Rejection of bitter substances is common in many species and may function to protect an animal from ingestion of bitter-tasting toxins. Since many plants are bitter, it has been proposed that high tolerance for bitterness would be adaptive for herbivores. Earlier studies conducted on herbivorous guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) have been used to support this proposal. We tested guinea pigs with bitter plant secondary metabolites (salicin, caffeine, quinine hydrochloride) and bitter protein hydrolysates (two types of hydrolyzed casein, hydrolyzed soy) in a series of two-choice preference tests. For comparison, we tested two nonherbivorous mouse species (Mus musculus and Peromyscus leucopus). Guinea pigs did show weaker avoidance of quinine hydrochloride than did the mice, confirming predictions generated from earlier work. However, guinea pigs had similar responses to caffeine as did Peromyscus. Both of these species showed weaker avoidance responses than Mus to 10 mM caffeine. For salicin, guinea pigs were the only species to avoid it at 10 mM and their preference scores at this concentration were significantly lower than for the two mice species. Guinea pigs avoided all of the protein hydrolysates more strongly than the other species. Responses to the protein hydrolysates did not reflect the patterns observed with the simple bitter compounds, suggesting that other properties of these complex stimuli may be responsible for guinea pig avoidance of them. Our results suggest caution in accepting, without further empirical support, the premise that guinea pigs (and herbivores in general) have a generalized reduced bitter sensitivity. The authors examined the effect of different classes of females on the plasma cortisol response of male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) from shortly after weaning through full adulthood. Males housed under standard laboratory conditions with artificial harems of 2 unrelated females of similar age were tested at 4 age ranges (~Days 40, 120, 180, and 240). At each age range, males were placed into a novel environment for 2 hr on 4 separate occasions: while alone, with 1 female cage mate, with the other female cage mate, or with an unfamiliar female. Relative preference for the 2 female cage mates was determined from observations in the home cage. Puberty was estimated by plasma testosterone levels. At the 3 youngest ages, the more preferred, less preferred, and unfamiliar females did not differentially reduce the plasma cortisol response. At 240 days of age, only the presence of the more preferred female was able to significantly reduce cortisol levels. These results demonstrate a very selective social buffering effect on the plasma cortisol response in a nonmonogamous species. This effect emerges well after sexual maturity and can be observed under standard laboratory housing. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Analyzed the nursing behavior in the precocial guinea pig. The behaviors of 6 dams with litters of 3 pups were videotaped under undisturbed conditions during both phases of the light–dark cycle and after reunion during the light phase on Days 1, 2, 3, 6, and 13 postpartum. More time was spent nursing in the light than in the dark and in the 1st wk than on Day 13. Pup licking was not required for nipple attachment to occur even on Day 1. Dams displayed a crouched nursing posture accompanied by 120 sec or more of body plus head immobility, similar to the crouched stance in the rat; body plus head immobility was rarely seen in females not in a crouched stance. Tested 30 newborn guinea pigs to determine their ability to approach an auditory stimulus early in development. Observations of the behavior of 1–4 day old Ss in a circular 8-choice maze revealed a pronounced tendency to orient toward and approach a tape-recorded signal of guinea pig vocalizations. The occurrence of approach responses was reduced to chance in Ss tested with one ear occluded by wax ear plugs which attenuated but did not totally eliminate sound. The effect of monaural ear blocks was more severe than binaural blocks, which reflects the importance of binaural cues in the maintenance of approach responses to sound. In a 2nd study with 40 Ss the ability of older animals, 11–31 days of age, was examined. Directional approach responses to sound were also evident at this age, and ear plugs disrupted performance only under monaural conditions. Furthermore, in Ss raised from birth with monaural ear blocks but tested without ear plugs, there was a subsequent disruption of performance for at least 21 days. Results indicate the importance of binaural cues in the development of early auditory spatial reponses and suggest the need for appropriate binaural experience for subsequent localization of sounds. Lactating guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and their litters were observed by videophotography across the light/dark cycle at 1, 11, 21, and 31 days postpartum. The highest level of behavioral activity was seen in the dark, particularly in the hour after light