This paper presents finite element analyses (FEA) on the transverse impact responses of 3-D circular braided composite tubes with the braiding angles of 15°, 30° and 45°. A finite element model of the braided composite tube was established at microstructure level to analyze the transverse impact behaviors. From the FEA results, the impact damage, deformation and stress distribution were obtained to analyze the damage mechanism. Stress propagation in lower braiding angle tubes was faster than that of the higher braiding angle. The impact responses of the braided composite tubes were also tested to obtain load–displacement curves and energy absorption for the comparisons with the FEA results. The impact damage and fracture morphology obtained from the FEA were in good agreement with the experimental results, which demonstrated the feasibility of the FEA model for the design of the braided tube.  相似文献

Knitted composites have higher failure deformation and energy absorption capacity under impact than other textile structural composites because of the yarn loop structures in knitted performs. Here we report the transverse impact behavior of a new kind of 3-D multi-structured knitted composite both in experimental and finite element simulation. The knitted composite is composed of two knitted fabrics: biaxial warp knitted fabric and interlock knitted fabric. The transverse impact behaviors of the 3-D knitted composite were tested with a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. The load–displacement curves and damage morphologies were obtained to analyze the energy absorptions and impact damage mechanisms of the composite under different impact velocities. A unit-cell model based on the microstructure of the 3-D knitted composite was established to determine the composite deformation and damage when the composite impacted by a hemisphere-ended steel rod. Incorporated with the unit-cell model, a elasto-plastic constitute equation of the 3-D knitted composite and the critical damage area (CDA) failure theory of composites have been implemented as a vectorized user defined material law (VUMAT) for ABAQUS/Explicit. The load–displacement curves, impact deformations and damages obtained from FEM are compared with those in experimental. The good agreements of the comparisons prove the validity of the unit-cell model and user-defined subroutine VUMAT. This manifests the applicability of the VUMAT to characterization and design of the 3-D multi-structured knitted composite structures under other impulsive loading conditions.  相似文献

A hyperelastic constitutive model is implemented to study the formability on three-dimensional complex shapes of a single layer E-glass non-crimp 3D orthogonal woven reinforcement. Experimental measurements of the main deformation modes have been used to identify the strain energy density function of the constitutive model. The comparison of the finite element simulations and experimental results of tetrahedron and double-dome shaping processes demonstrated the adequacy of the adopted hyperelastic model to describe the deformation mechanisms involved during draping and the efficiency to predict the global behaviour of the non-crimp 3D woven reinforcement during complex shape forming.  相似文献

The flexural response of 3D woven textile composite panels containing an edge crack is evaluated using the End Notch Flexure (ENF) test. In doing so, the effectiveness of 3D reinforcement in increasing and/or eliminating delamination is demonstrated. A finite element model of the ENF configuration using the Discrete Cohesive Zone Model (DCZM) was used to evaluate the deformation response and fracture properties corresponding to the experimental results presented in Pankow et al. (2011) [1]. A modified trapezoidal traction law was used in the DCZM to computationally evaluate the ENF test results. Good agreement between experimental results and predictions are reported, up to the point at which the crack reaches under the loading roller and damage begins to occur locally under the roller.  相似文献

This paper presents a material model suitable for simulating the behavior of dry fabrics subjected to ballistic impact. The developed material model is implemented in a commercial explicit finite element (FE) software LS-DYNA through a user defined material subroutine (UMAT). The constitutive model is developed using data from uniaxial quasi-static and high strain rate tension tests, picture frame tests and friction tests. Different finite element modeling schemes using shell finite elements are used to study efficiency and accuracy issues. First, single FE layer (SL) and multiple FE layers (ML) were used to simulate the ballistic tests conducted at NASA Glenn Research Center (NASA-GRC). Second, in the multiple layer configuration, a new modeling approach called Spiral Modeling Scheme (SMS) was tried and compared to the existing Concentric Modeling Scheme (CMS). Regression analyses were used to fill missing experimental data – the shear properties of the fabric, damping coefficient and the parameters used in Cowper-Symonds (CS) model which account for strain rate effect on material properties, in order to achieve close match between FE simulations and experimental data. The difference in absorbed energy by the fabric after impact, displacement of fabric near point of impact, and extent of damage were used as metrics for evaluating the material model. In addition, the ballistic limits of the multi-layer fabrics for various configurations were also determined.  相似文献

