These studies were designed to measure the impact of different fish oil sources of dietary (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid on the alpha-tocopherol content of rat immune cells. In the first experiment, rats were fed diets containing either lard, corn oil, menhaden fish oil or cod liver oil. In the second study, sardine fish oil replaced corn oil. Dietary fat source did not significantly influence body weights or the yield of immune cells in either study. In both studies, plasma and liver alpha-tocopherol concentrations were significantly lower in (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid-fed rats than in rats fed lard. In the first study, immune cell alpha-tocopherol concentrations followed those observed in the plasma and liver. These concentrations closely paralleled the amount of RRR-alpha-tocopheryl acetate added to diets and not the total vitamin E present, which was the same for all treatment groups. However, in the second study, alpha-tocopherol concentration of immune cells was not significantly different among rats fed lard, menhaden fish oil, and sardine fish oil. In that study both the amount and form of vitamin E were carefully balanced across dietary treatment groups. In conclusion, despite having similar amounts of (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids, two out of three fish oils tested did not lower immune cell alpha-tocopherol concentration even in the face of significantly reduced plasma and liver alpha-tocopherol concentrations.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We investigated how cod liver oil influences the amount of essential fatty acids in mothers' breast milk. DESIGN AND INTERVENTION: Lactating mothers (n =22) were randomized into four groups 3-8 weeks after parturition. They were supplemented for 14 days with 0, 2.5, 5 and 10 ml cod liver oil (7.7 g eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), 10.2 g docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and 22.9 g n-3 fatty acids in total per 100 ml). RESULTS: In maternal plasma phospholipids there was an increase in the content of EPA and DHA in the group supplemented with 10 ml cod liver oil daily (P < or = 0.05). DHA concentrations in breast milk pre-supplementation ranged from 0.15 to 1.56 wt% and increased in all supplemented groups (P< or =0.05). The concentration of EPA in breast milk increased in the groups supplemented with 5 or 10 ml cod liver oil (P< or =0.05), whereas the concentration of arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) did not change in any of the supplemented groups. Total intake of DHA adjusted to body mass index (BMI), correlated to DHA concentrations in plasma (r = 0.49, P = 0.02) and breast milk (r = 0.45, P = 0.04). The concentration of tocopherol did not change during the supplementation period, neither in plasma nor in breast milk. CONCLUSION: Dietary intake of DHA is reflected in the concentration of DHA in breast milk, without affecting the concentration of AA or tocopherol.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between consumption of fish and fish products registered by a comprehensive food frequency questionnaire and the composition of fatty acids in serum phospholipids. DESIGN: Cross-section study. SETTING: Cardiovascular screening centre in Trondheim, Mid-Norway. SUBJECTS: Of 256 eligible women 242 agreed to participate in the present study. Altogether 234 middle-aged women (91.4%) completed the questionnaire and gave a valid blood sample. RESULTS: Total frequency consumption of fish for dinner showed only weak association with serum phospholipid fatty acid composition. In separate analyses of lean and fatty fish, consumption of fatty fish was negatively associated with n-6 and positively associated with n-3 fatty acids in serum phospholipids, while no significant associations were found for lean fish consumption. Cod liver oil consumption was strongly related to the phospholipid fatty acid composition. The associations improved moderately when adding portion size information. Spearman's correlation coefficient between dietary intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and serum phospholipid EPA was 0.58, and Spearman's correlation coefficient between intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and serum phospholipid DHA was 0.53. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that in populations with a high consumption of fish and cod liver oil, habitual intake can be reflected in serum phospholipids. However, as the fat content of fish is highly variable, separate registration of lean and fatty fish consumption is needed.  相似文献

