Mg–Al–Fe ternary layered double hydroxides (LDH) were synthesized based on bayer red mud by calcination‐rehydration method, and characterized using X‐ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The synergistic flame retardant effects of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with LDH in ethylene‐vinyl acetate (EVA) composites were studied using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), and smoke density test (SDT). The thermal degradation behavior of EVA/LDH/APP composites was examined by thermal gravimetric analysis‐fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG‐FTIR). The results showed that LOI values decreased by incorporation of APP together with LDH; and, a suitable amount of APP in EVA/LDH composites can apparently improve UL 94 rating. The CCT results indicated that heat release rate (HRR) of the EVA/LDH/APP composites with APP decreased in comparison with that of the EVA/LDH composites. The SDT results showed that APP was helpful to suppress smoke. The TG‐FTIR data showed that the composites with APP had a higher thermal stability than the EVA/LDH composites at high temperature. Abstract

The synergistic effects of Fe organic modified montmorillonite (Fe-OMMT) with layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer/LDH (EVA/LDH) composites have been studied using thermal analysis [thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)], limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results showed that the addition of a given amount of Fe-OMMT apparently increased the LOI value and the rating in the UL-94 test. The results from the LOI and UL-94 tests show that Fe-OMMT can act as flame retardant synergistic agents in EVA/LDH composites. The CCT data indicated that the addition of Fe-OMMT in the EVA/LDH system can greatly reduce the heat release rate. The TGA data show that Fe-OMMT, as an excellent flame retardant synergist of LDH, cannot increase the thermal degradation temperature and the charred residues.  相似文献

Through the simple precipitation of palygorskite (PGS) by zinc borate (ZB) (to make PGS@ZB) and the decoration of PGS@ZB by dodecylamine (N), a novel organic‐inorganic@inorganic hybrid flame retardant of PGS@ZB‐N was prepared and was incorporated with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) to improve its flame retardance. The structure and morphology of PGS@ZB‐N were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and it was confirmed that the PGS@ZB‐N hybrid had been successfully prepared. The flame retardancy and burning behavior of EVA/PGS@ZB‐N/EG (EG = expandable graphite) composite were studied through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 (by the vertical burning test), and cone calorimeter test (CCT) characterizations. The prepared EVA/PGS@ZB‐N/EG composite obtained an LOI value of 41.2% with the addition of 30 wt% PGS@ZB‐N/EG. It was found that EVA/PGS@ZB‐N/EG was protected through a gas phase and condensed phase alternating synergistic effect mechanism.  相似文献

In this study, the flammability characterization and synergistic effects of different particle size of expandable graphite (EG) with modified magnesium hydroxide (MH) in flame‐retardant polypropylene (PP) composites were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that the particle size of EG had a great effect on the flammability of the PP/MH/EG composites. The EG2 with smaller particle size could apparently increase the LOI value and improved the UL‐94 flammability properties rating of the PP composites. The data obtained from the TGA and FTIR curves indicated that the thermo‐oxidative stability of PP/MH/EG composites increased with decreasing particle size of EG. And the smaller the particle size of EG, the higher the residues of the composite. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 47:1756–1760, 2007. © 2007 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

