This paper applies C1 cubic Hermite polynomials embedded in an orthogonal collocation scheme to the spatial discretization of the unsteady nonlinear Burgers equation as a model of the equations of fluid mechanics. The temporal discretization is carried out by means of either a noniterative finite difference or an iterative finite difference procedure. Results of this method are compared with those of a second-order finite difference scheme and a splined-cubic Taylor's series scheme. Stability limits are derived and the matrix structure of the several schemes are compared.  相似文献

A two-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed for the simulation of unsteady flows on unstructured adaptive meshes. The solver is based on a second-order accurate implicit time integration using a point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme and a dual time-step subiteration. A vertex-centered, finite-volume discretization is used in conjunction with Roe’s flux-difference splitting. The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model is employed for the simulation of turbulence. An unsteady solution-adaptive dynamic mesh scheme is used by adding and deleting mesh points to take account of spatial and temporal variations of the flowfield. Unsteady viscous flow for a traveling vortex in a free stream is simulated to validate the accuracy of the dynamic mesh adaptation procedure. Flow around a circular cylinder and two blade-vortex interaction problems are investigated for demonstration of the present method. Computed results show good agreement with existing experimental and computational results. It was found that unsteady time-accurate viscous flows can be accurately simulated using the present unstructured dynamic mesh adaptation procedure.  相似文献

Transient state solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations were obtained for incompressible flow around a sphere accelerating from zero initial velocity to its terminal free falling velocity. By assuming rotational symmetry about the axis in the direction of motion, the Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation were simplified in terms of vorticity and stream function. The instantaneous acceleration of the falling sphere was calculated by considering the difference between the gravitational force and the drag force in a transient state. A set of implicit finite difference equations was developed. In order to obtain accurate information around the body, an exponential transformation along the radial direction was used to provide finer meshes in the vicinity of the surface of the sphere. The vorticity equation was solved by an alternating direction implicit (ADI) method while the stream function equation was solved by a successive over-relaxation (SOR) method. Simultaneous solutions were obtained. Transient state solutions were compared with steady state solutions for Reynolds numbers up to 300. Separations first occurred at a Reynolds number 20 for steady state flows and at Reynolds numbers 22·46 and 28·24 for transient state flows with terminal Reynolds numbers of 100 and 300, respectively. Separation angles, sizes of separation regions, and drag coefficents were calculated for both steady and unsteady states. Good agreement was obtained with existing experimental data in the steady state.  相似文献

This work extends a well-balanced second-order Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG2) scheme to provide conservative simulations for shallow flows involving wetting and drying over irregular topographies with friction effects. For this purpose, a wetting and drying technique designed originally for a finite volume (FV) scheme is improved and implemented, which includes the discretization of friction source terms via a splitting implicit integration approach. Another focus of this work is to design a fully conserved RKDG2 scheme to provide conservative solutions for both mass and momentum through a local slope limiting process. Several steady and transient benchmark tests with/without friction effects are simulated to validate the new solver and demonstrate the effects of different slope limiting processes, i.e. globally and locally slope limiting processes.  相似文献

This work deals with the modeling of a flood in an urban environment. Among the various types of urban flood events, it was decided to study specifically the severe surface flooding events, which take place in highly urbanized areas. This work concerns particularly the numerical resolution of the two-dimensional Saint Venant equations for the study of the propagation of flood through the crossroads in the city. A discontinuous finite-element space discretization with a second-order Runge-Kutta time discretization is used to solve the two-dimensional Saint Venant equations. The scheme is well suited to handle complicated geometries and requires a simple treatment of boundary conditions and source terms to obtain high-order accuracy. The explicit time integration, together with the use of orthogonal shape functions, makes the method for the investigated flows computationally more efficient than comparable second-order finite volume methods. The scheme is applied to several supercritical flows in crossroads, which are investigated by Mignot. The experimental results obtained by the author are used to verify the accuracy and the robustness of the method. The results obtained are compared to those obtained by a second-order finite volume method (Rubar20 (2D)) and by FLUENT (3D). A very good agreement between the numerical solution obtained by the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method and the experimental measured data were found. The method is then able to simulate the flow patterns observed experimentally and able to predict well the water depths, the discharge distribution in the downstream branches of the crossroad and the location of the hydraulic jumps and other flow characteristics more than the other methods.  相似文献

Performance of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based nozzles at moderate and low temperatures is numerically analyzed using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Considering the intermolecular attractive potential caused by low temperature, the generalized soft sphere collision model is introduced. The Larsen–Borgnakke model for the generalized sphere model is used to model the energy exchange between the translational and internal modes. The results for nozzle flows at an initial temperature of 300 K show that the temperature behind the throat is quite low and the intermolecular attractive potential cannot be ignored. Different working conditions in two-dimensional (2D) nozzles are simulated using the present method, including exit pressure, inlet pressure, initial temperature, nozzle geometry, and gas species. The effects on the nozzle performance are analyzed. Simulations on flows in a three-dimensional (3D) low aspect ratio flat nozzle show that the increased surface-to-volume ratio, which leads to high viscosity dissipation, causes a much lower flow characteristic and performance comparing with the 2D case.  相似文献

