In this research, 9 series of ramie fibers were treated under low-temperature plasma with diverse output powers and treatment times. By analysis of the surface energy and adhesion power with epoxy resin, 3 groups as well as control group were chosen as reinforced fibers of composites. The influences of these parameters on the ramie fiber and its composites such as topography and mechanical properties were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), tensile property and fragmentation test of single-fiber composites. Contact angle and surface free energy results indicated that with the increased treatment times and output powers, surface energy and adhesion work with epoxy resin improved. Compared with the untreated fibers, surface energy and adhesion work with epoxy resin grew 124.5 and 59.1% after 3 min-200 w treatment. SEM and AFM showed low temperature plasma treatment etched the surface of ramie fiber to enhance the coherence between fiber and resin, consequently fiber was not easy to pull-out. After 3 min-200 w treatment, tensile strength of ramie fiber was 253.8 MPa, it had about 30.5% more than that of untreated fiber reinforced composite. Interface shear stress was complicated which was affected by properties of fiber, resin and interface. Fragmentation test showed biggest interface shear stress achieved 17.2 MPa, which represented a 54.0% increase over untreated fiber reinforced composites.  相似文献

This study is focused on the impact of oxygen plasma treatment on properties of carbon fibers and interfacial adhesion behavior between the carbon fibers and epoxy resin. The influences of the main parameters of plasma treatment process, including duration, power, and flow rate of oxygen gas were studied in detail using interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber composites. The ILSS of composites made of carbon fibers treated by oxygen plasma for 1 min, at power of 125 W, and oxygen flow rate of 100 sccm presented a maximum increase of 28% compared to composites made of untreated carbon fibers. Furthermore, carbon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile strength test, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy analyses. It was found that the concentration of reactive functional groups on the fiber surface was increased after the plasma modification, as well the surface roughness, which finally improved the interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and epoxy resin. However, high power and long exposure times could partly damage the surface of carbon fibers and decrease the tensile strength of filaments and ILSS of treated fiber composites.  相似文献

Recycled carbon fiber (RCF) was reclaimed from thermoset composite waste and employed as reinforcement from 0 to 30 wt% to prepare polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/RCF composite. Commercial virgin carbon fiber (VCF) was used as comparison. The surface morphology, chemistry, and tensile properties of carbon fibers were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X‐Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and tensile test. Results showed that the roughness, O/C ratio and –COO content of RCF surface were significantly improved after recycling. In addition, the single fiber tensile strength and modulus of RCF was lower than that of VCF. The interfacial adhesion between RCF and PVDF was much stronger due to the high chemical activity and roughness over the RCF surface. Mechanical properties of composites were investigated by flexural test, impact test, and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). It is found that the PVDF/RCF composite showed higher flexural properties, storage modulus, and lower impact strength, which indicated the strong interfacial adhesion, played an important role in reinforcing. The morphology of fracture further demonstrated the strong interface in PVDF/RCF composite. The fiber length distribution and crystallinity of composites were also evaluated to characterize the composites. The work develops potential for recycling and reuse of carbon fiber, and also expands the application of PVDF based composite. POLYM. The mutual irradiated aramid fibers in 1,4‐dichlorobutane was ammoniated by ammonia/alcohol solution, in an attempt to improve the interfacial properties between aramid fibers and epoxy matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic contact angle analysis (DCA), interfacial shear strength (IFSS), and single fiber tensile testing were carried out to investigate the functionalization process of aramid fibers and the interfacial properties of the composites. Experimental results showed that the fiber surface elements content changed obviously as well as the roughness through the radiation and chemical reaction. The surface energy and IFSS of aramid fibers increased distinctly after the ammonification, respectively. The amino groups generated by ammonification enhanced the interfacial adhesion of composites effectively by participating in the epoxy resin curing. Moreover, benefited by the appropriate radiation, the tensile strength of aramid fibers was not affected at all. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 44924.  相似文献

