Rotational 3-breed crossbred cows of Montbéliarde, Viking Red, and Holstein (CB) were compared with Holstein (HO) cows for alternative measures of feed efficiency as well as income over feed cost (IOFC) and residual feed intake (RFI) during the first 150 d of first, second, and third lactations. Primiparous and multiparous CB (n = 63 and n = 43, respectively) and HO (n = 60 and n = 37, respectively) cows were fed the same total mixed ration twice daily with refusals weighed once daily. Feed was analyzed for dry matter content, net energy for lactation, and crude protein content. Body weight (BW) was recorded twice weekly. Daily production of milk, fat, and protein were estimated from monthly test days with best prediction. Measures of efficiency from 4 to 150 d in milk (DIM) were feed conversion efficiency (FCE), defined as fat plus protein production (kg) per kilogram of dry matter intake (DMI); ECM/DMI, defined as kilograms of energy-corrected milk (ECM) per kilogram of DMI; net energy for lactation efficiency (NELE), defined as ECM (kg) per megacalorie of net energy for lactation intake; crude protein efficiency (CPE), defined as true protein production (kg) per kilogram of crude protein intake; and DMI/BW, defined as DMI (kg) per kilogram of BW. The IOFC was defined as revenue from fat plus protein production minus feed cost. The RFI from 4 to 150 DIM for each lactation was the residual error remaining from regression of DMI on milk energy output (Mcal), metabolic BW, and energy required for change in BW (Mcal). Statistical analysis of measures of feed efficiency and RFI for primiparous cows included the fixed effects of year of calving and breed group. For multiparous cows, statistical analysis included breed as a fixed effect and cow as a repeated effect nested within breed group. Primiparous CB cows had higher means for FCE (+5.5%), ECM/DMI (+4.0%), NELE (+4.0%), and CPE (+5.2%) and a lower mean DMI/BW (–5.3%) than primiparous HO cows. Primiparous CB cows ($875) also had higher mean IOFC than primiparous HO cows ($825). In addition, mean RFI from 4 to 150 DIM was significantly lower (more desirable) for primiparous CB cows than HO cows. Likewise, multiparous CB cows had higher means for FCE (+8.2%), ECM/DMI (+5.9%), NELE (+5.8%), and CPE (+8.1%) and a lower mean for DMI/BW (–4.8%) than multiparous HO cows. Multiparous CB cows ($1,296) also had a higher mean for IOFC than multiparous HO cows ($1,208) and a lower mean for RFI from 4 to 150 DIM than HO cows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare 3-breed rotational crossbred (CB) cows of the Montbéliarde, Viking Red, and Holstein (HO) breeds with HO cows fed 2 alternative diets for dry matter intake (DMI), fat plus protein production (CFP), body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), feed efficiency, and residual feed intake (RFI) from 46 to 150 days in milk (DIM) during first lactation. The CB cows (n = 17) and HO cows (n = 19) calved from September 2019 to March 2020. Cows were fed either a traditional total mixed ration diet (TRAD) or a higher fiber, lower starch total mixed ration diet (HFLS). The HFLS had 21% more corn silage, 47% more alfalfa hay, 44% less corn grain, and 43% less corn gluten feed than the TRAD. The 2 diets were analyzed for dry matter content, crude protein, forage digestibility, starch, and net energy for lactation. The BW and BCS were recorded once weekly. Daily milk, fat, and protein production were estimated from twice monthly milk recording with random regression. Measures of efficiency were CFP per kilogram of DMI and DMI per kilogram of BW. The RFI from 46 to 150 DIM was the residual error from regression of DMI on milk energy, metabolic BW, and the energy required for change in BW. Statistical analysis of all variables included the fixed effects of diet, breed group, and the interaction of diet and breed group. The CB cows fed HFLS had less DMI (?12%) and lower DMI/BW (?14%) compared with the HO cows fed TRAD. For CFP, CB and HO cows were not different when fed TRAD or HFLS. Furthermore, the CB cows fed HFLS had higher BW (+50 kg) compared with HO cows fed HFLS. The CB cows fed TRAD had higher BCS than HO cows fed TRAD and HO cows fed HFLS (+0.46 and +0.62, respectively). The HO cows fed TRAD had more DMI (+14%) and lower CFP per kilogram of DMI (?12%) compared with the HO cows fed HFLS. In addition, mean RFI from 46 to 150 DIM was lower and more desirable for CB cows fed HFLS (?120.0 kg) compared with HO cows fed TRAD (85.3 kg). Dairy producers may feed either TRAD or HFLS to CB cows without loss of CFP.