Latency and eye movement measures were used to examine the effects of aging, clutter, and luminance on visual search for traffic signs embedded in digitized images of driving scenes. Initially 14 older and 14 younger observers classified daytime and nighttime traffic scenes as containing low or high amounts of clutter. Next, an independent sample of 14 younger and 14 older participants searched for traffic signs contained within these scenes. Errors were more common among the elderly. Search efficiency declined with increased clutter and with aging. However, relative to the young, older adults did not suffer disproportionately as a result of increased clutter. The methods developed might be profitably employed to assess sign conspicuity and sign acquisition during driving.  相似文献

This 2-part study focuses on eye movements to explain driving-related visual performance in younger and older persons. In the first task, participants' eye movements were monitored as they viewed a traffic scene image with a numeric overlay and visually located the numbers in their sequential order. The results showed that older participants had significantly longer search episodes than younger participants, and that the visual search of older adults was characterized by more fixations and shorter saccades, although the average fixation durations remained the same. In the second task, participants viewed pictures of traffic scenes photographed from the driver's perspective. Their task was to assume the role of the driver and regard the image accordingly. Results in the second task showed that older participants allocated a larger percentage of their visual scan time to a small subset of areas in the image, whereas younger participants scanned the images more evenly. Also, older participants revisited the same areas and younger participants did not. The results suggest how aging might affect the efficacy of visual information processing. Potential applications of this research include training older drivers for a more effective visual search, and providing older drivers with redundant information in case some information is missed.  相似文献

Reaction time, eye movements, and errors were measured during visual search of Web pages to determine age-related differences in performance as a function of link size, link number, link location, and clutter. Participants (15 young adults, M = 23 years; 14 older adults, M = 57 years) searched Web pages for target links that varied from trial to trial. During one half of the trials, links were enlarged from 10-point to 12-point font. Target location was distributed among the left, center, and bottom portions of the screen. Clutter was manipulated according to the percentage of used space, including graphics and text, and the number of potentially distracting nontarget links was varied. Increased link size improved performance, whereas increased clutter and links hampered search, especially for older adults. Results also showed that links located in the left region of the page were found most easily. Actual or potential applications of this research include Web site design to increase usability, particularly for older adults.  相似文献

Assessing design features of virtual keyboards for text entry   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
OBJECTIVE: The present research examined design of a virtual keyboard for text entry with a rotary controller, emphasizing users who differ in age and system experience. BACKGROUND: Existing research has minimally addressed usage frequency, age, and the effects of display shape and letter arrangement on movement and visual search components of text entry tasks. The present research was conducted to close these gaps. METHOD: Two experiments were completed to examine younger (18-28 years) and older (60-75 years) adults' movement and visual search capabilities using four keyboard shapes and three keyboard arrangements. In a third experiment examining combined effects on shape design, 32 younger (18-28 years) and 32 older (60-75 years) adults entered words on the two best shapes from the first experiments. RESULTS: For the movement task, movement time was lowest for shapes with higher shape-controller compatibility. For the visual search task, search time and accuracy were best on the alphabetic arrangement. In the combined task, shape did not significantly influence performance at different levels of practice. Transfers, however, suggested that the shape with salient visual features elicited a text entry strategy for older adults that may promote more consistent performance under occasional usage. CONCLUSION: The studies together demonstrate that keyboard shape is important for efficient performance. Shape-controller compatibility facilitated performance in both age groups. Salient features facilitate performance, especially for older adults. In nearly all cases alphabetic arrangement yielded the best performance. APPLICATION: Recommendations are provided for virtual keyboard design for different usage frequencies, contexts, and users.  相似文献

A set of studies examined the effects of cognitive distraction on visual scanning and change detection in natural traffic scenes. Experiment 1 found that a naturalistic hands-free phone conversation could disrupt change detection, thereby degrading the encoding of visual information and increasing the frequency of undetected changes. Data also revealed a tendency for conversation to impair knowledge-driven orienting of attention in older adults. Experiment 2 found that an attentive listening task produced no such effects. Actual or potential applications of this research include the design of displays and interventions to minimize the effects of cognitive distraction on human performance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between strategy use and search success on the World Wide Web (i.e., the Web) for experienced Web users. An additional goal was to extend understanding of how the age of the searcher may influence strategy use. BACKGROUND: Current investigations of information search and retrieval on the Web have provided an incomplete picture of Web strategy use because participants have not been given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of Web strategies while also searching for information on the Web. METHODS: Using both behavioral and knowledge-engineering methods, we investigated searching behavior and system knowledge for 16 younger adults (M = 20.88 years of age) and 16 older adults (M = 67.88 years). RESULTS: Older adults were less successful than younger adults in finding correct answers to the search tasks. Knowledge engineering revealed that the age-related effect resulted from ineffective search strategies and amount of Web experience rather than age per se. Our analysis led to the development of a decision-action diagram representing search behavior for both age groups. CONCLUSION: Older adults had more difficulty than younger adults when searching for information on the Web. However, this difficulty was related to the selection of inefficient search strategies, which may have been attributable to a lack of knowledge about available Web search strategies. APPLICATION: Actual or potential applications of this research include training Web users to search more effectively and suggestions to improve the design of search engines.  相似文献