Kevlar 149 fibers were surface-modified by chlorosulfonation and subsequent reaction of -SO2O with some reagents (e.g. glycine, water, ethylenediamine, and 2-butanol) to improve the adhesion to epoxy resin. The mechanical properties and surface topography of the modified fibers were investigated at different reaction times and reagent concentrations. The surface functional groups introduced into the surface of the fibers were identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and static secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the fibers and epoxy resin was measured by the microbond test. The results showed that the IFSS was markedly improved (by a factor of 2.25) by the chlorosulfonation/glycine treatment and that the fiber strength was not affected. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also used to study the surface topography of fibers pulled from the epoxy resin. Furthermore, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy was used to qualitatively examine the amount of sulfur in the fiber surfaces and in the fracture surfaces of fibers from microbond pull-out specimens. The results of EDX examination were consistent with a change of the fracture mode from the interface between the fiber and the epoxy resin to a location within the fiber and/or epoxy resin as observed by SEM.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to determine the effect of surface pretreatments, prior to the silanization, on the structure and tensile properties of the glass fibers and their epoxy composites. Commercial glass fibers were washed with acetone to remove the soluble portion of sizing, calcinated for the removal of organic matter, activated for surface silanol regeneration, and silanizated with glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPS). Tensile test was carried out. The morphology of pretreated glass fibers and the fracture surfaces of the epoxy composites were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results revealed that both apparent modulus and strength of a single glass fiber and the glass fiber/epoxy resin composites strongly depend on the fiber surface pretreatments. The acetone treatment did not change appreciably the composition and tensile properties of glass fibers, but there was a weak interface between fibers and matrix. In calcinated and acid activated fibers, the two competitive effects was observed: (1) degradation of the fibers themselves and (2) improved interfacial adhesion between the glass fibers and the epoxy matrix, once the samples was silanizated. The ATR‐FTIR results show that the surface content of Si OH increases as reflected by the increasing of the Si O band, resulting in an interaction between silane coupling agent and glass fiber. In the present study, the mechanical and thermal properties of sisal fiber‐reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP)‐toughened epoxy composites were investigated. The sisal fibers were chemically treated with alkali (NaOH) and silane solutions in order to improve the interfacial interaction between fibers and matrix. The chemical composition of resins and fibers was identified by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. The UP‐toughened epoxy blends were obtained by mixing UP (5, 10, and 15 wt%) into the epoxy resin. The fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared by incorporating sisal fibers (10, 20, and 30 wt%) within the optimized UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphological changes of the fibers and the adhesion between the fibers and the UP‐toughened epoxy system. The results showed that the tensile and flexural strength of (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber (30 wt%) ‐reinforced composites increased by 83% and 55%, respectively, as compared with that of UP‐toughened epoxy blend. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the (alkali‐silane)‐treated fiber and its composite exhibited higher thermal stability than the untreated and alkali‐treated fiber systems. An increase in storage modulus and glass transition temperature was observed for the UP‐toughened epoxy matrix on reinforcement with treated fibers. The water uptake behavior of both alkali and alkali‐silane‐treated fiber‐reinforced composites is found to be less as compared with the untreated fiber‐reinforced composite. J. VINYL ADDIT. In certain applications of fiber reinforced polymer composites flexibility is required. The aim of this study was to improve flexibility of short glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites by using a liquid elastomer. For this purpose, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) based epoxy matrix was modified with hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB). A silane coupling agent (SCA) was also used to improve the interfacial adhesion between glass fibers and epoxy matrix. During specimen preparation, hardener and HTPB were premixed and left at room temperature for an hour before mixing with epoxy resin to allow possible reactions to occur. In order to compare flexibility of the specimens flexural tests were conducted and the data were evaluated numerically by using a derived relation. Test data and scanning electron microscope analysis indicated that surface treatment of glass fibers with SCA, and HTPB modification of epoxy matrix improved flexural properties especially due to the strong interaction between fibers, epoxy, and rubber. It was also observed that HTPB modification resulted in formation of relatively round rubber domains in the epoxy matrix leading to increased flexibility of the specimens.  相似文献