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the feasibility of measuring feed intake in commercial tie-stall dairies and infer genetic parameters of feed intake, yield, somatic cell score, milk urea nitrogen, body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), and linear type traits of Holstein cows. Feed intake, BW, and BCS were measured on 970 cows in 11 Pennsylvania tie-stall herds. Historical test-day data from these cows and 739 herdmates who were contemporaries during earlier lactations were also included. Feed intake was measured by researchers once per month over a 24-h period within 7 d of 6 consecutive Dairy Herd Information test days. Feed samples from each farm were collected monthly on the same day that feed intake was measured and were used to calculate intakes of dry matter, crude protein, and net energy of lactation. Test-day records were analyzed with multiple-trait animal models, and 305-d fat-corrected milk yield, dry matter intake, crude protein intake, net energy of lactation intake, average BW, and average BCS were derived from the test-day models. The 305-d traits were also analyzed with multiple-trait animal models that included a prediction of 40-wk dry matter intake derived from National Research Council equations. Heritability estimates for 305-d intake of dry matter, crude protein, and net energy of lactation ranged from 0.15 to 0.18. Genetic correlations of predicted dry matter intake with 305-d dry matter, crude protein, and net energy of lactation intake were 0.84, 0.90, and 0.94, respectively. Genetic correlations among the 3 intake traits and fat-corrected milk yield, BW, and stature were moderate to high (0.52 to 0.63). Results indicate that feed intake measured in commercial tie-stalls once per month has sufficient accuracy to enable genetic research. High-producing and larger cows were genetically inclined to have higher feed intake. The genetic correlation between observed and predicted intakes was less than unity, indicating potential variation in feed efficiency.  相似文献

Extensive efforts have been made to identify more feed-efficient dairy cows, yet it is unclear how selection for feed efficiency will influence metabolic health. The objectives of this research were to determine the relationships between residual feed intake (RFI), a measure of feed efficiency, body condition score (BCS) change, and hyperketonemia (HYK) incidence. Blood and milk samples were collected twice weekly from cows 5 to 18 d postcalving for a total of 4 samples. Hyperketonemia was diagnosed at a blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ≥1.2 mmol/L and cows were treated upon diagnosis. Dry period, calving, and final blood sampling BCS was recorded. Prior mid-lactation production, body weight, body weight change, and dry matter intake (DMI) data were used to determine RFI phenotype, calculated as the difference between observed DMI and predicted DMI. The maximum BHB concentration (BHBmax) for each cow was used to group cows into HYK or not hyperketonemic. Lactation number, BCS, and RFI data were analyzed with linear and quadratic orthogonal contrasts. Of the 570 cows sampled, 19.7% were diagnosed with HYK. The first positive HYK test occurred at 9 ± 0.9 d postpartum and the average BHB concentration at the first positive HYK test was 1.53 ± 0.14 mmol/L. In the first 30 d postpartum, HYK-positive cows had increased milk yield and fat concentration, decreased milk protein concentration, and decreased somatic cell count. Cows with a dry BCS ≥4.0, or that lost 1 or more BCS unit across the transition to lactation period, had greater BHBmax than cows with lower BCS. Prior-lactation RFI did not alter BHBmax. Avoiding over conditioning of dry cows and subsequent excessive fat mobilization during the transition period may decrease HYK incidence; however, RFI during a prior lactation does not appear to be associated with HYK onset.  相似文献

Objectives were to evaluate the associations between residual dry matter (DM) intake (RFI) and residual N intake (RNI) in early lactation, from 1 to 5 wk postpartum, and in mid lactation, from 9 to 15 wk postpartum, and assess production performance and risk of diseases in cows according to RFI in mid lactation. Data from 4 experiments including 399 Holsteins cows were used in this study. Intakes of DM and N, yields of milk components, body weight, and body condition were evaluated daily or weekly for the first 105 d postpartum. Milk yield by 305 d postpartum was also measured. Incidence of disease was evaluated for the first 90 d postpartum and survival up to 300 d postpartum. Residual DM and N intake were calculated in early and mid lactation as the observed minus the predicted values, which were based on linear models that accounted for major energy or N sinks, including daily milk energy or N output, metabolic body weight, and daily body energy or N changes, and adjusting for parity, season of calving, and treatment within experiment. Cows were ranked by RFI and RNI in mid lactation and categorized into quartiles (Q1 = smallest RFI, to Q4 = largest RFI). Increasing efficiency in mid lactation resulted in linear decreases in RFI (depicted from Q1 to Q4; ?0.93, ?0.05, ?0.04, and 0.98 kg/d), DMI (16.0, 16.9, 17.3, and 18.4 kg/d), net energy for lactation (NEL) intake (26.8, 28.4, 29.0, and 30.8 Mcal/d), and NEL balance (?9.0, ?8.1, ?8.2, and ?5.5 Mcal/d) during early lactation, but no differences were observed in body NEL or N changes or yield of energy-corrected milk in the first 5 wk of lactation. Residual DM intake in mid lactation was associated with RFI (Pearson r = 0.43, and Spearman ρ = 0.32) and RNI (r = 0.44, ρ = 0.36) in early lactation, and with RNI in mid lactation (r = 0.91, ρ = 0.84). Similarly, RNI in mid lactation was associated with RNI in early lactation (r = 0.42, ρ = 0.35). During the first 15 wk postpartum, more efficient cows in mid lactation consumed 3.5 kg/d less DM (Q1 = 19.3 vs. Q4 = 22.8 kg/d) and were more N efficient (Q1 = 31.6 vs. Q4 = 25.8%), at the same time that yields of milk (Q1 = 39.0 vs. Q4 = 39.4 kg/d), energy-corrected milk (Q1 = 38.6 vs. Q4 = 39.3 kg/d), and milk components did not differ compared with the quartile of least efficient cows. Furthermore, RFI in mid lactation was not associated with 305-d milk yield, incidence of diseases in the first 90 d postpartum, or survival by 300 d postpartum. Collectively, rankings of RFI and RNI are associated and repeatable across lactation stages. The most feed-efficient cows were also more N efficient in early and mid lactation. Phenotypic selection of RFI based on measurements in mid lactation is associated with improved efficiency without affecting production or health in dairy cows.  相似文献