This study explores younger and older adults learning of MS Publisher functionalities from a multimedia tutorial. Twenty younger and twenty three older adults assigned to a redundant (experimental) or non-redundant (control) condition were taught how to create a greeting card, while the results of their learning were assessed with immediate and delayed performance measures. While younger learners benefited from a non-redundant condition, older learners exhibited an opposite trend. Redundant condition was beneficial for their performance efficiency on a set of a transfer tasks, and their troubleshooting performance during the delayed session. From a cognitive load perspective, using a redundant text along with an audio narration overloads learner’s working memory by placing more strain on the visual pathway and not providing any additional cognitive advantage. From an environmental support standpoint and decreased processing resources view of cognitive aging, providing additional representational support helps reducing the task demands for older adults and results in better learning. The results have cognitive and practical implications for the design of multimedia learning environments for older adults.  相似文献

The luminance surrounding a computer display can potentially reduce visibility of the display (disability glare), result in sensations of discomfort (discomfort glare) and result in transient adaptation effects from fixating back and forth between the two luminance levels. The study objective was to measure the effects of surround luminance levels upon these functions in younger and older adults to determine recommended surround luminance levels. The younger age group comprised 20 subjects (mean age 27.9 years, range 23 - 39) and the older group 17 subjects (mean age 55.5 years, range 47 - 63). The central task was presented with luminance of 91 cd/M(2), tested surround luminance levels were 1.4, 2.4, 8.9, 25.5, 50, 91, 175, 317, and 600 cd/M(2). Disability glare was tested with low contrast (20%) visual acuity charts, transient adaptation was tested with a task that required regular fixation between the two luminance levels, discomfort was measured with a questionnaire after reading stories with different surround luminance levels, and preferred luminance was measured by method of adjustment. The surround luminance significantly affected transient adaptation (p < 0.0001), optimal performance occurred at 50 cd/M(2) and above for the young group and at 91 cd/M(2) and above for the older group. Neither low contrast acuity (disability glare) nor symptoms when reading were significantly affected by surround luminance. There was wide variation in preferred surround luminance; however, average preferred surround luminance was 86.9 cd/M(2) for the young group and 62.2 cd/M(2) for the older group, slightly below the central luminance of 91 cd/M(2). The effects of the surround luminance within the tested range are not large; however, the data show that the lowest surround luminance levels should be avoided and that surround luminance levels at or slightly below that of the central task are preferred.  相似文献

The effect of display polarity on visual acuity and proofreading performance was investigated for younger and older adults. An advantage of positive polarity (dark characters on light background) over negative polarity (light characters on dark background) was expected for younger adults, but the effects on older adults were ambiguous. Light scatter due to residues in the senescent lens and vitreous humour could reverse the typical advantage of positive polarity. However, age-related changes lead to a decline in retinal illuminance. Brighter positive polarity displays should help to compensate for this decline and, accordingly, lead to better performance than darker negative polarity displays. Participants conducted a visual acuity test with black optotypes on white background or white optotypes on black background and performed a proofreading task in the same polarity. A positive polarity advantage was found for both age groups. The presentation in positive polarity is recommended for all ages.