This work reported the effect of surface chemistry and roughness of electrospun fibers on fiber/matrix interfacial structures and the resultant macroscopical properties of composite films. Three types of fibrous mats composed of ultrafine fibers, that is, cellulose acetate (CANM), polyurethane (PUNM), and cellulose acetate/polyurethane composite (CAPUNM) were fabricated through electrospinning. CA fiber surfaces were rough with many hydroxyl groups; PU fiber surfaces were smooth, whereas CAPU composite fibers exhibited cocontiuous structure with rough surfaces. The fiber‐reinforced epoxy composite films were prepared by the solution impregnation method. The fractured surfaces of the composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Severe interfacial debonding and fiber pullouts were observed for PUNM/epoxy composites, while strong interfacial adhesion was formed for CANM/epoxy and CAPUNM/epoxy composites. The interfacial structure played important roles in the visible light transmittance of the composite films. For example, CANM/epoxy films showed the best optical property, whereas PUNM/epoxy films displayed the poorest light transmitting property and were translucent. The interfacial structure also affected the mechanical properties of the composites. The mechanical strength of fibrous mats followed an increasing order of CANM < CAPUNM < PUNM, but the mechanical strength of the composite films was in a reverse order, that is, CANM/epoxy > CAPUNM/epoxy > PUNM/epoxy. Three kinds of surface treatment, that is, the alkalization (5% w/v NaOH aqueous solution), the deposition of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) from toluene solution (1% w/v DGEBA), and the alkalization combined with the deposition of DGEBA (5% w/v NaOH/1% w/v DGEBA) were applied to modify interfacial bonding and to enhance mechanical properties of pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) reinforced epoxy composites. The fiber strength and strain were measured by single fiber test and the fiber strength variation was assessed using Weibull modulus. Furthermore, a fragmentation test was used to quantify the interfacial adhesion of PALF‐epoxy composite. It was verified that the interfacial shear strength of modified PALFs was substantially higher than that of untreated PALF by almost 2–2.7 times because of the greater interaction between the PALFs and epoxy resin matrix. The strongest interfacial adhesion was obtained from the fibers that had been received the alkalization combined with DGEBA deposition. Moreover, the flexural and impact properties of unidirectional PALF‐epoxy composites were greatly enhanced when reinforced with the modified PALFs due to an improvement in interfacial adhesion, particularly in the synergetic use of 5% NaOH and 5% NaOH/1% DGEBA. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The performance of carbon fibers-reinforced composites is dependent to a great extent on the properties of fiber–matrix interface. To improve the interfacial properties in carbon fibers/epoxy composites, nano-SiO2 particles were introduced to the surface of carbon fibers by sizing treatment. Atomic force microscope (AFM) results showed that nano-SiO2 particles had been introduced on the surface of carbon fibers and increase the surface roughness of carbon fibers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that nano-SiO2 particles increased the content of oxygen-containing groups on carbon fibers surface. Single fiber pull-out test (IFSS) and short-beam bending test (ILSS) results showed that the IFSS and ILSS of carbon fibers/epoxy composites could obtain 30.8 and 10.6% improvement compared with the composites without nano-SiO2, respectively, when the nano-SiO2 content was 1 wt % in sizing agents. Impact test of carbon fibers/epoxy composites treated by nano-SiO2 containing sizing showed higher absorption energy than that of carbon fibers/epoxy composites treated by sizing agent without nano-SiO2. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of impact fracture surface showed that the interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix was improved after nano-SiO2-modified sizing treatment. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) showed that the introduction of nano-SiO2 to carbon fibers surface effectively improved the storage modulus of carbon fibers/epoxy.  相似文献

Interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and epoxy resin plays an important role in determining performance of carbon–epoxy composites. The objective of this research is to determine the effect of fiber surface treatment (oxidization in air) on the mechanical properties (flexural strength and modulus, shear and impact strengths) of three‐dimensionally (3D) braided carbon‐fiber‐reinforced epoxy (C3D/EP) composites. Carbon fibers were air‐treated under various conditions to improve fiber–matrix adhesion. It is found that excessive oxidation will cause formation of micropits. These micropits are preferably formed in crevices of fiber surfaces. The micropits formed on fiber surfaces produce strengthened fiber–matrix bond, but cause great loss of fiber strength and is probably harmful to the overall performance of the corresponding composites. A trade‐off between the fiber–matrix bond and fiber strength loss should be considered. The effectiveness of fiber surface treatment on performance improvement of the C3D/EP composites was compared with that of the unidirectional carbon fiber–epoxy composites. In addition, the effects of fiber volume fraction (Vf) and braiding angle on relative performance improvements were determined. Results reveal obvious effects of Vf and braiding angle. A mechanism was proposed to explain the experimental phenomena. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 1040–1046, 2002  相似文献