offset. This circadian pattern was evident from Day 1 in mothers and from Day 11 in pups. Contact between mothers and pups was inversely related to activity, occurring more frequently during light. Maternal grooming of pups occurred on Day 1 and then declined; self-grooming by pups increased across days. Intake of solid food and water by pups occurred on Day 1 and increased thereafter. A nearly complete transition from nursing to independent ingestion was observed between 21–31 days of age. Overall, we document several ontogenetic changes in young guinea pigs and demonstrate that under laboratory conditions mother and infant guinea pigs exhibit a nocturnal activity pattern. Behavioral discrimination tests and electroretinogram (ERG) flicker photometry were used to measure spectral sensitivity and to define the spectral mechanisms of the guinea pig. Results from these 2 approaches converge to indicate that guinea pig retinas contain rods with peak sensitivity of about 494 nm and 2 classes of cone having peak sensitivities of about 429 nm and 529 nm. The presence of 2 classes of cones suggests a retinal basis for a color vision capacity. Behavioral tests of color vision were conducted that verified this prediction: Guinea pigs have dichromatic color vision with a spectral neutral point centered at about 480 nm. The cone pigment complement of the guinea pig is different from that known to characterize other rodents. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Eating, drinking, biting attack, male mating behavior, and gnawing were elicited by electrical stimulation through electrodes located predominantly in a region extending from the preoptic area through the lateral hypothalamus into the ventral midbrain. Escape and digging were elicited from a parallel but more medial region that overlapped the lateral zone only in the preoptic-anterior hypothalamic area. Several differentiable vocalizations were produced from sites distributed through most, although not all, areas explored. Sites yielding painlike responses were located principally in the vicinity of the presumed pain pathway traced after anterolateral cordotomy in other species. Reward was obtained from widespread sites that were generally congruent with catecholaminergic systems as described in the rat. Although there was considerable overlap of the effective zones for many responses, their underlying mechanisms were differentiated anatomically by localized differences in their distribution or functionally by the elicitation of pure responses from some electrodes. Response mechanisms localized in the brain stem of the guinea pig generally resembled those in the rat, although there were differences in details, especially in the posterior midbrain and pons. Periadolescent male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) housed continuously with their mother displayed little or no sexual behavior when they were tested with her in a novel environment. However, if males were rehoused without their mother for 24 hr before testing, they frequently directed courtship and sexual behavior toward her. This effect occurred whether the mother was isolated or not during the rehousing period. In addition, rehousing without the mother produced a significant rise in the plasma testosterone levels of the males. It appears that continuous housing with the mother inhibits sexual and courtship behavior directed toward her, as well as gonadal activity, in periadolescent male guinea pigs. These effects may serve to prevent inbreeding. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The authors compared interactions of infants with mothers and unfamiliar females in a novel environment in 2 caviomorph rodent species: the harem-living Cavia aperea, the probable progenitor of the domestic guinea pig; and the pair-living Galea monasteriensis. In C. aperea, interactions with mothers and unfamiliar females were largely similar; in G. monasteriensis, interactions with the mother, but not unfamiliar female, were characterized by physical closeness and sociopositive behavior. In G. monasteriensis, plasma cortisol levels were lower when with the mother than when with the unfamiliar female. Results are consistent with the species' social organizations and suggest that behavioral interactions of pups with mothers and other females in domestic guinea pigs reflect primarily the social organization of the progenitor species rather than domestication. In mammalian species in which the young exhibit a strong filial attachment (e.g., monkeys, guinea pigs), numerous studies have shown that even brief separation from the attachment figure potently elevates circulating concentrations of glucocorticoids and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). However, effects of separation on central regulation of this stress response are not known. Therefore, we investigated central mechanisms mediating pituitary-adrenal activation during maternal separation and novelty exposure in guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) pups. Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) mRNA expression in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), and plasma cortisol and ACTH levels, were elevated only during separation in a novel environment. C-Fos activity was elevated in the medial amygdala (MeA) and reduced in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) during novelty exposure, regardless of separation. On the other hand, c-Fos activity was elevated in the PVN during separation, regardless of novelty exposure. These results demonstrate independent and combined effects of separation and novelty in regions of the guinea pig CNS that regulate pituitary-adrenal activity. Moreover, they suggest that a pathway from MeA to BNST to PVN mediates responses to novelty in the guinea pig pup, as in the adult rat, though inputs from other cell populations appear required to fully account for the HPA activity observed here. Preference tests in a novel environment (Experiment 1) and unobtrusive observations in a specialized living environment (Experiment 2) examined the attractiveness of various classes of conspecifics for maturing guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). It was found that (a) the young continued to remain near the mother well beyond weaning; (b) there was increased time spent with unrelated adult females, but not males, after weaning; (c) male and female offspring behaved similarly; and (d) littermates spent considerable time with each other. These results provide no evidence that guinea pigs approaching sexual maturity begin to associate preferentially with novel animals or potential breeding partners. Choices were largely predictable from earlier findings of the ability of various classes of conspecifics to reduce hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity of the young. Examined the responses of 75 primiparous Long-Evans rat dams and 20 nonmaternal Long-Evans females to male and female pup urine in 3 experiments. Investigatory sniffing of male and female pup urine deposits by maternal Ss was compared in a series of simultaneous choice tests given at 3-day intervals between Day 2 and Day 17 postpartum. Male urine was consistently preferred. Introduction of male but not female pup urine to the nest was found to significantly elevate maternal licking of anogenital regions of pups. Thus, urine from pups of various ages contains sex-identifying odors that differentially elicit spontaneous maternal interest. The odor of male urine may provide a sufficient stimulus to account for the greater anogenital licking that males of this species normally receive. Nonmaternal, naive, adult Ss behaved like maternal Ss, preferring male urine in the choice test, which indicates that the maternal condition of a dam is not necessary either for the olfactory discrimination or for the male odor preference. Humans were trained on 2 versions of a 2-alternative, forced-choice procedure. First, Ss judged which of 2 successive stimulus durations was longer. Second, Ss judged whether the ratio of the 2 durations was less or greater than a criterion ratio (e.g., 2:1). Accuracy was significantly lower for the task in which the judgment was made according to the ratio of the 2 durations. This result is different than that obtained by J. G. Fetterman et al (1989), who trained pigeons on a similar pair of tasks and found that pigeons' performance was comparable for the 2 discriminations. Comparisons of the pigeon and human data suggest that humans were more accurate than pigeons when the judgment involved which duration was longer, but that accuracy was comparable for the ratio-based task. The authors examined auditory distance perception using a go/no-go operant discrimination task in the laboratory. They taught male black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to discriminate degraded (far) from undegraded (near) versions of male chickadee songs and female zebra finch calls, showing for the 1st time that males can discriminate distance cues in heterospecific vocalizations and in female calls. Chickadees learned faster than zebra finches, and both species learned to discriminate chickadee songs faster than zebra finch calls. Chickadees more than zebra finches attended to amplitude in tests pitting it against other distance cues, demonstrating that amplitude is a potentially useful cue for estimating distance from vocalizations. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given choice tests (Test 1) in a maze with the odors of clean bedding, citronella, an alpha colony (ACO), shocked conspecifics (SCO), or a predator cat (PCO). In Exps 1–3, groups were exposed to no stress, defeat by a conspecific, or shocks. During subsequent tests (Test 2), nonstressed rats showed no change in odor preferences; defeated rats showed a nonsignificant reduction in preference for ACO; and shocked rats showed significant preference reductions for SCO and PCO and a significant increase in preference for ACO. In Exp 4, odors of isolated, nonstressed conspecifics (CO) were preferred more than ACO, for rats given shock before Test 2. In Exp 5, rats significantly preferred CO over ACO when exposed to