Practitioner summary: In an ageing society, age-related vision changes need to be considered when designing digital displays. Visual acuity testing and a proofreading task revealed a positive polarity advantage for younger and older adults. Dark characters on light background lead to better legibility and are strongly recommended independent of observer's age.  相似文献

The effect of a concurrent auditory task on visual search was investigated using an image-flicker technique. Participants were undergraduate university students with normal or corrected-to-normal vision who searched for changes in images of driving scenes that involved either driving-related (e.g., traffic light) or driving-unrelated (e.g., mailbox) scene elements. The results indicated that response times were significantly slower if the search was accompanied by a concurrent auditory task. In addition, slower overall responses to scenes involving driving-unrelated changes suggest that the underlying process affected by the concurrent auditory task is strategic in nature. These results were interpreted in terms of their implications for using a cellular telephone while driving. Actual or potential applications of this research include the development of safer in-vehicle communication devices.  相似文献

In order to develop a driver-car interface that adapts the presentation of messages generated by in-vehicle information systems to driver workload, two experiments investigated potential determinants of driver visual and mental workload as indicated by performance on two secondary tasks. Experiment 1 suggested that road situation is a major determinant of visual and mental workload of the driver and that the processing resources of older drivers are somewhat more limited than those of younger and middle-aged drivers. Familiarity with the area of driving (when guided) and time of day (associated with traffic density) showed no secondary task effects. Experiment 2 showed that the categorization of road situations, proposed in Experiment 1, could underlie adaptation of visually loading messages to the workload incurred by driving. This was not found with respect to mentally loading messages.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the effects of the three perceptual complexity factors: number of elements, colour variety, and graphical background clutter level, on older and younger adults’ target acquisition time within a computer display. Experiment 1 manipulated the total number of icons, Experiment 2 manipulated the variety of icon colours, and Experiment 3 manipulated the clutter level of the graphical background on the display. In each experiment, 12 older and 12 younger adults were asked to move a cursor to a target icon on the display as quickly and accurately as possible. Target size and distance to the cursor were also manipulated to yield different difficulties of targets. Target acquisition time and Fitts’ law slope were analysed. Results showed that target acquisition time increased for more difficult targets under all the three complexity factors. The amount of increase was more evident for the factors of colour variety and graphical background clutter than for the number of icons. Older participants performed more slowly than younger participants did, particularly for more difficult targets. However, the impact of the three complexity factors on acquisition time appeared to be comparable for both age groups. The results suggest that implementations of colour varieties and graphical backgrounds on interfaces should be restricted, especially when icon acquisition is a common activity involved in interacting with an interface.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of Chinese character size, number of characters per line, and number of menu items on visual search task performance on a tablet computer for different age group users. Forty-two participants participated the visual search experiment. Gender, age group (younger, middle-aged, and older), Chinese character size (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, and 25 point), number of characters per line (2–5 characters, 9–14 characters, and 15–18 characters), and number of menu items (5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 items) were the independent variables. The dependent variables included search time and error rate. Gender had a large effect size on search time. Female participants had a faster search time than male participants. Significant differences and large effect sizes were found in search performance for different character sizes, number of characters per line, and number of menu items. Nine to fourteen characters per line achieved the fastest search time and lowest error rate. The fastest search time was for a 19-point character size in the younger group; 21-point character size in the middle-aged group; and 23-point character size in the older group. Besides, the fastest search time was found when showing 9 items in the younger group; 7 items in the middle-aged group; and 5 items in the older group. The optimum visual search performance was achieved with 19-point character size showing 9 items and 9–14 characters per line for the younger group; 21-point character size showing 7 items and 9–14 characters per line for the middle-aged group; and 23-point character size showing 5 items and 9–14 characters per line for the older group. The results provide useful information for tablet computer interface-presentations for different age group users.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted in homes, offices, and public places with younger and older adults to determine how legibility performance (in a proofreading and phone book search) changes with age and luminance. Homes and public places generally exhibited much lower than recommended luminance values for reading. Older adults had higher light levels in their homes than did younger adults at reading locations. Older adults performed less quickly than did younger adults on most legibility tasks. Adding light helped younger and older adults equally for most legibility tasks (in homes and public places), though increased luminance differentially improved the performance of older office workers. In response to feedback about low light levels, nearly 60% of building managers in public places indicated in a 6-month follow-up that they had improved lighting or were planning to do so. Actual or potential applications of this work include setting luminance guidelines for adults and identifying barriers to lighting changes.  相似文献

