The effect of an internal air void on the heat transfer phenomenon within encapsulated phase change material (EPCM) is examined. Heat transfer simulations are conducted on a two dimensional cylindrical capsule using sodium nitrate as the high temperature phase change material (PCM). The effects of thermal expansion of the PCM and the buoyancy driven convection within the fluid media are considered in the present thermal analysis. The melting time of three different initial locations of an internal 20% air void within the EPCM capsule are compared. Latent heat is stored within an EPCM capsule, in addition to sensible heat storage. In general, the solid/liquid interface propagates radially inward during the melting process. The shape of the solid liquid interface as well as the rate at which it moves is affected by the location of the internal air void. The case of an initial void located at the center of the EPCM capsule has the highest heat transfer rate and thus fastest melting time. An EPCM capsule with a void located at the top has the longest melting time. Since the inclusion of a void space is necessary to accommodate the thermal expansion of a PCM upon melting, understanding its effect on the heat transfer within an EPCM capsule is necessary.  相似文献

This paper is aimed at analysing the behaviour of encapsulated salt hydrates, used as latent energy storage in a heat transfer system of a domestic hot water tank. The salt is a eutectic mixture of hydrate nitrates of ammonium and magnesium, with low melting temperature, already tested for latent heat storage in domestic applications. In the discharge mode, cold water enters the tank and flows on the encapsulated melted PCM, which is cooled and solidified. In the initial condition the PCM is at its melting temperature. Suddenly its external surface is cooled to a constant temperature T0; the duration of the solidification represents the time in which the latent heat is released to water. The discharge process of the phase change material (PCM) is analyzed analytically and its effectiveness is assessed, for constant surface temperature conditions, in three different geometrical configurations, i.e. considering the PCM encapsulated in slab, cylindrical or spherical polyethylene containers. The focus is on a model of the moving boundary within the phase-change material during the discharging mode, and the duration of the phenomenon. Results shown include transient position of the moving surface, temperature distribution, amount of solid PCM, energy released, and duration of complete solidification. The influence of the geometry and the Jacob number on the ending time of solidification is investigated. Among different geometrical configurations of the PCM, it is found that the shortest time for complete solidification is matched for small spherical capsules, with high Jacob numbers and thermal conductivity.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed review of effect of phase change material (PCM) encapsulation on the performance of a thermal energy storage system (TESS). The key encapsulation parameters, namely, encapsulation size, shell thickness, shell material and encapsulation geometry have been investigated thoroughly. It was observed that the core-to-coating ratio plays an important role in deciding the thermal and structural stability of the encapsulated PCM. An increased core-to-coating ratio results in a weak encapsulation, whereas, the amount of PCM and hence the heat storage capacity decreases with a decreased core-to-coating ratio. Thermal conductivity of shell material found to have a significant influence on the heat exchange between the PCM and heat transfer fluid (HTF). This paper also reviews the solidification and melting characteristics of the PCM and the effect of various encapsulation parameters on the phase change behavior. It was observed that a higher thermal conductivity of shell material, a lower shell size and high temperature of HTF results in rapid melting of the encapsulated PCM. Conduction and natural convection found to be dominant during solidification and melt processes, respectively. A significant enhancement in heat transfer was observed with microencapsulated phase change slurry (MPCS) due to direct surface contact between the encapsulated PCM and the HTF. It was reported that the pressure drop and viscosity increases substantially with increase in volumetric concentration of the microcapsules.  相似文献

In this paper, with both void cavity and phase change considered, influence of void ratio on phase change in thermal storage canister of heat pipe receiver under microgravity is numerically simulated. Accordingly, physical and mathematical models are built. A solidification–melting model upon the enthalpy–porosity method is specially provided to deal with phase changes. The change of liquid fraction with respect to void ratio and the liquid fraction distribution of different void ratios in a thermal storage canister of a heat pipe receiver are shown. Numerical results are compared with experimental ones. Research results indicate that the void cavity prevents the process of phase change significantly. Phase-change material (PCM) melts slowly during sunlight periods and freezes slowly during eclipse periods as void ratio increases. The utility ratio of PCM during both sunlight periods and eclipse periods decreases obviously as the void ratio increases. The void cavity prevents the heat transfer between the PCM zone and canister wall. The void cavity blocks the processes of both melting and solidification during cycle orbital periods.  相似文献

