Summary: Polyelectrolyte hydrogels containing diprotic acid moieties sensitive to ionic strength changes of the swelling medium were synthesized from N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA), N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (VP) and itaconic acid (IA) by using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator in the presence of the cross‐linker, methylenebisacrylamide (MBAAm). The swelling behavior of the ionic poly[(N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate)‐co‐(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone)] [P(DEAEMA/VP)] hydrogels were investigated in pure water; in NaCI solutions with pH 4 and 9; and in water‐acetone mixtures depending on the IA content in the hydrogel. The average molecular mass between cross‐links ( ) and polymer‐solvent interaction parameter (χ) of the hydrogels were determined from equilibrium swelling values. The pulsatile swelling behavior was also observed in response to solvent changes between the solution in water and in acetone. The equilibrium swelling ratio of these hydrogels was basically unaffected with change in temperature. The swelling variations were explained according to the swelling theory based on the hydrogel chemical structure.

A series of N‐isopropylacrylamide/3‐methyl‐1‐vinylimidazolium iodide (NIPAAm/MVI) copolymer gels were prepared from the various molar ratios of NIPAAm, cationic monomer MVI, and N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide (NMBA) in this study. The influence of the amount of MVI in the copolymer gels on the swelling behaviors was investigated in various aqueous saline solutions. Results showed that the swelling ratios (SRs) of copolymer gels were significantly greater than those of NIPAAm homopolymer gels, and the higher the MVI content, the higher the volume phase transition temperature. The SRs for the NIPAAm/MVI copolymer gels decreased with an increase of the salt concentration. In various saline solutions, results showed that the effect of divalent ions on the SR was greater than that of monovalent ions for these hydrogels. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Temperature‐sensitive poly[(2‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate)‐co‐(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide)] [P(DEAEMA‐co‐DMAAm)] hydrogels with five different DMAAm contents were synthesized with and without the addition of sodium carbonate as porosity generator. The synthesized hydrogels were characterized with dry gel density measurements, scanning electron microscopy observation and the determination of swelling ratio. The influence of the pore‐forming agent and content of DMAAm on swelling ratio and network parameters such as polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ), average molecular mass between crosslinks (M?c) and mesh size (ζ) of the cryogels are reported and discussed. The swelling and deswelling rates of the porous hydrogels are much faster than for the same type of hydrogels prepared via conventional methods. At a temperature below the volume phase transition temperature, the macroporous hydrogels also absorbed larger amounts water compared to that of conventional hydrogels and showed obviously higher equilibrated swelling ratios in aqueous medium. In particular, the unique macroporous structure provided numerous water channels for water diffusion in or out of the matrix and, therefore, an improved response rate to the external temperature changes during the deswelling and swelling processes. These properties are attributed to the macroporous and regularly arranged network of the porous hydrogels. Scanning electron micrographs reveal that the macroporous network structure of the hydrogels can be adjusted by applying porosity generation methods during the polymerization reaction. In this study, a novel temperature‐sensitive polymer, poly(N‐2‐methoxyisopropylacrylamide), PNMIPA, in the crosslinked hydrogel form was obtained. The monomer, N‐2‐methoxyisopropylacrylamide (NMIPA) was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reactions of acryloyl chloride with 2‐methoxyisopropylamine. Hydrogel matrix of PNMIPA was obtained by the bulk polymerization method. The bulk polymerization experiments were performed at +4°C, by using N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinker, polyethyleneglycol (PEG) 4000 as diluent, and potassium persulfate (KPS) and tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED) as the initiator and accelerator, respectively. The same polymerization procedures were applied by changing monomer, initiator, crosslinker and diluent concentrations in order to obtain crosslinked gel structures having different temperature–sensitivity properties. The equilibrium swelling ratio of PNIMPA gel matrices at constant temperature increased with increasing initiator concentration and decreasing monomer concentration. The use of PEG 4000 as diluent in the gel synthesis resulted in about two times increase in equilibrium swelling ratios in the low temperature region. A decrease in the equilibrium swelling ratios of gel matrices started at 30°C and the decrease became insignificant at 55°C. Temperature‐sensitivities were determined in two different media. Distilled water medium was used in order to observe the temperature‐sensitivity of the gel clearly and the phosphate buffer medium was used in order to represent the temperature‐sensitive swelling behavior of the gel when it is used in biological media. Step effect was applied on ambient temperature in two opposite directions in order to examine the dynamic swelling and shrinking behaviors of the gels. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrophobic poly(N‐[3‐(dimethylaminopropyl)]methacrylamide‐co‐lauryl acrylate) [P(DMAPMA‐co‐LA)] hydrogels with different LA content were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization of corresponding monomers in water by using N,N‐methylenebis(acrylamide) as the crosslinker, ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine as the activator. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels was investigated as a function of temperature and hydrophobic comonomer content in pure water. An interesting feature of the swelling behavior of the P(DMAPMA‐co‐LA) hydrogels with low LA content was the reshrinking phase transition where the hydrogels swell once and collapse as temperature was varied in the range of 30–40°C. The average molecular mass between crosslinks (M?c) and polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) of the hydrogels were calculated from equilibrium swelling values. The enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) changes appearing in the χ parameter for the hydrogels were determined by using the Flory–Rehner theory based on the phantom network model of swelling equilibrium. The positive values for ΔH and ΔS indicated that the hydrogels had a positive temperature‐sensitive property in water, that is, swelling at a higher temperature and shrinking at a lower temperature. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of thermosensitive hydrogels were prepared from the various molar ratios of N‐isopropylacrylamide, 1‐vinyl‐3‐(3‐sulfopropyl) imidazolium betaine (VSIB), and N,N′‐methylene‐bis‐acrylamide. The influence of the amount of VSIB in the copolymeric gels on the swelling behaviors in water, in various saline solutions, and at various temperatures was investigated. The results indicated that the higher the VSIB content in the hydrogel system, the higher the swelling ratio and the gel transition temperature. In the saline solution the results showed that when the concentration of salt is higher than the minimum salt concentration (MSC) of poly(VSIB), the deswelling behavior of the copolymeric gel was more effectively suppressed as more VSIB was added to the copolymeric gels. In addition, only the sample containing 12 mol % VSIB (V4) exhibited an antipolyelectrolyte's swelling behavior when the concentration of salt was higher than the MSC of poly(VSIB). This means that the swelling ratio of the hydrogel can be improved with a higher concentration salt solution. In addition, the anion effects were larger than the cation effects in the presence of a common anion (Cl) with different cations and a common cation (K+) with different anions for the hydrogel. Finally, the more VSIB in the hydrogel, the higher the diffusion coefficient in dynamic swelling. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 77: 14–23, 2000  相似文献

Three series of novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), PNIPA, and different amounts of the linear poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone), PVP, were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties and thermal response of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of the linear PVP into the temperature responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling/deswelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with varying molar ratios (25/1 to 100/1) of the monomer (N‐isopropylacrylamide) to the crosslinker (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling, the dynamic shear modulus and the effective crosslinking density, as well as tensile strength and elongation at break. Furthermore, the deswelling kinetics of the hydrogels was studied by measuring their water retention capacity. The inclusion of the linear hydrophilic PVP in the PNIPA networks increased the equilibrium degree of swelling. The tensile strength of the semi‐interpenetrating networks (SIPNs) reinforced with linear PVP was higher than that of the PNIPA networks. The elongation at break of these SIPNs varied between 22% and 55%, which are 22 – 41% larger than those for pure PNIPA networks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Hydrogels, composed of poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) and crosslinked polyacrylamide, were synthesized and the release of vitamin B12 from these hydrogels was studied as a function of the degree of crosslinking and pH of the external swelling media. The three drug‐loaded hydrogel samples synthesized with different crosslinking ratios of 0.3, 0.7, and 1.2 (in mol %) follow different drug‐release mechanisms, that is, chain relaxation with zero‐order, non‐Fickian and Fickian, or diffusion‐controlled mechanisms. To establish a correlation between their swelling behavior and drug‐release mechanism, the former was studied by the weight‐gain method and, at the same time, the concentration of the drug released was studied colorimetrically. Various swelling parameters such as the swelling exponent n, gel‐characteristic constant k, penetration velocity v, and diffusion coefficient D were evaluated to reflect the quantitative aspect of the swelling behavior of these hydrogels. Finally, the drug‐release behavior of the hydrogels was explained by proposing the swelling‐dependent mechanism. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 76: 1706–1714, 2000  相似文献

Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) gels with N,N‐methylene bisacrylamde (BIS) as crosslinker were prepared by free radical polymerization method at the temperature of 35°C, which was just around the lower critical solution temperature (LSCT) of the hydrogels. The gels synthesized at 35°C demonstrated strong swellability and fast responseability when compared with the gels synthesized at the temperature of 0 and 18°C (below the LCST) and 50 and 80°C (above the LSCT). The response rate and swelling behavior of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) gels was investigated and characterized by the temperature‐dependent swelling ratio and swelling and deswelling kinetics. The swelling behavior of the gels indicated that the synthesis temperature was the main factor when the swellability concerned and also had effect on the responseability of the resulting hydrogels. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermoresponsive hydrogels based on N‐isopropylacrylamide and N‐vinylimidazole were synthesized, and their swelling–deswelling behavior was studied as a function of the total monomer concentration. For copolymeric structures with better thermoresponsive properties with respect to poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐coN‐vinylimidazole) hydrogels, these hydrogels were protonated with HCl and HNO3, and the copolymer behaviors were compared with those of the unprotonated hydrogels. The temperature was changed from 4 to 70°C at fixed pHs and total ionic strengths. The equilibrium swelling ratio, dynamic swelling ratio, and dynamic deswelling ratio were evaluated for all the hydrogels. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: A considerable amount of research has been focused on smart hydrogels that can respond to external environmental stimuli, especially temperature and pH. In this study, fast responsive thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive poly[(N,N‐diethylacrylamide)‐co‐(acrylic acid)] hydrogels were prepared by free radical copolymerization in aqueous solution using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a pore‐forming agent. RESULTS: Swelling studies showed that the hydrogels produced had both temperature and pH sensitivity. The deswelling kinetics at high temperature demonstrated that the shrinking rates were influenced by the addition of the pore‐forming agent and the amount of acrylic acid in the initial total monomers. The deswelling curves in low‐buffer solutions had two stages. Pulsatile swelling studies indicated that the PEG‐modified hydrogels were superior to the normal ones. These different swelling properties were further confirmed by the results of scanning electron microscopy. CONCLUSION: Such fast responsive thermo‐ and pH‐sensitive hydrogels are expected to be useful in biomedical fields for stimuli‐responsive drug delivery systems. Hydrophobically modified poly[2‐(diethylamino)ethylmethacrylate‐co‐N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone/octadecyl acrylate) [P(DEAEMA‐co‐NVP/OA)] hydrogels were synthesized by free‐radical crosslinking copolymerization of 2‐(diethylamino)ethylmethacrylate (DEAEMA), N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) with different amounts of hydrophobic comonomer octadecyl acrylate (OA) in tert‐butanol with ethylene glycole dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels was investigated as a function of temperature and hydrophobic comonomer content in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). The results indicated that the swelling behavior and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogels were affected by the type and concentration of surfactant solutions. Additionally, the amount of the adsorbed SDS and DTAB molecules onto the hydrogels was determined by fluorescence measurements. An increase of OA content in the hydrogel caused an increase in the amount of adsorbed surfactant molecules in both media. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of composition on the swelling kinetics of a series of crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)s [P(N‐iPAAm)] and poly(methacrylic acid)s [P(MAA)], their statistical copolymers P(N‐iPAAm‐co‐MAA), and some sequential interpenetrating networks (IPNs) has been studied at pHs above the pKa of MAA comonomeric units. The swelling process of the hydrogels upon immersion in buffer solutions was monitored by the weight change as a function of time. First‐order kinetics apply better than second‐order kinetics which fail, especially for predicting swelling equilibrium values. However, hydrogels presenting hydrogen bonding between MAA and N‐iPAAm units do not obey either first‐order or second‐order kinetics. The high n values found indicate that the swelling process is mostly controlled by polymer relaxation. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

N‐Isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) has been copolymerized with itaconic acid (IA) in the presence of N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) as crosslinker. The swelling capacity and the release rate of aminophylline at 37 °C are reported. Maximum equilibrium swelling increases as the itaconic acid content in the hydrogel increases. The experimental data suggest clearly that the swelling process obeys second‐order kinetics. According to this, the kinetic constant, k, and the maximum equilibrium swelling, W, have been calculated. Drug release from fully swollen hydrogels follows Fick's law closely, but deviates from it for xerogels. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of intelligent hydrogels (poly(NIPA‐co‐GMA‐Dex)) were synthesized by copolymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and glycidyl methacrylate derivatized dextran (GMA‐Dex) in aqueous solution with different ratios. Their swelling behaviors at different temperatures and in different pH and ionic strengths, and their mechanical properties were studied. It has found that poly(NIPA‐co‐GMA‐Dex) hydrogels are temperature‐, pH‐, and ionic strength‐sensitive associated with the roles of the component PNIPA and GMA‐Dex, respectively. Most significantly, poly (NIPA‐co‐GMA‐Dex) hydrogels exhibit simultaneously good swelling properties and mechanical properties. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stimuli‐responsive hydrogels prepared from poly(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and its copolymers have attracted much interest to serve in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. To investigate pH‐dependent swelling and elasticity, a series of cationic hydrogels based on N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate were prepared by free radical crosslinking copolymerization at 60 °C in the presence of tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinker. The equilibrium swelling and the mechanical properties of the PDMAEMA hydrogels were investigated as a function of the gel preparation concentration. To explain the effect of pH on the equilibrium swelling of the hydrogels, pH‐dependent swelling studies were carried out in solutions of pH ranging from 2.1 to 10.7. It was found that the PDMAEMA hydrogels exhibit a rapid pH‐dependent phase transition in aqueous solutions; that is, the gels first remain in the swollen state at acidic pH then collapse in a very narrow range of pH. The results showed that the volume of PDMAEMA hydrogels in acidic conditions is about 10‐ to 40‐fold larger than that in the basic pH region. By using the Flory–Rehner theory, the characteristic network parameters of the PDMAEMA hydrogels were calculated and good agreement obtained between the swelling equilibria of hydrogels and their mechanical properties over the whole range of gel preparation concentration. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of random copolymers of acrylamide and N‐vinylimidazole, poly(AAm‐co‐NVI), with various compositions were prepared using redox copolymerization. The influence of environmental conditions such as pH, temperature, and ionic strength on the swelling behavior of the copolymeric hydrogels was investigated. The hydrogels exhibited the highest equilibrium swelling in basic medium at high temperature. Equilibrium swelling decreased with rising ionic strength at pH 5.0. As pH increased, equilibrium swelling of the hydrogels increased at pH 11.0 and I = 0.20 M. Swelling kinetics of the hydrogels was found to be non‐Fickian at 25°C. The process tended to be Fickian at higher pH and temperature. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 1783–1788, 2005  相似文献

Radiation‐induced graft polymerization of low‐density polyethylene with N‐vinylpyrrolidone, LDPE‐g‐PNVP, was used as a starting material for the synthesis of polyfunctionally substituted heterocyclic products. Thus, LDPE‐g‐PNVP reacts with ylidenemalononitrile derivatives to give the Michael addition products. In multistep reaction, LDPE‐g‐PNVP reacts with N,N‐dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (DMFDMA), hydrazine hydrate and malononitrile, respectively, to give a hydropyrrolopyridazine derivative. The latter could also be prepared via the reaction of LDPE‐g‐PNVP with DMFDMA, followed by treating with cyanoacetohydrazide. Also, LDPE‐g‐PNVP reacts with malononitrile to give an adduct product, dimer malononitrile derivative 13. The latter reacts with sulfur element to afford the thiophene derivative. Furthermore, this adduct reacts with hydrazine hydrate to isolate the original starting material, LDPE‐g‐PNVP, and aminopyridine derivative. The resulted films were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis, swelling behavior, and electron scanning microscope. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, N‐vinylpyrrolidone(VP)/methacrylic acid (MAA) mixtures have been prepared at three different mole percents which the methacrylic acid composition around 5, 10, and 15%. Poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone‐co‐methacrylicacid) P(VP/MAA) hydrogels irradiated at 3.4 kGy have been used for swelling and diffusion studies in water and uranyl ion solutions. The influence of dose, pH, relative amounts of monomers in MAA/VP monomer mixtures on the swelling properties have been investigated. P(VP/MAA) hydrogels were swollen in distilled water at pH 7.0. P(VP/MAA)1 hydrogel containing 36% (mole percent) methacrylic acid showed the maximum percent swelling in water. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for uranyl ions and P(VP/MAA) hydrogel systems. It has been found that P(VP/MAA) hydrogels have very high uptake of the uranyl ions succesfully in water containing uranyl ions. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Stimuli‐responsive hydrogels are typically obtained from non‐biodegradable monomers. The use of biodegradable crosslinkers can overcome this limitation. In this context, the main aim of this work was to use modified polycaprolactone as a crosslinker in the preparation of pH‐responsive hydrogels based on N‐isopropylacrylamide and methacrylic acid to give poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(methacrylic acid)] (P(N‐iPAAm‐co‐MAA)). RESULTS: Poly(caprolactone) dimethacrylate macromonomer was synthesized and successfully employed as crosslinker with various ratios in the synthesis of well‐known pH‐responsive hydrogels of P(N‐iPAAm‐co‐MAA). The swelling properties of these degradable hydrogels were investigated. They practically do not swell at pH = 2, but exhibit a very high swelling capacity in distilled water and in solutions of pH = 7. In addition, degradation studies at pH = 12 showed that the hydrolysis of the ester groups in the polycaprolactone chains produces, after a relatively short time, the total solubilization of the polymer chains. CONCLUSION: The hydrogels under study have certain characteristics that could make them good candidates for use as matrices in controlled drug delivery. On the one hand, they do not swell in acid pH solution (stomach conditions) but they swell extensively at neutral pH. On the other hand, they became rapidly water soluble following degradation.
