Thermoresponsive graft copolymers of ε‐caprolactone and N‐isopropylacrylamide were synthesized by a combination of ring‐opening polymerization and the sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The copolymer composition, chemical structure, and the self‐assembled structure were characterized. The graft length and density of the copolymers were well controlled by varying the feed ratio of monomer to initiator and the fraction of chlorides along PCL backbone, which is acting as the macroinitiator for ATRP. In aqueous solution, PCL‐g‐PNIPAAm can assemble into the spherical micelles which comprise of the biodegradable hydrophobic PCL core and thermoresponsive hydrophilic PNIPAAm corona. The critical micelle concentrations of PCL‐g‐PNIPAAm were determined under the range of 6.4–23.4 mg/L, which increases with the PNIPAAm content increasing. The mean hydrodynamic diameters of PCL‐g‐PNIPAAm micelles depend strongly on the graft length and density of the PNIPAAm segment, allowing to tune the particle size within a wide range. Additionally, the PCL‐g‐PNIPAAm micelles exhibit thermosensitive properties and aggregate when the temperature is above the lower critical solution temperature. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐initiated microwave‐assisted ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in bulk was investigated, and a series of poly(vinyl alcohol)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PVA‐g‐PCL) copolymers were prepared, with the degree of polymerization (DP) of PCL side chains and the degree of substitution (DS) of PVA by PCL being in the range of 3–24 and 0.35–0.89, respectively. The resultant comb‐like PVA‐g‐PCL copolymers were confirmed by means of FTIR, 1H NMR, and viscometry measurement. The introduction of hydrophilic backbone resulted in the decrease in both melting point and crystallization property of the PVA‐g‐PCL copolymers comparing with linear PCL. With higher microwave power, the DP of PCL side chains and DS of PVA backbone were higher, and the polymerization reaction proceeded more rapidly. Both the DP and monomer conversion increased with irradiation time, while the DS increased first and then remained constant. With initiator in low concentration, the DP and DS were higher, while the monomer was converted more slowly. Microwaves dramatically improved the polymerization reaction in comparison of conventional heating method. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 104, 3973–3979, 2007  相似文献

In this research, a smart membrane material of graft copolymer of poly(vinylidene fluoride) with poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PVDF‐g‐PNIPAAm) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as a macroinitiator and direct initiation of the secondary fluorinated site PVDF facilitates grafting the N‐isopropylacrylamide comonomer. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The temperature‐sensitive membrane was prepared from the PVDF‐g‐PNIPAAm graft copolymers by the phase inversion method. The effects of temperature on the flux of pure water of membrane was investigated. The results showed that alkyl fluorides were successfully applied as ATRP initiators in the synthetic condition and the flux of pure water through the PVDF‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane depended on the temperature change. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Grafting of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(lactide) (PLA) chains on poly(vinyl alcohol) backbone (PVA degree of hydrolysis 99%) was investigated using MgH2 environmental catalyst and melt‐grown ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and L ‐lactide (LA), that avoiding undesirable toxic catalyst and solvent. The ability of MgH2 as catalyst as well as yield of reaction were discussed according to various PVA/CL/MgH2 and PVA/LA/MgH2 ratio. PVA‐g‐PCL and PVA‐g‐PLA were characterized by 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR, DSC, SEC, IR. For graft copolymers easily soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or chloroform, wettability and surface energy of cast film varied in relation with the length and number of hydrophobic chains. Aqueous solution of micelle‐like particles was realized by dissolution in THF then addition of water. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) decreased with hydrophobic chains. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Functional poly(carbonate‐b‐ester)s were synthesized in buck by ring‐opening polymerization of the carbonate (TMC, MBC, or BMC) with tert‐butyl N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl) carbamate as an initiator, and then with ε‐CL (or ε‐BCL) comonomer. Subsequently, the PMMC‐b‐PCL with pendent carboxyl groups and the PTMC‐b‐PHCL with pendent hydroxyl groups were obtained by catalytic debenzylation. DSC analysis indicated that only one Tg at an intermediate temperature the Tgs of the two polymer blocks. A decrease Tg was observed when an increase contents of ε‐CL incorporated into the copolymers. In contrast, two increased Tms were observed with increasing PCL content. The block copolymers formed micelle in aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (cmcs) in the range of 2.23–14.6 mg/L and with the mean hydrodynamic diameters in the range of 100–280 nm, depending on the composition of copolymers. The drug entrapment efficiency and hydrolytic degradation behavior of micelle were also evaluated. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2007  相似文献

Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [P(NIPAM‐co‐HEMA)] copolymer was synthesized by controlled radical polymerization from respective N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomers with a predetermined ratio. To prepare the thermosensitive and biodegradable nanoparticles, new thermosensitive graft copolymer, poly(L ‐lactide)‐graft‐poly(N‐isoporylacrylamide‐co‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [PLLA‐g‐P(NIPAM‐co‐HEMA)], with the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) near the normal body temperature, was synthesized by ring opening polymerization of L ‐lactide in the presence of P(NIPAM‐co‐HEMA). The amphiphilic property of the graft copolymers was formed by the grafting of the PLLA hydrophobic chains onto the PNIPAM based hydrophilic backbone. Therefore, the graft copolymers can self‐assemble into uniformly spherical micelles ò about 150–240 nm in diameter as observed by the field emission scanning electron microscope and dynamic light scattering. Dexamethasone can be loaded into these nanostructures during dialysis with a relative high loading capacity and its in vitro release depends on temperature. Above the LCST, most of the drugs were released from the drug‐loaded micelles, whereas a large amount of drugs still remains in the micelles after 48 h below the LCST. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Brush type of poly (3‐hydroxy butyrate), PHB, copolymer synthesis has been reported. Natural PHB was chlorinated by passing chlorine gas through PHB solution in CHCl3/CCl4 mixture (75/25 v/v) to prepare chlorinated PHB, PHB‐Cl, with the chlorine contents varying between 2.18 and 39.8 wt %. Toluene solution of PHB‐Cl was used in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate, MMA, in the presence of cuprous bromide (CuBr)/2,2′‐bipyridine complex as catalyst, at 90°C. This “grafting from” technique led to obtain poly (3‐hydroxybutyrate)‐g‐poly(methylmethacrylate) (PHB‐g‐PMMA) brush type graft copolymers (cylindrical brush). The polymer brushes were fractionated by fractional precipitation methods and the γ values calculated from the ratio of the volume of nonsolvent to volume of solvent of brushes were ranged between 2.8 and 9.5 depending on the molecular weight, grafting density, and side chain length of the brushes, while the γ values of PHB, PHB‐Cl, and homo‐PMMA were 2.7–3.8, 0.3–2.4, and 3.0–3.9, respectively. The fractionated brushes were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. PHB‐g‐PMMA brush type graft copolymers showed narrower molecular weight distribution (mostly in range between 1.3 and 2.2) than the PHB‐Cl macroinitiator (1.6–3.5). PHB contents in the brushes were calculated from their TGA thermograms and found to be in range between 22 and 42 mol %. The morphologies of PHB‐g‐PMMA brushes were also studied by scanning electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

Poly(propylene) (PP) membrane grafted with poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), which is known to have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at around 32°C, was prepared by the plasma‐induced graft polymerization technique. Graft polymerization of PNIPAAm onto a PP membrane was confirmed by microscopic attenuated total reflection/Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. The grafting yield of PNIPAAm increased with the concentration of N‐isopropylacrylamide monomer and the reaction time of graft polymerization. The average pore size of the PP membrane also affected the grafting yield. From the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) measurement, we observed a morphological change in the PP‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane under wet conditions at 25°C below LCST. The permeability of water through the PP‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane was controlled by temperature. The PP‐g‐PNIPAAm membrane (PN05 and PN10) exhibited higher water permeability (Lp) than the original PP substrate membrane below LCST. As the temperature increased to above LCST, Lp gradually decreased. In addition, the graft yield of PNIPAAm and the average pore size of the PP substrate influenced water permeability. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined graft copolymers based on poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) via poly(linoleic acid) (PLina), are derived from soybean oil. Poly(linoleic acid)‐g‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PLina‐g‐PCL) and poly(linoleic acid)‐g‐poly(styrene)‐g‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PLina‐g‐PSt‐g‐PCL) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone initiated by PLina and one‐pot synthesis of graft copolymers, and by ring‐opening polymerization and free radical polymerization by using PLina, respectively. PLina‐g‐PCL, PLina‐g‐PSt‐g‐PCL3, and PLina‐g‐PSt‐g‐PCL4 copolymers containing 96.97, 75.04 and 80.34 mol% CL, respectively, have been investigated regarding their enzymatic degradation properties in the presence of Pseudomonas lipase. In terms of weight loss, after 1 month, 51.5 % of PLina‐g‐PCL, 18.8 % of PLina‐g‐PSt‐g‐PCL3, and 38.4 % of PLina‐g‐PSt‐g‐PCL4 were degraded, leaving remaining copolymers with molecular weights of 16,140, 83,220 and 70,600 Da, respectively. Introducing the PLina unit into the copolymers greatly decreased the degradation rate. The molar ratio of [CL]/[Lina] dramatically decreased, from 21.3 to 8.4, after 30 days of incubation. Moreover, reduced PCL content in PLina‐g‐PSt‐g‐PCL copolymers decreased the degradation rate, probably due to the PSt enrichment within the structure, which blocks lipase contact with PCL units. Thus, copolymerization of PCL with PLina and PSt units leads to a controllable degradation profile, which encourages the use of these polymers as promising biomaterials for tissue engineering applications.  相似文献

Amphiphilic thermally sensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(tetramethylene carbonate) block copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of tetramethylene carbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAAm) as macro‐initiator in the presence of stannous octoate as catalyst. The synthesis involved PNiPAAm bearing a single terminal hydroxyl group prepared by telomerization using 2‐hydroxyethanethiol as a chain‐transfer agent. The copolymers were characterized using 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Their solutions show reversible changes in optical properties: transparent below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and opaque above the LCST. The LCST depends on the polymer composition and the media. Owing to their amphiphilic characteristics, the block copolymers form micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range 1.11–22.9 mg L?1. Increasing the hydrophobic segment length or decreasing the hydrophilic segment length in the amphiphilic diblock copolymers produces lower CMCs. A core‐shell structure of the micelles is evident from 1H NMR analyses of the micelles in D2O. Transmission electron microscopic analyses of micelle morphology show a spherical structure of both blank and drug‐loaded micelles. The blank and drug‐loaded micelles have an average size of less than 130 nm. Observations show high drug‐entrapment efficiency and drug‐loading content for the drug‐loaded micelles. 2,5‐Dibromo‐1,4‐(dihydroxymethyl)benzene was used as initiator in ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2) catalyst. The resulting poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) macromonomer, with a central 2,5‐dibromo‐1,4‐diphenylene group, was used in combination with 1,4‐dibromo‐2,5‐dimethylbenzene for a Suzuki coupling in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4 as catalyst or using the system NiCl2/bpy/PPh3/Zn for a Yamamoto‐type polymerization. The poly(p‐phenylenes) (PPP) obtained, with PCL side chains, have solubility properties similar to those of the starting macromonomer, ie soluble in common organic solvents at room temperature. The new polymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and UV spectroscopy and also by GPC measurements. The thermal behaviour of the precursor PCL macromonomer and the final poly(p‐phenylene)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) copolymers were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry analyses and compared. The confined crystallization of poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) block in poly(?‐caprolactone)–poly(l ‐lactide) (PCL‐PLLA) copolymers was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy and atomic force microscopy. To study the effect of crystallization and molecular chain motion state of PLLA blocks in PCL‐PLLA copolymers on PCL crystallization morphology, high‐temperature annealing (180 °C) and low‐temperature annealing (80 °C) were applied to treat the samples. It was found that the crystallization morphology of PCL block in PCL‐PLLA copolymers is not only related to the ratio of block components, but also related to the thermal history. After annealing PCL‐PLLA copolymers at 180 °C, the molten PCL blocks are rejected from the front of PLLA crystal growth into the amorphous regions, which will lead to PCL and PLLA blocks exhibiting obvious fractionated crystallization and forming various morphologies depending on the length of PLLA segment. On the contrary, PCL blocks more easily form banded spherulites after PCL‐PLLA copolymers are annealed at 80 °C because the preexisting PLLA crystal template and the dangling amorphous PLLA chains on PCL segments more easily cause unequal stresses at opposite fold surfaces of PCL lamellae during the growth process. Also, it was found that the growth rate of banded spherulites is less than that of classical spherulites and the growth rate of banded spherulites decreases with decreasing band spacing. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Atactic poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (a‐PHB) and block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐b‐PEG) were synthesized through anionic polymerization and coordination polymerization, respectively. As demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) measurements, both chemosynthesized a‐PHB and biosynthesized isotactic PHB (i‐PHB) are miscible with the PEG segment phase of PCL‐b‐PEGs. However, there is no evidence showing miscibility between both PHBs and the PCL segment phase of the copolymer even though PCL has been block‐copolymerized with PEG. Based on these results, PCL‐b‐PEG was added, as a compatibilizer, to both the PCL/a‐PHB blends and the PCL i‐PHB blends. The blend films were obtained through the evaporation of chloroform solutions of mixed components. Excitingly, the improvement in mechanical properties of PCL/PHB blends was achieved as anticipated initially upon the addition of PCL‐b‐PEG. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(3‐hydroxy octanoate) (PHO), poly(3‐hydroxy butyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), and linoleic acid were grafted onto chitosan via condensation reactions between carboxylic acids and amine groups. Unreacted PHAs and linoleic acid were eliminated via chloroform extraction and for elimination of unreacted chitosan were used 2 wt % of HOAc solution. The pure chitosan graft copolymers were isolated and then characterized by FTIR, 13C‐NMR (in solid state), DSC, and TGA. Microbial polyester percentage grafted onto chitosan backbone was varying from 7 to 52 wt % as a function of molecular weight of PHAs, namely as a function of steric effect. Solubility tests were also performed. Graft copolymers were soluble, partially soluble or insoluble in 2 wt % of HOAc depending on the amount of free primary amine groups on chitosan backbone or degree of grafting percent. Thermal analysis of PHO‐g‐Chitosan graft copolymers indicated that the plastizer effect of PHO by means that they showed melting transitions Tms at 80, 100, and 113°C or a broad Tms between 60.5–124.5°C and 75–125°C while pure chitosan showed a sharp Tm at 123°C. In comparison of the solubility and thermal properties of graft copolymers, linoleic acid derivatives of chitosan were used. Thus, the grafting of poly(3‐hydroxyalkanoate) and linoleic acid onto chitosan decrease the thermal stability of chitosan backbone. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(ether–ester) copolymers were synthesized from poly(2,6 dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The synthesis was carried out by two‐step solution polymerization process. PET oligomers were synthesized via glycolysis and subsequently used in the copolymerization reaction. FTIR spectroscopy analysis shows the coexistence of spectral contributions of PPO and PET on the spectra of their ether–ester copolymers. The composition of the poly(ether–ester)s was calculated via 1H NMR spectroscopy. A single glass transition temperature was detected for all synthesized poly(ether–ester)s. Tg behavior as a function of poly(ether–ester) composition is well represented by the Gordon‐Taylor equation. The molar masses of the copolymers synthesized were calculated by viscosimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2006  相似文献

A series of poly(?‐caprolactone)–poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐PEG) and poly(?‐caprolactone/glycolide)–poly(ethylene glycol) [P(CL/GA)‐PEG] diblock copolymers were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization of ?‐caprolactone or a mixture of ?‐caprolactone and glycolide using monomethoxy PEG (mPEG) as macroinitiator and Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst. The resulting copolymers were characterized using 1H‐NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Copolymer micelles were prepared using the nanoprecipitation method. The morphology of the micelles was spherical or worm‐like as revealed by transmission electron microscopy, depending on the copolymer composition and the length of the hydrophobic block. Introduction of the glycolide component, even in small amounts (CL/GA = 10), disrupted the chain structure and led to the formation of spherical micelles. Interestingly, the micelle size decreased with the encapsulation of paclitaxel. Micelles prepared from mPEG5000‐derived copolymers exhibited better drug loading properties and slower drug release than those from mPEG2000‐derived copolymers. Drug release was faster for copolymers with shorter PCL blocks than for those with longer PCL chains. The introduction of