A transient short-hot-wire technique has been successfully used to measure the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of molten salts (NaNO3, Li2CO3/K2CO3, and Li2CO3/Na2CO3) which are highly corrosive. This method was developed from the hot-wire technique and is based on two-dimensional numerical solutions of unsteady heat conduction from a short wire with the same length-to-diameter ratio and boundary conditions as those used in the actual experiments. In the present study, the wires are coated with a pure Al2O3 thin film by using a sputtering apparatus. The length and radius of the hot wire and the resistance ratio of the lead terminals and the entire probe are calibrated using water and toluene with known thermophysical properties. Using such a calibrated probe, the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of molten nitrate are measured within errors of 3 and 20%, respectively. Also, the thermal conductivity of the molten carbonates can be measured within an error of 5%, although the thermal diffusivity can be measured within an error of 50%.  相似文献

In recent years, both experimental and theoretical research on energy transport in deforming polymeric materials has increased. Theoretical results indicate that the thermal conductivity in such systems is anisotropic, and support, analogous to the well-known stress-optic rule, the validity of a stress-thermal rule where the thermal conductivity and stress tensors are linearly related. In this study a method to measure the thermal diffusivity in deforming polymers has been developed. The method is based on an optical technique known as forced Rayleigh scattering. This sensitive and non invasive technique is shown to be capable of quantitative measurements of anisotropic thermal diffusivity in both static and dynamic (relaxing) polymers subjected to deformations. Results have been obtained for a polymer melt in step-shear strain flows and a cross-linked elastomer in uniaxial extension. Thermal diffusivity data are complemented by measurements of stress and birefringence so that evaluations of the stress-optic and stress-thermal rules can be made. Results show that the thermal diffusivity is enhanced in the flow (or stretch) direction compared to the equilibrium value and that the stress-thermal rule is valid for the modest deformations achieved in this study.  相似文献

This paper presents new absolute measurements for the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of gaseous argon obtained with a transient hot-wire instrument. Six isotherms were measured in the supercritical dense gas at temperatures between 296 and 423 K and pressures up to 61 MPa. A new analysis for the influence of temperature-dependent properties and residual bridge unbalance is used to obtain the thermal conductivity with an uncertainty of less than 1% and the thermal diffusivity with an uncertainty of less than 4%. Isobaric heat capacity results were derived from measured values of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity using a density calculated from an equation of state. The heat capacities presented here have a nominal uncertainty of 4% and demonstrate that this property can be obtained successfully with the transient hot wire technique over a wide range of fluid states. The technique will be useful when applied to fluids which lack specific heat data.  相似文献

This paper discusses the thermal conduction anisotropy in polymers by reviewing currently available theories and experimental methods for studying oriented polymers. The anisotropic thermal conductivity and diffusivity of oriented polymers originate from the difference between the thermal energy transport mechanisms parallel and perpendicular to their molecules. Recent progress in the development of experimental techniques for studying the thermal conduction anisotropy of polymer films with thicknesses near 1 m is discussed in connection with modern microelectronics applications. The data obtained from these techniques are expected to serve for developing sophisticated thermal conduction theories that account for the polymer anisotropy and for performing precise thermal design of organic electronic devices that incorporate highly oriented polymer structures.  相似文献

This is a companion to an earlier paper (on molten alkali metal chlorides) which gives experimental results for the thermal diffusivity of four molten alkali metal bromides: NaBr, KBr, RbBr, and CsBr. The measurements were performed with a forced Rayleigh scattering instrument at temperatures up to 1326 K. The overall uncertainty in the measured thermal diffusivity is estimated to be ±3 to ±11%, depending on the measured salts. The results converted to thermal conductivity show one of the smallest values among other earlier experimental data obtained mainly by the steady-state methods. It is also found that the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity is weakly negative.  相似文献

In the present study, the thermal and electrical properties of packed carbon nanofibers (P-CNFs) have been investigated. A short-hot-wire (SHW) technique was applied to determine simultaneously the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of P-CNFs. In SHW measurements, a platinum wire coated with an alumina layer served as both the heating source and the thermometric sensor. A curve fitting method by matching the experimental data and numerical simulated values was proposed for determining the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of P-CNFs with different packed densities. The electrical conductivities were measured by a four-terminal method where a special vessel with electrodes with circular plates was used. The results indicated that the electrical conductivity increases linearly with an increase in packed density. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity also increase with an increase in packed density. The relation between the thermal conductivity and the electrical conductivity has been shown to be approximately linear. The SHW technique combined with the curve fitting method would be applicable to many kinds of materials.Paper presented at the Seventh Asian Thermophysical Properties Conference, August 23–28, 2004, Hefei and Huangshan, Anhui, P. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of liquid n-pentane have been measured over the temperature range from 293 to 428 K at pressures from 3.5 to 35 MPa using a transient hot-wire instrument. It was determined that the results were influenced by fluid thermal radiation, and a new expression for this effect is presented. The uncertainty of the experimental results is estimated to be better than ±0.5% for thermal conductivity and ±2% for thermal diffusivity. The results, corrected for fluid thermal radiation, are correlated as functions of temperature and density with a maximum uncertainty of ±2% for thermal conductivity and ±4% for thermal diffusivity. Derived values of the isobaric specific heat are also given.  相似文献

