Enterprise resource-planning (ERP) systems, relational databases, and other mature information technologies are undergoing commoditization and facing challenges from software-as-a-service (SaaS) players moving into front-end enterprise applications. Yet, such systems are likely to be around for a long time because they are reliable and have lengthy life cycles. That said, investing in disruptive markets and business models and exploring innovative technologies in high-performance computing, pervasive connectivity, Web services, and other trends will be vital if ERP vendors wish to survive well in the unfolding future.

游戏人工智能中的高级寻路技术

本文探讨了现有的A*(Astar)寻路算法,并在此基础上进行优化,增加动态寻路的概念,A*算法是针对静态物体的寻路,实际游戏中会出现许多动态物体,如移动的队友或怪物,本文在寻路过程中将考虑和动态物体的碰撞,优化现有算法,大大提高游戏的真实度。实验证明,该算法在大规模的地形上寻路效果也较好。

In AI's academic circles, we're very good at inventing and refining new algorithms, methods, and techniques, and our conferences and journals teem with new developments and ideas. But what happened to that pioneering spirit that wanted to actually create artificial intelligence? To the casual observer, those early goals of machine intelligence seem to have been lost somewhere along the way. The AI world's inventiveness knows do bounds, and we're eagerly looking forward to the 2008 crop of innovation.

Verification is experimentation!

The formal verification of concurrent systems is usually seen as an example par excellence of the application of mathematical methods to computer science. Although the practical application of such verification methods will always be limited by the underlying forms of combinatorial explosion, recent years have shown remarkable progress in computer-aided formal verification. This makes formal verification a practical proposition for a growing class of real-life applications, and has put formal methods on the agenda of industry, in particular in the areas where correctness is critical in one sense or another. Paradoxically, the results of this progress provide evidence that successful applications of formal verification have significant elements that do not fit the paradigm of pure mathematical reasoning. In this essay we argue that verification is part of an experimental paradigm in at least two senses. We submit that this observation has consequences for the ways in which we should research and apply formal methods. Published online: 15 May 2001

Turn Your Mobile Into the Ball: Rendering Live Football Game Using Vibration

Vibration offers many potential benefits for the use of mobile phones. In this paper, we propose a new method of rendering live football game on mobile phones using vibration. A mobile phone is “synchronized” with the ball in the real field. By holding the phone, users are able to experience dynamic movements of the ball, to know attacking directions and which team is leading the attack. The usability test of our system shows that vibrotactile display is suitable for rendering live football information on mobile phones by adopting designed coding schemes with a right training process.

How Long Do We Expect to Live? A Review of the Evidence

How long people expect to live sets an important context for longevity risk in retirement planning and may contribute to the acceptability of policies to raise pension age. However, there have been few studies representative of a national population on subjective longevity. This paper reviews the available evidence. It finds that despite some studies reporting that subjective longevity is close to average measures in population life tables the prevailing tendency is to underestimate lifespans. Men generally reflect that they have lower actual longevity than women on average, but men are more optimistic, so that women are more likely to underestimate their likely longevity. People may take account of some mortality risk factors in estimating their own longevity, but appear not to understand the true extent of risk. There is little data on how people think about longevity or why they choose a particular estimate of their own likely lifespan. Thus, international evidence suggests potential for longevity risk in individual retirement planning and raises significant questions about the policy implications which can only become more acute in ageing populations.