Late-stage fatigue damage of an E-glass/epoxy 3D orthogonal non-crimp textile composite loaded in the warp direction has been investigated using a combination of mechanical testing, X-ray micro computed tomography (μCT), optical microscopy and finite element modelling. Stiffness reduction and energy dissipated per cycle were found to be complementary measurements of damage accumulation, occurring in three stages: a first stage characterised by rapid changes, a more quiescent second stage, followed by a third stage where the (decreasing) stiffness and (increasing) energy dissipation change irregularly and then rapidly, to failure. Microscopy of specimens cycled into the transition between the second and third stages showed macroscopic accumulations of fibre fractures in sections of warp tows which lying adjacent to the surface weft tows which are crowned-over by the Z-tows. At these locations, the warp tow fibres are subjected to stress concentrations both from transverse weft tow matrix cracks and resin pocket cracks.  相似文献

A finite element (FE) model using coupling continuum shell elements and cohesive elements is proposed to simulate the compression after impact (CAI) behaviour and predict the CAI strength of stitched composites. Continuum shell elements with Hashin failure criterion exhibit the composite laminate damage behaviour; whilst cohesive elements using traction-separation law characterise the laminate interfaces. Impact-induced delamination is explicitly modelled by reducing material properties of damaged cohesive elements. Computational results have demonstrated the trend of increasing CAI strength with decreasing impact-induced delamination area. Spring elements are introduced into the model to represent through-thickness stitch thread in the composite laminates. Results in this study validate experimental finding that CAI strength is improved when stitching is incorporated into the composite structure. The proposed FE model reveals good CAI strength predictions and indicates good agreement with experimental results, making it a valuable tool for CAI strength prediction of stitched composites.  相似文献

Concrete is a composite material composed of water, sand, coarse granular material called aggregate and cement that fills the space among the aggregate particles and glues them together. Conventional building structures are made up of steel skeleton with concrete impregnation. These are very heavy weight structures with steel vulnerable to corrosion. The conventional concrete structures tend to undergo large deformations in the event of a strong earthquake. Mechanical simulation of various textile structural concretes is carried out successfully for their ductility behaviour. 3D woven reinforced concretes display superior ductile character showing ray of hope to develop seismic resistant building. Simulation of three 3D woven fabrics and their composites was carried to predict ductility and strengths of fabric reinforced concrete structures. Maximum deformation was observed for beam reinforced with orthogonal interlock fabric under the same load and minimum deformation was observed for plain concrete. Maximum equivalent stress was observed to be highest for plain concrete followed by beam reinforced with angle interlock fabric followed by orthogonal fabric and warp interlock fabric under similar loading conditions. From the results it was clear that 3D fabric reinforced structures are more ductile than the traditional steel reinforced structures. Hence 3D fabric reinforced concrete structures are much better in strength and ductility as compared to conventional construction materials. Among the three 3D fabric, orthogonal fabric reinforced composites are most ductile and are also less stiff. They can deform more than the other two fabric composites. Hence, orthogonal fabric reinforced composites can undergo higher deformations without collapsing. These composites can be more elastic under earthquake shaking.  相似文献

The impact behavior of warp-knitted spacer fabrics (WKSFs) impregnated with shear thickening fluid (STF) under low-velocity impact loadings have been investigated from experimental and finite element analyses (FEA) approaches. From the experimental approach, the impact load–displacement curves have been obtained. It was observed that the WKSF impregnated with the STF composite material (the WKSF/STF composite) shows a higher stiffness and lower peak force than those of the WKSF under the same impact loadings. In FEA approach, the geometrical models of the WKSF and the WKSF/STF composite material were established based on the WKSF fabric architectures. The dynamic responses including the impact load–displacement curves and impact deformation of the samples were predicted based on finite element analyses at the microstructure level. It was found that the STF and the coupling effect between the STF fluid and fiber tows are the key factors which influence the cushioning behaviors of the composite. The energy absorption mechanisms include the buckling of the spacer finer tows and the thickening effect of the STF under impact loading. The WKSF/STF composite could be expected as a damping or energy-absorptive materials under impact loading.  相似文献

The probabilistic impact response of flexible woven fabrics can be described through the V0V100 or probabilistic velocity response (PVR) curve which describes the probability of fabric penetration as a function of projectile impact velocity. One source of variability that affects the probabilistic nature of fabric impact performance is the statistical distribution of yarn tensile strengths. In this paper the effects of the statistical yarn strength distribution characteristics on the probabilistic fabric impact response are computationally studied using five different strength distributions with differing mean strengths and distribution widths. Corresponding fabric PVR curves are generated for each strength distribution using a probabilistic computational framework that involves randomly mapping yarn strengths onto the individual woven yarns of a fabric finite element model and then running a series of impact simulations for the case of a four-sided clamped fabric impacted at the center by a spherical projectile.  相似文献