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is incorporated in large amounts in structural lipids of the developing central nervous system. Milk DHA varies with maternal dietary DHA, but the effect of different intakes of DHA from milk on infant tissue fatty acids is unknown. The effect of milk high or low in DHA on the fatty acid composition of piglet brain, synaptic plasma membranes, retina, liver, plasma and RBC was studied. Pregnant sows were fed diets with 2.5 g/100 g vegetable oil until 4 d pre-partum and were then fed diets with 2.5 g/100 g soybean and canola oils or 4 g/100 g soybean oil plus 1 g/100 g fish oil to 15 d postpartum. Fish oil increased the milk DHA and eicosapentanoic acid from 0.1 to 1.5% and from 0.2 to 0.4% of fatty acids, respectively, but did not alter milk arachidonic acid. The level of DHA was significantly higher in plasma, liver and RBC phospholipids, brain and synaptic plasma membrane of 15-d-old piglets fed milk with high DHA compared with low DHA. Liver, plasma and RBC, but not brain or retina arachidonic acid, was significantly lower in piglets fed the high DHA milk compared with low DHA milk. Thus, differences in plasma, RBC and liver arachidonic acid and DHA of 15-d-old nursing piglets due to the maternal dietary fat were not accompanied by similar differences in central nervous system fatty acids. These studies show maternal DHA intake determines in part the infant plasma, RBC and liver phospholipid DHA.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported an association between tea drinking and lung cancer. In view of these data, the relationship between tea drinking as well as other dietary factors and lung cancer was investigated in a case-control study in the west of Sweden. METHODS: Patients with suspected lung cancer were collected from pulmonary units at central hospitals in the area investigated, and population controls were matched for age. The material reported here comprises 308 male cases with a confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer and 504 controls. The participants were interviewed by specially trained nurses, using a questionnaire to assess smoking, dietary habits, occupational exposures and conditions in the residential area (local air pollution). This paper reports the results from dietary factors studied with a food frequency technique. RESULTS: The results demonstrated a strong protective effect of vegetables (odds ratio [OR] = 0.69, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.46-1.05, and OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.23-0.61 for intermediate and high consumption classes respectively). A low OR was consistent for all histological types of lung cancer. High consumption of fruits did not show any similar protective effect. Drinking milk was associated with a dose-response related risk increase after adjustment for smoking and vegetable consumption (P for trend = 0.07). Odds ratio was 1.73, 95% CI: 1.00-3.01 for high consumption of milk. CONCLUSIONS: High intake of vegetables had a strong protective effect among males. Diet is thus a potential confounding factor in studies on lung cancer and environmental factors and should thus be taken into consideration in the planning of such studies.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of type of dietary fat and phenobarbital on gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-positive foci development. Four groups of six female Sprague-Dawley rats were initiated with diethylnitrosamine (15 mg/kg) at 24 hours of age. After weaning, they were fed nutritionally complete semipurified diets containing 15% corn oil or 5% corn oil + 10% fish oil and supplemented with 5,000 ppm vitamin E with or without phenobarbital (500 ppm) for three months. Dietary fish oil significantly increased hepatic phospholipid eicosapentaenoate and docosahexaenoate concentrations and decreased arachidonate concentration compared with 15% corn oil (p < 0.05). Corn oil (15%) significantly increased hepatic prostaglandin F2 alpha concentration compared with 10% fish oil (p < 0.05). Phenobarbital significantly stimulated glutathione S-transferase activity in both dietary fat groups (p < 0.05). In the absence of phenobarbital, type of dietary fat showed no effect on hepatic gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-positive foci development. However, in the presence of phenobarbital, 15% corn oil significantly enhanced gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-positive foci development compared with 10% fish oil (p < 0.05). Phenobarbital showed a strong tumor-promoting action in both dietary groups. In conclusion, there was an interaction between type of dietary fat and phenobarbital on gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-positive foci development during hepatocarcinogenesis in rats.  相似文献

