A gain clamped long wavelength band erbium-doped fibre amplifier (L-band EDFA) based on a ring laser cavity is demonstrated using a fibre Bragg grating (FBG) at the output end of the amplifier. This new design provides a good gain clamping as well as a gain flattening. The gain is clamped at 16.9 dB with gain variation of less than 0.1 dB from input signal power of -40 to -18 dBm by setting the VOA=5 dB. Also, the amplifier has the flattest gain spectrum at VOA=5. The gain variation is less than 1.0 dB within the wavelength range from 1570 to 1600 nm. This gain clamped amplifier also can support a 12 channel WDM system. 相似文献

根据光纤包层中的倏逝场机制,将具有热光效应的聚合物材料直接覆盖在侧边抛磨光纤上,进行了全光纤热光型可变光衰减器(VOA)的研究.根据理论分析,确定了在侧边抛磨光纤的抛磨区上覆盖材料的折射率与纤芯中光衰减量之间的关系,为选择适当折射率的热光材料提供依据.设计适当的侧边抛磨区,利用先进的轮式侧边抛磨技术,制备了侧边抛磨光纤,以达到最佳可变光衰减效果.采用螺绕电极和优化封装,制作出性能优良的全光纤热光型可变光衰减器.性能测试表明,器件插入损耗小于0.1 dB,衰减范围为0~80 dB,偏振相关损耗小于0.02 dB,背向反射大于70 dB.该方法制作的全光纤热光型可变光衰减器具有可用电驱动调控、可靠性高等优点. 相似文献

The design and preliminary data of a novel microoptoelectromechanical systems variable optical attenuator (VOA) driven by a pair of V-beam electrothermal actuators is described. This VOA deploys a face-to-face arranged pair of 45/spl deg/ tilted mirrors in front of two coaxially aligned lensed fibers to form retro-reflection planar light path for attenuation. The initial insertion loss is 0.7 dB at 1550 nm and the maximum dynamic range of attenuation is 50 dB, respectively. The polarization-dependent loss is measured as 0.15 dB at 20-dB attenuation. The dynamic attenuation deviation is less than /spl plusmn/0.36 dB at 20-dB attenuation with respect to 20-G shock of periodical mechanical vibration at 1 K Hz, in which it complies with requirements of the Telcordia GR1221 regulations. 相似文献

A plastic surface-relief grating as a wavelength division multiplexer is designed and fabricated with the conventional mould pressing technique using the transmission-type fused quartz phase grating as mask pattern and polycarbonate as basal material.The experiment results show that in an optimizing process,the plastic surface-relief grating has the highest firstorder diffraction efficiency under adequate groove depth and incident angle,and can be used as the best optical path for wavelength division multiplexing(WDM).We also establish the experiment setup for testing the WDM performance of the plastic surface-relief grating based wavelength division multiplexer.The results show that the proposed wavelength division multiplexer has the high-stability temperature characteristics,the low insertion loss of less than 5 dB,the large isolation of greater than 20 dB,the low polarization-dependent loss(PDL) of less than 0.4 dB and the relatively steep pass-band characteristics.It is a WDM device with good performance,which can be applied in short distance communication. 相似文献

A photonic crystal fiber (PCF) can realize a flat dispersion over a wide wavelength range that cannot be realized with a conventional single-mode fiber. However, the confinement loss tends to increase in a conventional dispersion-flattened PCF (DF-PCF) that has uniform air holes. In this paper, a novel PCF that has two cladding layers with different effective indices is proposed. The authors numerically show that the proposed PCF can achieve an ultralow dispersion variation of less than 0.8 ps/nm/spl middot/km in all telecommunication bands, with both a large effective area greater than 100 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ and a low confinement loss less than 0.01 dB/km. 相似文献