A multi-scale approach to modelling is optimal for computationally intensive problems of a hierarchical nature such as 3D woven composites. In this paper an approach capable of modelling feature/component scale fabric deformations and defects is proposed. The proposed technique starts with a meso-scale model for predicting the as-woven geometry of a single unit cell using a high fidelity digital element method. The unit cell geometry is then converted into a macro-scale fabric model by geometric reduction then tessellation. On the macro-scale, two and three dimensional approaches to yarn geometry representation are proposed, with an accompanying yarn mechanical model. Each approach is evaluated based on solution accuracy and computational efficiency. The proposed approach is then verified against experimental results on the meso- and macro-scales. The applicability of this modelling technique to larger scale compaction problems is then investigated. The proposed algorithm was found to be accurate and computationally efficient.  相似文献

In this paper, low-velocity impact response and damage of composite laminates under in-plane loads are analytically and experimentally investigated. The authors recently proposed a modified displacement field of plate theory, considering the effect of initially loaded in-plane strain, and used a finite element program to analyze the structural behavior of the composite laminate. In this study, the program is upgraded to account for the structural damping effect of the laminate. A pendulum type impact test system and an in-plane loading fixture are constructed for the experimental study. The analytical and experimental impact behaviors are compared at different impact energy levels for cases with an initial in-plane tensile load and a compressive load, as well as cases without the initial in-plane load. The results show good correspondence between the analytical and experimental impact force histories. The effect of the initial in-plane load reduces for higher impact energies. The numerical estimation of the damaged area is in good agreement with the results from C-scanning experiments.  相似文献

This paper reports the high-strain rate properties of 3-D braided basalt/epoxy composite materials at 26 °C, −50 °C, −100 °C and −140 °C with strain-rate range from 1300 s−1 to 2100 s−1 by experimental study. A simple and effective cryogenic device was applied to the SHPB system to create the low-temperature field of the samples. It was found that the compression modulus, peak stress, failure strain and specific energy absorption of the 3-D braided basalt/epoxy composite materials had different sensitivity to temperatures and strain rates. In the out-of-plane impact, there were two failure modes, namely, compression-failure mode and shear-failure mode. Fracture of fiber tows was irregular with abundant pull-out of fiber and much finely-divided fragmentation of resin among fibers at room temperature. In cryogenic field, the fracture of fiber tows was neat and tidy with few pull-out of fiber and few finely-divided fragmentation of resin. However, in the in-plane impact, there was only compression failure mode. And there was no fracture of fiber tows and no big difference among samples tested under different gas pressures. Because of the function of squeezing and buckling, split-off separation of the composite could be blocked by the tangled fiber tows. As a whole, the reinforcement could still keep its structural integrity.  相似文献

Low-velocity impact damage can drastically reduce the residual strength of a composite structure even when the damage is barely visible. The ability to computationally predict the extent of damage and compression-after-impact (CAI) strength of a composite structure can potentially lead to the exploration of a larger design space without incurring significant time and cost penalties. A high-fidelity three-dimensional composite damage model, to predict both low-velocity impact damage and CAI strength of composite laminates, has been developed and implemented as a user material subroutine in the commercial finite element package, ABAQUS/Explicit. The intralaminar damage model component accounts for physically-based tensile and compressive failure mechanisms, of the fibres and matrix, when subjected to a three-dimensional stress state. Cohesive behaviour was employed to model the interlaminar failure between plies with a bi-linear traction–separation law for capturing damage onset and subsequent damage evolution. The virtual tests, set up in ABAQUS/Explicit, were executed in three steps, one to capture the impact damage, the second to stabilize the specimen by imposing new boundary conditions required for compression testing, and the third to predict the CAI strength. The observed intralaminar damage features, delamination damage area as well as residual strength are discussed. It is shown that the predicted results for impact damage and CAI strength correlated well with experimental testing without the need of model calibration which is often required with other damage models.  相似文献

This paper presents the development of a highly efficient user-defined finite element for modelling the bolt-load distribution in large-scale composite structures. The method is a combined analytical/numerical approach and is capable of representing the full non-linear load-displacement behaviour of bolted composite joints both up to, and including, joint failure. In the elastic range, the method is generic and is a numerical extension of a closed-form method capable of modelling the load distribution in single-column joints. A semi-empirical approach is used to model failure initiation and energy absorption in the joint and this has been successfully applied in models of single-bolt, single-lap joints. In terms of large-scale applications, the method is validated against an experimental study of complex load distributions in multi-row, multi-column joints. The method is robust, accurate and highly efficient, thus demonstrating its potential as a time/cost saving design tool for the aerospace industry and indeed other industries utilising bolted composite structures.  相似文献