Thirty-six young male Syrian hamsters were fed with test diets containing coconut oil, soybean oil or fish oil with and without 0.5% cholesterol for 6 weeks. Without dietary cholesterol supplementation, animals on the fish oil diet had significantly lower plasma total triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol than those on the coconut oil or soybean oil diet. The decrease of TG was seen mainly in the very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) fraction. The degree of decrease in cholesterol was similar in all of the lipoprotein fractions. With 0.5% dietary cholesterol supplementation, there was no significant difference in plasma TG level among the three dietary groups. However, the fish oil group had significantly higher plasma cholesterol than the coconut oil and soybean oil groups. The increase of cholesterol was mainly in the VLDL and low density lipoprotein (LDL) fractions. In contrast to the plasma cholesterol level, the hepatic cholesteryl ester content was significantly lower in the cholesterol-supplemented fish oil group than in the coconut oil and soybean oil counterparts. The cholesterol-supplemented fish oil group showed higher liver microsomal acyl-coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase activity than the other two groups, while there was no significant difference in the excretion of fecal neutral and acidic sterols among the three dietary groups.  相似文献

The relation of intakes of specific fatty acids and the risk of coronary heart disease was examined in a cohort of 21,930 smoking men aged 50-69 years who were initially free of diagnosed cardiovascular disease. All men participated in the Finnish Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study and completed a detailed and validated dietary questionnaire at baseline. After 6.1 years of follow-up from 1985-1988, the authors documented 1,399 major coronary events and 635 coronary deaths. After controlling for age, supplement group, several coronary risk factors, total energy, and fiber intake, the authors observed a significant positive association between the intake of trans-fatty acids and the risk of coronary death. For men in the top quintile of trans-fatty acid intake (median = 6.2 g/day), the multivariate relative risk of coronary death was 1.39 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.09-1.78) (p for trend = 0.004) as compared with men in the lowest quintile of intake (median = 1.3 g/day). The intake of omega-3 fatty acids from fish was also directly related to the risk of coronary death in the multivariate model adjusting also for trans-saturated and cis-monounsaturated fatty acids (relative risk (RR) = 1.30, 95% CI 1.01-1.67) (p for trend = 0.06 for men in the highest quintile of intake compared with the lowest). There was no association between intakes of saturated or cis-monounsaturated fatty acids, linoleic or linolenic acid, or dietary cholesterol and the risk of coronary deaths. All the associations were similar but somewhat weaker for all major coronary events.  相似文献

Finnish human samples from the Helsinki area and Arctic cod samples from Vestertana Fjord (Norway) were analyzed for polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDE) and 2,3,7,8-chloro substituted dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF). The PCDE, PCDD and PCDF contents in human and animal samples from Finland and elsewhere were briefly reviewed. PCDEs were non-detectable in human liver and testis, but some PCDE congeners were identified in human adipose tissue and fat of boiled Arctic cod liver composite. The contents of PCDEs in Finnish human samples were similar to those reported in the literature for human tissues from North America. The estimated concentrations of PCDEs 99, 147 + 153 (coeluting) and 206 ranged between 2 and 8 ng/g lipid weight (lw) in one Finnish human adipose tissue. The concentrations of PCDE congeners identified in the cod liver fat were between 0.4 and 5 ng/g lw. Of toxic PCDDs and PCDFs, hepta- and octa-CDDs dominated in human. The concentrations of PCDD and PCDF congeners varied from < 2 to 7700 pg/g lw in human. In Arctic cod samples analyzed (muscle tissues of an air dried cod and cod liver fat), 2,3,7,8-tetra-CDF was nearly the only congener of PCDD/PCDFs detected.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Calcium and vitamin D have been hypothesized to reduce colorectal cancer risk. Epidemiological evidence, however, is mixed. METHODS: To explore those relationships, data were collected as part of a population-based, case-control study of colorectal cancer in Wisconsin women (678 controls, 348 colon and 164 rectal cancer cases). A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to ascertain food and dietary supplement intake 2 years prior to interview. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (OR). RESULTS: Higher levels of calcium intake were associated with reduced colon and rectal cancer risk. The following adjusted OR and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were observed, comparing the fifth quintile (based on control intake) with the first: colon cancer: OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4-1.0, P-trend: 0.03; rectal cancer: OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.3-1.1, P-trend: 0.07. Similar relationships were observed for vitamin D intake, although OR were closer to the null value and did not always behave in a step-wise fashion (fifth quintile versus the first--colon cancer: OR = 0.7, 95% CI: 0.4-1.1, P-trend: 0.05; rectal cancer: OR = 0.8, 95% CI: 0.5-1.5, P-trend: 0.42). CONCLUSION: These data support a protective association of calcium on colon and rectal cancer risk.  相似文献

