Two strains of new photosynthetic bacteria were isolated from salt meromictic lakes Mogilnoye and Faro. The bacteria are abligate phototrophic anaerobic cultures which utilize H2S as an electron donor by oxidizing it to elementary sulphur and sulphates. Sulphur is liberated outside the cell. The cultures contain bacteriochlorophyll e and carotenoids of the isorenierathene type. Photosynthetic structures are represented by chlorobium-vesicles. According to these properties, the cultures belong to the Chlorobiaceae family. The bacteria have no gas vacuoles. The cells form 10--20 apophyses-prosthecae which is typical of the Prostheocochloris genus. The new strains differ from Prosthecochloris aestuarii by the brown colour of the cell suspension, the composition of pigments, and ecology. They are classed as a new species Prostheocochloris phaeoasteroidea nov. sp. Diagnosis of the new species is presented.  相似文献

A rod-shaped, motile, phototrophic bacterium, strain SiCys, was enriched and isolated from a marine microbial mat, with cysteine as sole substrate. During phototrophic anaerobic growth with cysteine, sulfide was produced as an intermediate, which was subsequently oxidized to sulfate. The molar growth yield with cysteine was 103 g mol-1, in accordance with complete assimilation of electrons from the carbon and the sulfur moiety into cell material. Growth yields with alanine and serine were proportionally lower. Thiosulfate, sulfide, hydrogen, and several organic compounds were used as electron donors in the light, whereas cystine, sulfite, or elemental sulfur did not support phototrophic anaerobic growth. Aerobic growth in the dark was possible with fructose as substrate. Cultures of strain SiCys were yellowish-brown in color and contained bacteriochlorophyll a, spheroidene, spheroidenone, and OH-spheroidene as major photosynthetic pigments. Taking the morphology, photosynthetic pigments, aerobic growth in the dark, and utilization of sulfide for phototrophic growth into account, strain SiCys was assigned to the genus Rhodovulum (formerly Rhodobacter) and tentatively classified as a strain of R. sulfidophilum. In cell-free extracts in the presence of pyridoxal phosphate, cysteine was converted to pyruvate and sulfide, which is characteristic for cysteine desulfhydrase activity (l-cystathionine gamma-lyase, EC 4.4. 1.1).  相似文献

Animal intracellular Proteobacteria of the alpha subclass without plasmids and containing one or more chromosomes are phylogenetically entwined with opportunistic, plant-associated, chemoautotrophic and photosynthetic alpha Proteobacteria possessing one or more chromosomes and plasmids. Local variations in open environments, such as soil, water, manure, gut systems and the external surfaces of plants and animals, may have selected alpha Proteobacteria with extensive metabolic alternatives, broad genetic diversity, and more flexible and larger genomes with ability for horizontal gene flux. On the contrary, the constant and isolated animal cellular milieu selected heterotrophic alpha Proteobacteria with smaller genomes without plasmids and reduced genetic diversity as compared to their plant-associated and phototrophic relatives. The characteristics and genome sizes in the extant species suggest that a second chromosome could have evolved from megaplasmids which acquired housekeeping genes. Consequently, the genomes of the animal cell-associated Proteobacteria evolved through reductions of the larger genomes of chemoautotrophic ancestors and became rich in adenosine and thymidine, as compared to the genomes of their ancestors. Genome organisation and phylogenetic ancestor-descendent relationships between extant bacteria of closely related genera and within the same monophyletic genus and species suggest that some strains have undergone transition from two chromosomes to a single replicon. It is proposed that as long as the essential information is correctly expressed, the presence of one or more chromosomes within the same genus or species is the result of contingency. Genetic drift in clonal bacteria, such as animal cell-associated alpha Proteobacteria, would depend almost exclusively on mutation and internal genetic rearrangement processes. Alternatively, genomic variations in reticulate bacteria, such as many intestinal and plant cell-associated Proteobacteria, will depend not only on these processes, but also on their genetic interactions with other bacterial strains. Common pathogenic domains necessary for the invasion and survival in association with cells have been preserved in the chromosomes of the animal and plant-associated alpha Proteobacteria. These pathogenic domains have been maintained by vertical inherence, extensively ameliorated to match the chromosome G + C content and evolved within chromosomes of alpha Proteobacteria.  相似文献