Recent research suggests that older Internet users seem to find it more difficult to locate navigation links than to find information content in web pages. One possibility is that older Internet users’ visual exploration of web pages is more linear in nature, even when this type of processing is not appropriate for the task. In the current study, the eye movements of young and older Internet users were recorded using an ecological version of the web pages or a discursive version designed to induce a linear exploration. The older adults found more targets when performing content-oriented compared to navigation-oriented searches, thus replicating previous results. Moreover, they performed less well than young people only when required to locate navigation links and tended to outperform the younger participants in content-oriented searches. Although the type of search task and type of web page resulted in different visual strategies, little or no support was found for the hypothesis that older participants explore web pages in a more linear way in cases where this strategy was not appropriate. The main conclusion is that differences in visual exploration do not seem to mediate the specific difficulty older adults experience in navigation-oriented searches in web pages.  相似文献

Existing measures of display clutter in the literature generally exhibit weak correlations with task performance, which limits their utility in safety-critical domains. A literature review led to formulation of an integrated display data- and user knowledge-driven measure of display clutter. A driving simulation experiment was conducted in which participants were asked to search ‘high’ and ‘low’ clutter displays for navigation information. Data-driven measures and subjective perceptions of clutter were collected along with patterns of visual attention allocation and driving performance responses during time periods in which participants searched the navigation display for information. The new integrated measure was more strongly correlated with driving performance than other, previously developed measures of clutter, particularly in the case of low-clutter displays. Integrating display data and user knowledge factors with patterns of visual attention allocation shows promise for measuring display clutter and correlation with task performance, particularly for low-clutter displays.

Practitioner Summary: A novel measure of display clutter was formulated, accounting for display data content, user knowledge states and patterns of visual attention allocation. The measure was evaluated in terms of correlations with driver performance in a safety-critical driving simulation study. The measure exhibited stronger correlations with task performance than previously defined measures.  相似文献

The visual task of detecting an approaching vehicle was modeled with a neurophysiologically motivated computational vision model, the National Automotive Center-visual perception model (NAC-VPM). The scientific literature documenting age-related changes in early vision was reviewed in relationship to the components of the NAC-VPM, and the model was fit to laboratory data from older observers. The model fit the older observers' data adequately, particularly when the data was partitioned into subsets based on viewing conditions. Model fits were compared to calibrations based on younger observers' data. The calibrations based on older observers were substantially different from calibrations based on younger observers, indicating that the model can capture age-related differences in visual perception. When calibrated to the older adults' data, the model successfully predicted conditions under which vehicle detection was particularly difficult for older adults  相似文献

Glare from oncoming headlights is a problem for nighttime drivers because it can decrease visual acuity and cause discomfort. This diminished visual ability and discomfort due can increase drivers’ risk for traffic accidents. Older drivers experience more severe detrimental effects from nighttime glare, and these effects may pose a growing roadway hazard as the number of older drivers increases. The increased brightness of popular high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights may further exacerbate these visibility problems. In a sample of younger (under 40 years of age) and older (40 years of age and older) drivers, we examined the impact of headlight glare from HID and traditional halogen lights on driving performance in a simulator, as well as the effectiveness of novel polarized glare-reducing eyeglasses for mitigating glare-induced performance deficits. The glare-reducing glasses increased visual awareness in the face of oncoming HID headlights compared to halogen headlights in both age groups. Older drivers performed significantly worse than did younger drivers on several measures of driving and visual detection performance. The glare-reducing glasses mitigated performance deficits, with older drivers performing similarly to younger drivers when exposed to HID headlights while wearing the polarized glasses. Due to the introduction of brighter LED-based headlights to the consumer automotive market and an expanding population of older drivers, automotive manufactures should consider glare-mitigation strategies when designing future headlight systems.  相似文献

Preserving older pedestrians’ navigation skills in urban environments is a challenge for maintaining their quality of life. However, existing aids do not take into account older people’s perceptual and cognitive declines nor their user experience, and they call upon sensory modalities that are already used during walking. The present study was aimed at comparing different guidance instructions using visual, auditory, and haptic feedback in order to identify the most efficient and best accepted one(s). Sixteen middle-age (non-retired) adults, 21 younger-old (young-retired) adults, and 21 older-old (old-retired) adults performed a navigation task in a virtual environment. The task was performed with visual feedback (directional arrows superimposed on the visual scenes), auditory feedback (sounds in the left/right ear), haptic feedback (vibrotactile information delivered by a wristband), combinations of different types of sensory feedback, or a paper map. The results showed that older people benefited from the sensory guidance instructions, as compared to the paper map. Visual and auditory feedbacks were associated with better performance and user experience than haptic feedback or the paper map, and the benefits were the greatest among the older-old participants, even though the paper-map familiarity was appreciated. Several recommendations for designing pedestrian navigation aids are proposed.  相似文献