Previous knowledge on risk factors for oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, and esophageal cancer has been based mainly on case-control studies. In the present study, the impact of alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, and dietary factors on upper aerogastric tract cancer risk was studied in a cohort of 10,960 Norwegian men followed from 1968 through 1992, in which period a total of 71 upper aerogastric tract cancers occurred. The relative risk (RR) of cancer was 3.9 (95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 2.1-7.1) for the highest consumption group of alcohol and 4.7 (CI = 1.7-13.2) for the highest smoking level, compared with the respective reference groups. Among the dietary items, high consumption of oranges was associated with reduced cancer risk (RR = 0.5, CI = 0.3-1.0), as was high consumption of bread (RR = 0.2, CI = 0.1-0.5). Frequent consumption of beef and bacon increased relative cancer risk bordering on significance. The present results are largely in accordance with previous studies. The decreased risk associated with a high intake of bread deserves further investigation.  相似文献

PURPOSE: A cohort of middle-aged and older men and women were followed for an average of 5.5 yr to examine the association between physical fitness, physical activity, and the prevalence of functional limitation. METHODS: The participants received medical assessments between 1980 and 1988 and responded to a mail-back survey regarding functional status in 1990. RESULTS: Among 3495 men and 1175 women over 40 yr of age at baseline, 350 (7.5%) reported at least one functional limitation in daily or household activities at follow-up. The prevalence of functional limitation was higher among women than men. Physically fit and physically active participants reported less functional limitation than unfit or sedentary participants. After controlling for age and other risk factors, the prevalence of functional limitation was lower for both moderately fit (odds ratio = 0.4, 95% CI = 0.2-0.6) and high fit men (odds ratio = 0.3, 95% CI = 0.2-0.4), compared with low fit men. Corresponding figures for women were 0.5 (0.3-0.7) and 0.3 (0.2-0.5) for moderately fit and high fit women. The association between physical activity and functional limitation was similar to the data for physical fitness. CONCLUSIONS: These data support a protective effect of physical fitness and physical activity on functional limitation among older adults and extend this protective effect to middle-aged men and women.  相似文献

Physical activity and risk of colorectal cancer in men and women   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We examined the association between self-reported occupational and recreational physical activity and the subsequent risk of colorectal cancer in a population-based cohort in Norway. During a mean follow-up time of 16.3 years for males and 15.5 years for females, 236 and 99 colon cancers and 170 and 58 rectal cancers were observed in males and females, respectively, among 53,242 males and 28,274 females who attended the screening between 1972 and 1978. Physical activity at a level equivalent to walking or bicycling for at least four hours a week during leisure-time was associated with decreased risk of colon cancer among females when compared with the sedentary group (RR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.40-0.97). Reduced risk of colon cancer was particularly marked in the proximal colon (RR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.28-0.93). This effect was not observed for occupational physical activity alone, probably due to a narrow range of self-reported physical activity at work among females. However, by combining occupational and recreational physical activity we observed an inverse dose-response effect as increasing total activity significantly reduced colon cancer risk (P for trend = 0.04). Among males 45 years or older at entry to the study, an inverse dose-response effect was observed between total physical activity and colon cancer risk (P for trend = 0.04). We also found in males a stronger preventive effect for physical activity in the proximal as compared to distal colon. In addition, we found a borderline significant decrease in colon cancer risk for occupational physical activity in males 45 years or older when compared to the sedentary group (RR = 0.74, 95% CI 0.53-1.04). All results were adjusted for age, body mass index, serum cholesterol and geographic region. No association between physical activity and rectal cancer was observed in males or females. The protective effect of physical activity on colon cancer risk is discussed in regard to energy balance, dietary factors, age, social class, body mass index and gastrointestinal transit time.