Audience fragmentation is often taken as evidence of social polarization. Yet the tools we use to study fragmentation provide limited information about how people allocate their attention across digital media. We offer a theoretical framework for understanding fragmentation and advocate for more audience‐centric studies. This approach is operationalized by applying network analysis metrics to Nielsen data on television and Internet use. We find extremely high levels of audience duplication across 236 media outlets, suggesting overlapping patterns of public attention rather than isolated groups of audience loyalists.  相似文献

Conceptualizing talk shows as persuasive messages and based on dual-processing models of persuasion, we explored the effects of nonverbal reactions of a talk show host and studio audience members to arguments presented by a talk show guest on a low-involvement topic. Participants viewed 1 of 4 versions of a talk show segment in which host and studio audience reactions shots were manipulated to be either neutral or positive. Results suggested that positive audience or host reactions can enhance persuasive influence; however, if those cues are incongruent, persuasive influence may be negated. Path analysis suggested that the host reaction's impact on attitude was indirectly experienced through both its interaction with audience response valence and its impact on perceptions of source trustworthiness. The article also addresses implications for the impact of multiple cues in persuasive messages.  相似文献

A simple two-section polarization mode dispersion(PMD) compensator is proposed for multichannel PMD compensation, which can compensate two or even more channels simultaneously. Because of the statistical characteristics and the frequency-dependence of PMD, for current single mode fiber with moderate PMD, the probability that all channels are severely degraded at the same time is extremely small, which makes it possible to compensate a dense wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM) transmission system with moderate PMD using this compensator. It is shown that the outage probability of a 40×43 Gb/s DWDM transmission system using this compensator is decreased significantly from 3.6×10-3 to 3.6×10-5.  相似文献

A photonic frequency up-conversion scheme based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) arising in a semiconductor optical amplifier for wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) baseband signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Error-free simultaneous up-conversion of 4 times 2.5 Gb/s WDM baseband channels with a 20-GHz local oscillator signal is experimentally demonstrated in the whole C-band. Compared with the cross-gain-modulation-based scheme, the proposed scheme is found to be almost independent of the wavelength separation between the probe and pump signals. Both the radio-frequency spectrum and the bit-error-ratio performance after electrical down-conversion have shown low distortion induced by the optical NPR-based up-conversion.  相似文献

Functionally, the Internet is an interconnection of packet-switched networks based on the TCP/IP protocol suite. On a physical level, it is probably better visualized as a collection of service centers interconnected to a large extent by the same worldwide infrastructure that carries voice and every other kind of communications. That infrastructure has two distinct components: the long-haul trunks operated by long-distance service providers (also known as interexchange carriers, or IXCs), and the local loops (also known as subscriber loops and "last mile" connections) that radiate from local service providers to individual customers. The dominant technology in the long-haul plant is fiber optics, which has a truly enormous (and growing) communications capacity. The latest available technology allows a single optical fiber to transport between 1000 and 2000 gigabits of data per second. More advanced technologies will increase those numbers by about an order of magnitude within a year. The buzz is about optics and the long-haul plant, but the last mile is the part to watch with the development of optics, DSL and wireless technologies  相似文献

The problem of bandwidth allocation in a packet switch supporting broadband services is addressed. To reduce the performance constraints imposed by limiting a data link to a single broadband packet channel, the author introduces the concept of channel group as a set of broadband packet channels that is viewed as a single data-link connection by routing entities. He uses a two-step bandwidth allocation scheme. At connection setup time, a call is allocated to a channel group. At transmission time, specific channels of a group are optimally allocated to the packets destined to the group. Because of the statistical smoothing of the large number of sources served by a channel group, the traffic performance of the switch is improved. This scheme also allows super-rate switching, i.e., the support of services with peak bandwidth exceeding the capacity of a single packet channel. The author shows the feasibility of this scheme in a Batcher-banyan switch, by implementing in hardware the bandwidth allocation at transmission time. Performance improvements obtained by this scheme are also provided in different traffic environments  相似文献

阐述了一种包含四路接收通道和一路发射通道的Ku波段收发组件的工作原理,并对组成的单元电路和关键技术进行了分析。试验结果表明,在2 GHz带宽和-55~+85 ℃温度下,发射通道输出功率为(31±1) dBm,带内功率平坦度≤±0.5 dB,开关隔离度≥90 dB;接收通道增益为(30±1) dB,噪声系数≤5.0 dB,通道隔离度≥60 dB。测试结果表明,方案切实可行,满足使用要求。  相似文献