Residual feed intake (RFI) is an estimate of animal feed efficiency, calculated as the difference between observed and expected feed intake. Expected intake typically is derived from a multiple regression model of dry matter intake on energy sinks, including maintenance and growth in growing animals, or maintenance, gain in body reserves, and milk production in lactating animals. The best period during the production cycle of a dairy cow to estimate RFI is not clear. Here, we characterized RFI in growing Holstein heifers (RFIGrowth; ∼10 to 14 mo of age; n = 226) and cows throughout a 305-d lactation (RFILac-Full; n = 118). The goals were to characterize relationships between RFI estimated at different production stages of the dairy cow; determine effects of selection for efficiency during growth on subsequent lactation and feed efficiency; and identify the most desirable testing scheme for RFILac-Full. For RFIGrowth, intake was predicted from multiple linear regression of metabolizable energy (ME) intake on mid-test body weight (BW)0.75 and average daily gain (ADG). For RFILac-Full, predicted intake was based on regression of BW0.75, ADG, and energy-corrected milk yield. Mean energy intake of the least and most efficient growing heifers (±0.5 standard deviations from mean RFIGrowth of 0) differed by 3.01 Mcal of ME/d, but the groups showed no difference in mid-test BW or ADG. Phenotypic correlation between RFIGrowth and RFI of heifers estimated in the first 100 d in milk (RFILac100DIM; n = 130) was 0.37. Ranking of these heifers as least (mean + 0.5 standard deviations), middle, or most efficient (mean – 0.5 standard deviations) based on RFIGrowth resulted in 43% maintaining the same ranking by RFILac100DIM. On average, the most efficient heifers ate 3.27 Mcal of ME/d less during the first 100 DIM than the least efficient heifers, but exhibited no differences in average energy-corrected milk yield, ADG, or BW. The correlation between RFILac100DIM and RFILac-Full was 0.72. Thus, RFIGrowth may serve as an indicator trait for RFI during lactation, and selection for heifers exhibiting low RFIGrowth should improve overall herd feed efficiency during lactation. Correlation analysis between RFILac-Full (10 to 305 DIM) and subperiod estimates of RFI during lactation indicated a test period of 64 to 70 d in duration occurring between 150 to 220 DIM provided a reliable approximation (r ≥ 0.90) of RFILac-Full among the test periods evaluated.  相似文献

Dairy cow efficiency is increasingly important for future breeding decisions. The efficiency is determined mostly by dry matter intake (DMI). Reducing DMI seems to increase efficiency if milk yield remains the same, but resulting negative energy balance (EB) may cause health problems, especially in early lactation. Objectives of this study were to examine relationships between DMI and liability to diseases. Therefore, cow effects for DMI and EB were correlated with cow effects for 4 disease categories throughout lactation. Disease categories were mastitis, claw and leg diseases, metabolic diseases, and all diseases. In addition, this study presents relative percentages of diseased cows per days in milk (DIM), repeatability, and cow effect correlations for disease categories across DIM. A total of 1,370 German Holstein (GH) and 287 Fleckvieh (FV) primiparous and multiparous dairy cows from 12 dairy research farms in Germany were observed over a period of 2 yr. Farm staff and veterinarians recorded health data. We modeled health and production data with threshold random regression models and linear random regression models. From DIM 2 to 305 average daily DMI was 22.1 kg/d in GH and 20.2 kg/d in FV. Average weekly EB was 2.8 MJ of NEL/d in GH and 0.6 MJ of NEL/d in FV. Most diseases occurred in the first 20 DIM. Multiparous cows were more susceptible to diseases than primiparous cows. Relative percentages of diseased cows were highest for claw and leg diseases, followed by metabolic diseases and mastitis. Repeatability of disease categories and production traits was moderate to high. Cow effect correlations for disease categories were higher for adjacent lactation stages than for more distant lactation stages. Pearson correlation coefficients between cow effects for DMI, as well as EB, and disease categories were estimated from DIM 2 to 305. Almost all correlations were negative in GH, especially in early lactation. In FV, the course of correlations was similar to GH, but correlations were mostly more negative in early lactation. For the first 20 DIM, correlations ranged from ?0.31 to 0.00 in GH and from ?0.42 to ?0.01 in FV. The results illustrate that future breeding for dairy cow efficiency should focus on DMI and EB in early lactation to avoid health problems.