In this article, high‐density polyethylene/ethylene vinyl‐acetate copolymer (HDPE/EVA) composites filled with two different particle sizes (45 and 150 µm) of expandable graphite (EG) were prepared by using a twin‐screw extruder. The thermal stability, flammability, and mechanical properties of HDPE/EVA/EG composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cone calorimeter test (CCT), tensile test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results from TGA and CCT indicated that EG significantly enhanced the thermal stability and fire resistance of HDPE/EVA blend. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of HDPE/EVA/EG composites were improved with decreasing particle size of EG. Although the onset of weight loss of the flame‐retardant composites occurred at a lower temperature than that of HDPE/EVA blend, the flame‐retardant composites produced a large amount of char residue at a high temperature. The consolidated char layer formed a barrier, which could reduce heat, low‐molecular transfer, and air incursion, and thus enhanced the flame retardancy. The data from the tensile test showed that the addition of EG deteriorated the mechanical properties; however, the tensile stress and strain of HDPE/EVA/EG composites increased with decreasing the particle size of EG owing to the strong interface adhesion between polymer matrix and inorganic particles. The synergistic effects of 4A zeolite (4A) on the thermal degradation, flame retardancy, and char formation of an efficient halogen‐free flame‐retardant ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer composite (EVA/IFR) were investigated by limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), cone calorimeter test (CCT), digital photography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) and thermogravimetric analytical (TGA) methods. It was found that a small amount of 4A clearly improved the LOI value of the EVA/IFR composite and reinforced the fire retardant performance with a great reduction in the combustion parameters of the EVA/IFR system from the CCT test. The entire composites passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating test. The TGA and integral procedure decomposition temperature (IDPT) results showed that 4A enhanced the thermal stability of the EVA/IFR system and increased the char residue content effectively. The morphological structures observed by digital and SEM imaging revealed that 4A could promote EVA/IFR to form a more continuous and compact intumescent char layer. The LRS and EDS results demonstrated that by introduction of 4A into the EVA/IFR system, a more graphite structure was formed with increase phosphorus content in the char residue. POLYM. ENG. A halogen‐free intumescent flame retardant expandable graphite composite (EG), with an initial expansion temperature of 202°C and expansion volume of 517 mL g−1, was successfully prepared via a facile two‐step intercalation method, i.e. using KMnO4 as oxidant and H2SO4, Na2SiO3·9H2O as intercalators. The prepared EG flame retardant was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, flame retardancy and thermal property of various ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composites, including EVA/EG and EVA/EG/APP (ammonium polyphosphate) specimens, were studied through limiting oxygen index instrument (LOI), vertical combustion UL‐94 rating, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis. The results indicate that the EVA/EG and EVA/EG/APP composites exhibit a better flame retardancy. Addition of EG at a mass fraction of 30% leads LOI of 70EVA/30EG composite improved to 28.7%. Even more, the synergistic effect between EG and APP improves the LOI of 70EVA/10APP /20EG composite to 30.7%. This synergistic efficiency is attributed to the formation of compact and stable layer‐structure, and the prepared EG can make EVA composite reach the UL‐94 level of V‐0. POLYM. The use of some types of expandable graphite (EG) as an intumescent flame‐retardant additive in polyolefins was studied using the cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the limiting oxygen index (LOI), and the‐UL 94 test and through measurement of EG's mechanical and electrical properties. The present study has shown that some suitable EG systems combined with other organic and inorganic halogen‐free flame‐retardant (HFFR) additives apparently can improve the flame‐retardant capacity with good mechanical properties of polyolefin blends. For linear low‐density polyethylene and/or ethylene vinyl acetate/EG/HFFR blends the limiting oxygen index can reach a rating above 29, and the UL‐94 test can produce a value of V–0. The CCT and TGA data show that the EG and EG/HFFR additives not only promoted the formation of carbonaceous char but also greatly decreased the heat release rate and the effective heat of combustion and increased the residues after burning. The synergistic effect of EG with other HFFR additives, such as zinc borate, the phosphorus–nitrogen compound NP28, and microcapsulated red phosphorus is examined and discussed in detail in this article. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The synergistic effects of exfoliated layered double hydroxides (LDH) with some halogen‐free flame retardant (HFFR) additives, such as hyperfine magnesium hydroxide (HFMH), microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP), and expandable graphite (EG), in the low‐density polyethylene/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer/LDH (LDPE/EVA/LDH) nanocomposites have been studied by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analysis (TGA and DTG), mechanical properties, limiting oxygen index (LOI), and UL‐94 tests. The XRD results show that EVA as an excellent compatilizer can promote the exfoliation of LDH and homogeneous dispersion of HFMH in the LDPE/EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposites prepared by melt‐intercalation method. The TEM images demonstrate that the exfoliated LDH layers can act as synergistic compatilizer and dispersant to make the HFMH particles dispersed homogeneously in the LDPE matrix. The results from the mechanical, LOI, and UL‐94 tests show that the exfoliated LDH layers can also act as the nano‐enhanced and flame retardant synergistic agents and thus increase the tensile strength, LOI values, and UL‐94 rating of the nanocomposites. The morphological structures of charred residues observed by SEM give the positive evidence that the compact charred layers formed from the LDPE/EVA/HFMH/LDH nanocomposites with the exfoliated LDH layers play an important role in the enhancement of flame retardant and mechanical properties. The TGA and DTG data show that the exfoliated LDH layers as excellent flame retardant synergist of MRP or EG can apparently increase the thermal degradation temperature and the charred residues after burning. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pentaerythritol phosphate melamine salt (PPMS) as a single‐molecule intumescent fire retardant was synthesized and characterized. The influence of the PPMS content on the combustion and thermal decomposition processes of intumescent‐flame‐retardant (IFR) ethylene–vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) composites was studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurement, UL 94 rating testing, cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The LOI and UL 94 rating results illustrate that PPMS used in EVA improved the flame retardancy of the EVA composites. The cone calorimetry test results show that the addition of PPMS significantly decreased the heat‐release rate, total heat release, and smoke‐production rate and enhanced the residual char fire performance of the EVA composites. The IFR–EVA3 composite showed the lowest heat‐release and smoke‐production rates and the highest char residue; this means that the IFR–EVA3 composite had the best flame retardancy. The thermogravimetry results show that the IFR–EVA composites had more residual char than pure EVA; the char residue yield increased with increasing PPMS content. The analysis results for the char residue structures also illustrated that the addition of PPMS into the EVA resin helped to enhance the fire properties of the char layer and improve the flame retardancy of the EVA composites. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synergistic effects of fumed silica on the thermal and flame‐retardant properties of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) polypropylene based on the NP phosphorus‐nitrogen compound have been studied by Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, cone calorimeter test (CCT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and UL‐94 tests. The LOI and UL‐94 data show that when ≤1 wt % fumed silica substituted for the IFR additive NP can increase 2 to 4% LOI values of the PP blends and keep the V‐0 rating. The data obtained from the CCT tests indicate the heat release rates (HRR) reduce by about 23% for the PP/NP sample with 0.5 wt % fumed silica, whereas the mass loss rates (MLR) and total heat release (THR) values are much lower than those of the PP/NP samples without fume silica. The TGA data demonstrate that a suitable amount of fumed silica can increase the thermal stability and charred residue of the PP/IFR/SiO2 blends after 500°C. The morphological structures of charred residues observed by SEM give positive evidence that a suitable amount of fumed silica can promote the formation of compact intumescent charred layers and prevent the charred layers from cracking, which effectively protects the underlying polymer from burning. The dynamic FTIR spectra reveal that the synergistic flame‐retardant mechanism of a suitable amount of fumed silica with IFR additive is due to its physical process in the condensed phases. However, a high loading of fumed silica restricts the formation of charred layers with P? O? P and P? O? C complexes formed from burning of polymer materials and destroys the swelling behavior of intumescent charred layers, which deteriorates the flame retardant and thermal properties of the PP/IFR blends. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The flammability characterization and synergistic flame‐retardant effect of Fe‐montmorillonite (Fe‐OMT) in the ethylene‐vinyl acetate/aluminum hydroxide (EVA/ATH) compounds were studied using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, cone calorimeter, microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that addition of Fe‐OMT increases the LOI value and improves the UL 94 rating. Cone calorimeter data indicate that the addition of Fe‐OMT greatly reduced the heat release rate and carbon monoxide production rate. Furthermore a compact char residue formed on the surface of the sample with a suitable of Fe‐OMT during the combustion. The MCC results indicate that addition of Fe‐OMT reduced the heat release rate and catalyzed the decomposition of EVA. The TGA data showed further evidence that Fe‐OMT can catalyze carbonization reactions. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2012. © 2011 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Three kinds of inorganic particles, zinc borate (ZB), organic montmorillonite (OMMT), and expanded graphite (EG) as synergistic flame retardants, are incorporated into ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/polypropylene (EPDM/PP) composites filled with intumescent flame retardants (IFR). The effect of three synergistic flame retardants on the combustion, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the EPDM/PP/IFR composites are investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy, mechanical property testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results from LOI, UL-94, and CCT show that the synergistic effect of IFR with ZB and EG is better than IFR with OMMT in the flame retardant EPDM/PP/IFR composites. The TGA results indicate that the thermal stability and char residues of the composites is improved with the addition of inorganic particles, which is attributed to the formation of dense char layers to isolate heat flow. DMA results including storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and loss factor (tan δ) suggest that the composites with inorganic particles exhibit more rubber-filler interaction, which limits the movement of the rubber chains.  相似文献