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to validate the results of a meta-analysis showing the efficacy of fish oil in rheumatoid arthritis with the results of a re-analysis of the complete primary data set. A Medline search yielded seven published papers. Three additional trials were found by contacting authorities in the field. Inclusion criteria included (1) a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, (2) use of at least one of seven predetermined outcome measures, (3) results reported for both placebo and treatment groups at baseline and follow-up, (4) randomization, and (5) parallel or cross-over design. Papers were scored for quality. Demographic and outcomes variables were collected. For the re-analysis of the primary data, the same variables were abstracted for the 395 individual patients randomized. The meta-analysis demonstrated that dietary fish oil supplementation for 3 months significantly reduced tender joint count (rate difference [RD] [95% CI] = -2.9 [-3.8 to -2.1] [p = 0.001]) and morning stiffness (RD [95% CI] = -25.9 [-44.3 to -7.5] [p < 0.01]) as compared with heterogeneous dietary control oils. The re-analysis of the primary data confirmed a significant reduction in tender joint count (p = 0.001) and in morning stiffness (p < 0.02) in the parallel analysis that ignored interaction terms. The analyses that included an interaction term between site and treatment again confirmed a significant reduction in tender joint count. The results for morning stiffness were similar to the meta-analysis, but did not quite reach statistical significance (p = 0.052-0.083). The relative improvements in the other outcome variables did not reach statistical significance. Use of fish oil improved the number of tender joints and duration of morning stiffness at 3 months as analyzed by both meta- and mega-analysis. The fuller mega-analysis confirmed the results of the meta-analysis. The advantages of mega-analysis were as follows: (1) the ability to analyze the homogeneity of the patient populations, (2) the ability to make clinically sensible adjustments in the form of the comparison, and (3) the ability to examine subsets of the data.  相似文献

Previous work suggests that cod liver oil helps to protect the microcirculation from the consequence of thromboembolic events. The possibility that altered synthesis of thromboxane A2 accounts for the protective effects seen with cod liver oil was investigated in the present study. This was done using the combined thromboxane A2 synthetase inhibitor and thromboxane A2-prostaglandin H2 receptor blocker R68070 (Ridogrel). A standardized microvascular injury was inflicted on the right iliac artery of the rat to generate emboli. The downstream cremaster muscle was used to visualize the passage of the ensuing emboli and to assess the effects of this arterial injury on capillary perfusion and arteriole diameters. The number of visible emboli was not changed by either cod liver oil diet or Ridogrel administration. However, capillary perfusion was preserved by using cod liver oil (n = 7) and was significantly increased by using Ridogrel (n = 7) in comparison with untreated controls (n = 7) in which capillary perfusion was decreased because of the emboli. The administration of Ridogrel to cod liver oil-treated animals (n = 7) provided no additive benefit. The percentage change in A-2 vessel diameters in cod liver oil-treated (n = 7) animals was no different from the control group (n = 7). Ridogrel (n = 7), on the other hand, produced a significant increase in A-3 vessel (n = 21) diameters, but its effects were comparatively less in the cod liver oil-treated animals (n = 7). The formation of platelet aggregates (emboli) appears relatively independent of thromboxane A2 in the rat. Ridogrel is very effective in protecting the microcirculation, and these effects appear to be mediated by A-3 vasodilatation, which, therefore, is at least partially thromboxane A2-dependent. The positive effects of cod liver oil may be mediated by a mechanism that reduces thromboxane A2 synthesis, but further studies are necessary.