For optical clock recovery of nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) signals of more than 40 Gb/s, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple clock recovery scheme through beating process between the carrier frequency component and one of the clock frequency components in modulated NRZ signals. The proposed scheme consists of a circulator, a variable optical attenuator (VOA), and two fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filters. With FBG filters and a VOA, the proposed scheme can equalize the amplitudes of two extracted frequency components for a maximum clock-to-noise ratio (CNR). Through this scheme, we have squared the adjustment range of the VOA and achieved an enhanced CNR of more than 15 dB before the receiver in experiment. Bit error rate (BER) curves for back-to-back and 80 km transmissions showed that BERs of less than 10−11 can be obtained without error floors for both cases. We expect that the proposed scheme can operate as an efficient clock extraction system for high-speed optical communications. 相似文献

Fluorinated polyimide waveguides with low polarization dependent loss (PDL) and thermooptic (TO) switches made from them were demonstrated. The waveguides showed loss of less than 0.3 dB/cm at the wavelength of 1.3 μm and 0.6 dB/cm at 1.55 μm for both TE and TM polarizations. The PDL's were less than 0.1 dB/cm. Extinction ratios of Y-branching-type TO switches fabricated from these waveguides were larger than 20 dB when over 160 mW of electric power was applied at 1.3 μm, and over 150 mW at 1.55 μm. A variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on a metal-defined polymeric optical waveguide has been demonstrated for the first time. The metal film stressor deposited on top of the upper cladding layer not only produces the refractive index change within the core layer, but also acts as a thin-film heater allowing thermal tuning of the optical power within a metal-defined optical waveguide. Fabricated devices exhibit greater than 25 dB of optical attenuation with an applied electrical current of /spl sim/40 mA at 1550-nm wavelength. The switching speed of the VOA exhibits 800 /spl mu/s of rising and 720 /spl mu/s of falling time. 相似文献

A low loss wavelength-selective switch is proposed and demonstrated. The switch has a 1/spl times/4 transversal filter configuration that includes arrayed waveguide gratings and thermooptic phase shifters, and can route arbitrary wavelength input light to arbitrary outputs with no loss variation. We investigated an electroabsorptive n-i-p-i waveguide modulator based on the Franz-Keldysh effect (FKE), which is especially designed to operate with very low voltage swings over a broad wavelength range. In order to contact the n-i-p-i structure, the layer sequence and annealing conditions of Au-Zn-Au and Ni-Ge-Au contacts were optimized with respect to good selectivity and low contact resistance. The transmission measurements yield a contrast ratio of 30 dB, achieved with a voltage swing less than 1.5 V at a wavelength of 910 /spl mu/m with a 900-/spl mu/m-long waveguide modulator. Contrast ratios of /spl ges/20 dB have been obtained within the whole spectral range from 910 nm to 940 mm with a voltage swing less than 2 V. The absorption loss due to the FKE is below 3 dB. 相似文献

A Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer design is presented for application to wavelength-division multiplexed/frequency division multiplexed (WDM/FDM) systems. A variety of integrated-optic devices with low loss and low crosstalk, using silica-based waveguides, are demonstrated. MZ interferometers operate as multi/demultiplexers or frequency-selection switches. The channel spacing is determined by the waveguide arm length difference, and a spacing range of 1 GHz to 36 THz, corresponding to a wavelength spacing of 0.008-250 nm, is achieved. The devices for the WDM region have low fiber-to-fiber loss of 0.5 dB, and the devices for the FDM region have higher losses of 2-5 dB. Crosstalk of less than -15 dB was obtained for all the devices. A 5-GHz-spaced 16-channel frequency selection switch and a 10-GHz-spaced eight-channel multi/demultiplexer were also fabricated with a total loss of 5 dB and total crosstalk of -10 dB or less 相似文献

A novel variable optical attenuator (VOA) is introduced that can provide high dynamic range and high-resolution all at fast submicrosecond speeds. The VOA design exploits an in-line one-to-one imaging optical architecture operating with Bragg-mode acoustooptic Bragg cells. Optical attenuation is achieved via frequency and drive voltage control of the Bragg cells, leading to flexible and precise attenuation-level settings. VOA demonstrated a 45-dB dynamic range with a 175-ns switching time. Other measured parameters include 1.14-dB/MHz resolution, 1.56-dB polarization dependent loss, and an excess loss of 3.55 dB 相似文献