A dilatometric method is presented, suitable to obtain both thermal diffusivity and conductivity of low-conducting solids with a low expansion coefficient. The repeatibility of the measurements of thermal conductivity is 3%, whereas that for diffusivity is 5 %. Data for fused silica at room temperature are given, consistent with those reported in the literature. Since the method is based on detecting the thermal expansion of a copper disk in thermal contact with the specimen, its range of applicability is linked to the sensitivity by which the dilation of copper can be measured: no difficulty arises between liquid nitrogen and 1000°C.  相似文献

This paper reports measurements of the effective thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of various nanofluids using the transient short-hot-wire technique. To remove the influences of the static charge and electrical conductance of the nanoparticles on measurement accuracy, the short-hot-wire probes are carefully coated with a pure Al2O3 thin film. Using distilled water and toluene as standard liquids of known thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, the length and radius of the hot wire and the thickness of the Al2O3 film are calibrated before and after application of the coating. The electrical leakage of the short-hot-wire probes is frequently checked, and only those probes that are coated well are used for measurements. In the present study, the effective thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities of Al2O3/water, ZrO2/water, TiO2/water, and CuO/water nanofluids are measured and the effects of the volume fractions and thermal conductivities of nanoparticles and temperature are clarified. The average diameters of Al2O3, ZrO2, TiO2, and CuO particles are 20, 20, 40, and 33 nm, respectively. The uncertainty of the present measurements is estimated to be within 1% for the thermal conductivity and 5% for the thermal diffusivity. The measured results demonstrate that the effective thermal conductivities of the nanofluids show no anomalous enhancement and can be predicted accurately by the model equation of Hamilton and Crosser, when the spherical nanoparticles are dispersed into fluids.  相似文献

This paper presents absolute measurements for the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of toluene obtained with a transient hot-wire instrument employing coated wires over the density interval of 735 to 870 kgm–3. A new expression for the influence of the wire coating is presented, and an examination of the importance of a nonuniform wire radius is verified with measurements on argon from 296 to 323 K at pressures to 61 MPa. Four isotherms were measured in toluene between 296 and 423 K at pressures to 35 MPa. The measurements have an uncertainty of less than ±0.5% for thermal conductivity and ±2% for thermal diffusivity. Isobaric heat capacity results, derived from the measured values of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, using a density determined from an equation of state, have an uncertainty of ±3% after taking into account the uncertainty of the applied equation of state. The measurements demonstrate that isobaric specific heat determinations can be obtained successfully with the transient hot wire technique over a wide range of fluid states provided density values are available.  相似文献

As a series of experimental determinations of the thermal diffusivity of molten alkali halides, this paper describes measurements on five molten alkali metal chlorides (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, RbCl, and CsCl) in the temperature range up to 1440 K by the forced Rayleigh scattering method. K2Cr2O7 is employed as a dye substance to color the transparent molten salts. The accuracy is estimated to be ± 4 to ±11 % depending on the measured salts. In comparison with the present results converted into thermal conductivity, most of the previous experimental data obtained by steady-state methods show larger values, up to about five times, which may be due to the systematic error caused by the presence of convection and radiation. It is found that the thermal conductivity of these series of molten alkali metal chlorides decreases with increasing molecular weight, and their temperature coefficients are weakly negative.  相似文献

Evaluation of the radiative and conductive heat loss from a molten metal sample to the cell has been made in order to obtain accurate thermal diffusivities of molten metals at high temperature with a laser flash method. The results suggest that thermal diffusivity values of molten nickel can be determined in the temperature range from 1728 to 1928 K with an uncertainty of ±3% in comparison with case considering only the effect of radiative heat loss. The usefulness of a cell for a laser flash method has been confirmed by applying simulated results to evaluate the heat leakage in the thermal diffusivity measurement of molten metals.  相似文献

This paper describes measurement of the thermal diffusivity of molten KCl in the temperature range from 804 to 1030°C by the forced Rayleigh scattering method. In this contact-free optical measuring technique for the thermal diffusivity of liquids, a sample needs to be colored by the admixture of a dye for suitable absorption of a heating laser beam. The dye substances employed are CoCl2 and NiCl2, which were chosen through the experimental evaluation. The accuracy is estimated to be ±7% for molten KCl colored with NiCl2. The results converted to thermal conductivity show one of the smallest values among other previous data; the difference is a factor of four. The present study demonstrates the promising applicability of the forced Rayleigh scattering method to the measurement of high-temperature molten salts, which has never be attained by other conventional methods.Paper presented at the Tenth Symposium on Thermophysical Properties, June 20–23, 1988, Gaithersburg, Maryland, U.S.A.  相似文献