An experimental analysis is presented to establish the thermal performance of a latent heat thermal storage (LHTS) unit. Paraffin is used as the phase change material (PCM) on the shell side of the shell and tube‐type LHTS unit while water is used as the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flowing through the inner tube. The fluid inlet temperature and the mass flow rate of HTF are varied and the temperature distribution of paraffin in the shell side is measured along the radial and axial direction during melting and solidification process. The total melting time is established for different mass flow rates and fluid inlet temperature of HTF. The motion of the solid–liquid interface of the PCM with time along axial and radial direction of the test unit is critically evaluated. The experimental results indicate that the melting front moves from top to bottom along the axial direction while the solidification front moves only in the radial direction. The total melting time of PCM increases as the mass flow rate and inlet temperature of HTF decreases. A correlation is proposed for the dimensionless melting time in terms of Reynolds number and Stefan number of HTF. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase change and heat transfer characteristics of a eutectic mixture of palmitic and stearic acids as phase change material (PCM) during the melting and solidification processes were determined experimentally in a vertical two concentric pipes energy storage system. This study deals with three important subjects. First is determination of the eutectic composition ratio of the palmitic acid (PA) and stearic acid (SA) binary system and measurement of its thermophysical properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Second is establishment of the phase transition characteristics of the mixture, such as the total melting and solidification temperatures and times, the heat transfer modes in the melted and solidified PCM and the effect of Reynolds and Stefan numbers as initial heat transfer fluid (HTF) conditions on the phase transition behaviors. Third is calculation of the heat transfer coefficients between the outside wall of the HTF pipe and the PCM, the heat recovery rates and heat fractions during the phase change processes of the mixture and also discussion of the effect of the inlet HTF parameters on these characteristics. The DSC results showed that the PA–SA binary system in the mixture ratio of 64.2:35.8 wt% forms a eutectic, which melts at 52.3 °C and has a latent heat of 181.7 J g−1, and thus, these properties make it a suitable PCM for passive solar space heating and domestic water heating applications with respect to climate conditions. The experimental results also indicated that the eutectic mixture of PA–SA encapsulated in the annulus of concentric double pipes has good phase change and heat transfer characteristics during the melting and solidification processes, and it is an attractive candidate as a potential PCM for heat storage in latent heat thermal energy storage systems.  相似文献

The thermal and heat transfer characteristics of lauric acid during the melting and solidification processes were determined experimentally in a vertical double pipe energy storage system. In this study, three important subjects were addressed. The first one is temperature distributions and temporal temperature variations in the radial and axial distances in the phase change material (PCM) during phase change processes. The second one is the thermal characteristics of the lauric acid, which include total melting and total solidification times, the nature of heat transfer in melted and solidified PCM and the effect of Reynolds and Stefan numbers as inlet heat transfer fluid (HTF) conditions on the phase transition parameters. The final one is to calculate the heat transfer coefficient and the heat flow rate and also discuss the role of Reynolds and Stefan numbers on the heat transfer parameters. The experimental results proved that the PCM melts and solidifies congruently, and the melting and solidification front moved from the outer wall of the HTF pipe (HTFP) to the inner wall of the PCM container in radial distances as the melting front moved from the top to the bottom of the PCM container in axial distances. However, it was difficult to establish the solidification proceeding at the axial distances in the PCM. Though natural convection in the liquid phase played a dominant role during the melting process due to buoyancy effects, the solidification process was controlled by conduction heat transfer, and it was slowed by the conduction thermal resistance through the solidified layer. The results also indicated that the average heat transfer coefficient and the heat flow rate were affected by varying the Reynolds and Stefan numbers more during the melting process than during the solidification process due to the natural convection effect during the melting process.  相似文献

Abstract

A latent heat thermal energy storage system with phase change material (PCM) is numerically studied. To enhance the heat transfer inside the system, a highly conductive metal foam is employed with ceramic nanoparticles. The latter method of enhancement leads to a new class of material called Nano-PCM. The system under investigation is a 70-L tank filled up with pure PCM or Nano-PCM and several pipes are situated where the heat transfer fluid (HTF) flows. The pipe surfaces are assumed at constant temperature above the PCM melting temperature to simulate the heat transfer from the HTF. The enthalpy-porosity theory is applied to simulate the PCM phase change, while the porous media formulation is assumed to describe the metal foam behavior. The nano-PCM is modeled with single-phase model where the properties are the weighted-average between the fluid base and the nanoparticles. The simulations are accomplished for charging-discharging process at different porosities and nanoparticle concentration. The results are given in term of average melting fraction evolution, average temperature as function of time, average stored energy. The metal foam significantly improves the heat transfer between PCM and HTF respect to the addition of nanoparticles, reducing the charging and discharging time more than one order of magnitude.  相似文献

A thermal network model is developed and used to analyze heat transfer in a high temperature latent heat thermal energy storage unit for solar thermal electricity generation. Specifically, the benefits of inserting multiple heat pipes between a heat transfer fluid and a phase change material (PCM) are of interest. Two storage configurations are considered; one with PCM surrounding a tube that conveys the heat transfer fluid, and the second with the PCM contained within a tube over which the heat transfer fluid flows. Both melting and solidification are simulated. It is demonstrated that adding heat pipes enhances thermal performance, which is quantified in terms of dimensionless heat pipe effectiveness.  相似文献