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Experimental and epidemiologic investigations suggest that alpha-tocopherol (the most prevalent chemical form of vitamin E found in vegetable oils, seeds, grains, nuts, and other foods) and beta-carotene (a plant pigment and major precursor of vitamin A found in many yellow, orange, and dark-green, leafy vegetables and some fruit) might reduce the risk of cancer, particularly lung cancer. The initial findings of the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study (ATBC Study) indicated, however, that lung cancer incidence was increased among participants who received beta-carotene as a supplement. Similar results were recently reported by the Beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET), which tested a combination of beta-carotene and vitamin A. PURPOSE: We examined the effects of alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene supplementation on the incidence of lung cancer across subgroups of participants in the ATBC Study defined by base-line characteristics (e.g., age, number of cigarettes smoked, dietary or serum vitamin status, and alcohol consumption), by study compliance, and in relation to clinical factors, such as disease stage and histologic type. Our primary purpose was to determine whether the pattern of intervention effects across subgroups could facilitate further interpretation of the main ATBC Study results and shed light on potential mechanisms of action and relevance to other populations. METHODS: A total of 29,133 men aged 50-69 years who smoked five or more cigarettes daily were randomly assigned to receive alpha-tocopherol (50 mg), beta-carotene (20 mg), alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene, or a placebo daily for 5-8 years (median, 6.1 years). Data regarding smoking and other risk factors for lung cancer and dietary factors were obtained at study entry, along with measurements of serum levels of alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene. Incident cases of lung cancer (n = 894) were identified through the Finnish Cancer Registry and death certificates. Each lung cancer diagnosis was independently confirmed, and histology or cytology was available for 94% of the cases. Intervention effects were evaluated by use of survival analysis and proportional hazards models. All P values were derived from two-sided statistical tests. RESULTS: No overall effect was observed for lung cancer from alpha-tocopherol supplementation (relative risk [RR] = 0.99; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.87-1.13; P = .86, logrank test). beta-Carotene supplementation was associated with increased lung cancer risk (RR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.02-1.33; P = .02, logrank test). The beta-carotene effect appeared stronger, but not substantially different, in participants who smoked at least 20 cigarettes daily (RR = 1.25; 95% CI = 1.07-1.46) compared with those who smoked five to 19 cigarettes daily (RR = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.76-1.23) and in those with a higher alcohol intake (> or = 11 g of ethanol/day [just under one drink per day]; RR = 1.35; 95% CI = 1.01-1.81) compared with those with a lower intake (RR = 1.03; 95% CI = 0.85-1.24). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with alpha-tocopherol or beta-carotene does not prevent lung cancer in older men who smoke. beta-Carotene supplementation at pharmacologic levels may modestly increase lung cancer incidence in cigarette smokers, and this effect may be associated with heavier smoking and higher alcohol intake. IMPLICATIONS: While the most direct way to reduce lung cancer risk is not to smoke tobacco, smokers should avoid high-dose beta-carotene supplementation.  相似文献

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) is less efficiently accumulated in tissue triacylglycerols (TAGs) during fish oil feeding than docosahexaneoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) or docosapentaenoic acid (DPA, 22:5n-3), and EPA is preferentially released from the TAG of isolated adipocytes in vitro and adipose tissue in vivo during fasting compared with DHA or DPA. It is not known if this preferential release occurs in vivo under nonfasting conditions or if it is limited to adipose tissue. Accordingly, we have carried out experiments to study the turnover of EPA, DHA, and DPA in the TAG of adipose tissue, liver, and skeletal muscle. Weanling rats were fed diets containing fish oil for 6 weeks and then switched to diets containing only corn oil as the dietary fat for 8 weeks. The fatty acid composition and mass in epididymal fat pads, omental fat, liver, and soleus muscle TAGs were determined weekly for the first 10 weeks and at weeks 12 and 14. Subsequent to the change to the corn oil diet, EPA (20:5n-3), DPA (22:5n-3), and DHA (22:6n-3), which had accumulated during fish oil feeding, were lost from the tissue TAG pools of each tissue examined. After 8 weeks on the corn oil diet, less than 10% of the accumulated EPA, DPA, and DHA remained in the liver and muscle. The loss of EPA, DPA, and DHA from epididymal fat pad was slower. In each tissue, EPA was lost more rapidly than DPA or DHA. This selective loss of EPA relative to DHA or DPA may explain the previously reported underrepresentation of EPA compared with DHA or DPA in tissue TAG.