glycolide moieties enhanced drug release, but the overall release rate did not exceed 10% in 30 days. In contrast, drug release was enhanced in acidic media. Therefore, these bioresorbable micelles and especially P(CL/GA)‐PEG micelles with excellent stability, high drug loading content, and prolonged drug release could be promising for applications as drug carriers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Narrow‐distribution, well‐defined comb‐like amphiphilic copolymers are reported in this work. The copolymers are composed of poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐HEMA)) as the backbones and poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) as the grafted chains, with the copolymer backbones being synthesized via atom‐transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and the grafted chains by oxyanionic polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier‐transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The aggregation behavior in aqueous solutions of the comb‐like amphiphilic copolymers was also investigated. 1H NMR spectroscopic and surface tension measurements all indicated that the copolymers could form micelles in aqueous solutions and they possessed high surface activity. The results of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations showed that the hydrodynamic diameters of the comb‐like amphiphilic copolymer aggregates increased with dilution. Because of the protonizable properties of the graft chains, the surface activity properties and micellar state can be easily modulated by variations in pH. Two series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were prepared by the ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and dibutylmagnesium in 1,4‐dioxane solution at 70°C. The triblock structure and molecular weight of the copolymers were analyzed and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The crystallization and thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results illustrated that the crystallization and melting behaviors of the copolymers were depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. Crystallization exothermal peaks (Tc) and melting endothermic peaks (Tm) of PEG block were significantly influenced by the relative length of PCL blocks, due to the hindrance of the lateral PCL blocks. With increasing of the length of PCL blocks, the diffraction and the melting peak of PEG block disappeared gradually in the WAXD patterns and DSC curves, respectively. In contrast, the crystallization of PCL blocks was not suppressed by the middle PEG block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Three types of pegylated amphiphilic copolymers of poly(δ‐valerolactone) (PVL) were copolymerized with methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MePEG) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG4000 and PEG10,000), respectively. Pegylation of PVL allowed copolymers possessing amphiphilic property and efficiently self‐assembled to form micelles with a low critical micelle concentration (CMC) in the range of 10?7–10?8M. The average molecular weight of copolymers was in the range of 10,000–20,000 Da, and the polydispersity of copolymers was about 1.7–1.8. Higher mobility of low molecular weight PEG (i.e., MePEG and PEG4000) than high molecular weight PEG10,000 allowed valerolactone ring opening more efficient in terms of PVL/MePEG and PVL/PEG4000 copolymers possessing longer chain length in hydrophobic domain. Pegylated PVL with low CMC and triblock structure was preferred to encapsulate drug during micelle formation. Although all of these amphiphilic copolymers exhibited controlled release character, the micelles formed by triblock copolymer possessed a more stable core‐shell conformation than that by diblock copolymer, and resulted in the release of drug from triblock micelles slower than that from diblock micelles. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of amphiphilic graft‐copolymers, composed of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) backbones and poly(ethylene oxide) side chains, was synthesized by chemical modification of PVC. The synthesis was based on the reaction between chlorine in PVC (polymerization degree 700) and sodium salt of polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEGs with molecular weights of 200 and 600 were used. The graft polymers were characterized by IR and gel permeation chromatography and the molecular parameters such as the average numbers of grafting chains on the PVC backbones were calculated as well as the grafting percent. The molecular weights of PEG were found to influence the rate of the grafting reaction and the final degree of conversion. The maximum grafting percentage of the resulted polymers after the purification was ca. 34%, regardless of the molecular weight of PEG. No gel was observed in the PVC‐g‐PEOs, in spite of the average numbers of grafting chains up to 32. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 75: 475–479, 2000  相似文献