The high modulus carbon fiber (M40J) sized by epoxy resin E51 and E20 reinforced bisphenol A dicyanate (2,2′‐bis(4‐cyanatophenyl) isopropylidene resin composite was prepared in order to investigate the influence of epoxy sizing of the fiber on the properties of the composite. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) analysis showed that epoxy resin have catalytic effect on cure reaction of cyanate ester. Mechanical properties of the composite revealed that M40J fiber sized by epoxy resin could improve the flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of M40J/bisphenol A dicyanate composites. The micro‐morphology of the composite fractures was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Reduced flaws were observed in the M40J‐bisphenol A dicyanate interface when the sized fiber was used. Water absorption of the composites was also investigated. It was found that the water absorption descended at the initial boiling stage (12 h). POLYM. COMPOS, 27: 591–598, 2006. © 2006 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Flax fibers are widely used as reinforcements in bio‐based polymer matrix composites. This study investigated the hydrophilic nature and surface purity of flax fiber that affects fiber/matrix adhesion in combination with hydrophobic structural polymers via matrix modification and the utilization of fiber treatment, specifically in a flax/vinyl ester (VE) composite. A new method to manipulate the vinyl ester system with acrylic resin (AR) was developed to produce flax reinforced. On the other hand, different types of chemical and physical treatments were applied on the flax fiber. FTIR was applied to evaluate the effects of surface treatments. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to analyze the unmodified and modified VE resin system. The surface of untreated and treated flax fibers and their composites were analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Sodium ethoxide‐treated flax/VE with 1% (wt) AR caused the best mechanical performance among all the flax/VE composites evaluated. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013  相似文献

In this study, the effects of fiber surface modification and hybrid fiber composition on the properties of the composites is presented. Jute fibers are cellulose rich (>65%) modified by alkali treatment, while the lignin rich (>40%) coconut coir fibers consist in creating quinones by oxidation with sodium chlorite in the lignin portions of fiber and react them with furfuryl alcohol (FA) to create a coating around the fiber more compatible with the epoxy resins used to prepare polymer composites. The maximum improvement on the properties was achieved for the hybrid composite containing the jute–coir content of 50 : 50. The tensile and flexural strength are recorded as 25 and 63 MPa at modified coir fiber content of 50 vol %, respectively, which are 78% and 61% higher than those obtained for unmodified fiber reinforced composites, i.e., tensile and flexural strength are 14 and 39 MPa, respectively. The reinforcement of the modified fiber was significantly enhanced the thermal stability of the composites. SEM features correlated satisfactorily with the mechanical properties of modified fiber reinforced hybrid composites. SEM analysis and water absorption measurements have confirmed the FA-grafting and shown a better compatibility at the interface between chemically modified fiber bundles and epoxy novolac resin. Hailwood–Horrobin model was used to predict the moisture sorption behavior of the hybrid composite systems. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

A carbon fiber/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane/carbon nanotube (CF–POSS–CNT) hybrid reinforcement was prepared by grafting CNTs onto the carbon fiber surface using octaglycidyldimethylsilyl POSS as the linkage in an attempt to improve the interfacial properties between carbon fibers and an epoxy matrix. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic contact angle analysis and single fiber tensile testing were performed to characterize the hybrid reinforcements. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), impact toughness, dynamic mechanical analysis and force modulation atomic force microscopy were carried out to investigate the interfacial properties of the composites. Experimental results show that POSS and CNTs are grafted uniformly on the fiber surface and significantly increase the fiber surface roughness. The polar functional groups and surface energy of carbon fibers are obviously increased after the modification. Single fiber tensile testing results demonstrate that the functionalization does not lead to any discernable decrease in the fiber tensile strength. Mechanical property test results indicate the ILSS and impact toughness are enhanced. The storage modulus and service temperature increase by 11 GPa and 17 °C, respectively. POSS and CNTs effectively enhance the interfacial adhesion of the composites by improving resin wettability, increasing chemical bonding and mechanical interlocking.  相似文献

