Practices on real-time market operation evaluation

Based on multi-settlement market design, this paper introduces PJM's practices on real-time (RT) market operation evaluation, using uplift and a newly developed approach, perfect dispatch, as indicators to measure RT market operation efficiency. The evaluation views the balance between operation risk and economic efficiency in the integrated system and market operation. Some operational improvement and challenges identified through the evaluation are discussed along with potential solutions.

Contemporary Photographic Practices on the British Fairground

The fairground is a somewhat magical and uncharted realm of illusion, deception, thrill and adventure. It offers a glimpse of the improbable and impossible, and a taste or touch of the unattainable. This article looks at the crossover of photography and the British fairground following the gradual take-up of photography in the post-war period. It briefly covers early traditions concomitant with the specialised practice of photography, then it identifies photographic practices on the fairground through distinct communities of engagement including professional and amateur photographers attracted to the spectacle of the fair, ethnographic explorers, dedicated enthusiasts, showpeople and the general public of “punters”. In each case photographs from these communities are presented as well as a selection of photographs depicting these communities of photographers in action. The article concludes with the current situation of camera phone technology, social media and digitally manipulated photographic art as a new aesthetic of the fairground.

Coordination, Organizational Boundaries and Fads in Business Practices

Management literature focuses on two modes of coordination:formal and informal structures. Informal structure grants significantdiscretion to individual actions. Yet two impediments are relatedto such flexibility, those created by opportunism and thosecreated by convergent expectations. Impediments arising fromconvergent expectations exist when the expectations of all membersof an interdependent system are not properly aligned. We usenon-cooperative game theory to provide a foundation for thestudy of convergent expectations. We argue that the incentiveto free-ride on the contributions of others is not a necessarycondition for generating a lack of convergent expectations,and apply the issue of convergent expectations to both the organizationalissues of optimal group and firm boundaries and to the roleof managerial practices such as Total Quality Management (TQM).Building on research from organization theory, social psychologyand game theory, the paper ties the idea of convergent expectationsto the grouping dilemma of the trade-off between higher coordinationwithin groups and lower coordination between groups. We arguethat this grouping dilemma can serve as a basis for determiningthe actual boundaries of both groups in organizations and theorganization itself. Examining the role of fads in businesspractices, we conclude that, however suspect their underlyingvalue as decision aids may be, these practices can serve asuseful coordination mechanisms.