A retrospective review of the microbiological and clinical data of 17 specimens obtained from axillary hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) over a period of 6 years was undertaken to study the aerobic and anaerobic microbiology of this condition. A total of 42 bacterial isolates (2.5 per specimen) were obtained, 12 aerobic or facultative (0.7 per specimen) and 30 anaerobic or micro-aerophilic (1.8 per specimen). Aerobic and facultative bacteria only were isolated in six (35%) cases, anaerobic bacteria only in seven (41%) and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in four (24%). The predominant aerobic bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus (six isolates), Streptococcus pyogenes (three) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (two). The most frequently isolated anaerobes were Peptostreptococcus spp. (10), Prevotella spp. (seven), micro-aerophilic streptococci (four), Fusobacterium spp. (three) and Bacteroides spp. sensu stricto (three). This study highlights the polymicrobial nature and predominance of anaerobic bacteria in axillary HS and the need for antimicrobial thereby to reflect this.  相似文献

A culture-independent molecular phylogenetic approach was used to survey constituents of microbial communities associated with an aquifer contaminated with hydrocarbons (mainly jet fuel) and chlorinated solvents undergoing intrinsic bioremediation. Samples were obtained from three redox zones: methanogenic, methanogenic-sulfate reducing, and iron or sulfate reducing. Small-subunit rRNA genes were amplified directly from aquifer material DNA by PCR with universally conserved or Bacteria- or Archaea-specific primers and were cloned. A total of 812 clones were screened by restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP), approximately 50% of which were unique. All RFLP types that occurred more than once in the libraries, as well as many of the unique types, were sequenced. A total of 104 (94 bacterial and 10 archaeal) sequence types were determined. Of the 94 bacterial sequence types, 10 have no phylogenetic association with known taxonomic divisions and are phylogenetically grouped in six novel division level groups (candidate divisions WS1 to WS6); 21 belong to four recently described candidate divisions with no cultivated representatives (OP5, OP8, OP10, and OP11); and 63 are phylogenetically associated with 10 well-recognized divisions. The physiology of two particularly abundant sequence types obtained from the methanogenic zone could be inferred from their phylogenetic association with groups of microorganisms with a consistent phenotype. One of these sequence types is associated with the genus Syntrophus; Syntrophus spp. produce energy from the anaerobic oxidation of organic acids, with the production of acetate and hydrogen. The organism represented by the other sequence type is closely related to Methanosaeta spp., which are known to be capable of energy generation only through aceticlastic methanogenesis. We hypothesize, therefore, that the terminal step of hydrocarbon degradation in the methanogenic zone of the aquifer is aceticlastic methanogenesis and that the microorganisms represented by these two sequence types occur in syntrophic association.  相似文献