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To test whether renal lipomatosis, an accretion of fat in the renal sinus associated with chronic renal infections, abscesses and calculi, can also be caused by rapid weight gain. DESIGN: New Zealand white rabbits were fed either standard rabbit chow (n = 24) or chow fortified with 10% corn oil plus 5% lard (n = 25) for 8-12 weeks. MEASUREMENTS: The rabbits and constituent tissues were weighed initially, after drying and after organic extractions. Renal tissue cholesterol and triglycerides were measured chemically. RESULTS: Rabbits made obese by increased fat intake were 1.8 kg heavier than controls (5.5 +/- 0.3 kg vs 3.7 +/- 0.2; n = 24,25), had 1.54 kg more body fat (1.90 +/- 0.25 vs 0.36 +/- 0.11 kg/rabbit; n = 10,9), and had a mean arterial blood pressure that was 9.2 mm Hg greater than controls (95.1 +/- 8.5 vs 85.9 +/- 5.6 mm Hg; n = 23,24). Individual organs grew in mass (lung, 15%; gastrocnemius, 17%; liver, 27%; kidney, 30%) and their parenchyma gained extractable lipids (lung, 5.5 mg/g tissue; gastrocnemius, 9.6 mg/g tissue; liver, 17.9 mg/g tissue). Total renal triglycerides were increased 2.1 fold, from 103 +/- 36 to 219 +/- 59 mg/kidney (n = 8,8), compared to the 5.3 fold increase in whole body fat. Renal cholesterol was increased 1.7 fold, from 7.5 +/- 1.1 to 12.7 +/- 2.9 mg/kidney, (n = 8,8). Within experimental error, the sum of the total renal triglycerides plus the total renal cholesterol equaled the net fat extracted from the renal sinus alone: 95 +/- 29 mg/kidney in lean rabbits and 253 +/- 71 mg/kidney in obese (n = 17,17). CONCLUSION: Obesity alone can cause renal lipomatosis. This increased volume of anatomically localized fat may be sufficient to externally compress renal veins and lymphatics, thus altering renal hemodynamic behavior.  相似文献

Based on previous in vitro results that showed reduced biohydrogenation of oleamide by ruminal microbes, this study was conducted to determine whether the addition of oleamide to the diets of dairy cows would enhance the C18:1 concentration in milk. Nine first lactation Holstein cows were fed three diets in a 3 x 3 Latin square replicated three times. Each period lasted 3 wk. The total mixed diets consisted of 42% corn silage and 58% concentrate (dry matter basis) with either no added fat (control), 3.5% high oleic canola oil, or 3.5% oleamide. Dry matter intake was reduced when oleamide was added to the diet but not when canola oil was added. Milk yields were the same for cows fed all three diets. Canola oil reduced fat-corrected milk yield and milk fat concentration, but these were not affected by oleamide. Milk protein concentration was lower for cows fed oleamide than for cows fed canola oil. Milk C18:1 averaged 23.16% of total fatty acids for cows fed the control diet and increased to 35.13% when canola oil was fed. Oleamide further increased C18:1 to 48.16% of total fatty acids in milk. All fatty acids with > or = 16 carbon chain length were reduced by oleamide. Oleamide was more effective than was canola oil in this study at increasing the oleic acid content of bovine milk. Oleamide reduced dietary intake when added at 3.5% of the dietary dry matter but still had no effect on milk yield or milk composition.  相似文献

Forty Holstein cows averaging 85 +/- 50 d in milk were assigned to five dietary treatments for 56 d to determine the effects of ruminal starch degradability and supplemental fat on milk yield and composition and nutrient digestibilities. Treatments were 1) dry-rolled sorghum, no added fat; 2) dry-rolled sorghum plus 2.5% prilled fatty acids; 3) steam-flaked sorghum, no added fat; 4) steam-flaked sorghum plus 2.5% prilled fatty acids; and 5) steam-flaked sorghum plus 5% prilled fatty acids. Fat supplementation at 2.5 and 5% increased the content of fatty acids in diets from 3.0 to 5.4 and 7.7%, respectively. Milk yield was increased 2.0 kg/d when steam-flaked sorghum plus 0 or 2.5% added fat was fed and was 2.4 kg/d higher when prilled fatty acids were fed at 2.5 versus 0%. Cows fed supplemental fat at 5% did not increase milk yield over that of cows fed no added fat. For cows fed 2.5% fat, steam-flaking decreased dry matter intake 12% and increased efficiency of conversion of feed to milk 11%. Milk composition was unaffected by treatments, except that lactose was depressed by fat supplementation. Milk protein yield and efficiency of conversion of dietary protein to milk protein were increased when steam-flaked sorghum was fed. Starch digestibilities were increased from 92.6 to 98.2% when sorghum was steam-flaked compared with dry-rolled and fat supplementation tended to decrease digestibility of neutral detergent fiber. Steam-flaking tended to improve, and the addition of 2.5% fat did improve, the lactational performances of the cows. These effects appeared additive, but 5% fat appeared to be excessive.  相似文献