a caged cat during Test 2. Because of exposure to stress, rats later avoided certain fear odors and showed strong preferences for the odors of nonstressed CO. The black-and-white pattern of the giant panda's (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) fur is a conspicuous signal and may be used for mate-choice and intraspecific communication. Here the authors examined whether they have the perceptual and cognitive potential to make use of this information. Two juvenile subjects were trained on several discrimination problems in steps of increasing difficulty, whereby the stimuli required to discriminate ranged from geometric figures to pairs of differently orientated ellipses, pairs of ellipses with the same orientation but different angles, and finally discrimination of panda-like eye-mask patterns that differed only subtly in shape. Not only did both subjects achieve significant levels of discrimination in all these tasks, they also remembered discriminations for 6 months or even 1 year after the first presentation. Thus this study provided the first solid evidence of sufficient visual and cognitive potential in the giant panda to use the fur pattern or the facial masks for individual recognition, social communication, and perhaps, mate choice. The authors analyzed the ability of male amphisbaenian (Blanus cinereus) to distinguish self-produced chemical cues from those of other conspecific males. In experiments using randomized block designs, males were presented cotton swabs bearing male stimuli, their own stimuli, and deionized water in counterbalanced sequence. Blanus cinereus directed significantly more tongue flicks at swabs treated with chemical stimuli from precloacal pores and dorsal trunk skin from conspecific males than to their own stimuli from the same sites. Response to their own precloacal pore stimuli did not differ significantly from that to deionized water, but males tongue-flicked their own dorsal trunk skin stimuli more than deionized water. More male amphisbaenians bit swabs bearing the male conspecific stimuli than the other 2 stimuli. These results suggest that males detect their own chemical stimuli from dorsal trunk skin and discriminate between their own stimuli and those of other males. Communication by chemosensory cues in amphisbaenians is discussed in relation to fossoriality. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The authors used a habituation-dishabituation procedure to test the ability of male mound-building mice (Mus spicilegus) to discriminate individual odors from males of another species of mouse. Male mound-building mice failed to spontaneously discriminate individual odors from Mus musculus musculus males, a natural competitor. After 24-hr contact with a male of one of the M. musculus subspecies (M. m. musculus or M. m. domesticus), experienced M. spicilegus males discriminated the individual odors of unfamiliar males of the same subspecies. These results confirm that discrimination of individual chemosignals is not confined to olfactory cues of a single species and provide new information about the effect of short-term contact on discrimination of individual odors across species. Animals use a variety of cue types to locate and discriminate objects. The ease with which particular cue types are learned varies across species and context. An enormous literature contains comparisons of spatial cue use to use of other cue types, but few experiments examine the ease with which various nonspatial cues are learned. In addition, few studies have examined cue use in reptiles. Thus, the authors compared whiptail lizards' (Cnemidophorus inornatus) ability to learn and reverse a discrimination using either position (left or right) or visual feature cues. Lizards learned and reversed the task using position cues faster and with greater accuracy than using feature cues. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Adult humans (Homo sapiens) and pigeons (Columba livia) were trained to discriminate artificial categories that the authors created by mimicking 2 properties of natural categories. One was a family resemblance relationship: The highly variable exemplars, including those that did not have features in common, were structured by a similarity network with the features correlating to one another in each category. The other was a polymorphous rule: No single feature was essential for distinguishing the categories, and all the features overlapped between the categories. Pigeons learned the categories with ease and then showed a prototype effect in accord with the degrees of family resemblance for novel stimuli. Some evidence was also observed for interactive effects of learning of individual exemplars and feature frequencies. Humans had difficulty in learning the categories. The participants who learned the categories generally responded to novel stimuli in an all-or-none fashion on the basis of their acquired classification decision rules. The processes that underlie the classification performances of the 2 species are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