The influence of epoxy resin modification by 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) on various properties of warp knitted viscose fabric is reported in this study. Dynamic mechanical, impact resistance, flexural, thermal properties, and burning behavior of the epoxy/viscose fabric composites are studied with respect to varying content of silane coupling agent. The results obtained for APTES‐modified epoxy resin based composites reinforced with unmodified viscose fabric composites are compared to unmodified epoxy resin based composites reinforced with APTES‐modified viscose fabric. The dynamic mechanical behavior of the APTES‐modified resin based composites indicates improved interfacial adhesion. The composites prepared from modified epoxy resin exhibited a twofold increase in impact resistance. The improved adhesion between the fiber and modified resin was also visible from the scanning electron microscope analysis of the impact fracture surface. There was less influence of resin modification on the flexural properties of the composites. The 5% APTES modification induced early degradation of composites compared to all other composites. The burning rate of all the composites under study is rated to be satisfactory for use in automotive interior applications. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Two surface modification methods—plasma surface treatment and chemical agent treatment—were used to investigate their effects on the surface properties of ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. In the analyses, performed using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, changes in weight, and scanning electron microscope observations, demonstrated that the two fiber‐surface‐modified composites formed between UHMWPE fiber and epoxy matrix exhibited improved interfacial adhesion and slight improvements in tensile strengths, but notable decreases in elongation, relative to those properties of the composites reinforced with the untreated UHMWPE fibers. In addition, three kinds of epoxy resins—neat DGEBA, polyurethane‐crosslinked DGEBA, and BHHBP‐DGEBA—were used as resin matrices to examine the tensile and elongation properties of their UHMWPE fiber‐reinforced composites. From stress/strain measurements and scanning electron microscope observations, the resin matrix improved the tensile strength apparently, but did not affect the elongation. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Woven glass-epoxy composites were prepared from mats that had been treated in a variety of ways. Fibers were coated with a commercial sizing, no sizing, and a surfactant coating. In addition, fibers were coated with styrene-isoprene copolymers at varying molar ratios using a novel technique termed admicellar polymerization. Dynamic contact angle measurements were used to quantify the effect of the different coating techniques on the fiber, while dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and flexural testing were used to characterize the cured composites. Wetting studies conducted with EPON 828 resin revealed no difference in wetting for the polymer-treated fiber compared to the commercially-treated fiber. Aqueous wetting results were consistent with a surfactant layer adsorbed on the polymer treated and surfactant treated fiber surface. DMA established that both the polymer and surfactant treatment depressed the alpha transition temperature of the composite and suggested an interpenetrating network existed at the fiber-matrix interface. Flexural strength testing showed the properties of the composites made from surfactant-treated and polymer-treated glass fibers were comparable to composites made from commercially-sized fibers and exceeded the flexural strength of the composite made from glass fibers without sizing.  相似文献

The present investigation is focused to study the permeability of natural fiber during vacuum infusion (VI) process and the effect of the surface treatments of natural fiber, fiber loading direction, resin flow direction and process parameter on the tensile properties of developed composites (sisal/bio based epoxy). The bio based resin exhibits good flow characteristics in NaOH and isocyanate treated fibers which may be attributed to change in polarity. The surface treatments appear to provide an appreciable enhancement in tensile strength through enhanced bonding between fiber and matrix. The longitudinal tensile strength has been found to be higher than that of the transverse direction and the flow along the fiber provides maximum tensile strength. It has also been demonstrated that VI process provides improved mechanical properties as compared to hand‐layup process. Morphological studies of fractured developed composites were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the de‐bonding of fiber/matrix adhesion. POLYM.