We present a numerical scheme to study the transient flow behaviour in complex geometries. The Navier–Stokes equations are discretized with a high-resolution Fourier pseudo-spectral discretization with adaptive time-stepping. Using a penalisation technique solid boundaries of arbitrary shape can be easily taken into account. As application we present different simulations of unsteady flows, typically encountered in chemical reactors. We study transitional flows in tube bundles (arrays of cylinders and squares) for different Reynolds numbers and angles of incidence and a channel flow with an obstacle.  相似文献

Based on the Boltzmann-BGK model equation, the unified simplified velocity distribution function equation adapted to various flow regimes can be presented by the aid of the basic characteristic on molecular movement and collision approaching to equilibrium. The optimum Golden Section principle is extended and applied to the discrete velocity ordinate method in order to discretize the corresponding velocity components, and then the molecular velocity distribution function equation will be cast into hyperbolic conservation laws form with non-linear source terms. In view of the unsteady characteristic of molecular convective movement and colliding relaxation, the time-splitting method is applied to decompose the velocity distribution function equations into the colliding relaxation equations with non-linear source terms and the convective motion equations. Based on the second-order Runge-Kutta method and the non-oscillatory, containing no free parameters, and dissipative (NND) finite difference method, the gas kinetic finite difference second-order scheme is constructed to directly solve the discrete velocity distribution functions. Four types of discrete velocity quadrature rules, such as the modified Gauss-Hermite formula and the Golden Section number-theoretic integral method, are developed and applied to evaluate the macroscopic flow moments of the distribution functions over the velocity space. As a result, a unified gas kinetic algorithm is established for the flows from rarefied transition to continuum regime. To test the reliability of the present method, the one-dimensional shock wave structures, the flows past two-dimensional circular cylinder and the three-dimensional flows over sphere with various Knudsen numbers are simulated. The computational results are found in high resolution of the flow fields and good agreement with the theoretical, DSMC, and experimental results.  相似文献

A new 3D parallel SPH scheme for free surface flows   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We propose a new robust and accurate SPH scheme, able to track correctly complex three-dimensional non-hydrostatic free surface flows and, even more important, also able to compute an accurate and little oscillatory pressure field. It uses the explicit third order TVD Runge-Kutta scheme in time, following Shu and Osher [Shu C-W, Osher S. Efficient implementation of essentially non-oscillatory shock-capturing schemes. J Comput Phys 1988;89:439-71], together with the new key idea of introducing a monotone upwind flux for the density equation, thus removing any artificial viscosity term. For the discretization of the velocity equation, the non-diffusive central flux has been used. A new flexible approach to impose the boundary conditions at solid walls is also proposed. It can handle any moving rigid body with arbitrarily irregular geometry. It does neither produce oscillations in the fluid pressure in proximity of the interfaces, nor does it have a restrictive impact on the stability condition of the explicit time stepping method, unlike the repellent boundary forces of Monaghan [Monaghan JJ. Simulating free surface flows with SPH. J Comput Phys 1994;110:399-406]. To asses the accuracy of the new SPH scheme, a 3D mesh-convergence study is performed for the strongly deforming free surface in a 3D dam-break and impact-wave test problem providing very good results. Moreover, the parallelization of the new 3D SPH scheme has been carried out using the message passing interface (MPI) standard, together with a dynamic load balancing strategy to improve the computational efficiency of the scheme. Thus, simulations involving millions of particles can be run on modern massively parallel supercomputers, obtaining a very good performance, as confirmed by a speed-up analysis. The 3D applications consist of environmental flow problems, such as dam-break flows and impact flows against a wall. The numerical solutions obtained with our new 3D SPH code have been compared with either experimental results or with other numerical reference solutions, obtaining in all cases a very satisfactory agreement.  相似文献

After looking for a convenient definition of accuracy for finite-volume schemes on structured meshes, a high-order accurate scheme is constructed for the Euler equations. Thanks to suitably weighted discretization operators, the proposed scheme is third-order on mildly deformed grids and second-order on highly deformed grids. The influence of mesh deformations on the scheme accuracy is studied theoretically and numerically. Numerical results are shown for a Lamb vortex, subsonic flow past a cylinder and transonic flow past a NACA0012 airfoil.  相似文献