This work aims at developing a hot sizing process on composite materials to correct the profiles of composite structures during manufacture. Hot sizing experiments were carried out at 150 °C with different sizing loads and hot sizing periods for L-shaped composite beams made of carbon fiber plain-weave fabric and epoxy resin. To predict the springback in hot sizing process, a corresponding finite element simulation method was developed using stress relaxation equations determined at the same temperature. Excellent agreements between the predicted and observed results were obtained. The effects of the component thickness and 45° ply percentage on the springback rate were investigated by simulation. Springback rate in hot sizing process on composite materials ranges from 60% to 95%. In conclusion hot sizing process is proved to be a valid method for compensation for the process-induced deformation (PID) of L-shaped composite beams.  相似文献

In the present study, effect of hybridization on the hybrid composite armors under ballistic impact is investigated using hydrocode simulations. The hybrid composite armor is constructed using various combinations and stacking sequences of fiber reinforced composites having woven form of fibers specifically high specific-modulus/high specific-strength Kevlar fiber (KF), tough, high strain-to-failure fiber Glass fiber (GF) and high strength/high stiffness Carbon fiber (CF). Different combinations of composite armors studied are KF layer in GF laminate, GF layer in KF laminate, KF layer in CF laminate and CF layer in KF laminate at various positions of hybridized layers for a fixed thickness of the target. In this article the results obtained from the finite element model are validated for the case of KF layer in a GF laminate with experimental predictions reported in the literature in terms of energy absorption and residual velocity and good agreement is observed. Further, the effect of stacking sequence, projectile geometry and target thickness on the ballistic limit velocity, energy absorbed by the target and the residual velocity are presented for different combinations of hybrid composite armors. The simulations show that, at a fixed thickness of the hybrid composite armor, stacking sequence of hybridized layer shows significant effect on the ballistic performance. The results also indicate energy absorption and ballistic limit velocity are sensitive to projectile geometry. Specifically, it is found that arranging the KF layer at the rear side, GF layer in the exterior and CF layer on the front side offers good ballistic impact resistance. The hybrid composite armor consisting of a CF layer in KF laminate acquires maximum impact resistance and is the best choice for the design compared to that of other combinations studied.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of z-pinned composite laminates were examined numerically. Finite element calculations have been performed to understand how the through-thickness reinforcement modifies the engineering elastic constants and local stress distributions. Solutions were found for four basic laminate stacking sequences, all having two percent volume fraction of z-fibres. For the stiffness analysis, a micro-mechanical finite element model was employed that was based on the actual geometric configuration of a z-pinned composite unit cell. The numerical results agreed very well with some published solutions. It showed that by adding 2% volume fraction of z-fibres, the through-thickness Young's modulus was increased by 22–35%. The reductions in the in-plane moduli were contained within 7–10%. The stress analysis showed that interlaminar stress distributions near a laminate free edge were significantly affected when z-fibres were placed within a characteristic distance of one z-fibre diameter from the free edge. Local z-fibres carried significant amount of interlaminar normal and shear stresses.  相似文献

A qualitative analysis of experimental results from small caliber ballistic impact and dynamic indentation on a 3D glass fiber reinforced composite are presented. Microscopic analysis of the damaged specimens revealed that the current 3D weaving scheme creates inherently two weak planes which act as potential sites for delamination in the above experiments. It is concluded that while the z-yarns may be effective in limiting the delamination damage at low loads and at low rates of impact, at high loads and high loading rates delamination continues to be the dominant failure mode in 3D woven composites. It is shown that dynamic indentation can be used to capture the progression of damage during impact of 3D woven composites.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed finite element (FE) analysis aiming to investigate numerically the impact deformation of multi-ply fabric panels with angled plies. The purpose of the investigation described in this paper is to study numerically the way in which the multi-ply panels deform and to identify the energy absorption in different panel constructions. The FE model was created using ABAQUS to simulate the transverse impact of a projectile onto various woven fabric panels. Influencing factors such as the impact velocity, panel construction and the number of plies are taken into account in the FE simulations. The numerical predictions show that the orientation of plies significantly affects the energy-absorbing capacity of the multi-ply fabric panels. The angled panels always increase the energy-absorbing capacity, compared with the aligned panel, by as much as 20%, depending on the number of plies in the panel. In addition, the stacking sequence of oriented plies also plays an important role in absorbing the energy. For the multi-ply fabric panel with large numbers of plies, there is an optimised sequence of plies which can maximise the energy-absorbing capacity of the panel. An important aspect of the work is validation of the numerical technique. It is shown that the FE predictions are highly consistent with the experimental study [1].  相似文献