In this paper, a simple computational model for isothermal phase change of phase change material (PCM) encapsulated in a single container is presented. The mathematical model was based on an enthalpy formulation with equations cast in such a form that the only unknown variable is the PCM’s temperature. The theoretical model was verified with a test problem and an experiment performed in order to assess the validity of the assumptions of the mathematical model. With very good agreement between experimental and computational data, it can be concluded that conduction within the PCM in the direction of heat transfer fluid flow, thermal resistance of the container’s wall, and the effects of natural convection within the melt can be ignored for the conditions investigated in this study. The numerical analysis of the melting time for rectangular and cylindrical containers was then performed using the computational model presented in this paper. Results show that the rectangular container requires nearly half of the melting time as for the cylindrical container of the same volume and heat transfer area.  相似文献

Thermal performance characteristics of a eutectic mixture of lauric and stearic acids as phase change material (PCM) during the melting and solidification processes were determined experimentally in a vertical two concentric pipe-energy storage system. This study deals with three important subjects: The first one is to determine the eutectic composition ratio of the lauric acid (LA) and stearic acid (SA) binary system, and to measure its thermophysical properties by DSC. The second one is to establish the thermal characteristics of the mixture such as total melting and solidification times, the heat transfer modes in melted and solidified PCM, and the effect of Reynolds and Stefan numbers as inlet heat transfer fluid (HTF) conditions on the phase transition behaviors. The final one includes the calculations of the heat transfer coefficients between the outside wall of the HTF pipe and the PCM, and heat fractions during the melting and solidification processes of the mixture, and also the discussion of the effect of inlet HTF parameters on these characteristics. The LA–SA binary system in the mixture ratio of 75.5:24.5 wt % forms a eutectic, which melts at 37°C and has a latent heat of 182.7 J g−1, and, thus, these properties make it an attractive phase change material used for passive solar space heating applications such as building and greenhouse heating with respect to the climate conditions. The experimental results indicated that the mixture encapsulated in the annulus of two concentric pipes has good thermal and heat transfer characteristics during the melting and solidification processes, and it has potential for heat storage in passive solar space heating systems.  相似文献

This paper is aimed at analyzing the melting behavior of paraffin wax as a phase change material (PCM) encapsulated in a cylindrical capsule, used in a latent heat thermal energy storage system with a solar water heating collector. The heat for melting of PCM in the capsule is provided by hot water surrounding it. Since it is observed experimentally that the phase change occurs in a range of temperature, the present analysis considers this range instead of constant phase change temperature and the deviation between the results of these two is presented. The numerical analysis has been carried out by using enthalpy method and the results are verified with the experimental data. The experiments have been done by visualization technique without disturbing the actual process of melting. Three distinct stages of melting process have been identified as revealed by visualization studies. Results indicate that the melting process is chiefly governed by the magnitude of the Stefan number, Ste, phase change temperature range and the capsule radius. The analysis shows that the agreement between analytical and experimental results is significantly improved when the results are obtained considering phase change temperature range and the natural convection in the liquid phase instead of considering the process to be conduction dominated only.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to study the thermal performance of latent cool thermal energy storage system using packed bed containing spherical capsules filled with phase change material during charging and discharging process. According to the energy balance of the phase change material (PCM) and heat transfer fluid (HTF), a mathematical model of packed bed is conducted. n-tetradecane is taken as PCM and aqueous ethylene glycol solution of 40% volumetric concentration is considered as HTF. The temperatures of the PCM and HTF, solid and melt fraction and cool stored and released rate with time are simulated. The effects of the inlet temperature and flow rate of HTF, porosity of packed bed and diameter of capsules on the melting time, solidification time, cool stored and released rate during charging and discharging process are also discussed.  相似文献

Fatty acids are bio-based materials that can be used as phase change materials (PCMs). Microencapsulation of low carbon number fatty acids for mainly building applications have been realized in previous studies. In this study, behenic acid (BA), a fatty acid with medium melting range (65°C-85°C), has been microencapsulated for the first time. PMMA and its three copolymers were used as shell material of these novel encapsulated PCMs prepared by emulsion polymerization technique. The influences of using different comonomers in shell materials on the thermal, morphological, and chemical properties were investigated. Melting phase change temperature ranges were found as 65°C to 85°C for all capsule candidates. Capsules had uniform spherical geometry with size ranges under 500 nm. The capsules are suggested as novel PCM candidates in this temperature range that has potential applications in industrial waste heat, electronics, solar residential heating, lithium-ion batteries, and automotive application.  相似文献