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of selection for feed utilization on associated blood plasma metabolite and hormone traits. Dry matter intake (DMI) was recorded in 970 Holsteins from 11 commercial farms in Pennsylvania and used to derive dry matter efficiency (DME; fat-corrected milk yield/DMI), crude protein efficiency (CPE; protein yield/crude protein intake), and residual feed intake (RFI, defined as actual feed intake minus expected feed intake for maintenance and milk production, based on calculation of DMI adjusted for yield, body weight, and body condition score). Estimated breeding values for the 4 feed utilization traits (DMI, DME, CPE, and RFI), yield traits, body traits, and days open were standardized according to their respective genetic standard deviations. Up to 631 blood samples from 393 cows from 0 to 60 d in milk (DIM) were evaluated for blood plasma concentrations of glucose, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), creatinine, urea, growth hormone (GH), 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3), and other parameters. Blood plasma traits were regressed on DIM, lactation number, herd, and standardized genetic merit. Cows with higher genetic merit for yield had significantly higher concentrations of GH, NEFA (milk and protein yield), and BHB (fat yield) from 31 to 60 DIM, but lower concentrations of glucose from 0 to 30 DIM, and T3 (milk yield, 0–60 DIM). The high GH–low glucose–low T3 concentration pattern was further accentuated for cows with genetic merit for enhanced feed efficiency (higher DME and lower RFI). Cows with a genetic tendency to be thin (low body condition score) also had elevated GH concentrations, but lower blood glucose, creatinine, and T3 concentrations. Those characteristics associated with enhanced feed efficiency (higher GH and lower glucose and T3 concentrations) were unfavorably associated with fertility, as indicated by elevated days open. Elevated NEFA and BHB concentrations were also associated with extended days open. Consideration of metabolic profiles when evaluating feed efficiency might be a method of maintaining high levels of health and reproductive fitness when selecting for feed efficiency.  相似文献

Residual feed intake (RFI), as a measure of feed conversion during growth, was estimated for around 2,000 growing Holstein-Friesian heifer calves aged 6 to 9 mo in New Zealand and Australia, and individuals from the most and least efficient deciles (low and high RFI phenotypes) were retained. These animals (78 New Zealand cows, 105 Australian cows) were reevaluated during their first lactation to determine if divergence for RFI observed during growth was maintained during lactation. Mean daily body weight (BW) gain during assessment as calves had been 0.86 and 1.15 kg for the respective countries, and the divergence in RFI between most and least efficient deciles for growth was 21% (1.39 and 1.42 kg of dry matter, for New Zealand and Australia, respectively). At the commencement of evaluation during lactation, the cows were aged 26 to 29 mo. All were fed alfalfa and grass cubes; it was the sole diet in New Zealand, whereas 6 kg of crushed wheat/d was also fed in Australia. Measurements of RFI during lactation occurred for 34 to 37 d with measurements of milk production (daily), milk composition (2 to 3 times per week), BW and BW change (1 to 3 times per week), as well as body condition score (BCS). Daily milk production averaged 13.8 kg for New Zealand cows and 20.0 kg in Australia. No statistically significant differences were observed between calf RFI decile groups for dry matter intake, milk production, BW change, or BCS; however a significant difference was noted between groups for lactating RFI. Residual feed intake was about 3% lower for lactating cows identified as most efficient as growing calves, and no negative effects on production were observed. These results support the hypothesis that calves divergent for RFI during growth are also divergent for RFI when lactating. The causes for this reduced divergence need to be investigated to ensure that genetic selection programs based on low RFI (better efficiency) are robust.  相似文献

Dairy cow responses to dietary crude protein (CP) may depend on stage of lactation. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of 4 concentrations of dietary CP on dry matter intake (DMI), production performance, net energy for lactation (NEL) output in milk, feed efficiency (FE: milk NEL/DMI), and nitrogen use efficiency (100 × milk protein-N/N intake) when fed to cows grouped as early, mid-early, mid-late, and late lactation. Our secondary objective was to determine the range of CP concentration at which production responses were not negatively affected across days in milk (DIM). Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 64) were stratified by DIM [initial average ± standard deviation: 86 ± 14.9 (early), 119 ± 10.0 (mid-early), 167 ± 22.2 (mid-late), and 239 ± 11.1 (late)] and then randomly assigned within DIM group to receive 1 of 4 total mixed rations containing 13.6, 15.2, 16.7, and 18.3% CP (dry matter basis) according to a 4 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments. Cows were individually fed a covariate diet for 14 d, followed by 56 d of treatment diets. Milk yield and DMI were recorded daily and milk components were analyzed weekly for 2 consecutive days at 3 daily milkings. Data were analyzed using a categorical mixed-effect model to evaluate the effects of CP concentration and DIM using linear, quadratic, and cubic contrasts, and their interactions. Additionally, a mixed-effect cubic regression model was fit with DIM, dietary CP concentration, and their interaction as continuous independent variables. Dietary CP concentration deemed optimal across DIM was determined as the range of CP for which the dependent responses did not differ from the predicted maximum. With advancing stage of lactation, DMI, milk NEL output, and FE decreased linearly (from 30.4 to 28.4 kg/d for DMI, from 33.2 to 23.3 Mcal/d for NEL output, and from 1.09 to 0.82 Mcal milk NEL/kg DMI for FE for early and late lactation cows, respectively). Responses to dietary CP concentration were linear, quadratic, and cubic with the greatest values observed when cows were fed the 16.7% CP diet across DIM (30.8 kg/d, 31.0 Mcal/d, and 1.01 Mcal/kg for DMI, milk NEL output, and FE, respectively). There was an interaction between dietary CP concentration and stage of lactation for DMI, milk NEL output, milk component yield, and FE, which was due to the decline in response to additional CP as lactation progressed. Compared with the 16.7% CP diet, feeding the 18.3% CP diet decreased milk NEL 0.81 and 5.3 Mcal/d for early and late lactation cows, respectively, indicating that feeding a higher CP concentration in late lactation had a negative effect on cow performance. Nitrogen use efficiency declined linearly with increasing CP concentration and DIM. Regression analysis suggested that dietary CP ranging from 16.3 to 17.4% maintained production in early and mid-early lactation. However, dietary CP could be reduced to between 15.7 and 17.1% in late lactation. This research suggested that there are distinct ranges of dietary CP concentrations that maintain cow performance at each stage of lactation.  相似文献

Postpartum energy status is critically important to health and fertility, and it remains a major task to find suitable indicator traits for energy balance. Therefore, genetic parameters for daily energy balance (EB) and dry matter intake (DMI), weekly milk fat to protein ratio (FPR), and monthly body condition score (BCS) were estimated using random regression on data collected from 682 Holstein-Friesian primiparous cows recorded between lactation d 11 to 180. Average energy-corrected milk (ECM), EB, DMI, BCS, and FPR were 32.0 kg, 9.6 MJ of NEL, 20.3 kg, 2.95, and 1.12, respectively. Heritability estimates for EB, DMI, BCS, and FPR ranged from 0.03 to 0.13, 0.04 to 0.19, 0.34 to 0.59, and 0.20 to 0.54. Fat to protein ratio was a more valid measure for EB in early lactation than DMI, BCS, or single milk components. Correlations between FPR and EB were highest at the beginning of lactation [genetic correlation (rg) = −0.62 at days in milk (DIM) 15] and decreased toward zero. Dry matter intake was the trait most closely correlated with EB in mid lactation (rg = 0.73 at DIM 120 and 150). Energy balance in early lactation was negatively correlated to EB in mid lactation. The same applied to DMI. Genetic correlations between FPR across lactation stages were all positive; the lowest genetic correlation (0.55) was estimated between the beginning of lactation and early mid lactation. Hence, to improve EB at the beginning of lactation, EB and indicator traits need to be recorded in early lactation. We concluded that FPR is an adequate indicator for EB during the energy deficit phase. Genetic correlations of FPR with ECM, fat percentage, and protein percentage showed that a reduction of FPR in early lactation would have a slightly negative effect on ECM, whereas milk composition would change in a desirable manner.  相似文献

Eighty-four Holstein cows were utilized to evaluate effects of dry period (60 d vs. 30 d), with or without estradiol cypionate (ECP) injections to accelerate mammary involution, on prepartum and postpartum dry matter intake (DMI), body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), and subsequent milk yield (MY). Treatments were arranged in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial design that included dry period (30 d dry, 30 d dry + ECP, and 60 d dry), prepartum and postpartum bovine somatotropin (bST; 10.2 mg/d), and prepartum anionic or cationic diets. To accelerate mammary involution, ECP (15 mg) was injected intramuscularly at dry-off. No interaction of bST or prepartum diet with dry period length was detected on BW, BCS, or MY. No significant effects of dry period length on prepartum DMI, BW, or BCS were detected. Cows with shorter dry periods maintained postpartum BCS better and tended to have greater DMI immediately postpartum. Mean daily yields of milk for dry period groups did not differ during overall lactation period (1 to 21 wk). Injection of ECP at the onset of the 30-d dry period did not affect MY. No significant differences due to dry period length were detected for milk, 3.5% FCM, or SCM yields during first 10 wk of lactation. Data indicated that a short dry period protocol can be used as a management tool with no loss in the subsequent milk production of dairy cows.  相似文献