Skin disinfection at the site of venipuncture is a critical point in every blood transfusion collection procedure, as it contributes to ensure the bacterial safety of transfusion. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of bacteria present in the antecubital fossae before and after skin disinfection may be one method of assessing the anti-bacterial efficiency of disinfection. Swab culture systems and contact plates are the two techniques usually employed for this purpose. A washing and swabbing technique was used to quantify bacteria before and skin disinfection of the antecubital fossae in blood donors. This contra-placebo study was carried out on 32 donors, each of whom served as his own control, with a random choice of test arm and opposing control arm. Bacterial counts were determined in the antecubital fossae without skin disinfection (control, n = 32) and after a 3 step skin preparation procedure (cleaning, wiping, disinfection) using placebo (distilled water, n = 16) or an antiseptic product (mixture of chlorexidine, benzalkonium chloride and benzylic alcohol, n = 16). The absence of a statistical difference in bacterial counts between the right and left antecubital fossae without disinfection was controlled in a preliminary study of 20 subjects. Mean bacterial counts were 25,000/cm2 and 27,400/cm2 respectively for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria before disinfection, with a wide variation in results between individuals. When using placebo, preparation of the venipuncture site by the 3 step method (cleaning, wiping, disinfection) resulted in a non significant mean reduction of 0.56 log in aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Using the antiseptic product, the same method resulted in a significant mean reduction of 1.8 and 1.7 log respectively in aerobic (p = 0.015) and anaerobic flora (p = 0.005). On an average, 2,750 aerobic bacteria/cm2 and 2,910 anaerobic bacteria/cm2 remained after disinfection, while qualitative analysis showed that disinfection suppressed the transitory flora in all cases but left part of the resident flora in 12/16 cases. These findings are comparable to those of other studies carried out to evaluate this kind of technique for the disinfection of operation sites. In comparison with other techniques classically employed for this type of evaluation (swab systems or contact plates), the method used in this study was the advantage of allowing the quantification of the reduction in bacteria. Hence this method could be employed for comparative assessment of skin disinfection techniques with the aim of improving their anti-bacterial efficiency and could also make possible the definition of a minimum bacterial count (resident flora) to be obtained in all cases after disinfection.  相似文献

All aerobic organisms use the exergonic reduction of molecular oxygen to water as primary source of metabolic energy. This reaction is catalyzed by membrane residing terminal heme/Cu-oxidases which belong to a superfamily of widely varying structural complexity between mitochondrial and bacterial members of this family. Over the last few years, considerable information from this and other laboratories accumulated also on archaeal respiratory chains and their terminal oxidases. In the following, the molecular and catalytic properties of the latter are discussed and compared to those from bacteria and eucarya under the aspect of their energy conserving capabilities and their phylogenetic relations. The Rieske iron-sulfur proteins being important functional constituents of energy transducing respiratory complexes are included in this study. A number of essential conclusions can be drawn. (1) Like bacteria, archaea can also contain split respiratory chains with parallel expression of separate terminal oxidases. (2) The functional core of all oxidases is the highly conserved topological motif of subunit I consisting of at least 12 membrane spanning helices with the 6 histidine residues of the heme/Cu-binding centers in identical locations. (3) Some archaeal oxidases are organized in unusual supercomplexes with other cytochromes and Rieske [2Fe2S] proteins. These complexes are likely to function as proton pumps, whereas on a structural basis several subunit I equivalents alone are postulated to be unable to pump protons. (4) The genes of two archaeal Rieske proteins have been cloned from Sulfolobus; phylogenetically they are forming a separate archaeal branch and suggest the existence of an evolutionary ancestor preceding the split into the three urkingdoms. (5) Archaeal oxidase complexes may combine features of electron transport systems occurring exclusively as separate respiratory complexes in bacteria and eucarya. (6) As far back as the deepest branches of the phylogentic tree, terminal oxidases reveal a degree of complexity comparable to that found in higher organisms. (7) Sequence analysis suggests a monophyletic origin of terminal oxidases with an early split into two types found in archaea as well as bacteria. This view implies an origin of terminal oxidases prior to oxygenic photosynthesis in contrast to the widely accepted inverse hypothesis.  相似文献