The flame retardancy and mechanical properties of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) polymer nanocomposite based on magnesium hydroxide (MH) nanoparticles with lamellar‐shape morphological structures and synergistic agent microcapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) have been studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter test (CCT), UL‐94 test, tensile strength (TS), and elongation at break (EB). Results showed that LOI values of lamellar‐like nanosized MH (50 × 350 nm2) samples were 1–7 vol. % higher than those of the common micrometer grade MH (1–2 μm) in all additive levels. When 1–3 phr MRP substituted for nanosized MH filler, LOI value increased greatly from original 37 to 55, and met the V‐0 rating in the UL‐94 test. The values of TS for MH nanoparticles composites increased from 10.4 to 17.0 MPa as additive loading levels increased from 80 to 150 phr, respectively, while the corresponding values for common micrometer MH composites decreased steadily from 9.7 to 7.1 MPa. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed two‐step flame‐retardant mechanism. First, MH particles decompose endothermically with the release of 30.1% hydration water in the 320–370°C temperature range. Second, MRP promote the formation of compact charred layers slowly in the condensed phase in the 450–550°C temperature range. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

A synergistic effect on flame retardancy was found when hydroxy silicone oil (HSO) was incorporated into ethylene vinyl acetate/aluminum hydroxide (EVA/ATH) composite. The fire performance of EVA and EVA composites was studied by using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94, and cone calorimeter test (CCT). Compared with the EVA/ATH binary composite, the LOI values of the EVA/ATH/HSO ternary composites at the same additive loading are all decreased. The CCT data indicated that the addition of HSO in EVA/ATH system not only reduces the heat release rate, but also prolonged the ignition time of the composite. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that ATH accelerated the loss of acetic acid, but hydroxy silicone oil assisted to reduce ATH's accelerating effect.  相似文献

In this work, polyamide 6 (PA6) as a charring agent has been used in combination with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)‐microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MTAPP) forming intumescent flame retardants (IFRs) which applies in polypropylene (PP). The effects of the IFRs on the flame retardancy, morphology of char layers, water resistance, thermal properties and mechanical properties of flame‐retardant PP composites are investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical properties test. The results show that the PP/MTAPP/PA6 composites exhibit much better flame‐retardant performances than the PP/MTAPP composites. The higher LOI values and UL‐94 V‐2 of the PP/MTAPP composites with suitable amount of PA6 are obtained, which is attributed to the thick and compact char layer structure evidenced by SEM. The results from TGA and DSC demonstrate that the introduction of PA6 into PP/MTAPP composites has a great effect on the thermal stability and crystallization behaviors of the composites. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of PP/MTAPP/PA6 composites are also improved greatly due to the presence of PA6 as a charring agent. POLYM. ENG. Two types of microcapsule flame retardants are prepared by coating ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP) with epoxy resin (EP) as the shell via in situ polymerization, and blended with high density polyethylene (HDPE)/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) composites to obtain flame‐retardant HDPE materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and water contact angle results confirm the formation of core–shell structures of EP@APP and EP@ADP. The limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), cone calorimetry, and Raman spectroscopy are employed to characterize the HDPE/GNPs composites filled with EP@APP and EP@ADP core–shell materials. A UL94 V‐0 level and LOI of 34% is achieved, and the two flame retardants incorporated in the HDPE/GNPs composite at 20 wt % in total play a synergistic effect in the flame retardancy of the composite at a mass ratio of EP@ADP:EP@APP = 2:1. According to the cone‐calorimetric data, the compounding composites present much lower peak heat release rate (300 kW/m2) and total heat release (99.4 MJ/m2) than those of pure HDPE. Raman spectroscopic analysis of the composites after combustion reveals that the degree of graphitization of the residual char can reach 2.31, indicating the remarkable flame retarding property of the composites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