Residual feed intake (RFI) is a candidate trait for feed efficiency in dairy cattle. We investigated the influence of lactation stage on the effect of energy sinks in defining RFI and the genetic parameters for RFI across lactation stages for primiparous dairy cattle. Our analysis included 747 primiparous Holstein cows, each with recordings on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, milk composition, and body weight (BW) over 44 lactation weeks. For each individual cow, energy-corrected milk (ECM), metabolic BW (MBW), and change in BW (ΔBW) were calculated in each week of lactation and were taken as energy sinks when defining RFI. Two RFI models were considered in the analyses; RFI model [1] was a 1-step RFI model with constant partial regression coefficients of DMI on energy sinks (ECM, MBW, and ΔBW) over lactation. In RFI model [2], data from 44 lactation weeks were divided into 11 consecutive lactation periods of 4 wk in length. The RFI model [2] was identical to model [1] except that period-specific partial regressions of DMI on ECM, MBW, and ΔBW in each lactation period were allowed across lactation. We estimated genetic parameters for RFI across lactation by both models using a random regression method. Using RFI model [2], we estimated the period-specific effects of ECM, MBW, and ΔBW on DMI in all lactation periods. Based on results from RFI model [2], the partial regression coefficients of DMI on ECM, MBW, and ΔBW differed across lactation in RFI. Constant partial regression coefficients of DMI on energy sinks over lactation was not always sufficient to account for the effects across lactation and tended to give roughly average information from all period-specific effects. Heritability for RFI over 44 lactation weeks ranged from 0.10 to 0.29 in model [1] and from 0.10 to 0.23 in model [2]. Genetic variance and heritability estimates for RFI from model [2] tended to be slightly lower and more stable across lactation than those from model [1]. In both models, RFI was genetically different over lactation, especially between early and later lactation stages. Genetic correlation estimates for RFI between early and later lactation tended to be higher when using model [2] compared with model [1]. In conclusion, partial regression coefficients of DMI on energy sinks differed across lactation when modeling RFI. Neglect of lactation stage when defining RFI could affect the assessment of RFI and the estimation of genetic parameters for RFI across lactation.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of plane of energy intake prepartum on postpartum performance. Primiparous (n = 24) and multiparous (n = 23) Holsteins were randomly assigned by expected date of parturition to 1 of 3 prepartum energy intakes. A moderate energy diet [1.63 Mcal of net energy for lactation (NEL)/kg; 15% crude protein (CP)] was fed for either ad libitum intake (OVR) or restricted intake (RES) to supply 150 or 80% of National Research Council (2001) energy requirement, respectively, for dry cows in late gestation. To limit energy intake to 100% of NRC requirement at ad libitum dry matter intake (DMI), chopped wheat straw was included as 31.8% of dry matter (DM) in a control diet (CON; 1.21 Mcal of NEL/kg of DM; 14% CP). Multiparous and primiparous cows assigned to OVR gained body condition during the dry period [initial body condition score (BCS) = 3.3], but were not overconditioned by parturition (BCS = 3.5). Multiparous cows in the OVR group lost more BCS postpartum than multiparous RES or CON cows. Primiparous cows lost similar amounts of BCS among dietary treatment groups postpartum. Addition of chopped wheat straw to CON diets prevented a large decrease in DMI prepartum in both primiparous and multiparous cows. During the first 3 wk postpartum, DMI as a percentage of BW was lower for multiparous OVR cows than for multiparous RES cows. Prepartum diet effects did not carry over through the entire 8-wk lactation period. Because of greater mobilization of body stores, OVR cows had greater milk fat percentage and greater 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield during the first 3 wk postpartum. Multiparous cows assigned to OVR experienced a 55% decrease in energy balance and primiparous cows a 40% decrease in energy balance during the last 3 wk before parturition, compared with CON or RES cows that had little change. Multiparous cows fed OVR had a greater contribution of energy from body energy reserves to milk energy output than either CON or RES cows. Overfeeding energy prepartum resulted in large changes in periparturient energy balance. Even in the absence of overconditioning, a large change in DMI and energy balance prepartum influenced postpartum DMI and BCS loss, especially for multiparous cows. Chopped wheat straw was effective at controlling energy intake prepartum, although primiparous cows did not achieve predicted DMI. Even so, controlling or restricting energy intake in primiparous cows was not detrimental to lactational performance over the first 8 wk of lactation.  相似文献