Thermal conductivity is a very basic property that determines how fast a material conducts heat, which plays an important and sometimes a dominant role in many fields. However, because materials with phase transitions have been widely used recently, understanding and measuring temperature‐dependent thermal conductivity during phase transitions are important and sometimes even questionable. Here, the thermal transport equation is corrected by including heat absorption due to phase transitions to reveal how a phase transition affects the measured thermal conductivity. In addition to the enhanced heat capacity that is well known, it is found that thermal diffusivity can be abnormally lowered from the true value, which is also dependent on the speed of phase transitions. The extraction of the true thermal conductivity requires removing the contributions from both altered heat capacity and thermal diffusivity during phase transitions, which is well demonstrated in four selected kinds of phase transition materials (Cu2Se, Cu2S, Ag2S, and Ag2Se) in experiment. This study also explains the lowered abnormal thermal diffusivity during phase transitions in other materials and thus provides a novel strategy to engineer thermal conductivity for various applications.  相似文献

The present paper describes the status of a number of studies involving NPL which are directed towards development of internationally accepted reference materials to serve different requirements. These include: (1) thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity measurements on candidate molten metal reference materials; (2) co-operative flash diffusivity measurements on glassy carbon, a dense fine grain alumina, and other ceramics; (3) inter-European studies, one using different steady-state and transient methods to evaluate the properties of a high temperature ceramic and the other using the guarded hot plate method to produce a high temperature thermal insulation reference; (4) a six-laboratory European program to certify a replacement European thermal insulation reference material for use at room temperature; and (5) an intercomparison between standards organizations in five countries on the current reference materials supplied in each country or geographical area. Brief mention is made concerning other on-going and planned work together with recommendations for materials to address additional needs.  相似文献

Low-pressure thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity measurements are reported for argon and nitrogen in the temperature range from 295 to 350 K at pressures from 0.34 to 6.9 MPa using an absolute transient hot-wire instrument. Thermal conductivity measurements were also made with the same instrument in its steady-state mode of operation. The measurements are estimated to have an uncertainty of 1% for the transient thermal conductivity, 3% for the steady-state thermal conductivity, and 4% for thermal diffusivity. The values of isobaric specific heat, derived from the measured thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, are considered accurate to 5% although this is dependent upon the uncertainty of the equation of state utilized.Paper presented at the Sixteenth European Conference on Thermophysical Properties, September 1–4, 2002, London, United Kingdom  相似文献

The experimental determination of thermophysical properties has been greatly improved by the introduction of laser technology. The laser beam is used for sensing and also for heating (or exciting) the specimen. The advantage of using a laser beam is most strongly felt in the measurement of the thermal conductivity or the thermal diffusivity, which are some of the most difficult properties to measure. Interesting features of new techniques for investigating various aspects of thermal conductivity in fluids and solids are reviewed. An optical method, the so-called forced Rayleigh scattering method, or the laser-induced optical-grating method, has been developed and used extensively by the present author's group. The method is a high-speed remote-sensing method which can also quantitatively detect anisotropy, namely, direction dependence of heat conduction in the material. It was used for determination of the thermal diffusivity and its anisotropic behavior for high-temperature materials such as molten salts, liquid crystals, extended polymer samples, and flowing polymer melts under shear. Interesting applications of the method were demonstrated also for thermal diffusivity mapping and microscale measurement.Invited paper presented at the Twelfth symposium on Thermophysical Properties, June 19–24, 1994, Boulder, Colorado, U.S.A.  相似文献

Using photo acoustic technique, the thermal properties of CdS thin films grown by spray pyrolysis are measured. Thermal diffusivity and conductivity in these films decrease at least two orders compared with bulk. These results are compared with our study on nano CdS and the other available literature. The comparison is good. The dependence of thermal diffusivity on the thickness of the layer or the size of the particles on the glass substrate are analysed from the present measurement and discussed. The dependence of thermal diffusivity on the thickness of the layer on the glass substrate is discussed.  相似文献

A double specimen technique is used in measuring the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of low thermal conductivity materials. In this technique good thermal contact is maintained between the heat source and sink and two geometrically similar specimens. A thin-copper heater plate is compressed between the two specimens and the temperature difference is measured between the heat source and the temperature controlled heat sink. Thermal conductivity is determined at steady state conditions by the differential method while the diffusivity is determined from transient measurements combined with an analytical solution to the one dimensional solution of the diffusion equation.  相似文献
