Signal Processing in Visual Cultural Heritage [From the guest editors]

The six articles in this special section focus on the application of signal processing to the analysis of visual cultural heritage. The papers are grouped int o three themes: multispectral imaging, artwork analysis, and three-dimensional (3-D) digitization and modeling.     

Resource-Constrained Signal Processing, Communications, and Networking [From the Guest Editors]

To achieve the efficient use of the two principal resources of energy and radio spectrum, wireless systems and networks should be distributed, cooperative, and opportunistic.     

Brain-Computer Interfaces [from the guest editors]

The nine articles in this special issue focus on brain-computer interfaces. The authors contributing to this special issue represent researchers who have one foot in the signal processing and machine learning community and one foot in the world of the neurosciences. The contributed articles thus represent a marriage of the two disciplines, though with an emphasis on the signal processing aspects and challenges.     

From the editors: collaborative computing community - leveraging single-user applications for multiuser distributed collaboration

Single-user interactive computer applications are pervasive in our work and daily lives. Commonly used single-user interactive applications include text editors such as Notepad and Emacs, word processors such as Office Word and OpenOffice Writer, spreadsheet tools such as Office Excel and OpenOffice Calculator, slide authoring and presentation tools such as Office PowerPoint and OpenOffice Impress, Web authoring tools such as FrontPage and Dreamweaver, CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Catia, and media creation tools such as Maya and 3D Studio Max. The choices for real-time collaborative applications, however, are limited. Most advanced real-time collaborative applications are research prototypes with limited functionalities and usability. The vast majority of existing commercial applications were designed for single users, and future applications' design is expected to continue to be single-user-centric.     

From the guest editor: it's more than tech-talk

The goal for this volume is to provide a "portable library" of leadership concepts and resources for those who have not had the opportunity to take such a course. The issue is divided into three basic sections: individual leadership; corporate leadership; and team leadership.     

Memory allocation and mapping in high-level synthesis - an integrated approach

With the increasing design complexity and performance requirement, data arrays in behavioral specification are usually mapped to memories in behavioral synthesis. This paper describes a new algorithm that overcomes two limitations of the previous works on the problem of memory-allocation and array-mapping to memories. Specifically, its key features are a tight link to the scheduling effect, which was totally or partially ignored by the existing memory synthesis systems, and supporting nonuniform access speeds among the ports of memories, which greatly diversify the possible (practical) memory configurations. Experimental data on a set of benchmark filter designs are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed exploration strategy in finding globally best memory configurations.     

Bootstrap Methods in Signal Processing [From the Guest Editors]

The bootstrap does with a computer what the experimenter would do in practice if it were possible: they would repeat the experiment. The seven articles in this special section on bootstrap methods in signal processing are summarized here.