This paper describes the experimental studies carried out to test thermal cycling of a real-scale PCM–air heat exchanger at ambient temperatures. To achieve this goal an experimental setup previously designed and used for testing real-scale prototypes of PCM–air heat exchangers is modified. The PCM used is commercially available, organic, and paraffin based. The total energy exchanged during melting and solidification, as well as the time elapsed until total melting/solidification are determined from the power curves experimentally obtained. The influence of the inlet air temperature and air flow is studied, and results show that the continuous thermal cycling of the unit is a repetitive process: running experiments with similar conditions leads to the same thermal behavior, no degradation in the PCM properties is noticed. Pressure drop is measured for different air flows. Depending on the inlet air temperature, full solidification of the PCM could be achieved in less than 3 h for an 8 °C temperature difference between the inlet air and the average phase change of the PCM. Average thermal powers of up to 4.5 kW and 3.5 kW for 1 h are obtained for melting and solidification stages, respectively. An empirical model is developed from the experimental results, which could be a useful designing tool for applications that use such technology: green housing, curing and drying processes, plant production, HVAC, and free-cooling.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage performance of fatty acids and a eutectic mixture as phase change materials (PCMs) has been investigated experimentally. The selected PCMs for this study were palmitic acid, myristic acid, stearic acid, and a mixture of stearic and myristic acids in eutectic combination ratio of 65.7 wt% myristic acid and 34.3 wt% stearic acid. The PCMs have a melting temperature range of 50.0°C to 61.20°C and a latent heat range of 162.0 J/g to 204.5 J/g. The inlet temperature and the mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF) were selected as experimental parameters to test the thermal energy storage performance of the PCMs. The transition times, temperature range, propagation of the solid-liquid interface, as well as heat flow rate characteristics of the employed cylindrical tube storage system were studied at varied experimental parameters. The experimental results show that the melting front moves to inward in the radial directions as well as in the axial directions from the top toward to the bottom of the PCM tube. It was observed that the convection heat transfer in the liquid phase plays an important role in the melting process. The changes in the studied HTF parameters have more effect on the melting processes than the solidification processes of the PCMs. The average heat storage efficiency calculated from data for all the PCMs is 51.5%, meaning that 48.5% of the heat actually was lost somewhere.  相似文献

This paper investigates the phase change behavior of 65 mol% capric acid and 35 mol% lauric acid, calcium chloride hexahydrate, n-octadecane, n-hexadecane, and n-eicosane inside spherical enclosures to identify a suitable heat storage material. Analytical models are developed for solidification and melting of sphere with conduction, natural convection, and heat generation. Both the models are validated with previous experimental studies. Good agreement was found between the analytical predictions and experimental study and the deviations were lesser than 20%. Heat flux release at the wall, cumulative energy release to the external fluid, are revealed for the best PCM. The influence of the size of encapsulation, initial temperature of the PCM, the external fluid temperature on solidified and molten mass fraction, and the total phase change time are also investigated.  相似文献

The charge/discharge rate of a spherical phase change material (PCM) capsule was assessed in consideration of phase change phenomenon and the combined effect of thermal radiation and heat convection in the charging/discharging processes. The heat transfer model was developed based on a single PCM capsule. The equivalent heat flux was evaluated by using the thermal resistance method. In consideration of the thermal radiation, the equivalent charge/discharge rate was improved, and the temperature rising of the PCM was actually much faster in the charging/discharging processes. It was indicated that the influence of the thermal radiation became more significant for PCM capsules under a small Re number (constant air velocity) and for high‐grade thermal energy storage. The analytical results showed that the highest heat flux contributed by cold thermal radiation occupied 30% and 62% of that by heat convection for PCM capsules with radius of 10 and 40 mm, respectively. This illustrated the crucial value of thermal radiation on the charge/discharge rate of PCM capsules with a large radius. However, for smaller size PCM capsules, the equivalent heat flux was larger under the same fluid flow velocity, and it decreased more promptly with time, because the heat convection that played the dominant role in charge/discharge processes was sensitively affected by the radius of the PCM capsules. A latent heat thermal energy storage system using a phase change material (PCM) is an efficient way of storing or releasing a large amount of heat during melting or solidification. It has been determined that the shell‐and‐tube type heat exchanger is the most promising device as a latent heat system that requires high efficiency for a minimum volume. In this type of heat exchanger, the PCM fills the annular shell space around the finned tube while the heat transfer fluid flows within the tube. One of the methods used for increasing the rate of energy storage is to increase the heat transfer surface area by employing finned surfaces. In this study, energy storage by phase change around a radially finned tube is investigated numerically and experimentally. The solution of the system consists of the solving governing equations for the heat transfer fluid (HTF), pipe wall and phase change material. Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of several fin parameters (fin spacing and fin diameter) and flow parameter (Re number and inlet temperature of HTF) and compare with experimental results. The effect of each variable on energy storage and amount of solidification are presented graphically. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