Fucosyltransferases are the enzymes transferring fucose from GDP-Fuc to Gal in an alpha1,2-linkage and to GlcNAc in alpha1,3-, alpha1,4-, or alpha1,6-linkages. Since all fucosyltransferases utilize the same nucleotide sugar, their specificity will probably reside in the recognition of the acceptor and in the type of linkage formed. A search of nucleotide and protein databases yielded more than 30 sequences of fucosyltransferases originating from mammals, chicken, nematode, and bacteria. On the basis of protein sequence similarities, these enzymes can be classified into four distinct families: (1) the alpha-2-fucosyltransferases, (2) the alpha-3-fucosyltransferases, (3) the mammalian alpha-6-fucosyltransferases, and (4) the bacterial alpha-6-fucosyltransferases. Nevertheless, using the sensitive hydrophobic cluster analysis (HCA) method, conserved structural features as well as a consensus peptide motif have been clearly identified in the catalytic domains of all alpha-2 and alpha-6-fucosyltranferases, from prokaryotic and eukaryotic origin, that allowed the grouping of these enzymes into one superfamily. In addition, a few amino acids were found strictly conserved in this family, and two of these residues have been reported to be essential for enzyme activity for a human alpha-2-fucosyltransferase. The alpha-3-fucosyltransferases constitute a distinct family as they lack the consensus peptide, but some regions display similarities with the alpha-2 and alpha-6-fucosyltranferases. All these observations strongly suggest that the fucosyltransferases share some common structural and catalytic features.  相似文献

The microbiology of needle aspirates from 40 inflamed cervical lymph glands was studied for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, fungi and mycobacteria. Forty-two bacterial, 11 mycobacterial and six fungal isolates were isolated. Aerobic bacteria only were recovered in 11 (27.5%), anaerobes alone in five (12.5%) and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in seven (17.5%). Mycobacterium sp. were recovered in 11 (27.5%) and fungi in six (15%). The recovery of anaerobes was associated with dental infection. Eighteen aerobic bacteria were isolated and the predominant ones were Staphylococcus aureus (eight isolates) and group A streptococci (four). Twenty-four anaerobic bacteria were recovered and the predominant ones were: Prevotella sp. (six), Peptostreptococcus sp. (five), Propionibacterium acnes (four) and Fusobacterium sp. (three). These findings demonstrate the role of anaerobic organisms in cervical lymphadenitis and the need to culture aspirated material from the glands for both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.  相似文献

A DNA sequence has been obtained for a 35.6-kb genomic segment from Heliobacillus mobilis that contains a major cluster of photosynthesis genes. A total of 30 ORFs were identified, 20 of which encode enzymes for bacteriochlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthesis, reaction-center (RC) apoprotein, and cytochromes for cyclic electron transport. Donor side electron-transfer components to the RC include a putative RC-associated cytochrome c553 and a unique four-large-subunit cytochrome bc complex consisting of Rieske Fe-S protein (encoded by petC), cytochrome b6 (petB), subunit IV (petD), and a diheme cytochrome c (petX). Phylogenetic analysis of various photosynthesis gene products indicates a consistent grouping of oxygenic lineages that are distinct and descendent from anoxygenic lineages. In addition, H. mobilis was placed as the closest relative to cyanobacteria, which form a monophyletic origin to chloroplast-based photosynthetic lineages. The consensus of the photosynthesis gene trees also indicates that purple bacteria are the earliest emerging photosynthetic lineage. Our analysis also indicates that an ancient gene-duplication event giving rise to the paralogous bchI and bchD genes predates the divergence of all photosynthetic groups. In addition, our analysis of gene duplication of the photosystem I and photosystem II core polypeptides supports a "heterologous fusion model" for the origin and evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis.  相似文献