Residual feed intake (RFI) and feed saved (FS) are important feed efficiency traits that have been increasingly considered in genetic improvement programs. Future sustainability of these genetic evaluations will depend upon greater flexibility to accommodate sparsely recorded dry matter intake (DMI) records on many more cows, especially from commercial environments. Recent multiple-trait random regression (MTRR) modeling developments have facilitated days in milk (DIM)-specific inferences on RFI and FS, particularly in modeling the effect of change in metabolic body weight (MBW). The MTRR analyses, using daily data on the core traits of DMI, MBW, and milk energy (MilkE), were conducted separately for 2,532 primiparous and 2,379 multiparous US Holstein cows from 50 to 200 DIM. Estimated MTRR variance components were used to derive genetic RFI and FS and DIM-specific genetic partial regressions of DMI on MBW, MilkE, and change in MBW. Estimated daily heritabilities of RFI and FS varied across lactation for both primiparous (0.05–0.07 and 0.11–0.17, respectively) and multiparous (0.03–0.13 and 0.10–0.17, respectively) cows. Genetic correlations of RFI across DIM varied (>0.05) widely compared with FS (>0.54) within either parity class. Heritability estimates based on average lactation-wise measures were substantially larger than daily heritabilities, ranging from 0.17 to 0.25 for RFI and from 0.35 to 0.41 for FS. The partial genetic regression coefficients of DMI on MBW (0.11 to 0.16 kg/kg0.75 for primiparous and 0.12 to 0.14 kg/kg0.75 for multiparous cows) and of DMI on MilkE (0.45 to 0.68 kg/Mcal for primiparous and 0.36 to 0.61 kg/Mcal for multiparous cows) also varied across lactation. In spite of the computational challenges encountered with MTRR, the model potentially facilitates an efficient strategy for harnessing more data involving a wide variety of data recording scenarios for genetic evaluations on feed efficiency.  相似文献

Nutritional management during the dry period may affect susceptibility of cows to metabolic and infectious diseases during the periparturient period. Thirty-five multiparous Holstein cows were used to determine the effect of prepartum intake, postpartum induction of ketosis, and periparturient disorders on metabolic status. Cows were fed a diet from dry-off to parturition at either ad libitum intake or restricted intake [RI; 80% of calculated net energy for lactation (NEL) requirement]. After parturition, all cows were fed a lactation diet. At 4 d in milk (DIM), cows underwent a physical examination and were classified as healthy or having at least one periparturient disorder (PD). Healthy cows were assigned to the control (n = 6) group or the ketosis induction (KI; n = 9) group. Cows with PD were assigned to the PD control (PDC; n = 17) group. Cows in the control and PDC groups were fed for ad libitum intake. Cows in the KI group were fed at 50% of their intake on 4 DIM from 5 to 14 DIM or until signs of clinical ketosis were observed; then, cows were returned to ad libitum intake. During the dry period, ad libitum cows ate more than RI cows; the difference in intake resulted in ad libitum cows that were in positive energy balance (142% of NEL requirement) and RI cows that were in negative energy balance (85% of NEL requirement). Prepartum intake resulted in changes in serum metabolites consistent with plane of nutrition and energy balance. Prepartum intake had no effect on postpartum intake, serum metabolites, or milk yield, but total lipid content of liver at 1 d postpartum was greater for ad libitum cows than for RI cows. The PD cows had lower intake and milk yield during the first 4 DIM than did healthy cows. During the ketosis induction period, KI cows had lower intake, milk yield, and serum glucose concentration but higher concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate in serum as well as total lipid and triacylglycerol in liver than did control cows. Cows with PD had only modest alterations in metabolic variables in blood and liver compared with healthy cows. The negative effects of PD and KI on metabolic status and milk yield were negligible by 42 DIM, although cows with PD had lower body condition score and BW. Prepartum intake did not affect postpartum metabolic status or milk yield. Periparturient disorders and induction of ketosis negatively affected metabolic status and milk yield during the first 14 DIM.  相似文献

In this study, we aimed to estimate and compare the genetic parameters of dry matter intake (DMI), energy-corrected milk (ECM), and body weight (BW) as 3 feed efficiency–related traits across lactation in 3 dairy cattle breeds (Holstein, Nordic Red, and Jersey). The analyses were based on weekly records of DMI, ECM, and BW per cow across lactation for 842 primiparous Holstein cows, 746 primiparous Nordic Red cows, and 378 primiparous Jersey cows. A random regression model was applied to estimate variance components and genetic parameters for DMI, ECM, and BW in each lactation week within each breed. Phenotypic means of DMI, ECM, and BW observations across lactation showed to be in very similar patterns between breeds, whereas breed differences lay in the average level of DMI, ECM, and BW. Generally, for all studied breeds, the heritability for DMI ranged from 0.2 to 0.4 across lactation and was in a range similar to the heritability for ECM. The heritability for BW ranged from 0.4 to 0.6 across lactation, higher than the heritability for DMI or ECM. Among the studied breeds, the heritability estimates for DMI shared a very similar range between breeds, whereas the heritability estimates for ECM tended to be different between breeds. For BW, the heritability estimates also tended to follow a similar range between breeds. Among the studied traits, the genetic variance and heritability for DMI varied across lactation, and the genetic correlations between DMI at different lactation stages were less than unity, indicating a genetic