The ability to simulate wall-bounded channel flows with second- and third-order shock-capturing schemes is tested on both subsonic and supersonic flow regimes, respectively at Mach 0.5 and 1.5. Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) and large-eddy simulations (LESs) are performed at Reynolds number 3000.In both flow regimes, results are compared with well-documented DNS, LES or experimental data.At Ma0=0.5, a simple second-order centred scheme provides results in excellent agreement with incompressible DNS databases, while the addition of artificial or subgrid-scale (SGS) dissipation decreases the resolution accuracy giving just satisfactory results. At Ma0=1.5, the second-order space accuracy is just sufficient to well resolve small turbulence scales on the chosen grid: without any dissipation models, such accuracy provides results in good agreement with reference data, while the addition of dissipation models considerably reduces the turbulence level and the flow appears almost laminar. Moreover, the use of explicit dissipative SGS models reduces the results accuracy. In both flow regimes, the numerical dissipation due to the discretization of the convective terms is also interpreted in terms of SGS dissipation in an LES context, yielding a generalised dynamic coefficient, equivalent to the dynamic coefficient of the Germano et al. [Phys. Fluids A 3(7) (1991) 1760] SGS model. This new generalised coefficient is thus developed to compare the order of magnitude of the intrinsic numerical dissipation of a shock-capturing scheme with respect to the SGS dissipation.  相似文献

We propose here a new approach to optimally control incompressible viscous flow past a circular cylinder for drag minimization by rotary oscillation. The flow at Re = 15000 is simulated by solving 2D Navier-Stokes equations in stream function-vorticity formulation. High accuracy compact scheme for space discretization and four stage Runge-Kutta scheme for time integration makes such simulation possible. While numerical solution for this flow field has been reported using a fast viscous-vortex method, to our knowledge, this has not been done at such a high Reynolds number by computing the Navier-Stokes equation before. The importance of scale resolution, aliasing problem and preservation of physical dispersion relation for such vortical flows of the used high accuracy schemes [Sengupta TK. Fundamentals of computational fluid dynamics. Hyderabad, India: University Press; 2004] is highlighted. For the dynamic problem, a novel genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization technique has been adopted, where solutions of Navier-Stokes equations are obtained using small time-horizons at every step of the optimization process, called a GA generation. Then the objective functions is evaluated that is followed by GA determined improvement of the decision variables. This procedure of time advancement can also be adopted to control such flows experimentally, as one obtains time-accurate solution of the Navier-Stokes equation subject to discrete changes of decision variables. The objective function - the time-averaged drag - is optimized using a real-coded genetic algorithm [Deb K. Multi-objective optimization using evolutionary algorithms. Chichester, UK: Wiley; 2001] for the two decision variables, the maximum rotation rate and the forcing frequency of the rotary oscillation. Various approaches to optimal decision variables have been explored for the purpose of drag reduction and the collection of results are self-consistent and furthermore match well with the experimental values reported in [Tokumaru PT, Dimotakis PE. Rotary oscillation control of a cylinder wake. J Fluid Mech 1991;224:77].  相似文献

The slender channel approximate equations are used to describe flows in curved channels of varying height. The governing equations are transformed in order that similar solutions can be obtained and used as initial profiles. A second-order accurate Crank-Nicolson finite difference scheme is developed with the pressure treated directly as one of the dependent variables. The rechnique is applied to several channel geometries, and solutions are obtained at various Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

A solution domain decomposition method is developed for steady state solution of the biharmonic-based Navier-Stokes equations. It consists of a domain decomposition in conjunction with Chebyshev collocation for spatial discretization. The interactions between subdomains are effectively decoupled by means of a superposition of auxiliary solutions to yield a set of independent elementary problems which can be solved concurrently on multiprocessor computers. Assessments are carried out to a number of test problems including the two-dimensional steady flow in a driven square cavity. Illustrative examples indicate a good performance of the proposed methodology which does not affect the convergence and stability of the discretization scheme. Spectral accuracy is retained with absolute error decaying in an exponential fashion. The numerical solutions for the driven cavity compare favorably against previously published numerical results except for a slight overprediction in the vertical velocity component at Reynolds number of 400. TheC 3 continuity is speculated to be its cause.  相似文献

In this article we present parallel 3D finite element computation of unsteady incompressible flows around circular cylinders. We employ stabilized finite element formulations to solve the Navier-Stokes equations on a thinking machine CM-5 supercomputer. The time integration is based on an implicit method, and the coupled, nonlinear equations generated every time step are solved iteratively, with an element-vector based evaluation technique. This strategy enables us to carry out these computations with millions of coupled, nonlinear equations, and thus resolve the flow features in great detail. At Reynolds number 300 and 800, our results indicate strong 3D features arising from the instability of the columnar vortices forming the Karman street. At Re = 10 000 we employ a large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence model.  相似文献

Textbook multigrid efficiencies for high Reynolds number simulations based on the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are attained for a model problem of flow past a finite flat plate. Elements of the full approximation scheme multigrid algorithm, including distributed relaxation, defect correction, and boundary treatment, are presented for the three main physical aspects encountered: entering flow, wake flow, and boundary layer flow. Textbook efficiencies, i.e., reduction of algebraic errors below discretization errors in one full multigrid cycle, are attained for second order accurate simulations at a laminar Reynolds number of 10,000.  相似文献