A diesel fuel-contaminated aquifer was bioremediated in situ by the injection of oxidants (O2 and NO3-) and nutrients in order to stimulate microbial activity. After 3.5 years of remediation, an aquifer sample was excavated and the material was used (i) to isolate bacterial strains able to grow on selected hydrocarbons under denitrifying conditions and (ii) to construct a laboratory aquifer column in order to simulate the aerobic and denitrifying remediation processes. Five bacterial strains isolated from the aquifer sample were able to grow on toluene (strains T2 to T4, T6, and T10), and nine bacterial strains grew on toluene and m-xylene (strains M3 to M7 and M9 to M12). Strains T2 to T4, T6, and T10 were cocci, and strains M3 to M7 and M9 to M12 were rods. The morphological and physiological differences were also reflected in small sequence variabilities in domain III of the 23S rRNA and in the 16S rRNA. Comparative sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA of one isolate (T3 and M3) of each group revealed a close phylogenetic relationship for both groups of isolates to organisms of the genus Azoarcus. Two 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes (Azo644 and Azo1251) targeting the experimental isolates, bacteria of the Azoarcus tolulyticus group, and Azoarcus evansii were used to investigate the significance of hydrocarbon-degrading Azoarcus spp. in the laboratory aquifer column. The number of bacteria in the column determined after DAPI (4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining was 5.8 x 10(8) to 1.1 x 10(9) cells g of aquifer material-1. About 1% (in the anaerobic zone of the column) to 2% (in the aerobic zone of the column) of these bacteria were detectable by using a combination of probes Azo644 and Azo1251, demonstrating that hydrocarbon-degrading Azoarcus spp. are significant members of the indigenous microbiota. More than 90% of the total number of bacteria were detectable by using probes targeting higher phylogenetic groups. Approximately 80% of these bacteria belonged to the beta subdivision of the class Proteobacteria (beta-Proteobacteria), and 10 to 16% belonged to the gamma-Proteobacteria. Bacteria of the alpha-Proteobacteria were present in high numbers (10%) only in the aerobic zone of the column.  相似文献

Specimens from 209 cutaneous abscesses in children were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Of these, nine (4%) were sterile and 51 (24%) yielded pure cultures that were predominantly Staphylococcus aureus. The rest of the abscesses yielded growth of two or more aerobic and/or anaerobic organisms. The data were organized according to these anatomic locations: head, neck, trunk, finger, nailbed, hand, leg, buttocks, perirectal, and vulvovaginal areas. Aerobic bacteria only were present in 92 specimens (46%), anaerobes only were isolated in 52 (26%), and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were present in 56 abscesses (28%). A total of 467 isolates (270 anaerobes and 197 aerobes) were recovered, accounting for 2.3 isolates per specimen (1.3 anaerobes and 1.0 aerobes). The presence of more than one anaerobe per abscess was obtained from the vulvo-vaginal, buttocks, perirectal, finger, nailbed, and head areas. Aerobes were more prevalent in the neck, hand, leg, and trunk areas. The predominant aerobes recovered were: S aureus (89 isolates), alpha- and nonhemolytic streptococci (29), group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (16), Enterobacter (10), and Escherichia coli (8). The predominant anaerobes recovered were anaerobic Gram-positive cocci (79 isolates), Bacteroides sp (116, including 31 B melaninogenicus group and 29 B fragilis group), and Fusobacterium sp (39). Our findings indicate the polymicrobial nature and predominance of anaerobes in cutaneous abscesses in children in perirectal, head, finger, and nailbed areas.  相似文献

Occurrence of the hsp70 (dnaK) gene was investigated in various members of the domain Archaea comprising both euryarchaeotes and crenarchaeotes and in the hyperthermophilic bacteria Aquifex pyrophilus and Thermotoga maritima representing the deepest offshoots in phylogenetic trees of bacterial 16S rRNA sequences. The gene was not detected in 8 of 10 archaea examined but was found in A. pyrophilus and T. maritima, from which it was cloned and sequenced. Comparative analyses of the HSP70 amino acid sequences encoded in these genes, and others in the databases, showed that (i) in accordance with the vicinities seen in rRNA-based trees, the proteins from A. pyrophilus and T. maritima form a thermophilic cluster with that from the green nonsulfur bacterium Thermomicrobium roseum and are unrelated to their counterparts from gram-positive bacteria, proteobacteria/mitochondria, chlamydiae/spirochetes, deinococci, and cyanobacteria/chloroplasts; (ii) the T. maritima HSP70 clusters with the homologues from the archaea Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum and Thermoplasma acidophilum, in contrast to the postulated unique kinship between archaea and gram-positive bacteria; and (iii) there are exceptions to the reported association between an insert in HSP70 and gram negativity, or vice versa, absence of insert and gram positivity. Notably, the HSP70 from T. maritima lacks the insert, although T. maritima is phylogenetically unrelated to the gram-positive bacteria. These results, along with the absence of hsp70 (dnaK) in various archaea and its presence in others, suggest that (i) different taxa retained either one or the other of two hsp70 (dnaK) versions (with or without insert), regardless of phylogenetic position; and (ii) archaea are aboriginally devoid of hsp70 (dnaK), and those that have it must have received it from phylogenetically diverse bacteria via lateral gene transfer events that did not involve replacement of an endogenous hsp70 (dnaK) gene.  相似文献

