This is the first issue of Behavioral Neuroscience in which my name appears on the masthead as Editor. I am very pleased that Mark Blumberg, University of Iowa; John Gabrieli, Stanford University; Ann Kelley, University of Wisconsin; and Jeanne Wehner, University of Colorado, have agreed to serve as Associate Editors for the journal. Their research expertise reflects my interest in maintaining the strengths of the journal in the behavioral neuroscience of development (Mark Blumberg) and appetitive behavior and learning (Ann Kelley), as well as increasing our coverage of studies related to human and primate behavior and imaging (John Gabrieli) and mouse behavior and genetics (Jeanne Wehner). My own research program focuses on the neural mechanisms of learning and aging. We would like, of course, to invite all our readers to continue to submit some of their best work in the area of brain and behavior to Behavioral Neuroscience. In keeping with tradition, the editor of the current issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology (1980, Vol. 89, No. 4) presents an account of his policies and goals for the benefit of readers and potential authors. The author discusses the Journal's coverage, criteria for acceptance, types of articles, evaluation procedures, and the blind review process. In the 6 years since the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology was divided into three sections, Interpersonal Relations and Group Processes (IRGP) has come to be the impoverished sibling in the family. This weakness seems curious in a discipline that concentrates on human interrelatedness as its central theme. Indeed, Gordon Allport's definition in the Handbook of Social Psychology (1968) acknowledged the social core of social psychology: "an attempt to understand and explain how the thoughts, feelings and behaviors of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of others." Perhaps the short rations to which many readers have become accustomed reflected a reluctance of researchers to engage these phenomena in the individualistic Zeitgeist of the 1970s and early 1980s. Nevertheless, 1986 brings a renewed interest in the scientific study of human social bonds. It is to the dissemination of the very best of this work that this editorship is dedicated. Comment policy.

Commentary on articles published in the journal makes a scientific contribution when it (a) brings to light critical controversies, (b) identifies important misconceptions or errors of inference, and/or (c) clarifies the implications of findings. Decisions about whether to publish occasional commentaries in the Journal of Applied Psychology have been guided more by tradition than by an explicit editorial policy. With the encouragement of the APA Publications and Communications Board, I have formulated a comment policy for the journal. Once again, a change has occurred. As you probably noticed, the color of the cover for this issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (JCCP) is different, signaling the “changing of the guard” of the editorial team. JCCP has a long-standing legacy of excellence in publishing high-quality, cutting-edge, and innovative research and scholarship in clinical psychology. Its increasing Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) impact factor rating continues to attest to its influence on the field overall. As the new editor, I intend to do my utmost to preserve this reputation. Moreover, I am humbled upon reflecting on those before me in this position, as well as excited about shepherding such a premier journal over the course of the next 6 years. I am cognizant not only of the impact that this journal has on the science of clinical psychology but also of its influence on clinical practice and service delivery via the dissemination and adoption of evidenced-based interventions. In this context, I am grateful for having been able to assemble such a high-caliber team of associate and consulting editors. The American Psychological Association has recently published a set of guidelines to prospective authors which are designed to reduce sexist language in APA publications.
