UHMWPE composites are lower compared to micro-ZnO/UHMWPE and pure UHMWPE. The optimum filler loading of nano-ZnO/UHMWPE composites is found to be at 10 wt%. The worn surface of ZnO/UHMWPE composites shows the wear mechanisms of abrasive and adhesive wear. Upon reinforcement with micro- and nano-ZnO, the abrasive and adhesive wear of worn surfaces transited from rough to smooth.  相似文献

Abstract

In the current study, the possibility of replacing woven glass fibres (WGFs) with seed oil palm fibres (SOPFs) as reinforcements for tribopolymeric composites is investigated. Mainly, two different polyester composites based on woven glass reinforced polyester (WGRP) and seed oil palm reinforced polyester (SOPRP) are developed. Different volume fractions (25, 35, and 45 vol.-%) of SOPFs were considered. The experiments were performed using a block on disc (BOD) machine and the tests were conducted under dry contact condition against smooth stainless steel counterface at 2˙8 m s–1 sliding velocity, 20 N applied load for different sliding distances (up to 5 km). The wear mechanism was categorised using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results revealed that the steady state was reached after 4 km sliding distance for both WGRP and SOPRP composites. Seed oil palm reinforced polyester composites showed very high friction coefficient compared to WGRP. 35 vol.-% SOPRP composite exhibited a promising wear result, i.e. SOPFs are possible to replace WGFs in polymeric composites reinforcements whereas the wear resistance of the synthetic and natural composite were almost the same. The wear mechanisms for SOPRP composites were predominated by microcracks, deformation and pulledout of fibres while in the WGRP composite, abrasive nature was observed.  相似文献

Abstract

Nanosize B4C and/or MoS2 particles reinforced AA2219 alloy composites were prepared using the stir casting process. The wear properties were evaluated for several speed (3.14–5.65 m s?1), load (10–50 N) and distance (0–2500 m) conditions. The nanoparticles dispersion, density, wear resistance, morphology of the worn surface and loose wear debris were discussed in detail. The wear resistance improvement results by nanoparticle addition correspond well with the hardness. Between the nanocomposites, hybrid composites show significantly higher wear resistance for all load, speed and sliding distance conditions. The better wear resistance is attributed to the matrix strengthening by nanoparticles and the lubricant-rich tribolayer controlled wear in the hybrid composites. The intensity of abrasive, oxidation and delamination wear mechanisms decide the wear rate at any particular wear testing condition.  相似文献

The effects of volume fraction and size of SiCrFe, CrFeC, and Al2O3 particulates on the abrasive wear rate of compo-casted Al2024 metal matrix composites (MMCs) were studied. The process variables like the stirring speed, position and the diameter of the stirrer have affected the diffusion between particulates and matrix. The abrasive wear rate was decreased by the increase in particulate volume fraction of SiCrFe and CrFeC intermetallic reinforced composites over 80 grade SiC abrasive paper. The wear rates of the all composites decreased with aging treatment, and the best result was seen for the composite having a hybrite structure as SiCrFe and CrFeC particulates together. Nevertheless, the fabrication of composites containing soft particles as copper favors a reduction in the friction coefficient.  相似文献