The microbiology and clinical features of empyema were studied retrospectively in 197 patients whose specimens yielded bacterial growth after inoculation for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Three hundred forty-three organisms (216 aerobic or facultative and 127 anaerobic organisms) were isolated. Aerobic bacteria were isolated in 127 (64 percent) patients, anaerobic bacteria in 25 (13 percent), and mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in 45 (23 percent). The predominant aerobic or facultative organisms were Streptococcus pneumoniae (70 isolates), Staphylococcus aureus (58), Escherichia coli (17), Klebsiella pneumoniae (16), and Haemophilus influenzae (12). The predominant anaerobes were pigmented Prevotella and Porphyromonas species (24), Bacteroides fragilis group (22), anaerobic cocci (36), and Fusobacterium species (20). beta-Lactamase-producing organisms were recovered in 49 (38 percent) of 128 tested specimens. These included all 42 tested S aureus and 15 B fragilis group, 4 of 9 K pneumoniae, 3 of 9 H influenzae, 3 of 8 pigmented Prevotella and Porphyromonas species, and 2 of 6 E coli. Most patients from whom S pneumoniae and H influenzae were recovered had pneumonia, and most patients with S aureus had pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia, and lung abscesses. The recovery of anaerobic bacteria was mostly associated with the concomitant diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia, and lung, subdiaphragmatic, dental, and oropharyngeal abscesses. These data highlight the importance of anaerobic bacteria in selected cases of empyema.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of obligate anaerobic bacteria in bacterial infections in dogs and cats and susceptibility to selected antimicrobial agents. DESIGN: Case series. SAMPLE POPULATION: Specimens from 1,267 dogs and 243 cats. PROCEDURE: Standard anaerobic and aerobic bacterial culture methods were used. Anaerobic isolates were tested for susceptibility to selected antimicrobial agents. RESULTS: Obligate anaerobic bacteria were isolated from 199 (15.7%) and 69 (28.4%) specimens obtained from dogs and cats, respectively. More than half of the specimens that contained obligate anaerobic bacteria were from draining tracts (exclusively dogs), pleural fluid, abscesses, bones, the respiratory tract, or the abdominal cavity. The most commonly isolated obligate anaerobic bacteria (approx 70% of all isolates) were Bacteroides spp, Peptostreptococcus spp, Fusobacterium spp, and Porphyromonas spp. Eighty percent of the specimens that contained obligate anaerobic bacteria also contained facultative anaerobic or aerobic organisms. The organisms most commonly isolated in association with obligate anaerobic bacteria were members of the family Enterobacteriaceae (Escherichia coli was the most common), Pasteurella spp, and Staphylococcus intermedius. Ninety-seven obligate anaerobic isolates were tested for susceptibility to ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, and metronidazole. All were susceptible to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and chloramphenicol, and most were susceptible to metronidazole. Only 71% of the Bacteroides isolates were susceptible to ampicillin, and only 83% were susceptible to clindamycin. Only 80% of the Clostridium isolates were susceptible to clindamycin, but all were susceptible to ampicillin. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Data on sites and conditions from which anaerobic bacteria are commonly isolated, along with results of susceptibility testing, may be useful in designing antimicrobial treatment regimens.  相似文献