heterogeneity of feed intake across lactation in dairy cattle. In contrast, BW was the most genetically consistent trait across lactation, where BW among all lactation weeks was highly correlated. Genetic correlations between DMI, ECM, and BW changed across lactation, especially in early lactation. Energy-corrected milk had a low genetic correlation with both DMI and BW at the beginning of lactation, whereas ECM was highly correlated with DMI in mid and late lactation. Based on our results, genetic heterogeneity of DMI, ECM, and BW across lactation generally was observed in all studied dairy breeds, especially for DMI, which should be carefully considered for the recording strategy of these traits. Objectives of the current study were to estimate genetic parameters in Holstein cows for energy balance (EB) and related traits including dry matter intake (DMI), body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), energy-corrected milk (ECM) production, and gross feed efficiency (GFE), defined as the ratio of total ECM yield to total DMI over the first 150d of lactation. Data were recorded for the first half of lactation on 227 and 175 cows in their first or later lactation, respectively. Random regression models were fitted to longitudinal data. Also, each trait was averaged over monthly intervals and analyzed by single and multivariate animal models. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.27 to 0.63, 0.12 to 0.62, 0.12 to 0.49, 0.63 to 0.72, and 0.49 to 0.53 for DMI, ECM yield, EB, BW, and BCS, respectively, averaged over monthly intervals. Daily heritability estimates ranged from 0.18 to 0.30, 0.10 to 0.26, 0.07 to 0.22, 0.43 to 0.67, and 0.25 to 0.38 for DMI, ECM yield, EB, BW, and BCS, respectively. Estimated heritability for GFE was 0.32. The genetic correlation of EB at 10d in milk (DIM) with EB at 150 DIM was -0.19, suggesting the genetic regulation of this trait differs by stage of lactation. Positive genetic correlations were found among DMI, ECM yield, and BW averaged over monthly intervals, whereas correlations of these traits with BCS depended upon stage of lactation. Total ECM yield for the lactation was positively correlated with DMI, but a negative genetic correlation between total ECM yield and EB was found. However, the genetic correlation between total ECM yield and EB in the first month of lactation was -0.02, indicating that total production is not genetically correlated with EB during the first month of lactation, when negative EB is most closely associated with diminished fitness. The genetic correlation between GFE and EB ranged from -0.73 to -0.99, indicating that selection for more efficient cows would favor a lower energy status. However, the genetic correlation between EB in the first month of lactation and GFE calculated from 75 to 150 DIM was not significant, indicating that the unfavorable correlation between GFE and EB in early lactation may be minimized with alternative definitions of efficiency. Thus, EB, GFE and related traits will likely respond to genetic selection in Holstein cows. However, the impact of selection for improved feed efficiency on EB must be carefully considered to avoid potential negative consequences of further reductions in EB at the onset of lactation.  相似文献

Previous research in our laboratory showed that dietary fat supplementation during the dry period was associated with decreased peripartum hepatic lipid accumulation. However, fat supplementation decreased dry matter (DM) intake and thereby confounded results. Consequently, 47 Holstein cows with body condition scores (BCS) ≤ 3.5 at dry-off were used to determine whether source or amount of energy fed to dry cows was responsible for the decreased hepatic lipid content. Moderate grain- or fat-supplemented diets [1.50 Mcal of net energy for lactation (NEL)/kg] were fed from dry-off (60 d before expected parturition) to calving at either ad libitum (160% of NEL requirement) or restricted (80% of NEL requirement) intakes. Postpartum, cows were fed a single lactation diet for ad libitum intake and performance was measured for 105 d. Prepartum intakes of DM and NEL were significantly lower for feed-restricted cows as designed. During the first 21 d postpartum, previously restricted cows had higher intakes of DM and NEL. Body weights and BCS were lower prepartum for restricted cows but groups converged to similar nadirs postpartum. Restricted-fed cows had lower concentrations of glucose and insulin and increased concentrations of NEFA in plasma during the dry period. Peripartum NEFA rose markedly for all treatments but were higher postpartum for cows previously fed ad libitum. Plasma concentrations of NEFA and BHBA remained lower in cows restricted-during the dry period. Postpartum concentrations of total lipid and triglyceride in liver were lower in cows previously feed-restricted. Across dietary treatments, activity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) in hepatic mitochondria was lowest at − 21 d, highest at 1 d, and decreased at 21 and 65 d relative to parturition. The activity of CPT at d 1 tended to be higher for previously feed-restricted cows; thereafter, CPT activity declined more rapidly than in cows fed ad libitum. Nutrient intake during the dry period had more pronounced effects on peripartal lipid metabolism and DMI than did composition of the prepartum diet.  相似文献