Ten human volunteers completed a 4-month diet series consisting of 1 month each of a control diet, a meatless diet, a high-beef diet, and the same control diet. Fat and fiber contents were essentially the same in all four diets, but protein content was doubled during the high-beef diet. During the 4th week on each diet, three stool specimens collected from each volunteer were analyzed for chemical composition and content of facultative, aerobic, and anaerobic bacteria. The bacteriological data are presented in this paper. High beef protein consumption had little effect on the composition of the intestinal flora. There were no significant differences in total counts of facultative and aerobic or anaerobic organisms in the feces when volunteers were on meatless or high-beef diets. At the species level, when counts during the two control diets were comparable, in only three instances did the change from the meatless to a high-beef diet significantly influence the bacterial numbers. The ratio of mean counts of anaerobic to facultative and aerobic organisms was approximately 15:1 during the meatless diet and 34:1 during the high-meat diet. Dispersal of non-sporeforming anaerobic bacteria was studied. Skin samples were taken from the subjects, and dispersed from different parts of the body was examined. The number of anaerobic bacteria dispersed was not correlated to their density on the surface of skin area exposed. The highest density of anaerobic bacteria on the skin was found in the face and upper trunk, but the highest yield of anaerobic bacteria dispersed came from the lower trunk. The dominant anaerobic bacteria dispersed were Propionibacterium acnes, but Propionibacterium avidum, Propionibacterium granulosum and Gram-positive cocci were also isolated from the dispersal samples. Peptococcus magnus was the most common coccus isolated. For the less frequently isolated bacteria, the best correlation was found between the perineal flora and airborne bacteria. A comparison was also made of bacterial dispersal by naked and dressed subjects. The dispersal of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria was higher when the subjects were dressed in conventional operating theatre cotton clothing than when they were naked. The increased dispersal of anaerobic bacteria when the subjects were dressed was mainly due to increased dispersal of Propionibacterium sp.  相似文献

The research concerned the antagonistic activity of oral and pharyngeal bacterial flora in 44 children, of both sexes, aged 4-15. These properties were estimated basing upon in vitro inhibition of the growth of the standard indicator strains Staphylococcus aureus 209P and Escherichia coli K-12. Bacteria, both aerobic as well as anaerobic, inhibiting the growth of S. aureus 209P were found in every sample. The median percentages of bacteria showing these properties were not significantly different in both environments and they ranged from 25% to 33%. The antagonistic activity of oral and pharyngeal bacterial flora against the indicator strain E. coli K-12 was significantly lower when compared with the activity against the staphylococcal strain.  相似文献

New obligately anaerobic bacteria are being discovered at an accelerating rate and it is becoming very evident that the diversity of anoxic biotransformations has been greatly underestimated. Furthermore, among contemporary anaerobes there are many that thrive in extreme environments including, for example, an impressive array of both archaebacterial and eubacterial hyperthermophiles. Free energy for growth and reproduction may be conserved not only via fermentations but also by anoxygenic photophosphorylation and other modes of creating transmembrane proton potential. Thus forms of anaerobic respiration in which various inorganic oxidants (or indeed carbon dioxide) serve as terminal electron acceptors have greatly extended the natural habitats in which such organisms may predominate. Anaerobic bacteria are, however, often found in nature as members of close microbial communities (consortia) that, although sustained by syntrophic and other relations between component species, are liable to alter their composition and character in response to environmental changes, e.g., availability of terminal oxidants. It follows that the biotechnological exploitation of obligately anaerobic bacteria must be informed by knowledge both of their biochemical capacities and of their normal environmental roles. It is against this background that illustrative examples of the activities of anaerobic bacteria are considered under three heads: 1. Biodegradation/Bioremediation, with special reference to the anaerobic breakdown of aromatic and/or halogenated organic substances; 2. Biosynthesis/Bioproduction, encompassing normal and modified fermentations; and 3. Biotransformations, accomplished by whole or semipermeabilized organisms or by enzymes derived therefrom, with particular interest attaching to the production of chiral compounds by a number of procedures, including electromicrobial reduction.  相似文献
